The farming industry has undergone major changes for decades now, significantly impacting who owns farms and how the work on farms gets done.
Multimedia journalist Taylor Mirfendereski tells us about a local non-profit working to help aspiring farmers build independent businesses.
I am prepping the bed.
Flower grower Pamela Ronson had this day would come again.
I remember thinking, is this the end of Seedfolx Farm Two years ago the city of Detroit seized Ronson's farmland for new development, leaving Ronson without a place to grow.
It's a tricky process to find land, afford land.
There was a sadness that I had to grieve.
Then in Washington, Ronson found Viva Farms, the King and Skagit County non-profit offered Ronson this Woodville plot at a fraction of the going rate.
It's an awesome farm.
It's one of three dozen farms and an incubator program that lets local farmers lease subsidized land and share equipment as they build their businesses.
Our goal is really to break down barriers into entering agriculture.
Bonnie Feldberg helps underserved farmers break into the business.
This is our outdoor classroom.
She's one of the teachers in an eight month course and also serves Spanish speaking farmers.
We want more people to be part of the food system.
Aashay Savla traded his career in finance for farming.
Six years later, he's in the incubator, running a farm full time.
I love this space.
And as Ronson rebuilds on this small slice of land, this farmer is rowing towards a bigger dream.
To save enough for a farm of my own one day.
