Okay, you got it.
Good job.
Oh, hi!
Good morning.
I was just helping Clifford.
He's getting ready for his class online with his teacher and he was having a little trouble.
Does that happen to you?
I think it happens to everybody.
I found a great story.
I know, I know, one of my favorites.
Yes, it is.
It's called "The Great Kapok Tree" by Lynn Cherry.
And I wanna tell you, this story is really super special to me because I went to a teacher conference one time and there was this man there with his guitar and he had turned this book into songs.
Like every animal of the rain forest had its own song and it was magical.
So I have never been able to read this book again without just thinking about how amazing that music was.
And it's pretty awesome.
But this is a great story even without the music.
So I hope you'll check it out.
You can look for it at your county public library.
And listen to this, if you use the Sora app like we do in Fresno Unified, our Sora app will connect you right to the county public library.
Isn't that cool?
So you can look for it on Sora and if it's not there, it'll connect you right to the county library and you can look for it right online.
How awesome is that?
Can't get any easier.
That is so cool.
Boys and girls, I want you reading every single day.
Have someone read to you, you read to others, because that is what is going to make you an excellent reader and writer.
I'm Mrs. Hammack, and welcome to our PBS classroom where we practice and learn all the skills that you need to be an excellent reader and writer.
So I want you to find a good book.
Okay?
All right, now, I was just talking to you about the Sora app and I'm excited.
This week, we actually have a top five in Fresno Unified.
So we're gonna see who our top five Sora checkout schools were.
That means their boys and girls have checked out the most books and been reading.
Wow.
That is awesome.
I know everyone's gonna be super proud of them.
So let's find out today who is in the number five spot, okay?
All right, let's look at our Sora chart and see who it is.
All right, here we go.
In the number five spot for last week is Ewing Eagles.
Great job, Ewing Eagles.
That is fantastic!
Ewing Eagles representing.
I'm so proud of you.
That is awesome.
Boys and girls, I want you to write me a letter and tell me about what you're reading.
It can be anything.
And I wanna see and hear about what you're writing and reading.
If you have a special book that you would like me to know about, send me a picture of it and write me a couple of sentences to tell me about it.
And I will put in the mail for you one of our fun activity books.
You can send me a letter right here to the address on your screen so that I can get this to you.
Be sure to give me your address.
That way I know where to send it, okay?
Excellent, I can't wait to hear from you.
All right, my loves, it is time for us to, you got it!
Train our ears for sound.
Are you ready?
Today, we are gonna play the categorization game.
I know some of you have played this game with things when you've watched "Sesame Street" or other things.
I'm gonna give you a list of three things.
Two of them go together, but one does not.
And your job is to figure out which word does not belong.
So you're gonna have to use your good detective ears so that you know what is the same and what is different.
Are you ready?
Okay, here we go.
Rap, rough, sing.
Rap, rough, sing.
Did you hear anything that was different?
I heard that rap and rough, both start with the "rr" sound.
Did you hear that?
But (Mrs. Hammack enunciates S sound) sing, it doesn't.
Good job.
All right, let's try the next one.
Let's see if we can get a little trickier because you are pretty tricky.
You must have on your smarty pants today.
Are you ready?
Here we go.
Sick, wall, knit.
Oh, I told you it was gonna be trickier.
Sick, wall, knit.
(Mrs. Hammack hums) Let's see, sick, wall, knit.
(Mrs. Hammack gasps) Did you hear it?
(Mrs. Hammack sounds words out) Sick and knit.
Both say the "i" sound, but wall does not.
Great job.
I love how you were listening.
All right, now we're gonna do a little fluency before I introduce you to our new focus sound for the week.
We have a couple of focus sounds this week 'cause you can handle it, right?
You can do hard things.
So let's do our fluency.
We're just gonna review a few of the things that we have practiced and learned already.
Ready?
O-I says "oi".
Good job.
Do you remember this one?
O-Y says "oy".
Terrific.
Shout it out with me.
O-W says "ow".
Good job.
U-E says "ooh".
E-W says "ooh".
A-W, that's from last week, do you remember what it says?
"Aw".
Right, it has that short O sound.
A-U says "ah".
And oh, are you ready for this one?
A-U-G-H says, "aw".
Now a lot of boys and girls can remember this because it's so long.
It's easy to remember things that are unusual.
So, good practice.
All right, today, I would like to introduce you to what I call the ghost diagraphs.
I'm gonna move this just for a minute but we're gonna come right back to it, so hold on.
All right, here we go.
Here are our ghost letters.
What, what?
Oh, okay.
Well, let me explain why they're called ghost letters.
Well, that's what I call them.
Ghost letters are silent.
So when I try to remember them, what I do is, I'm gonna get my little ghost here, do you see him?
I try to pretend that letter is a ghost and I do not see it, because ghosts are invisible, right?
They don't make any sounds and we can't see them.
So, and they're pretend, so don't worry.
But I pretend that the letter is a ghost and I cannot see it.
That way, I remember the sound.
So we're going to look at the sounds and say the name of the letters.
Okay?
All right.
We're gonna come back to this in a minute but I wanted to share it with you so you could see the ghosts because they're super cute.
And right here, we're gonna start with our rose card.
Because W-R says "rr" just like the R does.
But look, that W is the ghost letter.
It doesn't make a sound.
So we're gonna pretend like it's invisible.
W-R says "rr".
And look right here.
My friend Mrs. Vang made these cool letters for us.
Do you see how she made it look like it's kind of invisible?
Isn't that awesome?
So W-R says "rr".
We're also gonna learn about the nest card because it has two ghost letters.
There is K-N says "n" and G-N says "n".
They both say the same sound.
G-N we're gonna pretend like that G is a ghost and we don't see it.
And we're just gonna say the "n" sound.
And here's the K-N. K's the ghost.
We're gonna pretend like it's not there.
And we're just gonna say the "n" sound.
And then we have the "Mm" card, the map card.
Because at the end of words, we might have this ghost combination.
And on this combination, M-B, the B is the ghost.
We don't hear it at all.
So we just say "mm" sound.
Notice it's at the end of words.
Today, boys and girls, we're gonna just focus on one.
And we're gonna focus on the W-R says "rr".
Like in the word write.
I can write with my pencil.
Isn't that cool?
So let's take a look at our ghost letter chart and we're only gonna look at our W-R ghost, all right?
We're gonna pretend that that W is a ghost and it's not even there.
So here we have, "rr", "ite".
Write.
We have "rr", "eck".
Wreck.
We have "rr", "ist".
Wrist.
"Rr", "ong".
Wrong.
"Rr", "ap".
Wrap.
"Rr", "ote".
Wrote.
You see how that works?
That W is invisible.
We're gonna just pretend like it's not there.
It doesn't make any sound at all.
But these are some of the words that you might see in stories that you're reading.
I know you've seen the word write before.
And you were probably wondering, "Why is there a W?"
And you know what boys and girls, I wish I knew.
I think the people that created our language were just trying to make it extra hard for you because they know how amazingly smart that you are.
So don't be tricked by those tricky ghosts.
Okay?
All right.
So these are the ghost diagraphs.
W-R says "rr".
Did you get it?
Fabulous.
All right, let's take a look at our high-frequency words for this week, okay?
All right-a-roo.
Here we go.
I'm gonna use my reading finger so they can stay right in the chart.
Question is one of our words.
Question.
Q-U-E-S-T-I-O-N.
Question.
Make sure you're saying it with me and write it if you have something to write with.
Their.
T-H-E-I-R. Their.
Now this kind of "their" means something belongs to someone.
It's an ownership word.
Year.
Y-E-A-R. Year.
Month.
M-O-N-T-H. Month.
Been.
B-E-E-N. Been.
And children.
C-H-I-L-D-R-E-N. Children.
All right, let's take a look at our sentences.
You be looking for those words, okay?
"Their group has a question it would like to ask."
Did you see some of our words?
All right.
These very first two, right?
We have "their", and we have "question."
"May is the fifth month of the year."
"May is the fifth month of the year."
Did you see?
Yep.
There's "year" and there's "month".
"The children have been here all day."
Did you see the word "been"?
And did you see the word "children"?
Great job.
Wow!
You have done amazing.
And we're already out of time.
Can you believe it?
I can't.
Will you please come back tomorrow so that we can learn some more ghost letters?
