I'm Darrin Thomas, a board member and Vice President of Outreach for the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra, which is charged with finding opportunities to expose our orchestra (young child vocalizes) to all segments of our population.

But in light of the tragic events this past week, we felt compelled to change the focus of tonight's program.

As many of us search for answers to the tragedy suffered by our nation, (child cries out) the beauty of tonight's program is that it allows us to focus on the very good of our nation, of which our enemies find disdainful.

While understanding that music is the universal language of mankind, it is our hope that you would find resolve in the message of our music, that the God that we serve will sustain us, and our diversity as a nation and a community is a strength that no enemy can destroy.

We thank you for your presence tonight.

We pray that God continues to bless you and may he continue to bless our nation.

(congregation claps) - It is with much joy in the Lord that I greet you in the precious name of Jesus, our blessed redeemer.

During my 30 years in pastoral ministry at Brookland, we have known many significant occasions.

However, none is more noteworthy and praiseworthy than this day when we welcome you to this concert by the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra, the Brookland Baptist Church Choirs, and the First Baptist Church Choir, pastored by my friend and brother beloved, the Reverend Samuel Lewis.

America is experiencing traumatic suffering, agonizing grief, and a piercing pain unlike any it has seen in recent times.

(small child vocalizes) We're all wrestling with the inevitable and elusive why of Tuesday's violent and vicious attack on America.

Some are feeling distressed, others depressed, while a number are bordering despair.

We are all gravely moved by the devastation in this land and the hundreds of innocent lives that have been claimed as a result of the attack on America.

But praise be unto God.

He has ordained and appointed this hour for us to come together across racial and church denominational lines for a blessed moment of inspirational music to comfort and lift us who are being so greatly challenged.

What a mighty God we serve.

- Amen.

- The Psalmist said in 122, number one, "I was glad when they said unto me, 'Let us go into the house of the Lord.'"

It is our prayer that when we shall have left this place, we will say that it was good for us to have been here.

And now if you will, let us bow our heads in prayer.

Dear God of grace, glory, and truth in whom we live and move and have our beings, we acknowledge your creative genius of this creative order.

We acknowledge you as sovereign Lord and supreme ruler of this universe.

We so acknowledge because we, in our mortality, find ourselves challenged by the circumstances we face in this nation.

We don't understand the mystery of your handiwork, why things are as they are, why so many innocent lives have been claimed, but we are trusting believers.

We believe yet in your goodness, your grace, and your mercy.

So we ask you right now to bless us with your anointing favor.

Presence yourself among us with such strength and might that we might be lifted and encouraged and empowered by the songs that are sung, the music that is shared.

We give you glory and honor and pledge ourselves anew to you in trust and faith.

We will let nothing separate us from the love you've given us in Jesus Christ, our Lord.

In the glorious and victorious name of Jesus, we pray, amen, and thank God.

When I was asked to be a sponsor of this event, I was touched by the idea of unity and the coming together of a community and a state.

In these times of indelible impressions, however, the request also conjures up an indelible memory of my youth when my love of music and the organized church collided.

At the age of 16, I was possessed of a moderately accomplished piano repertoire and it was determined that I should also give a solo piano recital.

This was the first significant public performance of accomplishment of my life and I have never since that day been as nervous as I was the day of this recital.

The only venue in Little Lake City, which is where I'm from, with the facilities and the instrument to handle such an event was, of course, one of our churches, one of our big churches.

So in addition to needing flowers and punch for my event, I also needed ushers.

I asked four of my high school boyfriends.

(congregation laughs) Today, I might ask some of my girlfriends, but 30 years ago, it was your boyfriends.

And it was Ronnie, Dickie, Ronald, and Milford.

Milford was black, but my friend.

The day of the event, the church elders came to my house, to my home, and I was told if I had a black usher, there would be repercussions in the church and there would be no more public concerts held in the sanctuary.

I was 16, I was powerless, and I had three ushers.

Milford agreed to participate in this event tonight.

I found him, he was in Florida.

(congregation member laughs) (congregation applauds) (congregation applauds) His memory of our 29 year old event, as he pointed out, not 30, was as vivid as mine, but alas, the conditions of our air traffic service and the country being what it is, he was not able to be here, but his thoughts and prayers are with us.

But for this event of my youth, I might have dedicated my life to piano performance.

As y'all know, I did not, but spent many years working in the financial community in New York.

Today, my investment firm has offices in New York, and sadly, many associates and colleagues have perished at the hands of those who believe our differences are more important than humanity and those hate-filled hands which have brought us to this monumental pain because of our differences.

After the terrible, terrible events of Tuesday, I too come to this sanctuary seeking comfort and peace.

What counts now is not our differences, but that we are together as one.

I know I will leave here tonight, comforted by the beautiful music and fellowship, comforted by the fact that we are all Americans and will face whatever the future may bring together.

And finally, comforted by the personal reconciliation that comes from the knowledge that were I to perform at the piano today, I would have four ushers.

What a wonderful church and beautiful sanctuary and it's terrific to see a crowd almost as large as what happens on Sunday morning here at Brookland Baptist here tonight.

For those of you who have not been here, I am telling the truth.

Yesterday afternoon, I returned home from being out and had a phone message.

And the message was from a staff member who asked me to call a lady in Orangeburg whose son is still lost and who worked in the World Trade Center.

And I made that phone call, when I saw that pink slip, I thought, "Oh, this is gonna be incredibly tough to make this call."

And I called this wonderful lady who had lived in New York for most of her life and returned home to take care of her elderly mother who had been ill and returned 10 years ago to South Carolina and left her 30 year old, now 30 year old son in New York and she was incredibly proud of him.

And he had a job in the World Trade Center with a bond firm, I believe.

And she told me what any parent says, "You don't know how tough it is to lose a child."

And I thought as a father of kids, as we all are, "Gosh, no, she's right, how tough it would be to lose a child, and how tough it is to have the loss of your child played out on TV every night, those 5,000 or so that are missing in the World Trade Center bombings and those in Washington DC as well and how painful it must be to those parents of children and to those children of parents who are lost in this horrible tragedy, how tough it must be, the uncertainty, the prayers that they offer for their loved ones, the thoughts of what was said and what was not said before, in the moments before this tragedy occurred, the cell phone calls that we've all heard about from loved ones who were trapped in the World Trade Center.

And how her words rang so true and how hollow sometimes the words, "We will do everything we can to help," seem.

But I concluded after that discussion that yes, I think it does mean something for us to have services like this and for us to work together as a community, as an American community, to do something to show that we care and to show that indeed these people who suffer are part of our family.

(young child babbles) And we do that in a number of ways.

We do that in church gatherings like this.

We do that in Sunday morning church gatherings.

And I would bet, pastor, that this morning we had an incredible increase in the number of people that attended church.

I saw that in my own church today and I think that that probably played out all around the country, larger crowds gathering, using their church worship to make sense of something that frankly, you can't make sense of.

And part of why we are here tonight is to try to have a service of unity, but also to try to make sense of something that's so difficult and to celebrate the fact that, indeed, we are Americans and that we are lucky to live in a great state like South Carolina and a great country like the United States of America.

We have a number of ways of showing it.

Tonight is one of those ways.

And the other night, I had the pleasure of being a part of another way.

We have a new initiative called South Carolina Cares.

You may have heard about it.

And it's a way in which we can all be a part.

We all want to do something and we don't know what it is.

And we ask, we want to volunteer, and go to New York or Washington to help and we're all looking and searching for a way to be a part of something good from this terrible tragedy.

Let me tell you a story about South Carolina Cares.

The other night, I was answering the phone at one of the local television stations and the guy next to me hands me the phone and says, "This is a little eight year old girl who has taken 50 dollars from her piggy bank to give to the South Carolina Cares campaign."

What an incredible, moving story that a young child, eight years old, would understand what had happened and would fathom the importance of it, that they would reach into their very own piggy bank, to contribute 50 dollars that comes hard for a little eight year old.

And I thought, "Yes, that is someone who at eight years of age understands the importance of community and understands the importance of giving."

Tonight, we try to capture that same spirit of that little eight year old, and we try to help that poor woman in Orangeburg who's suffering and wondering about the fate of her son that she's so proud of.

And tonight, we gather as South Carolinians to try to find a way to see that we can be together, and work together, and show unity, and show our great love for this country of ours, and to give comfort to those who have suffered.

Thank you for being here and for showing your concern, and your care, and your sense of being a part of this community that we call South Carolina and this community that we call the United States of America.

And last but not least, we'd like to recognize the South Carolina Philharmonic Board and the Philharmonic staff.

(congregation applauds) Ladies and gentlemen, if I might say, the South Carolina Philharmonic Board has been committed to its mission for several years now.

The board decided some time ago that they would form an outreach committee, which I've chaired since its inception and Darrin Thomas and I now co-chair.

Through the years, we've planned several programs to promote diversity, to make everyone in the Midlands and throughout South Carolina feel that they are welcome to a South Carolina Philharmonic concert.

And that's what the mission of the South Carolina Philharmonic is, to provide symphonic music to all segments of society.

And when we tried to plan this program many months ago and up until the date of this program, we had no idea what its true purpose would be.

And that reminds us that God always has our purpose in hand.

We might plan, but God has it in hand.

Ladies and gentlemen, we are living through some perilous times now and we have to remind ourselves that we have to seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all other things shall be added unto thee.

Yes, there'll be some difficult days ahead for South Carolinians and for all Americans, but we have to remind ourselves as the part of the 23rd Psalm says, "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil for God is with me.

His rod and staff, they comfort me."

So ladies and gentlemen, at this time, I would like to present to you Mr.
