* Announcer: MOTORWEEK , 40 YEARS, STEERING YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.
BROUGHT TO YOU BY... ROCKAUTO HAS AUTO PARTS FROM HUNDREDS OF MANUFACTURERS, OFFERING A VARIETY OF BRANDS, PRICES, AND SPECIFICATIONS.
ROCKAUTO.COM, ALL THE PARTS YOUR CAR WILL EVER NEED.
John: THE TOYOTA SUPRA HAS BARELY BEEN BACK IN BUSINESS A YEAR, AND THEY'RE ALREADY TALKING EXPANSION.
THAT'S RIGHT, FOR 2021, THE TOYOTA GR SUPRA HAS MORE AND LESS OF EVERYTHING WE LOVE.
NOW THAT SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT REASON TO HIT THE ROAD AND GET TO KNOW IT ALL OVER AGAIN.
* THE MOST SIGNIFICANT NEWS FOR THE 2021 TOYOTA GR SUPRA IS THE FACT THAT THERE'S A LIGHTER, MORE RESPONSIVE, AND MORE AFFORDABLE ENTRY-LEVEL 2.0 VERSION POWERED BY A 255 HORSEPOWER I4 TURBO.
BUT, BEING THE POWER-HUNGRY TYPES THAT WE ARE, WE WERE FAR MORE INTRIGUED BY THE UPDATES APPLIED TO THE SUPRA 3.0.
ITS INLINE-6 TURBO ENGINE GETS AN UPGRADE, WITH HORSEPOWER CLIMBING FROM 335 TO 382, AND TORQUE RISING FROM 365 POUND-FEET TO 368, RATINGS NOW MORE OR LESS ON PAR WITH ITS BMW Z4 KIN.
BUT, IT'S MORE THAN JUST A RE-TUNE OR A SOFTWARE UPDATE.
NEW PISTONS LOWER COMPRESSION RATIO FROM 11.1 TO 10.2:1; AND THERE'S A NEW CYLINDER HEAD, WITH A MORE EFFICIENT MULTIPORT EXHAUST MANIFOLD ATTACHED.
TOYOTA ALSO ADDRESSED THE SUSPENSION; NOT BECAUSE IT NEEDED IT, BUT MORE TO TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF THE ADDED POWER.
DAMPERS HAVE BEEN RETUNED, BUMP STOPS ADDED, AND MORE STRUCTURAL BRACING IS IN PLACE, TYING THE STRUT TOWERS INTO THE RADIATOR SUPPORT TO GREATLY STIFFEN THE FRONT END.
AND OF COURSE, ALL OF THE SOFTWARE CONTROLLING THE SUSPENSION, STEERING, ACTIVE DIFFERENTIAL, AND STABILITY CONTROL HAVE BEEN UPDATED TO MAKE IT ALL WORK TOGETHER.
SO, WE HEADED STRAIGHT FOR TRACK; AND RIGHT OFF THE BAT, WE WERE ABLE TO LAUNCH TO 60 IN 4.1 SECONDS, THREE-TENTHS FASTER THAN LAST YEAR.
ONCE, WE GOT THE TIRES WARMED UP AND STARTED PLAYING WITH THE SETTINGS, WE WERE ABLE TO DROP THAT DOWN TO A "NICE" 3.8 SECONDS.
MAX TORQUE KICKS IN 200 RPM HIGHER THAN BEFORE, YET...STILL AT A LOW 1,800 - AND IT SEEMS TO LAST LONGER, WITH POWER STAYING FLAT UNTIL IT STARTS TO DROP OFF AROUND 5,000.
GEAR SHIFTS FROM THE 8-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ARE FAST AND FIRM, WHETHER DONE AUTOMATICALLY, OR TRIGGERED BY THE DRIVER, WHICH IS ACTUALLY KIND OF ENJOYABLE HERE IN THE SUPRA.
SAME RESULT EITHER WAY, 12.2 SECOND QUARTER-MILES AT 117 MILES PER HOUR; ALSO ABOUT HALF A SECOND QUICKER THAN BEFORE.
BEST PART OF ALL, IT JUST FEELS SO MUCH FASTER.
BRAKES WERE EQUALLY IMPRESSIVE; SHORT PEDAL TRAVEL, WITH GOOD FEEL, AND CONSISTENT STOPS FROM 60 OF JUST 93 FEET.
CORONAVIRUS SHUTDOWNS HAMPERED OUR PLANS FOR A FULL TRACK TEST, SO, WE HAD TO MAKE DO WITH A FEW RUNS THROUGH OUR SLALOM COURSE.
IT'S HARD TO SAY WE COULD FEEL A SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT, BUT THIS SUPRA IS A CERTIFIED CONE CARVER FOR SURE.
TONS OF GRIP, SUPER-QUICK STEERING, AND GREAT BALANCE HAD US PUSHING 50 MILES PER HOUR THROUGH OUR "SLOW SPEED COURSE."
THIS IS NOTHING NEW FOR THE SUPRA OF COURSE.
OUR HISTORY WITH THE SUPRA GOES ALL THE WAY BACK TO OUR FIRST SEASON, WITH WHAT WAS THEN KNOWN AS THE TOYOTA CELICA SUPRA.
WE FOUND IT QUICK, PRECISE, AND EFFORTLESS THROUGH THE CONES; WITH EXIT SPEEDS WELL ABOVE NORMAL, DESPITE BEING BIGGER AND HEAVIER THAN A MUSTANG.
AND ITS "BOULEVARD RIDE" DIDN'T TRANSLATE INTO EXCESSIVE BODY ROLL; JUST SUCH SMOOTHNESS THAT IT ALMOST SEEMED TO THINK ITS WAY THROUGH THE PYLONS.
BACK TO THE PRESENT, TO WRAP UP A FEW MORE MINOR CHANGES FOR '21.
THE STANDARD 6.5 INCH INFOTAINMENT SCREEN IS GONE.
ALL MODELS NOW GET THE 8.8 INCH VERSION THAT PREVIOUSLY CAME WITH PREMIUM TRIM.
THERE'S A NEW SAFETY AND TECHNOLOGY PACKAGE THAT INCLUDES NAVIGATION, UPGRADED JBL AUDIO, AND DYNAMIC RADAR CRUISE CONTROL.
AND FINALLY, THE BREMBO BRAKE CALIPERS ON PREMIUM SUPRA'S GET A NEW SHADE OF RED PAINT AND A TOYOTA SUPRA LOGO.
THE '21 DOES USE A BIT MORE FUEL WITH THE ADDED POWER.
GOVERNMENT FUEL ECONOMY RATINGS FALLING A TAD TO 22-CITY, 30-HIGHWAY, AND 25-COMBINED.
STILL, WE AVERAGED A FINE 26.9 MILES PER GALLON ON PREMIUM.
ALL OF THESE UPDATES DO COME AT A PRICE, WITH THE BASE 3.0 SEEING ABOUT A $1,000 INCREASE TO $51,985; THOUGH BARGAIN SHOPPERS HAVE A NEW OPTION AS WELL, WITH THE 2.0 STARTING AT JUST $43,985.
WE'VE TESTED THREE DIFFERENT 5TH GENERATION SUPRA'S OVER THE LAST 18 MONTHS, AND HAVE YET TO FIND A REASON TO BE DISAPPOINTED IN THE REBIRTH OF THIS JAPANESE SPORTS CAR LEGEND, AND OUR MOTORWEEK DRIVERS' CHOICE PICK FOR BEST SPORT COUPE TWO YEARS RUNNING!
SO, NO MATTER HOW YOU SPIN IT, THE 2021 TOYOTA GR SUPRA REMAINS A PERFORMANCE BARGAIN, AND A TON OF FUN ONE AT THAT!
* THERE ARE A LOT OF WAYS TO PERSONALIZE YOUR VEHICLE.
NOW, YOU CAN ADD EXTRA BODY WORK, OR MAYBE EXPRESS YOUR INDIVIDUALITY WITH A THROATY EXHAUST.
OR MAYBE ITS A WRAP, OR CUSTOM PAINT.
AND, WHEN IT COMES TO CUSTOM PAINT, SOME OF THEM ARE TRULY WORKS OF ART.
BUT THAT TAKES A DEDICATED ARTIST LIKE THE ONE OUR STEPHANIE HART HAS FOUND WHO CREATES MASTERPIECES ON FOUR-WHEELS.
* Stephanie Hart: MEMORABLE MUSIC FEEDS THE SOUL... AND MOTIVATES CHUCK GAMBER.
TRUCKS ARE HIS CANVAS.
HE'S BEEN PAINTING RIGHT ON THEM FOR 40 YEARS!
A SPECIAL GREETING WELCOMED US INTO JACK OF ARTS IN ELLICOTT CITY, MARYLAND.
WE IMMEDIATELY FELT RIGHT AT HOME!
THIS IS ACTUALLY, MOTORWEEK'S SECOND VISIT TO THE ART STUDIO, AND WE FOUND THE SAME CREATIVE VIBE IT HAD THREE DECADES AGO.
Chuck Gamber: I LOVE WHAT I DO BECAUSE I WAS BORN A CREATIVE ARTIST AND YOU KNOW, EVEN IN HIGH SCHOOL, I REMEMBER FRESHMEN YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL WHEN THEY ASK YOU... WHAT YOU WANT TO DO FOR A LIVING?
I GO...I WANT TO BE AN ARTIST AND THEY GO, "OH...NO, YOU'LL STARVE IF YOU DO THAT YOU DON'T WANT TO BE AN ARTIST," BUT YOU CAN'T CHANGE WHO YOU ARE... AND YOU CAN'T CHANGE WHAT YOU DO... AND YOU CAN'T CHANGE HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR CREATIVITY... Stephanie: IGNORING THE ADVICE OF ADMINISTRATORS, A THEN 18-YEAR-OLD CHUCK, TOOK A GAMBLE.
WITH A $100 LOAN FROM HIS MOM, HE BOUGHT A SIGN CASE.
HE'S USED IT EVERYDAY SINCE.
CHUCK IS REALLY PROUD OF THIS PIECE OF ART.
AND ITS EASY TO SEE WHY, WHO DOESN'T LOVE THE BEACH.
HE SAYS, "IT TOOK HIM ABOUT A WEEK TO PAINT EACH SIDE."
HE USES IT TO TRAVEL CROSS COUNTRY TO CAR AND TRUCK SHOWS TO SHOW OFF HIS WORK AND GET NEW BUSINESS.
MOST OF HIS WORK IS A MIX OF OLD WORLD AND NEW AGE TECHNIQUES.
HIS PRICES RANGE FROM $50 TO TENS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS... FOR UNFORGETTABLE ART WORK... LIKE, HE'S DOING HERE ON THIS FREIGHTLINER.
Chuck: THERE'S A LITTLE BIT OF PT BARNUM BEING THE SIGN MAN.
YOU GOT TO KNOW HOW TO KIND OF PUT IN THE SHOW AND MAKE YOUR PEOPLE LOOK GOOD.
AND IF YOU MAKE THEM LOOK GOOD, THEY GET COMPLIMENTS AND IF THEY GET COMPLIMENTS, THEY SAY, "HEY, JACK OF ARTS DID THAT" OR "CHUCK DID THAT AND YOU OUGHT TO GO SEE CHUCK BECAUSE HE'S GONNA PUT THAT LITTLE SPECIAL THING TO YOUR TRUCK AND YOUR GONNA LOVE DRIVING YOUR TRUCK."
AND IF YOUR TRUCK LOOKS GOOD, YOU TAKE BETTER CARE OF IT, YOU GET COMPLIMENTS AND EVERYBODY MAKES... AND YOU GET TO MAKE MORE MONEY.
Stephanie: IT'S A COMBINATION OF TALENTS THAT SETS THIS SHOP APART FROM ALL THE REST, THEY ALSO SPECIALIZE IN GRAPHIC DESIGN.
THAT'S WHERE JOE WESTPHAL COMES IN, HE'S BEEN RUNNING THE DIGITAL ASPECT OF THE BUSINESS FOR THE LAST 13 YEARS.
Joe Westphal: THIS RIGHT HERE IS A DESIGN THAT I DID FOR A TAILGATE FOR A BUSINESS, A LOCAL BUSINESS.
ITS KIND OF HIS PERSONAL TRUCK BUT HE JUST WANTS TO BE ABLE TO ADVERTISE HIS BUSINESS A LITTLE BIT.
SO, HE'S LOOKING FOR SOMETHING A LITTLE EDGEY, YOU KNOW, OUT THERE... SOMETHING THAT WILL LOOK COOL BUT STILL, REPRESENT HIS BUSINESS WELL.
Stephanie: JACK OR ARTS NAILED IT.
Jim Byrd: IT IS AMAZING WHEN YOU KNOW SOMEBODY CAN TAKE THEIR LOVE AND PASSION, AND MAKE A LIVING OUT OF IT.
I REALLY ADMIRE HIM FOR THAT.
Joe: SO, WHEN YOU CAN STAND BACK AND LOOK AT YOUR FINISHED PRODUCT, AND SEE I DESIGNED THAT I CAME UP WITH IT, THAT'S REALLY FULFILLING AND REALLY HELPS YOU ENJOY YOUR WORK.
Stephanie: REWARDING FOR THE ARTISTS AND THEIR CUSTOMERS, LIKE, BILL KUIPER...A FORMER AMATEUR RACE CAR DRIVER.
Bill Kuiper: THE 1970 MERCURY CYCLONE HEAVILY MODIFIED...YEAH, IT WAS BEAUTIFUL.
Stephanie: BACK IN THE DAY, BILL ASKED CHUCK TO REPLICATE A WOOD BROTHERS STOCK CAR.
Bill: I FELT GOOD.
THE CAR WAS A WORK OF EMOTION FOR ME.
Stephanie: TRANSLATING THAT EMOTION INTO ART, CHUCK SUCCEEDED.
Chuck: IT'S BEEN A WONDERFUL JOURNEY RUNNING A SMALL ART STUDIO.
I REALLY DID ENJOY MY LIFE AS BEING ABLE TO STAY AN ARTIST AND I'M KINDA GLAD, I DIDN'T TAKE IT BIG BECAUSE ONCE YOU GO BIG, YOU HAVE TO MANAGE PEOPLE, YOU GOTTA MANAGE A BUSINESS AND YOU ARE NOT REALLY BEING THE ARTIST ANYMORE.
YOU'RE BEING A BUSINESSMAN AND ITS NOT THE MONEY THAT DRIVES ME TO DO IT ALTHOUGH YOU HAVE TO MAKE ENOUGH MONEY TO LIVE.
WHAT INSPIRES ME IS THE TRUCKS AND THE PEOPLE COMING IN WANTING SOMETHING SPECIAL DONE.
* John: THERE IS NO SHORTAGE OF BOOKS OUT THERE ABOUT STEVE MCQUEEN.
BUT WHILE MOST ARE FOCUSED ON HIS MOVIES, CARS, OR RACING EXPLOITS; MATT STONE'S "MCQUEEN'S MOTORCYCLES," KEEPS THE TOPIC TO JUST THAT, HIS MOTORCYCLES.
MCQUEEN REPORTEDLY OWNED AROUND 200 OF THEM IN HIS LIFETIME.
THE FIRST HALF OF THE BOOK GIVES SOME BACK STORY INTO HOW HE DEVELOPED HIS LOVE AFFAIR WITH TWO-WHEELERS; WHILE THE SECOND HALF GOES INTO MORE DETAIL ON SOME OF THE MORE SIGNIFICANT MOTORCYCLES THAT HE OWNED.
IT'S A QUICK MUST READ, PERFECT FOR BOTH FANS OF MOTORCYCLES AND THE ULTIMATE "KING OF COOL."
A CLEAN WORKPLACE ALWAYS MAKES JOBS IN THE GARAGE EASIER AND MORE EFFICIENT.
PAT GOSS SHOWS YOU HOW TO GET YOUR FLOORS DONE RIGHT.
* Pat Goss: NOW, IF YOU HAVE A NICE CAR THAT MEANS IT DESERVES A NICE GARAGE FLOOR.
NOW, MOST OF US ARE GONNA BE DEALING WITH CONCRETE AND NO MATTER WHAT YOU GOING TO PUT ON THAT GARAGE FLOOR IT HAS TO BE PROPERLY PREPARED.
SO, DECIDE WHAT PRODUCT YOU WANT TO USE AND FOLLOW THE PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS TO THE LETTER.
THAT WAY YOU'LL GET A BETTER JOB.
NOW, SOME MAY REQUIRE A GRINDING AND SOME MAY REQUIRE AN ACID WASH, THERE'S ALL SORTS OF DIFFERENT THINGS THAT THEY MAY WANT.
BUT MAKE SURE YOU DO IT OR OTHERWISE YOUR JOB WILL NOT LAST AT ALL.
NOW, YOU HAVE TO SELECT THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF MATERIALS, WELL, YOU CAN USE A SINGLE PART PAINT SUCH AS WE HAVE HERE OUT OF THE CAN ON TO THE FLOOR, DOES A GOOD JOB.
OR YOU CAN USE A TWO PART PAINT WHICH USES A HARDENER WHICH MAKES MORE DURABLE.
ITS MORE DIFFICULT TO WORK WITH AND COST A BIT MORE MONEY, SO NO PROBLEM THERE.
BUT, THE BIG THING YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER ABOUT ANY KIND OF PAINT THAT YOU PUT ON THE FLOOR FOR THE MOST PART UNLESS ITS SOMETHING REALLY HIGH-END, CHANCES ARE THAT HOT TIRES WILL CAUSE IT TO PEEL AND YOU MIGHT HAVE ISSUES WITH THAT.
ALRIGHT, ANOTHER THING TO PREVENT SLIPPING AND SLIDING, AND SO ON OR FOR THE APPEARANCE, YOU MAY WANT TO PUT FLAKES INTO THE PAINT.
WE'VE DONE IT DOWN HERE ON THIS EXAMPLE, SO YOU CAN SEE WHAT YOU WIND UP WITH...LOOKS INTERESTING AND IS NOT QUITE AS SLIPPERY.
SO...BUT THEN...COME THE OTHER PRODUCTS, THE PLASTIC PRODUCTS.
THEY MAY BE THIN OR THEY MAY BE THICK, THEY MAY BE INTERLOCKING OR THEY MAY BE PEEL AND STICK.
WHATEVER YOU SELECT MAKE SURE THAT YOU FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS AGAIN.
NOW HERE, IN GOSS' GARAGE, WE'VE HAD THIS THICK FORM ON THE FLOOR FOR A LOT OF YEARS AND ITS BEEN VERY DURABLE, AND VERY FORGIVING.
BUT WITH ALL OF THESE THERE'S A COUPLE OF THINGS TO REMEMBER.
NUMBER ONE, ANY PLASTIC PRODUCT, YOU CAN'T USE A TORCH BECAUSE HOT METAL WILL BURN RIGHT THROUGH IT.
IT ALSO HAS SEAMS IN IT, SO MOISTURE CAN GET UNDERNEATH IT AND ITS DIFFICULT TO GET OUT.
YOU CAN ALSO PUNCTURE IT WITH A JACK STAND OR A SHARP OBJECT, SO YOU HAVE TO BE A LITTLE BUT CAREFUL.
BUT FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS AND HEY, YOU WILL HAVE A GORGEOUS GARAGE FLOOR THAT'LL LAST FOR MANY YEARS.
AND IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION OR COMMENT, DROP ME A LINE, RIGHT HERE AT MOTORWEEK !
John: THIS LOVINGLY PRESERVED 1940 PACKARD 120 CLUB SEDAN IS OUR MOTORWEEK 40TH ANNIVERSARY CAR OF THE WEEK.
DAVID RANDALL FROM KENNEWICK, WASHINGTON, HAS OWNED THIS CLASSY 4-DOOR FOR 60 YEARS, AND PLANS TO PASS IT ON TO HIS 25-YEAR-OLD GRANDSON WHO WAS DRAWN TO IT EVEN AS A TODDLER.
SUBMIT PHOTOS OF YOUR CHERISHED RIDE FOR CAR OF THE WEEK CONSIDERATION TO...
THERE'S ALWAYS A NEW QUICK SPIN WAITING AT THE CURB AT MOTORWEEK , SO LET'S SEE WHERE THIS WEEK'S TAKES US!
* Greg Carloss: THE LINCOLN NAUTILUS HAS COME A LONG WAY SINCE IT FIRST SET SAIL IN 2019 AS A RECHRISTENING OF THE MKX MIDSIZE FORD EDGE-BASED CROSSOVER.
THE NAME CHANGE DID BRING SOME UPDATES WITH IT, BUT 2021 SEES EVEN BIGGER CHANGES.
MOST IMPRESSIVE IS THE INTERIOR REDO; AN ENHANCED VERSION OF THEIR SANCTUARY THEME.
GONE IS THE RISING CONSOLE/CENTER STACK COMBO; REPLACED BY A THINNED-OUT CONSOLE AND MORE HORIZONTAL DASH DESIGN, WITH A LARGE 13.2 INCH DASH-TOP INFOTAINMENT SCREEN, ON WHICH SYNC 4 MAKES ITS DEBUT.
Jessica Ray: WHEN WE TESTED THE NAUTILUS BACK IN 2019, WE NOTICED THAT THE INTERIOR WAS LACKING COMPARED TO ITS COMPETITORS.
BUT LINCOLN IS ADDRESSING THAT IN THIS REFRESH.
THE INTERIOR NOW TAKES ITS CUES FROM WHAT WE'VE SEEN IN ITS LINCOLN SUV SIBLINGS, WITH A MUCH MORE STREAMLINED AND SIMPLE CENTER CONSOLE, AND INFOTAINMENT CENTER.
AND OF COURSE, BETTER FUNCTIONALITY.
Greg: FAMILIAR POWERTRAIN CHOICES FROM THE FORD LINEUP; YOUR CHOICE OF 250 HORSEPOWER I4 TURBO, OR 335 HORSEPOWER TWIN-TURBO V6; THOUGH LINCOLN DROPS THE ECOBOOST NAME, PERHAPS THERE'S NO ECOBOOSTING IN A SANCTUARY.
Brian Robinson: YOU'VE GOT TO LOVE FORD'S TURBO CHARGED ENGINES; BOTH OPTIONS HERE DELIVER PLENTY OF POWER FOR MOST PEOPLE'S SUV NEEDS; AND NO MATTER WHICH ONE YOU CHOOSE, YOU GET A NICE 8-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION.
AND WITH THE REDESIGN, THEY GOT RID OF THE GOOFY PUSH BUTTON GEAR SELECTORS THEY USED TO HAVE IN THE DASH.
NOW, IT HAS THE NAVIGATOR STYLE TOGGLE SWITCHES.
STILL NOT GREAT, BUT A BIG IMPROVEMENT.
Greg: THE EXTERIOR DESIGN STICKS WITH WHAT WE'VE SEEN FROM LINCOLN AND EVEN ON THIS NAUTILUS RECENTLY, WITH ONLY SOME MODEST TWEAKING OF THE FRONT FASCIA.
THE 2021 LINCOLN NAUTILUS IS SLATED TO ARRIVE IN DEALERS EARLY NEXT YEAR.
AND WE'LL HAVE MUCH MORE COMING UP SOON ON MOTORWEEK .
John: WITH ALL OF THE RECENT EV NEWS COMING AT US, WE THOUGHT IT PRUDENT TO TAKE ANOTHER LOOK AT A TRUE GAME CHANGER, AND SEE WHAT'S NEW WITH THE CHEVROLET BOLT EV.
THE BOLT EV ARRIVED FOR 2017 AND WAS OF COURSE, THE FIRST EV TO HAVE A 200 MILE RANGE, AND COST LESS THAN $30,000.
AND WHILE, MANY EVs SINCE THEN HAVE CROSSED THE 200 MILE THRESHOLD, FEW HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DO IT FOR SUCH A LOW PRICE.
2020 SAW BIG UPDATES WITH MORE STANDARD FEATURES, NEW COLORS, HIGHER DEFINITION CAMERAS, AND EVEN AN ALMOST 10% INCREASE IN RANGE FROM 238 MILES TO 259.
'21 MODELS HAD NO SIGNIFICANT CHANGES OTHER THAN ADDING DC FAST CHARGING AS STANDARD EQUIPMENT WITH PREMIER TRIM, BUT OUR RECENT QUICK SPIN IN IT REMINDED US WHY WE LOVED IT SO MUCH IN THE FIRST PLACE; IT'S ROOMY, PRACTICAL, HIGHLY FUNCTIONAL, EASY TO DRIVE, AND EVEN A LITTLE FUN.
WHICH BRINGS US TO 2022.
NOT ONLY IS THERE A NEW BOLT EV ON THE WAY THIS SUMMER, BUT IT WILL BE JOINED BY A BOLT EUV, CHEVROLET'S FIRST FULLY-ELECTRIC UTILITY.
BRINGING MORE SPACE AND PRACTICALITY INTO THE MIX, THE BOLT EUV WILL HAVE A RANGE OF UP TO 250 MILES ACCORDING TO GM, BUT SADLY, NO ALL-WHEEL-DRIVE.
IT HAS ITS OWN UNIQUE BODY WORK, IS MORE THAN 6.0 INCHES LONGER WITH 3.0 INCHES OF ADDED REAR SEAT LEGROOM, AND WILL BE THE FIRST CHEVROLET TO GET CADILLAC'S SUPER CRUISE DRIVER ASSISTANCE.
AS THE PREVIOUS SUB-$30,000 PRICE WAS MADE POSSIBLE BY FEDERAL TAX CREDITS, WHICH ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE FOR THE 2021 BOLT EV; TECHNICALLY, THE BASE PRICE HAS NOT CHANGED AT $37,495 FOR A BASE LT, BUT MOST BUYERS WILL QUALIFY FOR A HEALTHY DOSE OF INCENTIVES FROM GM TO KEEP THE PRICE ABOUT WHAT IT WAS BEFORE.
AS FOR THE 2022s... WELL, WE'LL HAVE MUCH MORE INFO ON THEM, AS WELL AS PLENTY MORE QUICKSPINS, SOON!
EVER SINCE BENTLEY RESURRECTED THE FLYING SPUR NAME FOR THE 4-DOOR VERSION OF THE CONTINENTAL GT COUPE, IT'S BEEN THE EMBODIMENT OF A BRITISH-STYLE LUXURY PERFORMANCE SEDAN.
WELL...NOW, IT'S TIME FOR A NEW CHAPTER, WITH AN ALL-NEW THIRD GENERATION OF THE FLYING SPUR, AND IT LOOKS TO BE A REAL PAGE-TURNER.
* THERE ARE LUXURY SEDANS, AND THEN THERE ARE OPULENT EXTRAVAGANCES THAT CAN BARELY BE DESCRIBED AS SIMPLE MODES OF TRANSPORTATION.
THIS 2020 BENTLEY FLYING SPUR IS ONE SUCH EXAMPLE.
LET'S START WITH THE INTERIOR.
THE MOVING PICTURES YOU'RE SEEING RIGHT NOW REALLY DON'T DO THIS SPACE JUSTICE; IT IS IMMACULATE AND LUXURIOUS, WITH MATERIALS THAT FEEL MUSEUM QUALITY.
IT'S ALL ABOUT THE DETAILS HERE, FROM THE DIAMOND STITCHING, TO THE ORGAN STOP VENT CONTROLS, AND HAND-FASHIONED STEERING WHEEL.
OLD-WORLD CRAFTSMANSHIP, THOUGH NOT OUT OF TOUCH, AS A 2,200 WATT 18 SPEAKER NAIM [NAME] FOR BENTLEY STEREO, ROTATING DISPLAY, AND FULL NAVIGATION IN THE DIGITAL INSTRUMENT CLUSTER KEEP IT MORE THAN RELEVANT; PLUS, ALL THE CONNECTIVITY OPTIONS BUYERS NOW EXPECT.
REAR SEAT PASSENGERS ARE TREATED SPECIAL AS WELL, WITH THEIR OWN TOUCHSCREEN, DARK SUNSHADES, AND PLENTY OF ROOM TO STRETCH OUT.
TO THE OUTSIDE WORLD, WE MAY BE JUST HUMBLE PUBLIC TELEVISION EMPLOYEES, BUT INSIDE HERE, WE FELT INSANELY RICH.
WITH THE CONTINENTAL GT COUPE THAT THE FLYING SPUR IS BASED ON, RECENTLY REVISED AND NOW ROAMING ON THE PORSCHE PANAMERA CHASSIS; IT WAS TIME FOR THE FLYING SPUR TO MAKE THE SWITCH AS WELL.
IT ALSO SHARES THE BENTAYGA SUVs 48-VOLT ANTI-ROLL BARS THAT VIRTUALLY ELIMINATE BODY ROLL IN CORNERS, BUT DO SO WITHOUT IT FEELING LIKE AN UNNATURAL INTERVENTION; LENDING A SURREAL NATURE TO THE WHOLE DRIVING EXPERIENCE.
SORT OF LIKE BEING ON A HIGH SPEED TRAIN, WHERE THE SCENERY IS A BLUR, AND YOU'RE JUST FLOATING ALONG.
IT WAS MUCH THE SAME MORE THAN 30 YEARS AGO WHEN WE GOT OUR FIRST TASTE OF THE BENTLEY LIFESTYLE, WHEN IN THE LATE 1980s, THEN PARENT COMPANY ROLLS-ROYCE BROUGHT THE TURBO R TO THE STATES.
IT WAS A NEAR SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE, AS THE HYDRAULIC SELF-LEVELLING SUSPENSION ALLOWED THE TURBO R TO TACKLE ANY ROAD EQUALLY, FROM GLASS SMOOTH HIGHWAY TO ROUGH COUNTRY LANES, WITHOUT LOSING COMPOSURE.
BACK IN THE PRESENT TIME AT OUR TEST TRACK.
AFTER A BRIEF "GET TO KNOW YOU" PHASE WITH THE LIGHT BUT PRECISE STEERING; THE FLYING SPUR HANDLED EXCEPTIONALLY WELL FOR SUCH A BIG CAR.
NEW REAR-WHEEL STEER CUTS DOWN ON THE AMOUNT OF UNDERSTEER, AND WE COULD REALLY CARRY SOME SPEED THROUGH HERE WITH RELATIVE EASE.
THE BEST PART OF IT ALL HOWEVER, IS THE LIVING, BREATHING 6.0 LITER'S WORTH OF ALUMINUM TURBOCHARGED W12 ENGINE UNDER THE ELEGANT HOOD.
BENTLEY CALLS IT, "THE MOST ADVANCED 12-CYLINDER ENGINE IN THE WORLD."
WE JUST CALL IT, "A VELVET HAMMER OF AWESOMENESS;" POUNDING THE PAVEMENT, THROUGH AN 8-SPEED DUAL-CLUTCH TRANSMISSION AND ALL-WHEEL-DRIVE, WITH 626 HORSEPOWER, AND 664 POUND-FEET OF TORQUE THAT IS AVAILABLE AT JUST ABOUT ANY RPM.
IT'S ALL ENOUGH TO MOVE THIS 5,500 POUND BEHEMOTH TO 60 IN JUST 3.7 SECONDS.
IT LAUNCHES HARD AND FAST, WITH PLENTY OF GRIP, AND THE UNRELENTING SENSE OF POWER NEVER REALLY SUBSIDES AS YOU WORK YOUR WAY DOWN THE TRACK.
YOU BARELY HEAR ANY ENGINE NOISE AT ALL, AND WHAT YOU DO HEAR, SOUNDS LIKE IT IS COMING FROM SOME OTHER VEHICLE WAY OFF IN THE DISTANCE, NOT JUST A FEW FEET IN FRONT OF YOU.
AUTOMATIC SHIFTS ARE FAST AND FIRM, AND WHEN THE QUARTER-MILE ENDS IN 11.9 SECONDS AT 119 MILES PER HOUR, THE SPEEDOMETER MAY BE PUSHING 120, BUT THE RIDE IS SO SMOOTH AND WELL-COMPOSED, IT FEELS MORE LIKE 20.
THOUGH, YOU'RE REMINDED OF THE LAWS OF PHYSICS WHEN YOU HIT THE BRAKES.
STILL, A 111 FOOT STOPPING DISTANCE FROM 60 IS EXCEPTIONAL FOR A CAR THIS SIZE.
THERE'S WELL OVER 17 FEET OF LENGTH HERE, WITH FIVE MORE INCHES OF WHEELBASE THAN BEFORE; ALL WRAPPED IN GORGEOUSLY SCULPTED SHEET-METAL.
LOTS OF UNIQUE DETAILS HERE TOO; FROM THE CHANDELIER-LIKE HEADLIGHTS, TO AN ALL-NEW HIDEAWAY FLYING B LEADING THE WAY.
OUR MOROCCAN BLUE TESTER FEATURED BLACKLINE TRIM, BUT OF COURSE, CHROME IS ALSO AVAILABLE, AND THE STANDARD 21 INCH WHEELS WERE UPGRADED TO 22s.
GOVERNMENT FUEL ECONOMY RATINGS ARE JUST 15-CITY, 19-HIGHWAY, AND 15-COMBINED; WITH OUR AVERAGE, 16.6 MILES PER GALLON OF PREMIUM.
SO, IT'S A MUCH WORSE THAN AVERAGE ENERGY IMPACT SCORE; 22.0 BARRELS OF YEARLY OIL CONSUMPTION, WITH 9.9 TONS OF CO2 EMISSIONS.
WITH A STARTING PRICE OF $219,425, THE FLYING SPUR IS CERTAINLY NOT FOR EVERYONE, AND BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THERE ARE ACTUALLY A FEW DIFFERENT ULTRA-LUXURY SEDANS TO CHOOSE FROM AT THAT PRICE POINT, BUT NONE THAT EXHIBIT THE SHEER POWER AND GRACEFULNESS FOUND HERE.
WELL, THAT'S OUR SHOW, I HOPE YOU ENJOYED IT.
NOW FOR MORE MOTORWEEK ; INCLUDING DAILY NEWS UPDATES, PODCASTS, AND EVEN COMPLETE EPISODES, CRUISE ON OVER TO PBS.ORG/MOTORWEEK.
AND I HOPE YOU'LL JOIN US NEXT TIME, FOR A CADILLAC CT4 ROADTEST BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE LETTER V. THEN, WE'LL GO-GO GODZILLA IN THE NISSAN GTR NISMO.
PAT GOSS RACKS 'EM UP WHILE BRIAN ROBINSON GETS HIS BRITISH MOTOR RUNNING.
PLUS, AN UPDATE ON OUR LONG TERM TEST FLEET AND A BRAND NEW QUICKSPIN.
TIL' THEN, I'M JOHN DAVIS, WE'LL SEE YOU RIGHT HERE ON MOTORWEEK !
