Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipGUEST: I inherited this from my brother-in-law.
It was in his safe when we finally got it open.
That was almost two years ago.
And I know that, uh, my father-in-law was a watch collector, but I didn't know that all of this was in there.
APPRAISER: You have lots of beautiful watches in here.
The two most important ones is a gold automaton.
If it's working properly, it will chime for the quarter-hour and it will strike the bells up there to tell you what time it is.
And then this is a really unusual one.
This is a double-barrel quarter repeater.
(chime ringing softly) GUEST: Oh!
APPRAISER: You can hear it?
GUEST: Yeah.
APPRAISER: It's, oh, it's a chimer.
They both are about 1750-- he had great-quality stuff.
The gold automaton, if it was running properly, it would be about a $5,000, $6,000 watch.
In this condition, I'd say a little less, probably $4,000?
GUEST: Wow.
GUEST: Wow.
APPRAISER: It's really beautiful.
The silver one, probably something about $3,000 in today's market.
GUEST: Oh, wow.
APPRAISER: Yeah.
