Welcome back to our learning space.
My name is Ms. Lara.
Can you tell me your name?
I'm so excited that you made it back today.
Today is Tuesday and we're learning about the book, "This is the Nest That Robin Built," and all about birds.
And I have my bird friend here to sing our "Good Morning Song."
So wipe the sleep from your eyes and let's get singing, ready?

♪ For some and learning and some play ♪ Okay, I'm gonna put my bird friend back in his nest and we'll go through our plan for the day.
So we did our emotional check-in with a song or a poem today.
We're talking about disagreements.
Now, disagreements are when you don't get along with someone or you think something is some way, and someone else thinks it's another way.
It might make you angry.
Angry is a very strong feeling that you feel in your body.
So, we're gonna learn about two little birds that disagree all the time.
Maybe you'll relate to them.
And then we're gonna do our weekly investigation.
Now, yesterday, we made some binoculars.
Have you been using them to go outside and explore the world around you?
Did you see any birds?
Well, today we're going to be making a nest using natural materials like branches and leaves.
It's gonna be a lot of fun.
And we'll sing our "Goodbye Song," and Ms. Lara will give you a goodbye smooch (lips smacking) and send you off to enjoy the rest of your day.
Sound like a good plan?
Okay, so let's get started with our poem or song about two little birds that just disagree.
And maybe you're like that with somebody in your family, maybe a little brother or big brother or sister, and you just can't agree and come to terms with anything.
So, let's figure out what these two little birds are gonna do.
So get your birds out.
They're gonna have their beaks, here we go.

When one would smile, the other would frown.
When one said hot, the other said cold.
When one said young, the other said old.
When one said right, the other said wrong.
When one said short, the other said long.
Two little birds sitting in a tree.
Two little birds, will they ever agree?
Now, yesterday, we talked about what to do when you have a disagreement, and I mentioned maybe talking it out.
But really, when you have a disagreement, you have to talk and involve the other person.
So, I'm hoping that this opens up a conversation that you can have with your family about what to do when you're not getting along.
Okay, so now we're gonna switch gears and I'm gonna show you my letter.
And I'm gonna give you a clue about the video and story we're gonna watch next.

The letter H, that's right.
H is for house, and for a bird, their house is a nest.

♪ Tweet tweet ♪ ♪ Tweet tweet ♪ Hello, explorers, what do you see through my binoculars?
It's a nest, but do you know why birds build nests?
Let's find out.
Birds are what are called oviparous.
That means they lay eggs to make other birds.
Can you say that word?
Oviparous.
Oviparous.
A bird builds a nest to keep their eggs and babies safe from the weather and so they're not attacked by other animals.
- [Fox] Hello.
- [Ms. Lara] You may have seen a bird nest on a tree.
But did you know, they can make their nests in lots of places?
In a traffic light, on a car tire, even in an old shoe.
Birds will make their nest anywhere, as long as it keeps their eggs and baby safe.
So what do birds build their nests out of?
Some birds like to build their nest out of natural things like grass and leaves and mud, and some use plastic, human hair, yarn, really anything soft that they can find.
Bird nests come in different shapes and sizes, too.
Have you ever seen a nest like this one made by a weaver bird?
Or a bald eagle nest large enough to fit a human inside?
Or maybe you've seen a tiny hummingbird nest no bigger than your thumb.
It takes birds a long time to build their nests.
If you see a bird nest, make sure to keep it safe by leaving it exactly where it's at.
So I hope you enjoyed learning a little bit about nests.
Don't forget that you can check out books on the Sora app or in a library.
I hear that they're opening back up.
So, we're here at the project place and we're going to make a nest of our own using natural materials.
So, let's review our materials list.
Here we go.
We're going to need some branches, some leaves, yarn, really anything that you can find around your house that you might use to build a nest.
Now, I wanted to tell you about the branches.
Now, last night when I was making this, I realized that the best branches are those that are kind of green.
You don't want the brittle branches like this because they're very hard to bend.
So, I freshly picked these branches.
Now, do you remember in the video, it talked about how the nest is a home for the bird and it keeps things safe for when they have their eggs and their little baby birds.
It keeps them safe from the weather and from predators, and sometimes even from other birds that like to steal eggs.
So what I'm doing is I'm taking a branch that I put outside and now I wanna make a circle.
I'm making what's called a cup nest.
So, I'm making a little nest that looks like a cup.
Now, last night I had a little trouble keeping this together, so I used a piece of yarn to kind of make it into a circle, more like an oval, huh?
And I've kind of tied it up.
Now, can you imagine how difficult it is for a bird to make a nest?
They don't have hands like ours, do they?
They just have a beak and they're using found items to go around.
So, this process takes a little while and don't get discouraged if it keeps coming apart, because that's what happened to me.
I imagined that I was building a little nest for my little baby eggs and that they were counting on me, so I kept going.
So, I'm just gonna tie this one up so you can see.
Woo, quite a process.
So here's my base, and this is what I'm gonna use to wrap everything around.
Now, last night I started one and I started adding more branches to it, you see?
Now, if I was going to make this a nest, I would put it on top of something and I might add some leaves to kind of make it into a little cup form like this.
I thought, oh, it looks like a little blanket for my little eggs, see?
And then I took some more branches and I just started weaving them in and out of the other thicker branch that I put down earlier.
Now, birds use a combination of different things, like I said, natural materials and found objects.
They also use their saliva to kind of hold things together, because you can see you really need something like glue or mud to bind everything.
All right, now I'm going to pretend that this is my little bird beak and I'm gonna grab some found objects.
Let's see, I'm gonna grab, ooh, some fabric.
Just happened to float it around.
And then I'm gonna start wrapping it around like this to make my nest.
And birds can actually use human hair, too, to build a nest.
Isn't that interesting?
I don't know if I'd want my hair to be part of a nest.
Here goes a little more.
Now I'm gonna use a little piece of paper.
Now, let's say that you find a lot of materials that you wanna use to make a nest and you don't end up using all of them, make sure that you put them back because birds love to hunt for materials to use.
So here's some more, I'm just kind of putting it around, gonna grab some more, maybe some more yarn.
Ooh, here we go.
You'll wrap it around.
It's coming together.
I wonder what kind of bird would like this nest.
It's a little too big to be a hummingbird nest.
We had some leaves here to kind of blanket it down, maybe a few more branches.
Ooh, nice little cozy place.
So, weave some branches in and out.
Okay, it looks like it's coming together.
(chuckling) Looks a little messy, but that's how it is in nature.
It's not all clean and perfect.
So this is what my nest is turning out to be, just a little spot, a little cozy soft area where a bird might put its eggs and keep them safe.
Now I look forward to seeing what your nests look like.
Remember, if you send in a picture or a letter here at the station and include your address, our friends here at PBS give you these fun activity books and they have, ooh, different things, like this one's "Arthur."
That's "Arthur," that's pretty cool.
And they have a "Super Why" book and a "Humpty Dumpty" book.
So, I'd love to be able to give those to you.
Hey, looks like our time together here is almost up.
Let me tell you what we're gonna do tomorrow.
Tomorrow, we're gonna work on beginning sounds.
We're gonna use the characters in our story, "This is the Nest That the Robin Built" and match the beginning sounds.
And then I'm gonna show you a way that we're gonna feed some birds some beginning sounds, and it's a little bit messy.
You know I love to get messy here.
It involves noodles and they're gonna be our worms, and we're gonna take them and feed them to the right bird.
Oof, I don't know if I wanna do that.
I hope you come back tomorrow, boys and girls.
