I'm so happy to see you.

Do you remember it?
Oh let's do it.
♪ Hello readers ♪ ♪ Hello writers ♪ ♪ Hello campers ♪ ♪ I'm glad you're here today ♪ ♪ Hello readers ♪ ♪ Hello writers ♪ ♪ Hello campers ♪ ♪ I'm glad you're here today ♪ Welcome back to Camp Read A Lot I'm Mrs. Hammack and I am excited to have you here at Camp with me.
Remember, camp is a time of learning and having fun and Camp Read A Lot, we're gonna be talking and singing and learning and reading all kinds of activities together that will help us become strong readers, that's right.
Hey parents, I wanna remind you that if you have your kids read just six books this summer break, they will retain or keep all of that progress that they've made in school.
So we want to encourage you to sit with your kids and read six books, that's it.
And they will be on the right track when school starts, and they won't have slid down that summer slide and lost any of their learning.
We know that that is important, so please read at home.
We know you can do it.
All right campers, are you ready to say our pledge so we can get started today?
All right, get your scout pledge ready.
Repeat after me.
On my honor, I will try my best to be kind to everyone to have a smile on my face and a song in my heart.
Great job.
Okay, It's time for us to train our ears for sound.
Are you ready?
I'm so excited, but wouldn't you know it?
I can't find Scooter again.
Can you help me look for him?
He's not where he was yesterday, do you see him anywhere?
No, I was just there picking up pine cones, he wasn't there either.
Scooter, what?
Oh, in the tree.
Scooter, what you doing over there?

All right, what are we gonna do today Scooter?
Oh, I love that game.
Today, boys and girls, we're gonna play the segmenting game, are you ready?
All right, so let me remind you, Scooter and I are going to tell you a word and you are gonna take it apart, one sound at a time, okay.
All right, you ready?
Oh, Scooter says he already has the first word.
You ready to know what it is?
You are so silly.
Nut, what a shock right?
All right, Scooter's first word is nut.
So let's take it apart, one sound at a time.
Do you hear the first sound?
N, good.
What's the next one?
A, and the last one?
T, n-u-t, nut, great job.
Oh, you're getting a round of applause from Scooter.
Good job, all right, What's our next word?
Okay, ready?
This is a tricky one.
The word is tree, tree, tree.
Okay, what do you hear first?
T, good, t, r, that's the R sound huh, t-r-ee.

All right, so I've been working on finding jokes that Scooter will think is funny and that you will enjoy.
So I have one, I have a great one today.
Are you ready?
You're not gonna believe it, it's a good one.
I'm really proud of this one, so I hope you like it.
Okay, you ready Scooter?
Okay, alright.
Hey Scooter, how do you get a squirrel to like you?
Do you know?
You act like a nut.
(laughs) What?
He says that's why we're friends.
'Cause I act like a nut.
Scooter, I think that was a good joke, don't you?
Yes, It was a good one, that is awesome.
All right, Mr. Scooter, it's time for us to look at our catch of the day.
Did you go and peek at the words?
Are they good ones?
Okay, so we're going to do our catch of the day.
That means you have to sit over there so that I can use our fish over here, okay?
Okay, don't go anywhere, you stay out of the trees.
All right, you stay right there, can you sit still?
Good job.
All right boys and girls, our catch of the day today is quite a catch, look at that.
Isn't that amazing?
Wow, we have a whole bunch of words today.
All right, so our catch of the day today, this word is index, index.
Now, our story today, we're gonna learn all about what an index is, but I want you to know a little bit about it before we get started.
An index is a part of the book that is near the back of the book and it tells the page numbers for specific topics.
So like, if you wanted to...
If the book was about squirrels and you wanted to know that they eat nuts, it might say nuts, and then the page number.
So you could go right to that page and see what kind of nuts they like to eat.
All right, let's look at the next word.
This fish says contents, contents.
The contents page, is near the front of the book.
So index is near the back, content is near the front and it lists the chapters and the page numbers, sometimes they call it the table of contents.
What?
Yes, you're right.
The index and the contents, they're similar, aren't they?
They tell us information and page numbers, good listening.
All right, let's look at this one.
This one says alike, alike.
Alike means very much the same or similar.
Like we are alike because we have two arms or two legs, that makes us alike, or there are other ways that we can be alike, and we're going to hear about that today in our story.
And then I have this last one, this one is glossary, glossary.
A glossary, you do know what this is you just maybe haven't heard this word before.
A glossary is a part of the book that gives the meanings of the word.
Kind of like a dictionary or words to know, but it's specific to just that story.
So it might have words like... You might find all of these words in the glossary to explain what they are, so that when you read the story, you understand what they're trying to say.
Pretty easy, right?
Right, great job, so let's review really quick.
We have index, contents, alike and glossary.
Those are the catch of the day words.
And today, boys and girls, we're going to read a story called We Are Alike, We are different.
We Are Alike, We Are Different.
Now, remember Mrs. Hammack's eyes need help, so am I'm gonna get the tools that help my eyes.
A lot of us need tools for our eyes, some people might need tools for their ears and they wear hearing aids.
Some people might need tools for their legs and they use braces or in a wheelchair.
It doesn't matter what tools we need, as long as we use them when we need them, that's what they're there for.
The story is called We Are Alike, We Are Different, by Janice Behrens.
Let's jump right in, shall we?
And see what we can learn.
Remember, this is the front cover of the book and the back cover, and look at the title page.
Look, they picked a different picture.
We have the title and the author's name.
Now, oh, I forgot an important part of the story.
This is a nonfiction story, nonfiction.
That means it's real, It's going to give us real information.
So it probably will look a little different than a storybook or a fiction, a story that's not a real story.
So right away, look, we see the table of contents and this is gonna help us know where information is in the story.
Isn't that cool, yeah.
So we can see this says, we are all people and that's gonna be on page four and five.
And this one says, we all say hello, that's gonna be on page 20 and 21.
Isn't that awesome?
Okay, let's get started.
We are all people, we are all alike, we are all people, we're all different too, we do not look the same.
So look how these are all people, but they all look different, isn't that great?
How we look.
We are all alike.
We all wear clothes, we wear different things.
One girl may wear a scarf over her head, another may wear a cowboy hat.
What do you wear?
What do you wear on your head?
You see, they all have different kinds of head coverings?
Yeah, so they're alike because they're all wearing hats but they're different because all the hats are different.
We are all alike, we all have skin.
Some people have lighter skin, some people have darker skin.
Every skin color is a beautiful color.
Look how beautiful their hands all look, oh, I love that.
Aren't you so glad we're different?
How boring would it be if we all looked exactly alike.
I'm so thankful that we are different.
We are alike, we have hair, you can have long hair or short hair.
You can have straight hair or curly hair.
You can have braids or spiked hair.
Hurray for hair.
How do you like to wear your hair?
Look, even the hair is even different colors, great.
Food and fun.
We are all alike, we all eat food.
We like to eat different things, some of us need to eat noodles with chopsticks, many of us like burgers, some of us like pickles.
What do you like to eat?
And there's a picture of chopsticks.
What do you think... Look, he's eating with the chopsticks, what do you... That looks kind of tricky, doesn't it?
Look at... Oh, and she's having a hamburger he's having vegetables and fruit and an apple, great job.
We're all alike, we all like to have fun.
People have fun in different ways.
Some play ball, some play jump rope, some play the tuba.
Have you ever seen a tuba before?
That's a great big horn.
What do you like to play?
Can you think of things you like to play?
Yes, I heard you, basketball is a popular one.
Getting around.
Now, look at this heading right here.
This is called the heading.
What do you think we will read about in this section?
Right, get how people move.
We are all alike, we all need to get around, we move in different ways.
Some of us walk on our own, some of us need help to move around.
We might use a wheelchair or he has some crutches here.
This person has a bicycle.
Is it wrong to need a wheelchair?
No, it's just different, right.
But we all need to use the tools that we need.
We are all different, we have different skin, we have different hair, we eat different foods, we move differently.
We are all alike too, we can all be friends.
We all say hello, we're all alike, we all use language, we speak many different languages.
We say hello in English, we say bonjour in French, we say marhaba in Arabic, we say ni hao in Chinese, we say jambo in Swahili and we say hola in Spanish.
Ooh, don't that sound pretty in your ears?
And then here are...
Here's the glossary.
Remember I told you words to know.
Chopsticks, and then it tells us what they are, clothes, hair, people, skin, tuba, wheelchair.
These are all the places, if you didn't know what one of those words meant, you could look.
And then here is the index that tells us...
If I wanna know about burgers, I'm gonna go to page 12.
Does that this book help you think about the way that people are alike and different?
It does me too.
So did you notice that it looked different because it's a non-fiction book, right?
What did you see?
Exactly, It gave us a table of contents.
They used real photographs, they talked about real things, right?
So that is one of the ways that you can tell when a book is fiction or nonfiction.
All right friends, let's take a look at our reading chart today.
It says non fiction text features.
All right, so we're gonna take a look at our book and we're gonna see if we can figure out how to write down what some of these things are.
You think we can do that?
I know, okay, all right.
So it says here, table of contents.
So if I open to the table of contents and you can see it there, you see?
All right, so what does the table of contents tell us?
Right, it shows us where each heading is, that's called a heading, let's look at that again.
So here is We Are All People, that's a heading.
See how it's kind of like a title, that's called a heading.
So it tells us where each heading can be found.
So it tells us right where to go, and it gives us the page number.
All right, so here's headings, we probably should have started with headings, right.
And what does a heading tell us?
So let's look, let me pick one.
Food and fun, what do you think that tells us about what we're gonna read?
Right, it tells us what that part of the book will be about.
Good job, great, all right.
Let's see.
You think we can do one more?
Let's try one more.
Do you remember what the glossary is?
Now, in our book, the glossary is called words to know, but it's the same thing.
Right.
It tells us the definitions.
So it gives us definitions of words in the story.
Great, wow, we're gonna skip this last one, just because I have a fun movement activity I wanna do with you.
But before we get to our movement activity, I have another... Yeah, I do.
I do, I have another joke, are you ready?
Okay, all right.
All right, Scooter are you ready?
Okay.
Scooter and boys and girls, why did the banana put on sunscreen?
You don't know?
Maybe you should think.
Why did the banana put on sunscreen?
Do you know boys and girls?
Do you know why he put on sunscreen?
Well, let me tell you, because he started to peel.
(laughs) That was a good one.
He didn't think it was a good one.
You didn't like that one?
I thought it was good.
Oh, he said keep trying.
Okay, I will, I'll keep trying.
Are you ready?
We're gonna play a game.
I'm gonna teach the boys and girls a new game, okay.
Okay, well I think though, for this game you probably should sit out because it's a little busy.
So come right here, you stay there and I'm gonna get my clipboard of fun, and we're gonna play a little game.
Now, in this game, or in this book, we talked about all the different ways that we are alike and that we are different.
And we're gonna play a moving game.
So wherever you are, stand up.
Okay, now listen to the directions, I'm gonna give you the instructions, and I'm gonna tell you a way to move.
And then you're gonna move like that until you hear this sound.
(bell rings) When you hear that sound, you're gonna freeze and then listen for the next direction.
Are you ready?
I think this is gonna be good.
Okay, let me put my clipboard of fun down and let's come over here.
All right, you ready for the first one?
All right, let's tiptoe, tiptoe, tiptoe, tiptoe, up on your tippy toes, tippy toe, tippy toe, tippy toe.
(bell rings) Freeze, you should be frozen.
Freeze like a statue.
Okay, all right, you're ready for the next direction?
All right, you're gonna hop, ready, go.
Two feet, you can hop back.
(bell rings) Freeze, how'd you do?
Oh, that was really good, you did... Are you noticing that everyone's doing what I said?
They're all hopping, but it still looks different, right?
We all move, that's alike, but we move in different ways.
That's different.
All right, let's try another one, are you ready?
Okay, this time, I'm gonna make it really tricky.
I want you to crawl.
What?
Yes, I want you to crawl.
Okay, so get down wherever you are, and ready, crawl.
Are you crawling?
Crawl some more.
(bell rings) Freeze, how'd you do?
Great job.
Wow, you are really good at this game.
All right, stand up for me.
Stretch your arms great big and wide and give yourselves a great big hug, you did excellent.
Boys and girls, I am so proud of you.
So I want you to think about something today, will you?
I want you to think about why it's important to appreciate how we're different.
It's okay If we're all different, but there are great things about being different that we can appreciate about one another.
I want you to think about how great it is that you can learn new things from somebody that's different than you.
I know I appreciate that my friend Lisa likes pickles because I don't.
So when we have lunch together, she can eat all of my pickles, and I'm so glad that we're different like that.
I bet there are great things that you can think of too.
I'd love it if you wrote them down and send me a picture right here to Camp so that I can see what you came up with.
I can't wait to see the things that you appreciate that are different about the people around you.
'Cause it's gonna make us appreciate each other and be kind right?
That's what we need to do.
I hope you will come back tomorrow.
We're gonna talk some more about community and just have a great time with Camp.
Scooter will be here, I hope you will be too.
