I'm Venice Buhain, in for Paris Jackson.

For more than 20 years, Seattle- based Tasveer has curated and screened films focused on South Asia and its diaspora.

Recently, the nonprofit opened its own movie theater.

We visited founder Rita Meher as the organization gets ready for the next Tasveer South Asian Film Festival.

MEHER: An image can speak thousand words and it permeates deeper and widely very quickly.

VO: Rita Meher says film was her ideal medium to build a platform.

the medium of film is creating something so visually beautiful and sharing it and watching it with everyone under one roof.

VO: Meher co-founded the Tasveer Film Festival to counter hate in the aftermath of 9/11.

MEHER: I experienced some hate incident in Seattle.

So that moment kind of changed me.

And when my friend said, we should do something and start an organization to create a dialog around important social justice topics, I jumped on the idea.

VO: With the Tasveer Film Center, the organization now can showcase films from all over the world as well as from the local community.

MEHER: We started out to serve South Asian community.

We are serving wider community that needs our space, our platform and tell their stories.

and we need also our community's help to help us stay in business and continue on.

Yeah, it's a great place to come watch an independent film.

VO: The 2026 Tasveer South Asian Film Festival runs October 13 through 18.
