APPRAISER: About what time?
GUEST: 1948-1949.
APPRAISER: Right at the tail end of the Republic period in China.
GUEST: Yeah.
APPRAISER: Yes.
Just on the cusp of the Communist Revolution, when a lot of missionaries were politely asked to exit the nation.
GUEST: (laughs): Yes.
APPRAISER: It is a white jade plaque.
It has an inscription on the back, which is poetic, but more importantly, it's signed, and the name is Zigang.
And Zigang is a famous name in jade carvers.
This is an 18th-century carving, perhaps early 19th century.
GUEST: Wow.
GUEST: Wow.
APPRAISER: Yeah, so it was not, by no means a new gift.
It was an antique.
What do you think it's worth?
GUEST: No idea.
No idea.
APPRAISER: Have you never had it appraised?
GUEST: No.
GUEST: No.
APPRAISER: I think I would put perhaps a conservative auction estimate in 2023...
GUEST: Uh-huh.
APPRAISER: ...of $10,000 to $15,000 on this pendant.
GUEST: No!
Wow!
GUEST: Wow!
GUEST: Mom just wears it.
(laughing) GUEST: She just wears it to work or church.
APPRAISER: If she keeps it carefully, I think that's a good...
GUEST: Yes.
APPRAISER: ...that's a good place to, to keep it safe...
GUEST: Wow.
APPRAISER: ...and keep it close at hand.
It's lovely.
