In Washington, parents, students and educators have been on edge as immigration enforcement has also increased around schools in the past year.
A bill being considered by the state legislature aims to strengthen protections against raids on campuses.
Last October, federal immigration officers detained a woman dropping off her child at a daycare in Issaquah.
And last month, immigration officers stopped a father in Spokane after he dropped off his ten year old child at school.
Both the father and the daughter later turned themselves in and are at a Texas detention center.
Senate Bill 5906 would make it illegal for school districts, daycare centers, hospitals, colleges and universities to allow immigration enforcement officers to enter nonpublic areas without a warrant or court order.
Bill sponsor State Sen.
Drew Hansen of Bainbridge Island says he has heard from students and families worried about arriving on their campuses to find ICE agents.
We want people to go to school or go to a daycare or go see a doctor without worrying that ICE is going to come into those areas without a warrant and take them away.
Hansen said while this bill reinforces existing protections, not everyone is aware of them.
We already have strong protections in Keep Washington Working that we passed with bipartisan support that keep ICE out of schools, colleges and universities and public hospitals.
But when we are seeing even more ICE activity in Washington state and nationwide, we need to expand and strengthen those protections.
