-Howdy.
-We are so happy to be the first show back at ACL.
This is so freakin' awesome.
[ Cheers and applause ] We, uh -- We are on a journey together on a special project we did that we went and made in Marfa, Texas, and, um it's just -- it's a magical place.
And we're all from Texas, all different parts.
Jon and I are from Central East Texas, and Jack's from Houston, but, you know, when you go out to the West Side, there's something totally different.
There's a whole different magic.
So, we're gonna do songs off the new project tonight.
[ Cheers and applause ] Anyway, thank you in advance for going down this songwriter trail with us tonight.
We hope you have some fun and cry a little and laugh a little and drink a lot.
[ Laughter ] Speaking of drinkin', there's been some men in my life that have driven me to drink a little extra.

Anyway, one of those men is the one we wrote this song about.
And the way we work is, you know, we just start talking about our lives, and we meet each other where we are.
And I guess I was on a tangent, and then we got a song out of it, so...
This is one of my favorites.
-You might call it that.

[ Laughter ] There's a -- What I -- From what I hear from what my mother tells me is that there's a few moments, a few minutes when you're in that situation that everything is released.
And for some reason, that -- finding that release has always been important to me, and I think we get real close when we're writing songs, but...
These are the only two people that would ever write a song with me about drowning... and love.
Love till the end.

-If it gets weird up here, it's because we've all been friends for like over 20 years.
[ Laughs ] And I'll tell you what -- It's crazy because, um, I've -- I've been -- I've grown up watching Jack since I was 15, been going to every club around Texas, following him around.
He's one of my heroes.
And -- And Jon -- the same.
We met -- I don't know -- almost 20 years ago.
And just sings like an angel and is an angel of a personality.
And so, sitting up here with these boys, getting to sing songs we wrote in Marfa, Texas, I can't believe it's happening.

-My favorite thing is to write love songs about men with men.

-Anyway, we wrote this song staring at the sunset one day.
We were just looking at the sunset over the desert going down to Marfa and talking about all the people we don't know and the ones we do want to know, and a love song came out of it.
It's called "In His Arms."

-When we pulled up to Marfa, it was 4:00 a.m. the first time we went there.
And we got up to the bunkhouse.
And J.R. says, "Hey, somebody go turn off the front-porch light."
'Cause it was the only light there, and you could see everything in -- in the house.
And we did a round of "odd man out."
-I lost.
-And Miranda lost.
-And so all I heard next was -- She walked up there just... [ Mumbling ] And...she turns off the light.
Then all of a sudden, all you hear is, "Ugh!
Aah!"
-[ Laughter ] -Couldn't see a damn thing.
-And then we looked up, and we understood why Jon had been trying to get us to go to Marfa for all these years, because I'm pretty sure, "The stars at night are big and bright deep in the heart of Texas," was written right underneath that sky.
-Yes.
Absolutely.
Yeah.
-It was beautiful.
-[ Cheers and applause ] -Absolutely.
-But that trip is where we started this love affair with Marfa, and we found ourselves a little songwriting trio over the next six years.
And one of the most magical songs that came from it is -- is "Tin Man," and it was one of those times where we really needed to write it -- all three of us needed to say that.
So we're gonna do our own version of it right now.
A little -- little different version.
-We're gonna make up a version for you here real quick.
-Yeah.

He took three microphones out there, and he just set them up in front of us, and we just poured a drink and just... -Several drinks.

And -- And that's kind of -- that's kind of how that we recorded this, so this is kind of -- This is what it is.
It's not -- It's not made for Vegas.
[ Laughter ] -Well, this is Jon's favorite song on the record, I think.

-But we -- we -- we all have history in a town called Waxahachie, and -- and a lot of people don't even know how to say it or spell it.
Jack's been spelling it wrong for his whole life.

We didn't know we could write songs together, to be honest.
When we disappeared to Marfa, we just -- I needed to get the hell out of Dodge 'cause I was going through a lot in my life.
It was 2015.
And we went and saw Jack play in Midland.
And then we drove on out, like he said.
And the next morning, we kind of got up, had some coffee, and probably a biscuit or seven.
And, um -- And this was the first song that came out of the whole trio.
I mean, we probably thought we were gonna write some songs.
We brought guitars and tequila, so what else would happen?
But... We just realized, when we wrote this song, that there was something magical -- more than our friendship and more than the place, but us trying to, you know, say some things into the world that we needed to say, so we're real proud of this one, and it started the whole shebang.

And we happened to see this storm coming in from a hundred miles away -- you could see it forever.
