[MUSIC - PORTSMOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, "SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW"] Season's greetings, everybody.
I'm John page.
And I am Susanne Powers.
And this year, we are so delighted and proud to bring to you all this unexpected year-end musical gift.
We have all felt the weight of 2020.
The range and depth of hardship and loss has been shared across the globe in ways both big and unimaginable.
Yet, one of the hallmarks of our humanity is an ability to look ahead toward the future with a sense of hope.
And there's no better time for optimism than the turning of a new year.
We at the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra wish to thank you now for your loyal patronage and your love of the arts, and your shared hope for the year to come.
We wish we could bring you our annual holiday concert this year.
But we can still brighten your holiday season with the joyful, beautiful gift of music.
[bells jingling] On behalf of the board of directors of the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra, we wish you a happy and healthy new year.
And we look forward to seeing you back in the beautiful Music Hall soon.
[MUSIC - PORTSMOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, "SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW"] Hi.
I'm Tina Sawtelle, executive director here at the Music Hall.
And I'm here with musicians from our resident Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra.
The team at the Music Hall wishes our audiences a happy new year.
We cannot wait to see you once again fill our beautiful concert hall.
See you soon.
[bells jingling] [MUSIC - PORTSMOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA] A central part of the PSO's mission is education and nurturing the young musicians in our community.
Here we have the fantastic kids of our Stringendo program sharing their talents and enthusiasm.
[bells jingling] Hi.
My name is Joe Faro.
And I'm the founder and chief food taster of Tuscan Brands.
And we're here at Tuscan Market in Portsmouth.
And we're so proud today to welcome the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra Youth Ensemble.
These kids are so passionate and so talented.
I know you're going to enjoy them.
It's a shining ray of light in a crazy time right now.
Have a wonderful holiday.
And thank you all for coming.
[MUSIC - PORTSMOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA] [bells jingling] Hi.
I'm Matt Albert, here at the Residences at Portwalk Place.
We are thrilled and proud to welcome the Portsmouth Symphony today.
Thank you so much.
We want to wish everyone a healthy and happy new year.
In 1930, this Irving Berlin classic-- played now by our own string quartet-- was released to Broadway audiences in its eponymous hit musical debut.
And to this day, the melody can hardly be heard without also singing along, if only in our minds.
(SINGING) If you're blue and you don't know where to go to, why don't you go where fashion sits?
Putting on the-- Well, come to think of it, 2020 did bring us a new fashion item.
So "Putting On The Mask" is more like it.
And here is "Putting On The Mask" by the PSO String Quartet.
[MUSIC - PSO STRING QUARTET, "PUTTING ON THE MASK"] [bells jingling] Planning for a virtual concert in 2020 required a certain ability to adapt.
And what better way to celebrate ours than with a group of musicians whose masks are fitted with custom, magnetized, mouthpiece openings and double-layered bell covers.
Here now is the PSO Brass Quintet spreading cheer throughout Portsmouth with Lew Pollack's "That's a Plenty."
[MUSIC - PSO BRASS QUINTET, "THAT'S A PLENTY"] For nearly two decades, the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra has remained an important part of the Greater Portsmouth community.
And community is even now what we are all about.
The PSO comprises professional musicians, yes, but also teachers, doctors, small business owners, farmers, and scientists who come together to form this wonderful and very talented orchestra.
This musical video would not have been possible were it not for the sacrifice of our players, but also the generosity of Portsmouth businesses that stepped up and said, yes, we will support you, proving that even now this community is alive and well.
And so, to the city of Portsmouth and Tuscan market, to the Portwalk Place, the Residence Inn by Marriott and the Music Hall, and to all our sponsors, a heartfelt thanks from all of us at the PSO.
[bells jingling] [MUSIC - PORTSMOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA] [bells jingling] We hope that you've enjoyed our musical gift to you as much as we enjoyed putting it together for our friends and community.
Be safe.
Stay healthy.
And we will see you again at our live concerts.
Happy new year, Portsmouth.
[glasses clanging] See you in 2021.
[laughter] Oh, [inaudible].
[MUSIC - PORTSMOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, "AULD LANG SYNE"]
