THERE ARE WINE LOVERS, AND THEN THERE ARE WINE LOVERS LIKE THOSE WHO ESTABLISHED THE CELLARS UNDER VIENNA'S PALAIS COBURG.
AND WE ARE WALKING AMONG ONE OF THE MOST EXTENSIVE WINE COLLECTIONS IN THE WORLD, AND IT HAS A LONG HISTORY.
>> VERY MUCH SO.
THIS HAS BEEN BUILT IN 1555 AFTER THE FIRST INVASION OF THE TURKS.
AND WE HAVE A COLLECTION OF ABOUT 65,000 BOTTLES OF WINE HERE.
>> Rosendo: HOW WONDERFUL.
>> IT HAS BEEN DIVIDED UP INTO SIX CELLARS.
WE HAVE A CELLAR EXCLUSIVELY FOR FRENCH WINES, A WINE CELLAR ONLY FOR NEW-WORLD WINES, CHATEAU D'YQUEM CELLAR, CHAMPAGNE CELLAR, A CELLAR FOR RARE WINES, AND THIS BEAUTIFUL CELLAR IS FOR AUSTRIAN WINES AS WELL AS WINES FROM THE REST OF THE OLD WORLD.
>> Rosendo: IT CERTAINLY IS A BEAUTIFUL AND VERY MODERN-LOOKING CELLAR WITH ALL GLASS.
>> ABSOLUTELY.
IT'S SUPPOSED TO SHOW OFF THE NEW TRANSPARENCY IN AUSTRIAN WINEMAKING AFTER THE WINE SCANDAL IN THE '80s.
>> Rosendo: AND THE WINE SCANDAL, WHAT WAS THAT ABOUT?
>> WELL, SOME WINERIES PUT SOME ANTIFREEZE INTO THEIR WINES, AND AFTER THAT, THE LAW WAS CHANGED, AND NOWADAYS WE HAVE ONE OF THE MOST RESTRICTIVE WINE LAWS IN THE WORLD.
>> Rosendo: WELL, I'VE LEARNED THE BEST THING TO DO WHEN YOU HAVE A GLASS LIKE THIS IN YOUR HAND IS TO RAISE IT.
>> ABSOLUTELY.

>> Rosendo: IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBT THAT THE AUSTRIANS LOVE THEIR WINE, CONSIDER THE FACT THAT THE VIENNESE VINEYARDS WERE BEGUN 2,000 YEARS AGO AND ARE THE ONLY ONES IN THE WORLD GROWING WITHIN A COSMOPOLITAN CENTER'S CITY LIMITS.
THEY'RE LESS THAN 20 MINUTES BY CAR, BUS, OR TRAIN FROM THE HEART OF THE CITY.
WE'RE NOW ON THE HILLS OVERLOOKING AUSTRIA'S CAPITAL, VIENNA.
AND I'M WITH FRITZ WIENINGER.
AND, FRITZ, I UNDERSTAND THAT VIENNA IS ONE OF THE FEW CITIES IN THE WORLD THAT HAS ITS OWN VINEYARDS.

I THINK IT'S ABOUT 700 HECTARES, EVERYTHING WITHIN THE CITY LIMITS, OVERVIEWING THE CITY, AND MAKING A LOT OF WINE.

BORDERING LAKE NEUSIEDL 30 MILES SOUTH OF VIENNA, BURGENLAND IS AUSTRIA'S SECOND-LARGEST GRAPE-GROWING REGION.
BESIDES ITS WORLD-FAMOUS SWEET WINES, IT PRODUCES AUSTRIA'S TASTIEST REDS.
IN CHARMING VILLAGES LIKE PURBACH, THE WINE LOVER CAN FIND A ZIMMER FREI, A ROOM FOR LET, IN A COZY BED AND BREAKFAST AND ENJOY A EUROPEAN APPRECIATION OF GOOD FOOD AND A CALMER, MORE GRACEFUL VIEW OF LIFE.

SOME OF THEM ARE STILL WINE CELLARS.

THIS HAS BEEN A WINE AREA FOR-- FOR HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF YEARS.
IN FACT, WINE IS SO IMPORTANT HERE THAT SOME TOWNS LIKE RUST ACTUALLY BOUGHT THEIR FREEDOM FROM THE NOBILITY THAT HAD LEASED THEM THE LAND THAT WAS UNDER THE CITY WITH WINE.
