There's a house in Hollandstrasse I need to run surveillance.

She had a fit of some kind.

♪ Something she witnessed has caused a powerful trauma.

Oskar: What do you mean?
I mean you were expecting the devil, and disappointed he's just flesh and blood, that he's real.
Hmm.
[Whispers] Oskar!
Oskar, where are you going?
[Suspenseful music playing] ♪ ♪ ♪ Go there, go there.
[Exhales sharply] Haussmann: Max, on your left.
[Panting] [Bird squawks] [Wings flutter] ♪ [Ducks quacking] ♪ Sorry.
♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ Oskar: I saw him, Max.
I stared right in his face.
Which way did he go?
Oskar: I don't know.
[Running footsteps] [Panting] He isn't here.
It's like he vanished.
Oskar: Max, where are you going?
Max.
Why come here in broad daylight?
Why risk being seen?
[Sighs] Oskar: What are you doing?
[Sniffles] ♪ ♪ ♪ "Ugovor prestojece."
♪ ♪ [Knock on door] Come in.

Rheinhardt, what's Liebermann doing here?

This is a highly sensitive investigation.
Oskar: This is Dr. Liebermann.

Max: I'm trying to build a profile of Kiss.

A psychological picture, as useful as any photograph.
Inspector, this is all highly irregular.

"Ugovor" means "treaty."
It says the treaty, whatever it is, is imminent.
Herr Minister, I saw him up close.

Bosnia and Herzegovina... are soon to be incorporated into the Empire.
The Serbs' unification dream will be crushed.
Their ambitions will be reduced to rubble.

♪ [Sniffling] ♪ ♪ [Sighs] You can't stay there.

He goes to all that trouble to hide them, and then leaves the nail sitting in a wineglass.
It's as if he wants the hounds on his tail.

The girl, the pickpocket who stumbled on the corpse.

She's the key to this.

She's the reason all of this happened.

♪ Max: Anton Resch had been rotting in that hovel for weeks, and then, miraculously, he is found.

[Overlapping chatter] ♪ It was here.
It was in the carriage.
Oskar, we brought the bomb to the castle.
Uh, the driver, did you see him?
Yes.
He went upstairs with a crate of wine.
Upstairs?

To the dining room.
♪ Gentlemen, this historic signature signals a symbol of trust between us, and-- Strasser: What's going on?

[Inhales, gulps] [Sighs] [Bell clanging outside] Max, where are you going?

[Bell continues clanging] [Grunts] ♪ Ooh.

This is so embarrassing.

Oskar: Kiss controlled everything.

He was watching me... feeding me clues.
♪ There were two of them-- two actors, Kiss and his accomplice.
♪ Oskar: All the time, she was listening.
♪ They're laughing at us, Max.
She's laughing at me.
♪ The devil won't be caught a second time.
We'll see.
[Overlapping chatter] Man: What is this?
She came home.
♪ [Distant horse neighs] [Uncocks gun] ♪ Max, voice-over: A writer once said, "If the devil did not exist, "then Man would create him, in his own image and likeness."
We look at people all around us, yet we don't see them for what they are.
We see instead what we want them to be, a projection of our own needs and desires.
♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ Oskar: Apparently, you've been busy.
Max: I assume it's a case.
