I saw them, and I thought, "I've never seen anything like that before."
So I went and talked to the guy, and he said they were 19th-century Japanese.
And that's all I know.
APPRAISER: Japan and China are very different, but they also share a lot of imagery that's the same.
I think these are Chinese versions in a Japanese style, and something that was created probably not in the late 19th century, but more likely about 1920, 1930?
GUEST: Yeah.
APPRAISER: Because at that time, there was a lot of exchange, interaction between China and Japan.
But at auction setting, these are somewhere in the, uh, $3,000 to $5,000 range.
And I have to say, I've never seen another, another pair.
GUEST: Nor have I.
(laughs) APPRAISER: I've seen a lot of things.
