After everything I've heard, how could I resist a visit?
♪ (Barry) You're not gonna introduce us, Leila?
(glasses clinking) ♪ Barry.
♪ Ahmed.
♪ (seagulls cawing) ♪ (Sergeant Pettigrew) So the heartbroken boyfriend, the bad breakup, it was--it was all a lie?
(Inspector O'Hare) We needed a cover story.
You'd never have believed that she'd suddenly just shown up because of a simple transfer.
So this, um, allegation about Leila--?
(Sergeant Pettigrew) That she was having an affair with a witness?
If you ask me, seems a lot more likely with her working undercover.
(mellow music) (Rafid) You've really landed on your feet, eh?
♪ (DC Hussain) What's with the fake name?
Just following your lead.

(overlapping conversations) (Inspector O'Hare) You said you had it on good authority.
(Sergeant Pettigrew) Mhm, Jane Dooley.
Sergeant in Nottingham.
We were on a training course together.
(Inspector O'Hare) How many times have you met?
Um, just--just the once, yeah.
So she's barely an acquaintance?
If you call her, she talks to someone who talks to someone and suddenly half of Nottingham Police know that Leila's in Port Devine.
Yeah, but why would her old colleagues knowing where she is be such a bad thing?
(dramatic music) Leila, it's Finn.
You call me ASAP, as soon as you get this.
(Sergeant Pettigrew) Finn.
(door clicking) Finn.
♪ (Rafid) A bent copper who's a mate of my brother called me.
(energetic music) Let's just nip outside, yeah?
(Rafid) No, he told me a right old tale.
Told me all about you.

Here where you vanished off to, and why.
(peppy music) So I borrowed my mate Ahmed's wheels, jumped on the ferry.
Did you tell anyone you were coming over here to see me?
(PC McCarthy) Ahmed, how are you?
♪ -How do you two know each other?
-The gym.
Ahmed was in my spin class.
(PC McCarthy) Ah, prefer the open road myself.
(clearing throat) So when'd you get in?
(Rafid) Uh, this morning.
Pretty smooth sailing, so far at least.

(DC Hussain) Everyone knows everyone around here.
(Rafid) Is that right?

(PC McCarthy) So what brings you to Port Devine?

♪ (PC McCarthy) Sure, you need anything from the bar?
-I'm grand.
-Ahmed?
(Rafid) I wanna keep a clear head.

(PC McCarthy) Cool.
♪ (indistinct conversations) (Rafid) Can't be real honest salt of the earth people, can ya?
Let's just stay calm, yeah?
I'm just here to talk.
♪ (seagulls cawing) (phone dinging) (Inspector O'Hare) It's just Shay.
Nothing urgent.
(Sergeant Pettigrew) Finn, what--?
What sort of undercover work was Leila doing?
It was gang related.
As the case progressed, it got too dangerous for her in Nottingham, so until it goes to court she's to lie low here under my threat management.
Do you think there's a real danger of reprisals.
(Inspector O'Hare) Enough danger for them to put a sea between her and them.
(suspenseful music) I don't like it.
♪ (DC Hussain) I swear to you, whenever I have been able I have always told you the truth.
(scoffing) (chuckling) (mellow music) (Rafid) Do they know?
Hm?
Do they know you are a copper?
(DC Hussain) Rafid, please.
♪ Did you tell anyone else in Nottingham about me?
♪ (Rafid) Not yet.
(door creaking) -Hey ya, ma.
-Right.
-How are you?
-(indistinct).
-Hey, Clint.

(Sergeant Pettigrew) Hey ya.
♪ Callum, who is that?
(PC McCarthy) Uh, we reckon it's Leila's ex.
Ahmed you call him.
♪ (DC Hussain) Why don't we go somewhere more private?
(Rafid) Go on then.
♪ (Sergeant Pettigrew) Where they off to?
(Inspector O'Hare) The ex was a cover story, so who's this guy?
(Sergeant Pettigrew) Was there an Ahmed in the Nottingham crew?
-Don't think so.
-He fits the witness description Jane gave me.
(Inspector O'Hare) I'll text her.
(sighing) ♪ (PC McCarthy) Uh, Ahmed lad seems pretty intense, doesn't he?
-What's it matter to you, lad?
-Oi, sour pus.
Why are you in a twist?
-Wedding's off.
-What?
♪ (clinking) ♪ (Inspector O'Hare) What is she doing out there?
What if her cover's been blown?
(Sergeant Pettigrew) All the signs point to an inappropriate relationship with a witness, who fits the description of Ahmed.
No.
If she'd been lying directly to my face, I'd know.
Would you?
To work undercover, you have to be good at deception.
It's literally the job, and I mean, it's not-- it's not the first time you've been spun a yarn by a woman, mate.
Right.
That's long enough.
(Sergeant Pettigrew) Um.
(suspenseful music) No, no, no, no.

Sorry.
(door opening) (seagulls cawing) ♪ (water sloshing) ♪ (Rafid) How am I supposed to believe a word you say?
♪ (DC Hussain) Nottinghamshire Police had intel that guns were coming in through the city.
They recruited me to gain access to the gang involved and investigate, undercover.
(exhaling heavily) (seagulls cawing) (waves gently crashing) Guns, Rafid, and not just pistols.
Heavy weaponry.
MP5s, ARs, stuff that would do real damage.
I had to stop that.
So you played me.
Can a lad not have a moment's peace without you in my grill.
(DC Hussain) It's a cute clip.
I'm gonna send it to myself.
So.
(ominous music) (chuckling) ♪ (seagulls cawing) ♪ (car whirring) (Nicole) The whole thing was a bad idea.
I was ready to tear his head off over the whole paint thinner vodka that he was flogging.
So he goes and throws himself down on one knee.
-He was never serious.
-Ah, I'm sure -that's not the case.
-He referred to our wedding as a waste of cash.
I mean, it's my money.
(Concepta) Well, a man can be touchy about that sort of thing.
Well, it's there to be spent.
And I want to celebrate with friends, especially since I can't with family.
(mellow music) (seagulls cawing) (Rafid) You knew I liked you.
You just didn't care if I got hurt, so long as you got closer to my brother Zayn.
I messed up, badly.
My mom's in bits since he was locked up.
She barely been out of bed.
Crying even more than when Dad died.
(sniffling) And she's looking to me to fix it.
(dramatic music) The things they're charging Zayn with, oh, possession of firearms with intent and--and conspiracy to supply.
There's no way he's guilty of that.
He's innocent.
But still looking at at least 10 years inside, and already he's having a tough time.

I wasn't arrested or questioned, so they think I'm a grass.
♪ Me.
(exhaling heavily) ♪ You know who Zayn worked for.
♪ What they're capable of.
How many people they've already hurt.
♪ I bet they'd love to know the whereabouts of the undercover cop who tried to ruin their business.
♪ (Clint) She thinks she keeps me.
(Barry) Well, I never heard you complain before.
(PC McCarthy) Don't be joining the dating pool around here, mate.
The only available woman is now clearly off the market.
It's one day.
I wanna save the money for the thousand days that come after that.
But she just keeps making more and more impossible demands about the wedding, like, the classic cure.
I mean, is she deliberately trying to sabotage this?
(Barry) Clint, son, you know this is all about the parents.
Why is that?
'Cause they can't be there.
(somber music) ♪ (sighing) ♪ (Rafid) But before this morning the only time I'd seen the sea was with Zayn.
Soon as he got wheels we drove to Blackpool.
He wanted to take the kid brother on an adventure, you know?
We went on a rollercoaster, Zayn buried me in the sand.
Got a rock, no.
You know the stuff.
(seagulls cawing) Mom was livid with him when we got back.
(chuckling) But he didn't let her punish me.
♪ Never let anything bad happen to me.
(birds chirping) I came here hoping the bent cop was wrong.
♪ (exhaling heavily) ♪ (Inspector O'Hare) English reg.
(Sergeant Pettigrew) I double checked with Callum.
Ahmed's from Nottingham.
(thudding) (seagulls cawing) Ahmed claims he got to ferry this morning, Finn.
Finn!
You have to tell me what we're dealing with here.
(dramatic music) ♪ (Inspector O'Hare) Leila discovered that the gang were buying guns and then shifting them onto the street.
The evidence she gathered, that led to -them all being arrested.
-No, no, no, no, hold on.
And you agreed to this?
To have them send her here and put us all in danger?
(Inspector O'Hare) A fellow officer required help.
You'd have done the same thing in my shoes.
Marlene, what if they found her?
♪ (Clint) When I first got with Nicole she wanted me to stay here.
The band didn't tour and so I did.
If I'd have followed the music, could be anywhere by now.
-Like?
-England maybe.
Pottersfield.
Rochdale.
Don't know, Buxton.
(upbeat music) (Nicole) Maybe it is time for a new start.
Look at this apartment in Shoreditch.

-Though you hated London.
Too many people all over the shop, you said.

-The case is a lock.

Black ice on the road, car had skidded, smashed into a tree.
(peppy music) No one could've survived that.
Believe me, there's nothing wrong with a really dull shift doing lots of traffic stops.
And you, you know why you stayed here?
You didn't care anymore about strumming night after night for a bunch of random strangers.
You cared only for Nicole.
♪ (sighing) (Nicole) All I'm saying is, the world is my oyster.

But you came back to Port Devine 'cause London wasn't home, and after what happened with your parents, God rest them, this didn't feel like it either, until Clint showed up.
You were both lost until you found each other.
Don't be throwing that away over money.
♪ Love's worth fighting for, or should be.
(contemplative music) ♪ (tense music) ♪ (keys jingling) (doorknob rattling) ♪ (DC Hussain) Concepta!

(Rafid) The last ferry leaves in two hours.
(DC Hussain) Passport's upstairs.
I really hate that all this happened.
I wish we could've met under different circumstances.
(sighing) Remember after that art opening we missed the night bus.
I reckoned it would be a nice walk home.
(sighing) Talk about a couple of drowned rats when we got back to yours.
Thankfully your mom made us that thing.
Heated us right up.
(contemplative music) ♪ She's such a lovely woman.
♪ I really hope she's okay.
(Rafid) Ah!
(dramatic music) ♪ Don't you dare talk about her.
-Be careful.
-The whole time I've known you and trusted you you've been playing me.
Oh, and here you tried it again.
But I see it now.
♪ I see through you.
♪ It's time to go.
♪ (seagulls cawing) ♪ (Sergeant Pettigrew) So the car came from Liverpool on the first ferry.
It's registered to an Ahmed Khan.
(Sergeant Pettigrew) And there's no sign of him on the ferry passenger manifest.
(Inspector O'Hare) All right, so he owns the car, but he's not on the ferry.
(Sergeant Pettigrew) Mm, records have a couple of known associates.
Safar Shamsa, Larry Grant, Rahin Wessin, and Zayn Kardar.
(Inspector O'Hare) They're all active threats against Leila.
Are any of them on the manifest for that sailing?
Uh, there's a Rafid Kardar listed here.
-I wanna see that coward again.
-Kay.
(suspenseful music) (door opening and closing) ♪ (Rafid) I wonder what was real and what was lies.
When I told you about my dad you said it was cancer with your mom, too.
That was true, I swear.
Ha, you're really something.
♪ (glass shattering) ♪ (car doors clicking) ♪ (Sergeant Pettigrew) Anything?
(rustling) ♪ -Marlene.
-Yeah?
♪ (Inspector O'Hare) Rafid Kardar.
(Sergeant Pettigrew) Ah.
You said Leila was investigating a Zayn Kardar, yeah?
(Inspector O'Hare) Yeah, so if this Rafid's a relative, she's in serious trouble.
(seagulls cawing) I'm sorry Zayn's having a rough time inside, but you need to know that you, your mom, and the public -are safer with him in there.
-What did you say?
The others wanted to sell the guns.
Your brother wanted to use them.
Nah.
-No, you're lying again.
-Not this time.
I told you he's been framed.

(seagulls cawing) (unsettling music) ♪ Give me the gun back.

Those coppers are already on to me.

(DC Hussain) There's Barry's taxi.
(Rafid) The old guy, right?
Can you get the keys off of him?
-What am I supposed to say?
-You'll come up with something.
Listen to me, you go in like this, they'll notice.
Barry's ex-police.
(Rafid) No, I'll be fine.

♪ Emotions are running high.
(Concepta) Calm heads will prevail.

♪ Earlier, it was silly.

Ahmed's car needs a jump.
(Barry) Ah, I'm sorry, I can't now.
♪ Why don't I grab your keys and I'll sort it?

-The cab's parked-- -Yeah, I saw.
No worries.
(Barry) Right, uh, that's the cab.
That is the new boat, and the HMS Incentive is a very fine Seabird-- (Concepta) You've had the thing two weeks.
I don't think we need to hear about it every day.
(DC Hussain) Thanks.
-Have them back in a jiffy.
-Are you off now?
Uh, yeah, got stuff to sort at home.
(Barry) Well, look, you're welcome here any time.
♪ (suspenseful music) (DC Hussain) Will you tell Sergeant Dawson I won't be in tomorrow?

♪ -Have you got a minute?
-We've gotta go.
(Nicole) I'm having the worst day.
(DC Hussain) Clint will cheer you up.
♪ (PC McCarthy) Hey, you know a Sergeant Dawson?

♪ (coughing) ♪ -No sign?
-No.
-Nothing from Leila?
-Still going to voicemail.
(Sergeant Pettigrew) Finn, I would never have made that call about Leila if I thought she'd be in danger.
(Inspector O'Hare) Shouldn't have kept you in the dark.
We'll check my mom's, we'll check the streets around there, then we'll circle back to the Commodore.
If they're out there, we'll find them.
(Sergeant Pettigrew) No, no, we need to call this in.
The control room needs to take over.
It's already got out of hand.
(PC McCarthy) Hey, you guys seen Leila?
-Why?
-She was up in the bar there.
-Something was up.
-With Ahmed?
-Callum.
-Yeah, she was with him.
Yeah, looking for Barry's car keys.
Said something about a Sergeant Dawson, which was weird.
I think Ahmed's trouble.
-Barry's cab?
-Yeah, it's parked up by the lighthouse.
Marlene, if we wait for backup, they'll be long gone.
-What's going on?
-"Sergeant Dawson" is a code for an undercover under duress.
-What?
-Uncle Barry's car keys?
♪ I have an idea.
(clinking) (Nicole) Here's the rest of your stuff.
(solemn music) ♪ (Clint) Do you want me to leave this?
I know you like to sleep in it.
No, thank you, it's scratchy.
Right.
Do you remember the trick with the thermostat?
'Cause Barry'll do your head in if the bar's one degree above or below what he's used to.
Turn it three times till it clicks -and then if it gets jammed-- -If it gets jammed, Barry can put a coat on.
(Clint) Why are you being like this?
-You're egging me on.
-I don't know what you're talking about.
This is the all-you-can-eat dinner again.
♪ You thought I'd ate too much and ruined the evening.
-And you did.
-No.
You were terrified what people would think if they saw how much you ate, so you made me eat more and more until-- Well, I can't go back to Captain Murdoch's Shantytown -again, can I?
-What is your point, Clint?
♪ When you get scared you crash everything in around yourself.
Total self-sabotage, because you don't believe you deserve any better.
(contemplative music) The wedding, the classic cure, the money.
It's another all-you-can-eat.
♪ (sighing) (Rafid) Come on, come on, come on.
(DC Hussain) Mate, this isn't you.
(Rafid) It's who I have to be.
(DC Hussain) And if this all goes exactly how you hope, you'll be looking over your shoulder for the rest of your life.
(Rafid) I already am.
(DC Hussain) You're doing all this for your mom, but if you don't stop, she's gonna end up losing both her boys.

(tense music) ♪ (Inspector O'Hare) Gun, gun!
He's got a gun.
It's over, Rafid.
Put down the gun.
Drop the gun!
♪ (Rafid) Not yet.
Drop the weapon!
(Rafid) Which boat?
(DC Hussain) That's Barry's.
(breathing heavily) -No closer.
-Rafid, drop the gun and step away from Detective Constable Hussain.
(DC Hussain) This isn't gonna work.
(Rafid) It's a small boat in a big sea.
We'll slip across.
♪ (creaking) (beeping) ♪ (PC McCarthy) They're just drifting.
We should do something.
(Inspector O'Hare) We need to wait.
♪ (DC Hussain) Rafid, you know when we get to Nottingham, the gang, they're gonna-- Once you've changed your statement, the case will be thrown out and Zayn will be home.
-That'll be that.
-No, Rafid.
They'll kill me.
This time tomorrow I'll be dead.
♪ That won't happen.
♪ (gunshot firing) ♪ (thudding) (panting) ♪ (clicking) Clear!
(seagulls cawing) -You okay?
-Yeah.
(sighing) (panting) (mellow music) -Hey, lads, what's going on?
-What was that?
Sounded like a gunshot.
(Inspector O'Hare) Oh, that was a car backfire.
(seagulls cawing) Okay.
We'll head back inside.
-Grand?
-Yeah.
-See ya in a bit.
-See--see ya later.
(Barry) Come.
(solemn music) ♪ (Clint) I didn't mean what I said about the money and your parents.
I got defensive, ran my mouth off.
Truth is, I don't know what I'd do if I lost you.
(Nicole) Me neither.
And some of what you said, well, you were right.
(mellow music) (Clint) We're built to last, me and you.
Not if we keep throwing ourselves in front of bullets.
(Barry) Aye, car backfire.
-Pour the other one, Finn.
-Shh.
There's only one thing left to do.
(pleasant music) ♪ I really wanna marry you, Nicole Devine.
♪ Will you do me the honor?
♪ Yes.
♪ Get up the floor, you idiot.
(chuckling) ♪ (Sergeant Pettigrew) I know Uncle Barry keeps his taxi and boat keys together, so if we cut Rafid off from the car, he had only one way of getting you to England.
-Barry's boat.
-Yeah.
Kay, I'll leave you two.
(Inspector O'Hare) Hey, you all right?
-You-- -Fine.
(Inspector O'Hare) No injuries?
(solemn music) Fine, yeah.
♪ (Inspector O'Hare) Good.
♪ He's not in cuffs?
(DC Hussain) No, I didn't arrest him.
Why not?
♪ (mellow music) ♪ (DC Hussain) Earlier I meant what I said.
I didn't want you or your poor mom dragged into any of this.
It was my first time working undercover.
I made a lot of mistakes.
You were right, I used you, and it was wrong.
I'm sorry.
But, Rafid, I need to know, were you being honest when you said no one else in Nottingham knows I'm here?
Only Chris Winters, the bent cop.
(Inspector O'Hare) I'll be dealing with him.
Same way as I'd like to deal with you.
Arrested, charged, punished.
(Rafid) I was just trying to help my brother.
(Inspector O'Hare) Did Zayn put you up to this?
Conspiracy to commit murder, perverting the course of justice, kidnap, false imprisonment.
I hope Zayn's got no plans for the next 40 years.

I was--I was just trying to do right by him and Mom.

(papers rustling) (door opening) (thudding) We prosecute, word gets out I'm here, I'll be moved on.
And over in Nottingham the defense barristers will try to shift all blame on the Kardar brothers.
(seagulls cawing) Suddenly Rafid's in prison and the real criminals get a shot at an acquittal.
So what do we do now?
-We let him walk.

Rafid made an enormous mistake, sure.
But look, end result was what?
I asked Barry for the boat keys.
I volunteered to go back with him.
He abducted you and then threatened your life.
-He was desperate.
-Most criminals are.
(Sergeant Pettigrew) Finn, I heard some of what was said on the boat, and that kid had no idea about the lethal reality -of what he was doing.
-Doesn't make it okay, Marlene.
Rafid's not his brother.
He's not a danger to other people.
We put him inside, he might become one.
So we just give him a free ride?
(Rafid) He's gonna punish himself a lot more than we could.
And I don't have to get sent away.
I've only just learnt what "slap in the bake" means.
-I can't believe this.
-We did the same thing for Shay.
Don't bring my son into it.
-That was totally different.
-We decided it was a stupid mistake that shouldn't define Shay's prospects.
When I met Rafid he was starting university.
Let him finish.

(Sergeant Pettigrew) Leila's right.
But he better keep his beak shut.
(DC Hussain) He will.
(contemplative music) Are you sure?
