Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(plane roars) (chimes ring) ♪ Darling ♪ ♪ All my bags are packed ♪ ♪ I'm ready to go ♪ ♪ I'm standing here outside the door ♪ - Over the years, Liza has asked me to help her with her archive and when she asked me to look into one of these storage spaces in LA, I discovered this footage that was rumored to have existed that was her early 1970s concert tour.
♪ Blowing his horn ♪ - It was in possibly deteriorating shape, but we saved it and it was like the lost arc of her career.
♪ So kiss me and smile for me ♪ - She worked her buns off in the '70s.
I mean, she really did.
It was constant touring.
She fed off of it.
- Well, when I was on tour, it always felt well, natch (Liza laughs) 'cause I grew up on tour with Mama and my father on location.
We went everywhere, so nothing shocks me.
(Liza chuckles) And it was fun.
♪ Leavin' on a jet plane ♪ ♪ Don't know when I'll be back again ♪ ♪ Leavin' on a jet plane ♪ - That's what I think.
Would you mind just being quiet?
- I've got it straight, I think.
I go from Berlin to Paris to Gutenberg, - [Speaker] Barcelona and then to Madrid.
- Madrid.
Good God, gig.
And I'm finished in four days.
(laughs) ♪ A lot to be, happy and free ♪ - [Conductor] And I've got two parts here.
(Liza humming) - [Michael] The raw footage of that European tour is spectacular because she is at her peak.
- One, two, three, four, one, two.
(Liza vocalizes) - There's two things that strike me about Liza when she rehearses.
Number one is how quickly she gets things.
And number two is how she rehearses endlessly.
She knows that the process of just repeating something over and over again makes it go deeper and it gives you insight and you come up with little things, the little subtle things.
(gentle music) - [Speaker] It's better to carry it from the backside so it doesn't fall.
- [Speaker] Do it, man.
(Liza singing indistinctly) - Yes, sometimes there's stage fright involved, but very seldom.
It's more like a race horse right before a race.
Your adrenaline gets going and your whole body starts to tingle.
It's very exciting, isn't it?
(Liza singing) I wouldn't be in any other business.
This just kills me.
I love it.
- [Announcer] Mesdames, mesdemoiselles, messieurs, Liza Minnelli.
(show music plays) ♪ Call me a natural man ♪ ♪ I'm a natural man ♪ ♪ I want a natural man ♪ (show music continues) - There are times when you just do nothing but walk around your living room going, I'm not any good.
I'm not any good, and I hate myself.
And then you have to be a little gentle with yourself.
Sit down and say, now wait a minute, it's gonna be okay.
And if you're not good, you'll be better tomorrow night.
Un-huh.
(audience applauds) (upbeat music jazz music) ♪ I'll build a stairway to paradise ♪ ♪ With a new step every day ♪ ♪ I'm gonna get there at any price ♪ ♪ Stand beside, I'm on my way ♪ ♪ I got the blues ♪ ♪ And up above it's so fair ♪ ♪ Shoes go on and carry me there ♪ ♪ I'll build a stairway to paradise ♪ ♪ With a new step every day ♪ - [Speaker] Where the hell are we going?
- Where are we?
- Where am I?
- [Speaker] Copenhagen.
- Copenhagen, thank you.
♪ Wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen ♪ ♪ Wonderful, wonderful, Copenhagen ♪ ♪ Friendly old girl of a town ♪ ♪ 'Neath her tavern light ♪ - Liza was on the tour and I wasn't working.
And she said, come on the tour.
So that's what I did.
And we had a blast.
(jazz music plays) Because we grew up in hotels it was something that we were comfortable with.
That's how we were raised.
It was sort of that feeling of, oh, great hotels, room service.
- Together, Liza and Lorna experienced a lot of things that most children don't experience.
They had a bonding that was very special to them, and they clung to each other.
- [Lorna] Good morning, Jack.
- The footage is a moment in time when I think that they were at their absolute closest.
♪ How they used to hate him ♪ ♪ Cos wouldn't date him ♪ ♪ Thought he was an awful bore ♪ ♪ But he had rhythm ♪ ♪ More than be with him ♪ ♪ So we only started out to practice some more ♪ I'm in Miami and I suddenly lose my voice.
So call up Lorna.
Lorna, what am I gonna do?
I can't do it.
She says, I know exactly what to do.
Here, do this.
Woo woo.
- There was a singing teacher.
He had this strange way of exercising your vocal muscles.
And I thought that he was interesting.
And I thought, okay, if I find him interesting, my sister will find him interesting.
(Liza doing vocal exercises) - Do it again.
(Liza doing vocal exercises) So we both sort of went to him and then we found out that he was a lunatic.
It didn't end well, but it worked.
(Lorna and Liza doing vocal exercises) - That's where we started all that.
And I haven't lost my voice since.
- So now when people either see Liza or they see myself in the dressing rooms or when we're together, whatever, and we're both going, woo, woo, they think, uh-huh, call a doctor.
They're both ready for a home.
(jazz music plays) (audience clapping in unison) - Wait a minute.
We don't have any more songs, but there's somebody here who I'd like you to meet.
Ladies and gentlemen, Lorna.
(audience applauds) ♪ Forget your troubles ♪ ♪ Happy days ♪ ♪ Come on, get happy ♪ ♪ Are here again ♪ ♪ Go on and sing a song ♪ ♪ Clear again ♪ ♪ Hallelujah ♪ ♪ So let's sing a song ♪ ♪ Come on, get happy ♪ ♪ Of cheer again ♪ ♪ Get ready ♪ ♪ Happy days are here again ♪ - We just became really, really great friends as we were growing up, instead of the real little sister and the older sister.
♪ Happy days are ♪ - My sister is the best sister anyone could ever have.
♪ Here again ♪ (audience applauds) - Thank you, good night.
♪ I like to travel live ♪ ♪ Yes, I like ♪ - The people who paid money to come and see me to think that they would pay to come and see me, that was heaven.
