Before we go into round two, let's take a break in the action and get to know our players this week.
We'll start with the team from Kingswood Regional High School, Kingswood Regional High School is located in Wolfeboro, but serves many of the surrounding towns in that part of the lakes region.
And we're going to start down here on the end with Spencer.
And Spencer, it says here you competed in something called skills USA and placed first in the state in three axis CNC machining.
What is that?
I did.
So skills USA overall is a competition that's comprised of a collection of skills.
Each has their own individual like miniature competition.
I competed in, three axis machining, which in layman's terms, if you can imagine a drill bit that can cut sideways and you get to tell it where you want to go, it can cut anything to make anything.
So metal wood, it doesn't matter.
Exactly.
First in the state, first in the state.
All right.
Excellent.
Keep it up.
All right.
Joining Spencer is Sam who is, you have a pretty cool job maybe on a ski mountain.
A local ski mountain.
Tell us about it.
Yeah, I'm a volunteer ski patroller at King Pines ski area.
Okay.
And what does the typical day for, ski patroller look like for you?
Do a lot of skiing around looking for people who have fallen and gotten hurt.
End up doing a lot of courtesy rides for people come up the lift and, just can't quite make it back down to the bottom.
Gotcha.
And the courtesy ride means?
So one of our other patrollers gets to bring down a sled.
We call it a toboggan.
And it's, give them a ride down the mountain, get to sit in the back, and we get to pull from the handles in the front and bring them all the way down.
Excellent.
All right, well, keep that up.
Next on the team is, Jiner, who is fully fluent in what?
In Mandarin.
Okay.
How'd you learn Mandarin?
So, I was initially born in New York, and then I moved to China for a few years, lived there and went to school there for a bit.
And that's how I learned.
All right.
And you still speak it sometimes in the home and everything.
The whole family speaks it.
So.
All right.
You want to share anything with us in Mandarin?
Oh, yeah.
Of course.
Let's do a line.
(Speaking in Chinese) So that just means good afternoon.
It's an honor to be here.
All right.
Excellent.
It's an honor to have you here.
Thank you.
And rounding out the team is team captain Liam.
And, also a competitor.
But instead of CNC machining, what do you compete in?
Speed cubing.
Speed cubing.
So we're talking Rubik's cube.
Yeah.
So your traditional three by three cube.
All right.
And you came in 30th in your most recent competition.
Yeah.
All right.
It was pretty tough competition.
Well, you know, I know some kids who are into that, and they're really, really good.
What's your best time?
I think around 24 seconds.
All right.
I couldn't do it in 24 years.
So 24 seconds sounds pretty good to me.
That is the team from Kingswood Regional High School.
All right.
And next we're going to talk to the team from Portsmouth High School.
Portsmouth is of course in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
But it also serves the towns of Rye and Greenland in addition to Portsmouth and Newington, I believe.
And so we're going to start with Iliya at the end here.
You rode your bike a lot in 2024.
How much did you ride?
I rode 6000 miles.
6000 miles.
So that's like going from here to the West Coast and back.
So, you know, what did you do?
Was if for competition.
What for?
So I race multiple disciplines.
I'm one of the founding members of our road cycling team at Portsmouth High School.
And I race on the mountain bike team as well.
I ride all year round, rain or shine.
Okay.
Hopefully mostly shine.
Yeah.
Hopefully.
Right.
So very cool.
You have a mountain bike team and a road racing team at Portsmouth High School.
Fantastic.
Keep it up.
All right.
Next up is Aadit who is another kind of competitor.
But what do you compete in?
I'm a four time national qualify for debate.
So we're talking like speech and debate.
How does that how does that work?
What does a competition look like?
Yeah.
So the style of debate is public forum where each team will give a speech and then the other team has a chance to appose it.
And then in the end, the winner is decided by a judge.
All right.
And you do this by yourself, with a team.
Yeah.
So we have a partnership and then the partnership.
Each partner gives a speech, and eventually whoever can give the strongest speech is obviously the best.
All right.
So four time national qualifier.
Let's see if we can get you a national championship this year.
All right.
Next up is Jack, who is a recent, resident of New Hampshire.
Where did you move from?
I moved from Minnesota about four years ago.
Four years ago?
From Minnesota.
Where in Minnesota you from?
Twin cities area.
Okay.
Twin cities area.
Okay.
How is the transition to New Hampshire been thus far?
It's been great.
I've really enjoyed the change of scenery.
Oh, yeah.
When we were all pretty friendly.
Maybe not Minnesota friendly, but we're pretty friendly.
What's your favorite part of New Hampshire so far?
I like being by the beach and close to some mountains.
Yep.
Yeah, you can do it all.
Beach, mountain, city.
Right.
You got it all in close proximity.
Well, welcome here.
We're glad to have you here.
And then the captain of the team is Nolan, who has done something that I don't recommend.
And you don't recommend, which is what?
Trying to get on a moving train.
I was at a cross-country meet, and I see the North Conway Scenic Express running by, and I think to myself, that doesn't look like it's moving that fast.
I bet I could get on there.
Wait for all but the last car to pass.
There's, like, these two handles sticking out there just yelling, grab me.
You shouldn't.
I grab it.
This thing yanks me, throws me on the ground.
I hit it like an earthquake.
It hurt.
Bad idea.
Yeah, I don't recommend it.
And while you lived to tell the tale, Nolan, I would not recommend anybody at home.
Try this at home.
Unless you're cool.
All right, there we go.
And that is the team from Portsmouth High School.
All right, teams, thanks for that break in the action.
We're going to pick right back up into the game with round two which is our three strikes and you're out round.
So we do this one by one team by team.
And the way it works is this.
Each team gets ten questions.
We go down the line.
Each player gets a question.
And we keep going until all ten questions are asked or until three strikes and you're out.
Each team has three passes that you can use in.
Just a reminder that something in the previous question will be the inspiration for the next question.
All right.
So be on the lookout for that.
We will start alphabetically.
Kingswood.

In our 60 second round, each team gets ten questions in 60 seconds to answer as many as they can.
