Welcome back to our learning space.
My name is Ms. Lara.
Can you tell me your name?
Oh boy.
I heard some of you say it.
Welcome back to Wednesdays learning.
So today, me and my farm friend, the pig, are getting ready to sing our good morning song.
So wipe the sleep off your face and sing with me.
Ready?
Here we go.
♪ Good morning ♪ ♪ Good morning ♪ ♪ It's a sunshine kind of day ♪ ♪ Come join, Miss Laura ♪ ♪ for some learning and some play ♪ ♪ While we sing this song ♪ Of course we will.
♪ make our brains strong ♪ Like super strong.
♪ So come along ♪ Yes, come on friends.
♪ For some learning and some play ♪ All right, I'm gonna put my pig friend away.
He's gonna go right here.
Of course, I picked a pig because this week we're learning about Mrs. Wishy Washy, who lived on a farm and liked to keep things very, very clean.
And he remember the cow, the horse and the sheep loved the mud and Mrs. Wishy Washy cleaned them all only for them to get dirty again.
If you missed the story, go back to Monday's episode.
That's where you'll find the video story that you can watch.
So let's check our plan and see what we're gonna do with our book today.
So we're gonna do our emotional check-in first.
Remember, it's so important to check-in with your feelings, not just once but throughout the day, then our weekly investigation.
So yesterday I showed you how to make super sticky mud that you can actually taste.
I hope some of you tasted it because it was a trick.
It was not very good, was it?
It just smells like chocolate.
So we're going to be using that same mud in finding some letters and beginning sounds.
And then, we're going to end our learning with our goodbye song or a goodbye squeeze, depending on the time.
Sound like a plan?
Okay.
If you have your pencil and paper out, we're going to do some journaling.
Now last week I introduced to you two journaling, which was just writing down your feelings and thoughts about something.
Now, even if you don't know how to write, you can still draw pictures to show and express how you feel inside.
So today I'm thinking about the book, "Mrs. Wishy Washy."
I've been reading that book a lot.
And I'm thinking about how Mrs. Wishy Washy might've felt when all the animals got dirty again, after she spent so much time cleaning them.
What do you think?
Yeah, I think she felt pretty sad too.
That's what I'm going to draw.
I'm gonna draw a sad Mrs. Wishy Washy.
Now, have you ever been in a situation where you worked really hard on something?
Maybe you're making a project or are you trying to glue something together?
Or if you're doing Mrs. Reed Right's Art class, maybe you're trying to paint something and you make a wrong stroke.
How do you feel when things don't go your way?
Yeah.
I feel sad too.
Oops.
I drew her happy.
Let's see sad goes like this.
It's like a rainbow goes down.
Maybe she's doing a cheer up and we're going to show the mud all through here.
And she's thinking about how she wants it clean.
Oh no, poor Mrs. Wishy Washy feeling so bad.
Now, what can she do if she's sad?
Hmm.
Maybe she can take belly breaths or tell a good joke?
Let's see.
I'm gonna write, maybe somebody is gonna see something funny to her over here.
Say, "Ha ha ha ha."
And get her really laughing and excited again.
Okay, since we're journaling and some of you might feel sad sometimes, I'll show you how to write the word "sad" in your journal.
You ready?
It goes like this.
Sssssss "S" Sssss ah, ah.
And actually, I'm gonna use uppercase because in pre-school that's mainly what we use.
Sa.
And the ending sound is d, d, d. D, that's right.
Now, if you don't know how to write the whole word you can just write the beginning sound.
In pre-school that's what we like to do.
Teach the beginning sound.
I look forward to seeing what your drawings were today.
I hope you're not feeling sad like Mrs. Wishy Washy.
Okay.
Let me show you where our letter is gonna give us a clue about what we're going to learn about.
So here's our letter clue for the day.
Big line down, little curve and little curve.
What letter have I made?
The letter B.
That's right.
B for beginning sound.
So we're gonna uncover some of the beginning sounds of the characters and things in our story.
So remember, beginning sounds or the first sound that you hear in a word also called special letter.
My special letter is L for Lara.
What's your special letter?
So let's go through and I'll name each picture.
And then we'll act ask what's the beginning sound.
So first one, Ms. Wishy Washy, Wishy Washy.
mud, horse, cow, and tub, all things and characters from the story.
Let's think about wishy washy.
What's the beginning sound that you hear?
Wa, wishy washy.
Ooh.
Did you say W?
That's correct.
It's W. The W makes the "wa" sound.
Let's go through the mud.
Mmud.
What's the first sound you hear mmud?
Let's see.
M, that's right.
The letter M for mud.
Let's go to the next one.
Horse.
Horse.
Say it really slow in your mouth, horse.
H, that's correct.
This is what the H looks like.
Ta-da.
Let's do one more.
Tub.
t, t, t, t, tub, t. Yes, its a T. T for tub.
Last one.
Cow, c, c, cow.
Hm.
C for cow.
Now, the cow could have also been the letter K, but because I've been reading a long time I know that it's a C. Okay, let's go to our activity place.
And we'll do a beginning sound activity.
that's gonna help you practice your beginning sounds.
For this activity you're going to need the mud.
You can use real mud by mixing dirt and water together or using the flour cocoa powder mixture that I showed you from yesterday's episode.
You're going to need some letters.
Now I use these wood letters that can be washed.
But those plastic letters that you get at the place where everything's a dollar would have worked just fine in here.
You can also cut up some letters and laminate them or put them in a Ziploc bag, so they won't get really messy with the mudding.
You can wash them.
You're going to need some soapy water, if you wanna wash your letters.
Today, we're just gonna be pulling them out.
So we're not going to need that.
Okay, so I have some letters here.
I'm gonna drop into our mud.
Let's see what letter is this, it's the letter A.
In goes the A.
In goes the X.
Let's see the B for beginning.
The M. Let's do a P, an H, an L, and a D. Now you have to kind of get your fingers in them and really bury them in the mud like this.
I'm gonna show you.
Good closeup of how sticky that mud is.
Okay, once you bury some of your letters, I want you to think about something that starts with that letter when we take it out of the mud.
Just like the animals in our story, huh?
They got really muddy.
There are muddy mess.
So let me pull my first letter out.
Let's see, I'm uncovering it.
Oh, well, wouldn't you know, it's my special letter, the letter L. So what's something that starts with L besides Lara, me special letter.
Let's see.
L, is there anything in your house that starts with the letter L, like a luck?
Or a load of a laundry?
What else might start with an L?
Ooh, a light.
Lots of things start with the letter L. Now, if you're not at a place where you know the beginning sounds of things, you can actually do a letter sorting activity with this.
So you can actually pull letters and sort them by, if they have curves, if they have lines.
You can do uppercase, lowercase, or at the very beginning, you can put letters and numbers in here and see if your child, or you can recognize the difference.
All right, let's do another one.
This one looks super muddy (chuckles).
Let's see.
It's the letter M. M, what sound does M make?
Mm, mm.
Mm, mm.
What's something in your house that starts with the letter M?
hm.
Microwave.
Microwave starts with M, doesn't it?
How about um monster?
Oh, hopefully you don't have a monster in your closet.
No, those aren't real.
All right.
Let's put that one away.
Let's do a couple more.
Let's see.
The letter P. This one has a hole in it and where the mud really got through.
Now, it's hard for you to see those letters at home but the letter P looks like this.
Got the letter P and my hands are super sticky with mud and yours will be too.
The letter P. What's something that starts with the letter P in your house?
How about a pattern?
Do you know what a pattern is?
Something that repeats over and over again.
Maybe you're lucky and you have a pie, yummy, in your house.
Or let's see a pooch, like a dog?
You can have lots of those things.
Let's do one more before we say goodbye.
Ooh, I picked the letter B.
This one has two curves.
So it has two holes in the middle here.
It is very muddy.
So when you do this activity, make sure you do it in a place where you don't mind getting sticky and dirty.
Letter B, B. I can think of a sport that has the letter B.
Letter B, basketball?
How about baseball?
Do any of you will play basketball or baseball?
Both of those sports start with the letter B.
So it was fun digging for letters with you and thinking through the beginning sound.
Now, I just want to remind you parents that these kinds of activities, where you make playful learning activities with letters are so fun to teaching children more so than a flash cards, or just kind of drill and kill activities that you might be seeing sold at stores.
Try making this instead.
Okay.
It looks like we have just enough time to sing our goodbye song.
I'm gonna tell you what we're going to do tomorrow.
So tomorrow we're actually gonna make floating chalk art and we're going to do it with our beginning sound.
So super fun.
Let's see.
I don't have time to turn it over.
So we'll just sing our song.

Don't forget to bring your pencil and paper so that we can journal our feelings in the morning.
We can maybe do the book or just how we're feeling throughout the day.
And of course, we'll start our day with a good morning song.
Okay, we'll see you then boys and girls, a very muddy goodbye.
See you later.
