Welcome back to our pre-K and TK learning space.
I'm your teacher today, Mrs. Lara.
Hello.
I'd love for you to tell me your name.
Are you ready?
Say it as loud as you can wherever you are.
Here you go.
Oh, I heard it way over here.
Let me see if I can guess your special letter.
Is it the letter T?
T that says T for turtle.
Yes?
No?
Well if that's not your special letter, don't worry.
I'll bring another friend with another letter that will hopefully be your special letter.
Today is day three of the five days that we're going to be together this week.
So let me add a magnet to my board.
See one, two, three.
One on top and two on the bottom.
One and two makes three.
Now this week we're learning about all things spooky.
We talked about a little old lady who was not scared of anything, and even some creepy carrots.
And we're going to continue that theme with some more spooky books.
So I hope that you stick around.
Of course, I also have a song for us that we're going to be learning all week long about feelings.
So let me get my pumpkins out.
And you can help me sing along.
Remember, some of our pumpkin's feel loved, some feel sad.
And if you don't have pumpkins like I do, you can actually use your thumbs and then use your face to make the emotion.
Are you ready to sing?
It goes like this.

All right.
So remember we're going to be singing that song all week long.
So you'll have lots of chances to sing with me.
Right now, we're going to try to guess our clue.
(bell rings) And see what Miss Maria left for us to figure out.
Now remember, you already know that we start at the left and end at the right.
But today we're going to talk about tracking the words that you read.
When you track something, you actually use your pointer finger, which is the finger right next to your thumb.
And you point to the words as you read.
And I know what you're thinking, Mrs. Lara, what do I do when I get to the end?
You do what's called a return sweep.
You start at the left again.
So practice with me.
Get to the end, get to the end.
Return sweep.
One more time.
To the end, to the end.
Return sweep.
So your homework is to practice doing that with books, even if you can't read the words.
But I can read the words for us today.
So let me get my pointer and we'll get started.
It says, dear, Mrs. Lara.
Do you remember the story of the old lady who swallowed some leaves?
I do, she swallowed some leaves and a pumpkin I think even.
And she even made a scarecrow at the very end, didn't she?
Well, I heard there was another old woman who swallowed a bat.
Bat!
A bat!
Oh no, imagine that, swallowing a bat.
Oh let's see if the book Miss Maria left has a bat in it.
And if the old woman is going to swallow it.
I'm a little bit scared to find out.
Yes, it's called "There was an Old Woman who Swallowed a Bat."
And look at that face that the bat's making.
Making a face like our jack-o-lantern surprised and maybe a little scared.
The old woman has a very large dress that she's going to fit lots of things that she's gonna swallow into.
So let's read our story.
It is by Lucille Colandro, and that's the author who writes the words.
Illustrated by Jared Lee, who drew the pictures.
There was an old lady who swallowed a bat.
Here we go.
There was an old lady who swallowed a bat.
I don't know why she swallowed a bat.
Imagine that.
So there she is swallowing the bat.
Look, there's a jack-o-lantern looking at her with the side eye like, what are you doing lady?
We don't eat bats around here.
There was an old lady who swallowed an owl.
My oh my, she started to howl.
Let's let out a howl together.
Ready?
(howls) There she is, letting out her howl.
And the frog's looking at her.
Kind of solved the mystery of why she would do that.
That poor owl was doing nothing wrong.
She swallowed the owl to shush the bat.
I don't know why she swallowed a bat.
Imagine that.
Now what is she going to eat next?
Do you see it right here?
It's something with a tail, and you might have it as a pet, and it rhymes with bat.
Hm.
There was an old lady who swallowed a cat.
What do you think?
Now she's so fat.
If I were to eat a bat and an owl and a cat, I think I would be that way too.
She swallowed the cat to chase the owl.
She swallowed the owl to shush the bat.
I don't know why she swallowed a bat.
Imagine that.
There was an old lady who swallowed a ghost.
What do you think?
She liked it the most.
There she is with the ghost trying to make a spooky face.
Like don't eat me old lady.
She swallowed the ghost to catch the cat.
She swallowed the cat to chase the owl.
She swallowed the owl to shush the bat.
I don't know why she swallowed a bat.
Imagine that.
There was an old lady who swallowed a goblin.
Oh my.
It made her so dizzy, she started to spin.
Look at there, she is spinning around.
And I don't know if you can tell she actually spun so hard that she lost a shoe.
But her glasses stayed on her head, I want to know what she uses.
She swallowed the goblin to scare the ghost.
She swallowed the ghost to catch the cat.
She swallowed the cat to chase the owl.
She swallowed the owl to shush the bat.
I don't know why she swallowed a bat.
Imagine that.
She's still hungry.
Can you see what she's going to eat here?
There was an old lady who swallowed some bones.
I hope she doesn't choke.
There were so many, she started to groan.
Look at her groaning.
She even has stars around her, probably because she's nauseous.
That's a feeling you get when you're dizzy and your stomach hurts.
She swallowed the bones to rattle the goblin.
She swallowed the goblin to scare the ghost.
She swallowed the ghost to catch the cat.
She swallowed the cat to chase the owl, and she swallowed the owl to shush the bat.
I don't know why she swallowed a bat.
Imagine that.
There was an old lady who swallowed a wizard.
To cast a spell so she could yell.
What is she gonna yell?
Trick or treat.
Look, there she's letting out all the things she ate.
The bones, the cat, the owl, the goblin, the ghost.
All they say trick or treat.
The end.
So what did you think?
Do you like this story?
Give me a thumbs up if you liked it.
Or was it not your favorite?
Maybe you don't like to see stories of people swallowing bones, it might make you nervous, huh?
You can give me a thumbs down if it wasn't.
But if you like the story, the author has tons more books about swallowing bats and different things like the leaf one we read.
So check them out in your local library.
Right now, we're going to practice a foundational skill, which is sequencing the story.
So we're going to look on my board here, and we're going to try to remember the order that the old lady ate things in.
So let's see if you can remember.
What was the very first thing that the old lady ate?
She ate a bat.
So here's our bat, special letter B. I'm going to put her in there.
Sorry bat.
You're just too delicious.
I'm gonna eat you bat.
And then what did she eat after?
Oh, if you can't seem to remember, you can always go back and check in the text.
And I do that sometimes.
I go back and look.
Oh, there it is.
The owl.
The owl.
Oh, there's the owl looking spooky.
Who ate the owl?
The old lady.
And after the owl she ate the cat.
So here's the cat.
Cat.
Cat.
Right by there.
And then she ate the bat, the owl, and the cat who doesn't want to stay up.
And what did she eat next?
She ate the ghost.
So let's put the ghost right in the old lady.
Now that's quite a thing to do to eat a ghost, isn't it?
Because they're transparent and invisible.
You can't really eat them.
Let's put them right here.
She ate the ghost and then she ate another thing that starts with g. The goblin.
So here is the goblin.
Oh, she put the goblin to scare the ghost.
And then she ate some bones.
And last, to cast a spell so she could yell, she ate a wizard.
And then she screamed or yelled trick or treat.
So in order for us to kind of go along with the book and practice some of our skills, I have a fun art activity that you can do at home.
So let me walk over to our project place and I'll explain how it connects to our text.
So, I was thinking, what could we do here at our project place that would be fun?
And would remind me of the story that I read, The old lady who swallowed a bat.
And I thought, oh, bat craft, that would be fun.
Now to make this a learning activity, what you would need to do is do the process art first, which is of course learning.
But to make it literacy based, you would need to have some writing connected to it or some retelling.
So I'll show you what to do at the end.
All right, for this activity, you're going to need some white paint, black paper, some white paper, scissors, yellow paper, tape, and a marker.
Seems like a lot of things, but it's not too many.
Let me show you what the first thing that we're going to do.
We're going to make some bat silhouette art.
A silhouette is just the outline of something.
So the first thing we're going to need to do is cut out a bat shape.
So I'll show you what we'll do with that.
So to cut our bat shape, I'm going to do it in marker.
So you can do it along with me at home.
What you'll do is you'll draw maybe a little.
Let's see a body.
And then you're going to want to draw some wings.
Let me do it this way, so I can see what I drew here.
Now you can do it however you want.
Yours does not have to look like mine.
So this is what I have so far.
And see, I drew kind of like a U shaped at the bottom and a wing and some ears.
So let's see.
Now I'm going to draw the other wing.
And then we're going to connect them right here.
And if it doesn't come out perfect, because look, I made a mistake right here.
You don't need to worry about it because you're going to cut it out anyway.
So next you're going to take your scissors and start cutting.
And of course, I always tell you, cutting is learning in and of itself.
When you're a grownup, you forget when you learned to cut with scissors, but you had to learn it somehow.
And this one, this shape has a lot of curbs, so it's great for practice.
You're going to go around, around.
Cut, cut, cut, cut, cut.
And look, see it's not perfect.
I'm telling you.
Perfect is boring anyway.
So just try your best.
And if you can't get this cutout, you can have a grownup help you.
They can at least start it for you until you get it done.
Gotta cut his ears out.
Do you remember that book we read about bats?
"Stellaluna."
That had so many bat facts in it.
And that's in one of my recommended books today.
So I'll remind you that we write that story again.
So here's what our bat shape is looking like.
So the next thing that we're going to do is we're going to take our bat shape and we're going to tape it to a piece of black paper like this.
So let me get some tape here.
And I'm going to tape the underside by folding up the tape like this.
So see I kind of made it into a little tooth.
Then I'm going to put it underneath like this.
I'm going to add some to the wings.
And since I made some more bat shapes earlier, I might include those as well.
So let me put that here, at the bottom.
And I might take a smaller one, put it up here.
So you can make as many bats as you'd like.
And then I'll show you what we're going to do.
There's my two book tape.
I'm just going to tape down the wings now, 'cause we don't want it to lift up.
This activity is really fun to do, just as a fun thing to do with your family, that you can then display.
But the important thing is for you to be able to talk about why you're doing it.
So you're learning about bats, and then you can retell the story of the old lady who actually ate a bat.
And what I would do is attach some writing to the bottom, a piece of paper, maybe write the word bat.
Okay so, to make our silhouette, we're going to take some white paint, and we're going to put it on our plate like this.
And I thought, well, we can use an ordinary paintbrush, of course, but, wouldn't it be fun if I went to the place where everything costs a dollar and look for something else to paint with.
So I have a feather duster here.
And yes, you can reuse it.
Just need to wash the bottom.
So I'm going to take my big feather duster and dip it in some paint.
And then I'm going to paint on top of my bats.
Whoa, look at that.
This is really fun to do, isn't it?
I hope it's as fun to watch as it is to do.
And I hope that you try it yourself.
You could also do marble painting with this, sponge painting, but look at how neat it is to be able to paint with a different tool.
Let me get a bit more paint here.
And I'll show you, we'll add our moon, because it's going to be a spooky night sky.
Okay, there's a bit more paint.
There we go.
You know what's funny is I don't like to dust normally, but if all dusting was just like this, I think I would do it all the time.
There it is.
Okay.
Now comes the fun part, because I'm going to show you what it looks like when I lift up my bats.
I'm going to put our tool down.
This is what it's going to look like.
See.
Doesn't that look neat?
It has a different texture than an ordinary paint brush.
Now I'm going to pull up my bats.
And you're going to see hopefully a good bat silhouette.
There it is.
Ooh, that looks super cool, look at that.
Now to finish it off, what we're going to do is we're going to add a moon to the corner.
What shape moon shall I use?
Shall I do a crescent moon, or shall I do an oval moon or a circle moon?
I think I'll do a full moon, which is a full circle.
Let me cut that out.
Here it is.
You start at one end, and go all the way around.
All the way around, all the way around.
You have to remember to connect it.
There it is.
I'm just going to take mine down here.
Right at the corner.
And then I'll show you the finished product here.
What do you think?
Do you like that?
They make the silhouette art.
Do you see the form of the bat?
Now you can do this with lots of different colors.
So I had some white paper here, you can use a bat.
And you can do it with orange paint, or you can do it with green paint, and do all kinds of shapes.
You can even make your special letter.
So I hope that you try this at home.
Right now, I'm going to show you a few of my recommended books, and I might even show you some pictures inside.
Put my things away.
My large feather duster.
So weird when they ask me, what did you do today?
Painted with the feather duster, of course.
So I wanted to show you this book that we've already read.
So if you want to take a look at it, I haven't made a puppet story about this one.
So go back and check "Stellaluna."
Do you remember?
It was about a little bat who lost its way and ended up in a nest full of birds.
Whoa, and at the very end, it found its bat mom.
Here it is.
So it was a happy ending.
And I know that this one is available at our local library.
So what I wanted to show you was that there's some bat facts at the very back of the book called bat notes, that allows you to compare how human hands look and bat wings, and what predators bats have or what eats them.
Really not old ladies, but there is something that eats them.
So you're gonna have to check out this book and let me know.
There's also another recommended book that I wanted to share with you.
This one's called "When I'm Feeling Scared."
Now around this time, I told you, October is kind of a spookier month.
So you might see things in stores that might leave you a little fearful, little frightened.
So this is the story of a little bunny, and what the bunny does when he feels scared.
I'll read you the first part.
Says, "When I feel scared, my heart beats so loud and fast "I feel like it's going to burst out of my chest."
Look at that.
And so it goes through different techniques and strategies that children can use when they feel scared.
He's even scared of spiders.
I have a friend who's very scared of spiders.
He asked for help right here.
So check out this book as well.
Hopefully it's available at your local library.
And this is actually a series.
When I'm feeling scared, when I'm feeling sad.
So hopefully you find one in the series.
