Dear Ms. Lara, of course I would want milk after eating cookies.
Ooh do you remember our mouse run yesterday?
Had some cookies, and then wanted milk, and then a straw, and then a broom, and then a mop.
And it went on, and on, and on.
Who wouldn't?
That's true.
Have you ever done one thing and it's led to another?
Yes, I've done lots of things where I do one thing then it leads to another, then another.
That's just how it goes, isn't it?
Have you ever done anything like that?
I think Ms. Maria left the book in the box.
She wanted us to guess what it is.
So let's see.
I do know that it is by our author Laura Numeroff.
We're reading one book of hers a week a day all this week.
So let's see what she has here.
Oh, what is this?
Do you recognize this?
It's a kite.
So I know that our book is going to have a kite.
I wonder if the kite flies way up in the air and gets caught on anything?
Let's see what else she put down here.
An apple, a kite, and an apple.
I don't see any cookies in here.
Maybe the character likes to eat apples, what do you think?
I don't know.
Let's look, oh no, this is a really silly clue.
A kite, an apple and a dog bone?
Now I'm really confused.
What could this book be about?
And then we have our last clue which is some apple juice.
So we know the book is gonna be about apples, and apple juice, a kite and a dog bone.
Do you think you know what it is?
Let's do the grand reveal, here comes the box.
"If You Gave A Dog A Donut", that's our book.
That's where the dog bone comes from, got it now.
It is written by Laura Numeroff, she's the author.
That means she writes the words.
And it's illustrated by Felicia Bond.
The illustrator draws the pictures.
Now just like our book that we read yesterday it's an if then book, meaning one thing happens and it leads to another.
So let's see.
We'll open it up and go to the first page.
If you give a dog a donut, if you give a dog a donut, here's the dog begging for some donuts.
If you have a dog at home, like my dog it follows you around whenever you eat anything.
Of course, he'll ask you for some apple juice to go with it.
When you give him the juice, he'll drink it all up.
Can you drink it all up with me?
(laughing) Then he'll ask for more.
He's so disappointed there's non left.
There won't be any left so he'll want to make his own.
He'll go outside to pick some apples.
He must have an apple tree in his backyard.
When he's up in the tree, he'll toss you one, throwing the apple will make him think of baseball of course.
So look, there's the little boy catching the apple.
He'll want to play.
You'll have to get a ball and a glove.
Have you ever played baseball with a dog before?
Of course he'll meet a bat, he'll ask you to pitch.
When you pitch it's when you throw a ball at someone like that when you're playing baseball.
He'll hit a home run, hooray.
Then he'll do a happy dance to celebrate, like this.
(laughing) His happy dance involves cartwheels.
Dancing will make him hot and dusty so he'll need some water.
He'll probably start a water fight.
You'll have to dry him off with your bandana.
Oh there was a bandana and the other book too.
Have you had many water fights this summer?
It's been hot enough huh?
He'll wrap the bandana around his head and pretend that he's a pirate.
Then he'll want to go on that treasure hunt.
He'll find an old kite and want to make one himself.
Oh that was in our clue, a kite.
You'll have to get him some sticks, paper and string.
When the kite is finished, he'll want to fly it.
It will go higher, and higher, and higher until it gets tangled all up in the apple tree.
Then of course the tree will remind him of?
What will the tree remind him of?
Can you remember?
Apples.
What did he asked for earlier to drink?
That's right, apple juice.
So he'll probably ask you for some.
And chances are, if he asks you for some apple juice he'll want a donut to go with it.
What did you think boys and girls?
Did you enjoy this story about a dog eating a donut?
Remember that you can find stories like this on Sora and at your local library.
So I love reading books to you, but of course the goal is for you to read to me.
And one way that we practice our reading skills is by looking out our beginning sounds and pulling apart words.
So we're gonna look at our beginning sound right now.
So our beginning sound is the first sound you hear in a word.
So let's see our magic letter today.
The letter M, we're gonna try to find things that start with the letter, M. So let's see, the first one is mop.
Does mop sound like M at the beginning?
Mop, it does.
All right, let's put it up here with our letter M. M for mop.
How about this one mirror, mirror.
Does it say M at the beginning?
Mirror, M. Yes, okay.
Wow, we're finding lots of M words today.
Mop and mirror.
How about this one?
Oh, do you own one of these?
A backpack.
Does backpack at the M beginning?
No, that would say Mac pack.
That would be a silly word.
Let's put it down here.
How about this one?
This is a cookie, yum just like yesterday from our book.
Delicious cookies.
Does cookie say at M beginning?
No, that would be mookie.
Ooh another silly word, down you go.
How about this one?
A little mouse.
Does mouse say M at the beginning?
It does, mouse.
All right, so far we have mouse, mirror and mop that's M at the beginning.
Let's try one more here.
Look at this little guy.
He has a milk mustache.
Does that say M at the beginning?
It does, doesn't it.
Milk and mustache both start with M. So let's review our letter M words before we move on to our project.
We have a mop, a milk mustache, a mouse and a mirror that all began with the letter M. I hope that you keep practicing at home.
Right now I have a couple of activities that you can do to extend the story and begin to learn at home as well.
So let's go over to the project place.
Here we go.
Now in our story, the dog loves to eat what?
Donuts, that's right.
So I thought we would make this, it's donut cloud dough.
Now when you touch it it feels a little fluffier than play dough.
And what I did is I put sprinkles in it to make it look like real donuts when we lay it out and roll it out, which we'll do in a minute.
So for this activity you'll need a couple of ingredients, actually just two.
And some sprinkles, of course.
You'll need some corn starch.
So you may have this in your pantry at home, or you can go to the place where everything costs a dollar, that's where I got my corn starch.
And you'll need some conditioner.
You can also use this baby oil to make this activity, but conditioner has the added bonus of smelling delicious when you mix it in with the corn starch.
So it's pretty much a two to one ratio.
So you're gonna put two cups of corn starch in.
And you know my friend Mrs. Hammock likes to remind us that cooking and reading recipes is a big part of literacy as well, and it is.
I think I'm gonna use all the cornstarch we have here.
It looks like it's about what I need.
I'll saved that container, who knows it might become a robot later.
Some sort of oven mitch with massara you never know.
So I about a cup here, so I'll put that in.
Now, because I know it's about a two to one ratio I will put in about half a cup of conditioner.
Well, maybe a little more.
It might make some noises as it comes out, okay?
(laughing) That's always my favorite part.
Here it goes going in, going in.
Yeah, and I know it's not smell of vision but it smells like coconuts.
I've tried to make this recipe with coconut conditioner and it smells delicious my favorite.
But you can also use a strawberry, that smells really nice too.
And again, all materials were purchased at the store where everything costs a dollar, and you can just go ahead and buy it there or use what you have at home.
Now here's the fun part of this recipe.
You could mix it with the spoon and you might have to, but I like to get messy.
And that's my parents love Ms. Lara huh.
I always liked clean and proper children, never messy.
That's not true.
Always the opposite.
We get messy in here, and this is actually part of the process because if you've ever made cloud dough you know that it gets really sticky and messy at first.
And then it starts to come together, look at my hands.
Oh, it feels really nice though between your hands.
And then you're going to squish it together even more and even more.
And as you squish it, it becomes one solid lump.
Here it goes, it starting I can feel it pulling away from my hands.
And a little trick to get it off your hands is just use the bigger lump to get it off like this, but you're gonna get messy.
And I love mess.
Even when I was little, I used to love painting everywhere, even in places I wasn't supposed to, which was not so much fun but I've always been messy.
Are you the same way?
All right, here it goes one big lump.
Come off my fingers join the group.
Part of your cloud dough family, here it is one giant cloud dough lump like this.
And then what you're going to do of course, is you're going to add whatever you'd like, but I suggest sprinkles.
Because it's fun to have cloud dough, but it's even more fun if it's colorful like a donut.
So here are my rainbow sprinkles, I'm gonna add them in.
Here we go, open up sprinkles.
And ooh, did I have too many?
Maybe a bit more, just like that.
Okay.
And then you get to mix it all in.
Now remember boys and girls, this cloud dough is for playing not for eating.
If you wanna make your own donuts I'm sure that you could find a recipe online.
And I don't think that dogs should eat donut.
So maybe instead of making donuts if you have a pet at home, you can make them a little treat with the recipe you find.
Okay, I think of course, more sprinkles, more sprinkles, more sprinkles.
There we go.
And mixing them all up.
Again, part of the experience is following a recipe, getting your hands dirty and making it your own.
So here's what you're gonna end up with.
Just some kind of cloud dough that I'll add my other cloud dough to and make one big lump.
Look at that, ooh fun.
Now we get to do some fun stuff.
We get to make a donut.
So to make your donuts (laughing) first, you try not to be so messy like me.
Is you take a little lump just like this, and you kind of roll it up in between your hands like this.
Ooh, let's see.
I smell like coconut.
I've never had a doughnut that smells like coconut.
And then you put it down like this, like that.
I don't know if you can see it, and then you're gonna make a little hole in the middle, just kind of poke it through and shape it around.
And flatten it if you want, and you made your donut.
You can see it right there.
How many should we make?
Let's make one more just to show you.
Again, lump it, roll it, make it into a ball like this, place it down.
You can flatten it a little bit.
And you're gonna take your poker finger that's nice and dirty from the cloud dough, go in the middle and make it circle around.
And there you go, another donut.
This is definitely making me wanna eat donuts.
Did you know that donuts are not baked they're fried traditionally?
So we can't put them in our oven.
We can make a pilaf grayer.
Although I guess I've had baked donuts too, they're healthier.
One more.
All right, flatten it out.
And now we've made some donuts.
Now you can make as many or as little as you want, pretend to feed them to your dog friend, act out the story.
I also have another activity that you can do in case you don't wanna get so messy because I get it.
Some people don't like to be messy.
And my daughter's like that.
She does not like to be messy like this.
I'm always giving her a hard time.
We can actually make donuts out of cardboard, that's right.
Look, I made a donut here that you can use for your dramatic play.
Now for this you're going to need some cardboard, some scissors, glue and paper.
So first thing I'm gonna do is I'm gonna cut out a circle from my donut.
So let's get that going.
Cardboard can be a little bit hard to cut out, but you don't wanna use paper because paper is not as durable.
Cardboard will sustain play so you can use it multiple times.
I'm gonna cut out a circle just like I did here.
Here we go.
Messy hands and all.
Oop, I will pick that up later.
We do not litter.
And then I'm gonna kind of fold it in half, or kind of punched through and get a little hole going, come on, come on.
Now again, you're gonna need a parent's help to get through that, you can see how hard it was for Ms. Lara.
And circle it around like this and a cardboard donut.
Next, you're going to need your paper.
Now I'm choosing to make some pink frosting on my donut.
Is that your favorite?
Do you like pink frosting, or maybe you just like sprinkles?
Maybe you don't like donuts.
I've never been a person who doesn't like donuts, but that might be you.
Then we're going to again, cut the middle out.
I wonder why donuts don't have a middle.
Most of them don't have, I wonder why.
And then you're going to glue on your frosting, I have some blue right here.
And around it goes, and then you guessed it.
What do I like to add?
To donuts as in life better with sprinkles.
So I'm going to put some glue right on top of my donut like this, and then we're going to add some sprinkles.
I didn't wanna do this over somewhere where you can get a little bit messy.
I have my little pan here.
And I have my cardboard donut.
And then you can pretend to make a donut shop, which is what we're going to do next boys and girls.
I have a little menu right here, and you can actually pretend that you're charging for your donuts.
So let's do that before we say goodbye.
So I wrote the word menu right here, M-E-N-U menu.
So when people come into your donut shop they can actually ask for what you have.
So the first thing I'm gonna make is, should I be silly or should I be serious?
I always have to answer that question.
And I always go with silly.
I'm gonna make a donut of my choice.
I think my donut is going to have ooh, shooting stars on top like that.
Ooh, a shooting star donut.
Maybe I'll put it like that.
It's my specialty.
And then we have to put a price on there.
How much should I charge for my shooting star donut?
$100, everyone will buy it.
This is a symbol for dollar.
I'm gonna put a one, a zero and a zero.
You can see parents how this ties in math, it's gonna tie in literacy because you're writing, drawing is a form of writing when you're four.
Let's do another specialty donut.
How about chocolate ooey gooey donut with lots of chocolate chips.
Maybe I'll attract a mouse to eat it.
Ooh the chocolate's gonna ooze down the bottom.
It's gonna be so chocolaty.
How much should I charge for this one?
A million dollars.
Million dollars?
Okay, maybe not, maybe just a dollar.
So I'll put the, maybe $2.
I don't want it to be too inexpensive.
Oh, number two.
All right, there's my menu.
Which one would you eat boys and girls?
(laughing) I hope that you try this activity at home, and if you do don't forget to send me a little note or a picture.
I think my friends will put the address down below.
All right, time for her goodbye letter song.
And of course I'm all messy, just like you if you tried this activity, so let's do it together.
