♪ ♪ MOSES: I moved to Paris a while back to work for a private detective by the name of Patrick Nash.
Do you know him?
Only by reputation.
A somewhat checkered one, as I understand it.
I helped him set things up in Paris, but the deal was, I'd go out on my own after a couple of years and set up my own agency.
And that's what I did.
It's a big city, there was room for both of us.
I take it you know what happened to Patrick when he returned to London.
I do.
Last I heard, he was released from prison and had a one-way ticket out of London Docks.
I don't know where he was headed.
Yes, you do.
You can trust Inspector Blake.
(breathes deeply) He was meant to sail to Australia, but he changed his mind on the way.
He stopped off in Madagascar for a while, then Hong Kong, then Singapore, where he was running a casino.
(chuckles): Of course he was.
He'd send me postcards.
He'd never say who they were from, but I knew it was him.
Things went quiet for a while until a week ago.
He wrote to me again, said he had a job for me in London.
(inhales) And there was someone he wanted me to meet.
(lock turns) (grunts) Venezuela!
Interesting.
♪ ♪ (footsteps approaching slowly) Morning.
Mr.
Nash said to expect a visitor.
That'll be me.
Would you kindly confirm your name?

I know who I'm expecting, but given that we have never met, you could be anybody-- name, please.
Moses.

Due to the nature of the task we have been asked to perform, I am duty-bound to check your identity.

As you may be aware, um, Mr.
Nash has been traveling the globe in search of business opportunities.
His travels have taken him far and wide, and he now finds himself in Venezuela, where he is running a diamond mine.
A diamond mine?
At first, it seemed that it would be a waste of time.
The only thing they dug up was rock and clay.
But after much backbreaking work, they found a huge uncut stone estimated to be nearly 100 carats.
A 100-carat diamond?
And he's bringing it to London?
Mr.
Nash decided it would not be in his best interests to come in person.
You may be aware of the unfortunate circumstances involving a Lord Campbell and a certain Dylan Cooper.
One wants to put him in jail, the other wants to kill him.
Precisely, hm.
So, the diamond is being brought over by a third party.
And who might that be?
I'll tell you on the way.
Come along.
Apparently, Mr.
Nash has a business partner who owns the other half of the mine.
This partner is currently on a ship that docks in London this very day.
With the stone?
With the stone.
(lock turns) We are to go to the diamond merchants of Hatton Garden tomorrow and sell it to the highest bidder.
I am to arrange the financial side of the deal and you are to provide security.
And as such, I will need you to present me with a detailed overview of your plan.
Who put you in charge?

Nash.

Yeah, well, he, he didn't actually say it, but he implied it.
(scoffs) All right, fine, well, I assumed it.
If that diamond is 100 carats, there's going to be a lot of interest, and not just from legitimate buyers.

Which is why we need a detailed plan and one person in charge.
And that should be you.

My role has expanded in the past few years, not just with Mr.
Nash, but with Miss Scarlet, too.

That's three weeks sailing if he's on a steamship, stopping off in different ports along the way.

(door opens) FLORENCE (loudly): Mr.

(conversations stop) (door closes) Mr.

♪ ♪ Who else knew you were coming to London, apart from Nash?

Look, I don't know what's going on, either.
I wish I'd never got involved in any of this!
(gasping): Oh, I need some air.
(exhales) ♪ ♪ Do you trust her?

(breathes deeply) We spent the rest of the day going round every jeweler and diamond trader in London.
They'd all heard of it, but none of them had seen it.
ELIZA: Moses, your hand.

(exhales) (Moses exhales, Eliza inhales sharply) (breathes deeply) It needs cleaning and a fresh bandage.

If you bleed on that rug, you'll have Ivy to deal with.

(gasps) (dog barking) (people talking in background) ♪ ♪ FLORENCE: Hm.
This place will do for tonight.

(door closes) He'll keep his mouth shut.
CLARENCE: So would I, if I owned this place.
There were rats on the stairs.
I don't know what's worse, the fact that I'm now a fugitive or that I'm about to sleep the night in a room infested with my worst nightmare.
(breathing deeply) ♪ ♪ (diamond set on dresser) What is going on?
And do not insult us by saying you don't know.
♪ ♪ I'm no widow.
Patrick Nash and I met at the horse races in Singapore.
We hit it off immediately.
We're both very good at parting rich people from their money.
You're a confidence trickster.
(sighs) I'm a businesswoman.
Patrick and I teamed up together and we traveled the world.
We ended up in Venezuela, where he won the diamond mine in a game of cards.
Well, the owner, he couldn't wait to get it off his hands.
He hadn't found anything in years.
I thought it was a waste of time, but Patrick, he stuck at it.
And six months later, we dug up a 100-carat diamond.
The luck of the Irish.
Well, the plan was to get on the next boat to London and sell it, but word started to spread.
Whole area full of diamond-hunters, including a gang from Amsterdam.
(exhales) The men who robbed us?
We knew someone would tell them, so we hatched a plan.
Two diamonds.
One real and one fake.
This is the fake.
(scoffing) A skilled dealer could tell the difference, but only under close examination.
To the naked eye, it looks completely real.
So, after they robbed us, the gang must have spotted it was a fake and killed this Cornelius as a punishment.
♪ ♪ On the boat over, I let Cornelius see this fake one in my bag-- accidentally-on-purpose type thing.
I needed to look stupid enough to do something like that, so hence the merry widow act.
♪ ♪ When the boat docked in London, he pointed me out to his mate with the eye patch, and I knew they would rob me at some point.
So, where is the real diamond?
I gave it to Edmund.
Who's Edmund?!
FLORENCE: He was posing as the cab driver.
He met me off the boat.
It's all right.
They're with me.
FLORENCE: I kept the fake diamond in my hand luggage and slipped the real one into Edmund's hand.
See?
No harm done.
The plan was for Edmund to lay low for a few days until the coast was clear.
We thought by the time the Dutch gang had got back to Amsterdam, realized it was a fake, well, we'd be long gone.
So, why didn't you tell us what your plan was from the beginning?
Patrick thought the fewer who knew, the better.
(inhales) So, if this Edmund has the real diamond, where is he now?
He was meant to send me a telegram of where and when to meet, but I haven't heard from him.
And you've no idea how to contact him?
Not a clue.
(inhales) This Edmund wasn't really a cab driver.
Florence knew he rented a horse and carriage, so we went round every cab rank near the docks.
After a couple of hours, we found a cabbie who shared some information with us.
After some financial persuasion from Clarence.
Some hefty financial persuasion.
I bet Clarence wasn't happy about that.
No, he was not.
So, what did this cab driver tell you?
That he loaned his ride to a man matching the description of Edmund.
He said, when Edmund returned the carriage, he asked the cab driver to drop him at a pub called the Fisherman's Friend.
A pub with lodging rooms above it.
(door opens) (people talking in background) (door closes) Well?
The landlord said he left early this morning.
Something must have happened.
Edmund would only divert from the plan if he was being followed.
Or he double-crossed you.
I have an idea.
Edmund would never double-cross me.
For this kind of money, anyone would.
So, my idea... You don't know what you're talking about, Mr.
Valentine.
I know enough.
He's my father.
♪ ♪ Didn't know that, did you?
Does anyone want to hear my idea or not?

What?
You said he meant to send you a telegram.
You two head back-- I'll investigate.

(inhales) Patrick Nash doesn't trust anyone.
(exhales) (chuckles) Not even his sons, hm?
(both chuckle) But he trusts you and Clarence.

(clears throat) What's she like?
(chuckles) He goes on about her so much, about how clever she is.
(exhales) Is she very beautiful?

Nash and Eliza are good friends, nothing more.

(door opens) (blows out) (breathes deeply) (softly): Edmund sent a telegram to the office.
It was signed for by a tall gentleman with an eye patch.
Well, what did the message say?

So we know where to meet him.

Problem is, so do they.
♪ ♪ Grenville Street Market is a stone's throw away from Hatton Garden.
It's a busy area.
A good place to meet and hand over the diamond.
My father's a clever man.
He's a dead man if we don't get to him first.
Our Dutch friends will be waiting for him, too.
We've five hours before the meet.
Any suggestions on how we get the diamond, save Edmund's life, whilst avoid being killed ourselves?
(sighs) First things first.
We need to blend in.
And be less... Conspicuous?
(sighs) Clarence, how much money have you got left?

(inhales) Why would Nash give you another fake diamond?
(sniffs) Maybe there never was a diamond.
Maybe someone swapped the real one for a fake on the boat.
Either way, it's been a waste of time!
Gosh.
I wish I had known all about this, especially what happened with Clarence.
But of course, I've been away at the seaside.
Southampton's very pretty this time of year.
Full of visitors, so I was lucky, really, to find a small but clean hotel with a sea view.
(inhales) I took in the air, walked the length of the pier, and then went to the port to watch the arrival of a steamship.
It had just crossed the Atlantic from Caracas in Venezuela.
♪ ♪ There are two ships that arrive from that part of the world each week.
One goes to London, the other to Southampton.
Which is where I met Patrick Nash.
(exhales) And, uh, that's when he gave me this.
♪ ♪ A 100-carat diamond.
With legal documentation and full provenance.
I'll be going to Hatton Garden tomorrow to sell it on behalf of Patrick and his business partner.
They will take the lion's share, but Clarence, myself, and, of course, you, Moses, will receive a large fee.
Patrick asked me to apologize on his behalf for the deception, but he said you'd understand.
(chuckling) Only when I see the money.
Well, I'd be most grateful if you'd accompany me to Hatton Garden tomorrow.
I'll have to check my diary.
