WHAT IS THE PERSON'S MOTIVATION?
WHAT IS THEIR STORY THEY'RE TELLING THEMSELVES?
MAN: THE MONSTER IS VERY HUMAN, VERY MUCH A METAPHOR FOR A LOT OF THINGS.
YOU CAN ALMOST SYMPATHIZE WITH THE MONSTER, AND THEY BECOME, IN SOME WAYS, THE BEST PARTS OF BOOKS, EVEN IF AT THE END WE KNOW THEY MUST GO AWAY OR DIE.
THERE'S A LOT TO BE LEARNED FROM PEOPLE WHO DO THINGS THE WRONG WAY.
AND I THINK VILLAINS ARE SOMETIMES OUR BEST GUIDE IN TEACHING US THAT.

MAN: THE THING THAT MAKES "MOBY-DICK" SO GREAT IS THAT IT'S REALLY ABOUT, YOU KNOW, WHY ARE PEOPLE BAD?
IT HAS AHAB, WHO IS THE VILLAIN.
HE'S JUST A NORMAL MAN, YOU KNOW, HUMAN BEING WHO FOR SOME REASON SOME DARKNESS HAS BEEN UNLOCKED IN HIM.
WHAT IS IT IN THE WORLD THAT INSPIRED AHAB TO BE THE WAY HE IS?
VIEIRA: MELVILLE HAD A FASCINATION WITH THE SEA.
AND AT THE AGE OF 20 TOOK A VOYAGE ACROSS THE ATLANTIC AS A CABIN BOY, THE FIRST OF MANY OCEAN TRAVELS THAT INSPIRED HIS FAMOUS STORY.
IN THE LEGENDARY NOVEL, AHAB IS THE CAPTAIN OF A WHALING SHIP AND SEEKS REVENGE AGAINST THE WHALE THAT BIT OFF HIS LEG.
AHAB USES HIS POWERFUL CHARISMA TO CONVINCE THE CREW TO ABANDON THEIR ORIGINAL MISSION AND FOLLOW HIM ON HIS OBSESSIVE, BLOOD-THIRSTY CRUSADE TO KILL THE WHITE WHALE MOBY-DICK.

STOPPING FOR WATER, MAKING SURE THAT THE MEN HAVE ENOUGH TO EAT, MAKING SURE THAT THEY GET ENOUGH SLEEP, THAT BECOMES LESS AND LESS.
VIEIRA: LIKE THE BOOK'S AUTHOR, ENGLISH PROFESSOR MARY EDWARDS IS A SAILOR, AND SHE BRINGS HER STUDENTS TO AN AUTHENTIC SETTING TO EXPLORE MELVILLE'S RENOWNED NOVEL.

ROTHMAN: THE ANTI-HERO IS A FASCINATING THING.
THE INTERNAL LOGIC OF A STORY IS YOU ROOT FOR THE PROTAGONIST.
SO A COOL THING YOU CAN DO TO MAKE YOUR STORY REALLY INTERESTING IS JUST PUT SOMEONE WHO YOU WOULDN'T ORDINARILY ROOT FOR IN THE PROTAGONIST'S SPOT, AND ALMOST LIKE A MAGIC TRICK, WE THE READER IDENTIFY WITH THAT PERSON AND WANT THEM TO SUCCEED.
EDWARDS: I HAVE DEEP SYMPATHY FOR AHAB.
HE THINKS OF HIS WIFE AND CHILD, AND THERE'S A MOMENT WHEN HE CONSIDERS GIVING EVERYTHING UP AND GOING BACK TO BE WITH THEM.
AND THEN THE OBSESSION, THE MONOMANIA TAKES OVER.
AND THAT MOMENT ALWAYS GETS ME.
IT ALWAYS MAKE ME FEEL SO SAD FOR HIM.
GIRL: I THINK THAT IT IS REALLY, REALLY EASY TO TURN PEOPLE INTO MONSTERS.
BUT I SEE A LOT OF HUMANITY IN AHAB.
HE'S JUST A PERSON.
HE WAS HURT, ACTUALLY.

VIEIRA: THE SUBJECT OF OBSESSION IS EXPLORED IN ANOTHER CLASSIC TALE, IN A WAY THAT SEEMS JUST AS APPROPRIATE TODAY AS WHEN IT WAS PUBLISHED IN 1890-- "THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY" BY OSCAR WILDE.
IT IS A WARNING AGAINST FIXATING ON YOUTH AND BEAUTY.
WOMAN: IT'S ESSENTIALLY KIND OF A SCIENCE-FICTION HORROR STORY.
DORIAN GRAY IS A BEAUTIFUL YOUNG MAN OF 20 WHO HAS HIS PORTRAIT PAINTED, AND THROUGH SOME METAPHYSICAL THING THAT HAPPENS, THE PICTURE AGES, AND HE REMAINS HIS YOUNG, UNBLEMISHED SELF.
SOMEHOW THE IDEA THAT NOTHING HE DOES WILL BE REFLECTED ON HIS WRINKLE-FREE FACE GIVES HIM PERMISSION TO GO OUT AND DO THE MOST HORRIBLE, DEBAUCHED THINGS THAT ANYONE COULD IMAGINE.
TOVEY: "THE ONLY WAY TO GET RID OF A TEMPTATION "IS TO YIELD TO IT.

WE LET PEOPLE OFF THE HOOK IF THEY'RE ATTRACTIVE.

AND SO WE DISCOVER PERHAPS A MONSTROUS SIDE OF OURSELVES.
THAT MIGHT BE THE MOST CHILLING PART OF DORIAN GRAY.

I SAID, "I LIKE SCARY BOOKS, I LIKE MYSTERIES, AND I LIKE BOOKS WHERE PEOPLE DIE."
AND BEING A GOOD LIBRARIAN, INSTEAD OF CALLING THE AUTHORITIES, SHE SAID, "HAVE YOU TRIED AGATHA CHRISTIE?"
MAN: "AND THEN THERE WERE NONE" TAKES PLACE IN THE LATE 1930S IN ENGLAND.

IT'S ACTUALLY BECOME THE FORMULA FOR MOST HORROR MOVIES AND A LOT OF MYSTERIES.
IT BASICALLY INVENTED AN ENTIRE FORMULA, AN ENTIRE WAY OF TELLING A STORY, WHICH, OF COURSE, THE BEST BOOKS ALWAYS DO.
THESE TWO OBSESSIONS THIS KILLER HAD, JUSTICE AND MURDER, THESE ARE THE VERY SAME QUALITIES THAT DEFINE A MURDER MYSTERY READER.
THEY LOVE READING ABOUT MURDER.
THEY LOVE READING ABOUT THE BLOOD.
AND THEY ALSO NEED THE COMFORT OF JUSTICE AT THE END.
AGATHA CHRISTIE IS PLAYING WITH THE IDEA OF WHAT THE READER WANTS.
THAT'S WHY IT'S SUCH A SMART, CRUEL BOOK.

YOU KNOW, I STARTED THINKING OF THAT IDEA OF WHAT HAPPENS IF TWO PEOPLE WHO ARE EXPERT STORYTELLERS, AND NICK AND AMY ARE PROFESSIONAL WRITERS, WHAT IF AS THEY GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER, THEY DISCOVER THAT THEY ARE ACTUALLY INDEED VERY DIFFERENT PEOPLE?
VIEIRA: BUT NICK AND AMY AREN'T JUST MANIPULATING EACH OTHER, THEY'RE ALSO KEEPING SECRETS FROM THE READER.
