It was built by the hands of the Oodham people in the 1700s and sees more than 200,000 people each year.
but Im here for the crunchy, savory, fried bread made by Thelma Javier and her family at her stand just outside of the church.
Im here at the San Xavier Mission, and Im so hungry, and I want to try their fried bread.
I feel like I want to try the savory and the sweet.
So youre gonna do this with me.
So whats your most popular fried bread you would say?
Of the sweet bread its our powdered sugar and honey.
Okay, and the savory?
And the savory, its our red chili.
For the red chili its just the beef with the red chili sauce.
And our green chili is the beef with the green chili.
Anaheim chili roasted.
Tomatos and onions.
Okay, well I really want to try both.
So you have the dough and you, you let the dough rest and then you fry it right before people are going to eat it so its super nice and fresh?
And what do you cook it in?
In vegetable oil.
So thats the green chili and thats the red chili.
That looks beautiful!
So deliciously crunchy on the outside, but its so soft inside, and the bubbles of it is such a delight.
Im going to try the red chili now.
I like both, but I think I like the red chili more.
Its soft, its so nice, and spiced.
I dont know.
Its so delicious!
Okay, that looks like enough confectioner sugar for me.
So Ive tried the sweet fried bread.
I love the red chili one, I love the green chili one, but I think I like this one the most.
Okay John.
The best part for you.
So good, so good.
