JOHN: For 2023, all Volvo cars sold in the US are either hybrid gasoline-electric or fully-electric.
That sounds like a bright idea to us, but in order to dig deeper, we'll have to turn to the dark side with a test of this Volvo S60 Recharge Black Edition.
♪ ♪ While, this particular 2023 Volvo S60 sedan is labeled a Black Edition, it's actually dressed in all white, giving it a White House Black Market vibe.
But we're not mall-walking past Foot Locker on the way to Cinnabon here, we're cruising in luxury and style in Volvo's latest Ultimate all-wheel-drive sedan, and doing it quite efficiently, as it retails Volvo's latest T8 Recharge plug-in powertrain.
Pairing Volvo's now familiar 2.0 liter turbo-4 engine with a larger 107 kilowatt electric motor mounted in the rear means standard all-wheel-drive and an impressive, combined output of 455 horsepower and 523 pound-feet of torque.
It all works seamlessly through an 8-speed automatic transmission, and not only does it recapture energy through regen braking like most battery assisted vehicles, but Volvo has even incorporated EV-like One Pedal driving.
Forty-one miles of all-electric driving is possible from an 18.8 kilowatt hour battery.
Now, the most we saw was 38, but our overall average of 31.7 is consistent with the Government Fuel Economy Combined rating of 31; with the MPGe rating at 74-Combined.
And that's a great Energy Impact Score, using only 3.1 barrels of oil annually, with 1.6 tons of CO2 emissions.
Standard powertrain is now known as B5 and is a mild-hybrid version of the 2.0 liter turbo with 247 horsepower.
Available only in Onyx Black or this Crystal White, Black Edition adds to the already present glossy black trim with fully blacked out grille, unique badging, and 19 inch alloy wheels in black, of course.
This is on top of a slightly redesigned front end for all S60s, now using the logo to integrate the forward pointing camera and radar.
The rear bumper is also reformed, with no visible exhaust pipes showing, and new wheel designs are available across the lineup.
This 3rd generation S60 has been on the road since 2019 and is the smaller of two remaining sedans in the Volvo lineup.
Changes inside mostly revolve around the center stack where the vertically oriented 9.0 inch infotainment touchscreen has been upgraded to the Google-based system we've experienced in the XC60 as well as the Polestar 2 EV.
Black Editions are outfitted with charcoal leather, but vegan options are available.
There's also unique charcoal material for the headliner to go along with notable existing S60 elements such as the crystal gear selector, glossy black trim, 12 inch digital driver display, and panoramic moonroof.
But it was our trip to Mason Dixon Dragway that impressed us most.
Five-hundred-twenty-three pound-feet of torque is no joke, and the S60 is perfectly tuned to handle it, launching aggressively to 60 in a scant 4.3 seconds.
Not too many family sedans get it done that quickly, and being able to win just about every stop light grand prix in a humble looking Volvo sedan is sweet indeed, making it possibly the ultimate sleeper machine on the road right now.
Sign us up!
Shifts were silky smooth with no power loss in between gears.
We finished out the quarter-mile in 12.8 seconds at 111 miles per hour.
When in EV mode, the S60 is strictly a rear-wheel-drive car, though handling remains more competent than exciting, as Volvo does prioritize safety above all else; so, it will only let you get away with just so much fun.
But by keeping our inputs ultra-smooth we were able to carry surprising speed through our cone course with hardly any body roll.
Braking was also quite good as expected, stopping us from 60 in just 112 feet with consistent results and great stability.
Finally, Volvo has adjusted their packaging for this year, incorporating more standard content like, wireless phone charging into what is now the base Core model which starts at $42,395 with the B5 powertrain.
Ultimate is the new top tier, with Plus in between, which puts this Recharge T8 Ultimate at $57,795 to start, and $59,045 for the Black Edition.
Surprising acceleration, great EV-only range, luxurious accommodations, and sensible pricing all make this 2023 Volvo S60 Recharge Black Edition a plug-in hybrid winner; and its sleeper performance sedan attitude makes it something truly special.
So, it is sad to us that Volvo is ramping down production of all internal combustion engine cars, as this one can also play the role of a true EV for extended periods of time.
It's perfect for those looking to go electric now, but don't want to have to plan their next weekend getaway around finding a plug.

♪ ♪ LOGAN MCCOMBS: Maintaining your car or truck means working with a number of different fluids and chemicals, and to do that safely, there are a few things you need to know.
First off, whenever you're in the garage working on your car, it's a good idea to wear gloves.
These disposable ones are cheap and easy to use.
Not only will they keep your hands clean, but they can prevent injury and chemical burns as well.
Keep all aerosol cans, fluid bottles, and dispenser tubes in a secure cabinet or shelf out of reach of children and pets.
Some may require a cool or ventilated area.
Read the label of any chemical you are unfamiliar with.
Some epoxies, paints, solvents, and fuels may emit harmful odors that require the use of a respirator.
You may not realize it, but brake fluid begins absorbing water from the air as soon as the container is unsealed.
And even if the bottle is closed, it should be discarded after a year... Those big bottles may look like a bargain, but unless you do frequent brake repairs and system bleeds, keeping a small bottle on hand for top offs is usually enough.
Most any fluid or chemical used for your car can be harmful for you and the environment, if not stored and disposed of properly.
When it comes to trans fluid, power steering fluid, oils, and antifreeze, they can all be and recycled into new fluids.
So, check with your local city or county recycling program for specifics on how and where to drop them off.
In general, fluids must be kept separate and not mixed, and they must be stored in proper containers.
For used oil, this might be the bottle your new oil came in, or an oil change catch pan that drains into a sealable jug.
Fuel and other flammable liquids are considered hazardous and must be handled differently, but many of them can be recycled into alternative fuels.
Milk bottles and other lightweight plastic or cardboard containers are generally not suitable for flammables.

♪ ♪ GREG CARLOSS: Aston Martin is celebrating 75 years of their DB series in the best way possible: a new entry...this DB12.
And they're so proud of the DB12, they invented a whole new street segment for it: "super tourer."
But what exactly is that?
At its heart is a 4.0 liter twin turbocharged V8 engine-- that's the "super" part-- with 671 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque.
It's paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission, sending power to the rear wheels.
As for "tourer", that denotes a refined level of sporty, yet comfortable ride and handling, which Aston Martin delivers through a combination of stiffer bonded aluminum structure, intelligent adaptive dampers, and an electronic rear differential.
Both steering and suspension response are well integrated, and tethered to selectable drive modes ranging from "normal" to "sport-plus."
STEPHANIE HART: It's a comfortable ride in GT mode, and then when you put it in Sport mode and Sport Plus, you really feel its sports car soul shining bright.
GREG: When at a standstill, you'll be able to read the "Michelin Pilot Sport 5S" scripture embedded on the tire sidewalls, grippy rubber wrapping 21 inch wheels.
As for the rest of the exterior... Well, despite having just coined the segment, the DB12 looks exactly how we envision a "super tourer" would.
STEPHANIE: To get the full French Riviera experience, I just had to drive DB12 through casino square in Monte Carlo.
It's the star of the show and as you can imagine, it's getting tons of looks.
GREG: And the interior matches with a properly luxurious cabin, completed by the brand's first in-house infotainment system joined by plenty of physical controls.
The 2024 Aston Martin DB12 is a genre-defining vehicle-- literally.
On sale now, prospective buyers of this super tourer will need to cough up a cool quarter-million to get behind the wheel of their very own.
JESSICA RAY: Buick's recent success in small SUVs was forged with the Encore GX; but not to rest on their laurels, they're doubling-down with an all-new model, and nameplate, the 2024 Envista.
Reportedly their last new internal combustion engine clean sheet effort before going all EV, the Envista is just under 183 inches long, or about a foot longer than the Encore GX.
Sharing under skin bits with the Chevrolet Trax, the Envista rides on a 106.3 inch wheelbase.
That gives the cabin nearly 39 inches of rear legroom and almost 21 cubic-feet of trunk storage.
Fold that second row down and cargo capacity picks up to a respectable 42 cubic-feet.
As to that ICE engine, it's a 1.2 liter inline-3 turbo.
With 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque being sent to the front wheels only through a 6-speed automatic, the Envista is rather peppy when you need it to be.
A Watts link rear suspension is standard on the top-trim Avenir.
It limits suspension lateral motion providing both a more controlled ride and more responsive handling, and it's our clear choice.
I know, I hear a collective groan when we say ah, that there is a 3-cylinder engine under the hood of a car, but power should not be a problem in this vehicle.
And it's just overall, it handles itself really well on the highway, at highway speeds.
I was going 70 miles per hour, that was the speed limit on the highway I was on, and it was very comfortable.
It wasn't too loud.
I felt like, it was very stable.
So...overall, the Envista just does a lot of things really good.
Cabin styling does change slightly between all three trims, that's the Preferred, ST and Avenir-- but Buick's Virtual Cockpit System comes standard in all three, consisting of an 11 inch infotainment screen and an 8.0 inch instrument cluster.
Even at its entry-point, the 2024 Buick Envista is well-enough equipped for the budget-conscious buyer, starting at about $23,500 with delivery.
Orders are open now, with dealership arrivals expected this fall.
And we'll have more QuickSpins, soon!
JOHN: It's not a stretch to say that the newest Land Rover Defender is the best Defender ever.
But, Land Rover has a different kind of stretch in mind for their latest Defender, the kind that enables you to bring more people along for the ride.
So, join us for an adventure in the new Defender 130.
♪ ♪ No doubt this latest 2nd generation Land Rover Defender is more refined than ever; but for 2023, it's also bigger than ever with a new Defender 130.
Working with the same 119 inch wheelbase as the 5-door 110, there's more than 13 inches of overall length added, and to be honest, stretching strictly the rear body like that does make it look a little awkward, but certainly no less ruggedly appealing.
For now, buyers can choose between one of two turbocharged inline 6-cylinder options, the base 296 horsepower P300, and our mild hybrid P400 with 395 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque.
A 493 horsepower P500 supercharged V8 will be available in '24.
Regardless of which route you take, there's more than enough grunt to move this longer 130, which is heavier than the 110 by only a couple of hundred pounds.
Power delivery is smooth and steady, aided by the mild-hybrid system which is primarily in place for stop/start, but can add a little extra oomph at launch to cancel turbo lag.
But it's really all about adding more space inside; so, a 3rd row is standard, featuring belts for three, providing seating for a total of 8-passengers relatively comfortably.
There's more cargo space behind that 40/20/40 third row, 13.7 cubic-feet, up from 10.5 on the 110.
Behind the 2nd row, 43.5.
While, all seats down yields 80.9 cubic-feet.
Of course, one thing that doesn't change no matter how much it has grown is off-road ability.
And indeed, like every other Land Rover, it's so capable that it's mostly boring in rugged terrain situations, as the only hard work comes in selecting the proper terrain response mode; the Defender takes it from there.
We felt much more involved at our Mason Dixon test track where the 130 left the line more in a smooth and steady fashion than overly aggressive, but power built rapidly as we got moving, hitting 60 in 6.3 seconds.
The engine whines more than growls, but the 8-speed automatic transmission keeps things right in the heart of the power band with timely and smooth shifts.
Quarter-mile completed in 14.6 seconds at 97 miles per hour.
On the braking end, there was a soft pedal and a good bit of nosedive, but a very solid overall feel and short stops from 60 of just 115 feet.
The standard air suspension delivers a ride that's more firm than floaty, but when it comes to handling, it felt a little lethargic through our cone course, with nowhere near the amount of precision we experienced over on the Range Rover side.
Though, steering was quick and light, and there's wasn't too much body roll, but that's mostly because we had to keep speeds very low to prevent stability control systems from shutting down our efforts.
The 130's interior environment and seat comfort, however, are not far off the Range Rover's luxury experience.
Even if you opt for the synthetic leather, now available across the Defender line, for those wanting to avoid true cow hide.
There's also new 4-zone climate control, along with plenty of storage nooks for all seating positions.
With numerous trim levels and multiple powertrain options, there are an enormous number of Defenders to choose from.
Just know the 130 starts at $70,575 and tops out with the V8 at $118,075.
Bigger isn't always better, but if you've got a large family full of adventure seekers, the 2023 Land Rover Defender 130 is clearly a better option for spending some quality time well off the beaten path.
And it's not too big as a daily driver either.
