Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- Hello little learners, welcome back to our classroom.
Did you have a fun first day of school?
I hope you did, my name is Miss Lara.
Can you tell me your name?
I'm so happy that you made it back today.
Today is Friday, which means it's the end of our learning week here together.
So let's start off with our good morning song with our mail person, Miss Maria.
Say hello, and then we'll get on to what we're gonna do for our day, ready?
♪ Good morning ♪ ♪ Good morning ♪ ♪ It's a sunshine kind of day ♪ ♪ Come join Miss Lara for some learning and some play ♪ ♪ Will we sing a song?
♪ ♪ Of course we will ♪ ♪ Make our brain strong ♪ ♪ Like super strong ♪ ♪ So come a long ♪ ♪ Yes, come on friend ♪ ♪ For some learning and some play ♪ All right Ms. Maria, what do we have going on today?
Woo, so much fun, I can't wait to tell them.
Let me put you down so I can.
So all this week we've been learning about the classroom, which is the place that you might be enjoying every morning now.
We've been learning about classroom rules and maybe feeling a little bit nervous because you have to go to school now, meet new friends, meet a new teacher.
Although by now, you know the secret.
School is fun and your teachers love you.
So we're gonna continue that today and learn about some grownups that want to come to school too.
We're gonna do some writing about classroom rules, and we're gonna finish off our portfolio project, so that you have a place to store your things or just a reminder of who you were on your first day of school.
Are you ready to get started?
Okay, well I have a little song for you 'cause we have to get ready to go to school first.
So do you remember this is an action song?
That means you have to do some actions while you sing with me.
So let's review those actions now.
The first one is to climb.
So get your hands out and when you climb, you go up like you're climbing a rope.
Ooh, don't go too far up.
And then you're going to hurry and get ready like this.
And look ahead for school.
And then of course, you're gonna buckle your seatbelt, nice and tight.
And then you're gonna bounce up and down.
When it's already time to ride that bus.
You ready to sing with me?

Grownups can't come to school, can they?
Just teachers.
Is that a allowed?
Is that allowed?
Can grownups come to school?
Love happy kids.
I'm so glad you're happy.
I think miss Maria left me a book about some grownups that want to come to school too.
Oh, look what it says right on the front cover.
It says, "Sorry, grownups, you can't go to school".
At least not kids school.
We have a grownup school called college where all of you are gonna to go.
So this book was written by Christina Geist, that's the author.
And you'll remember the author writes the words.
It was illustrated by Tim Bowers, he drew the pictures.
Now let's look at the front cover, we have a school bus.
That's what we get into when go to school.
And two kids with backpacks and two parents with backpacks trying to go to school with the kids.
They even have rulers and pencils.
Let's find out what happens what they try to go to school.
Little dog, do dogs go to school?
Look he has on a backpack with the bone on it, silly.
All right, here we go.
It seemed like any other school day.
But as soon as Lady and her brother, Buddy were dressed and eating breakfast at the kitchen table, things started to get a little weird.
So there they are eating cereal now.
Eating breakfast before you go to school is so important.
You remember my tip, because school mornings are really hard pack something, a little banana or something to have in the car ride while you get to school if you don't have time for breakfast.
"Goodmorning," said Mom, "check out my new backpack.
It has four zippers and a secret pocket.
I'm wearing it to school."
Sorry Mom, you can't go to school.
Only kids and teachers, really, only kids and teachers.
Look at her face, she's surprised.
Hey, y'all, Dad, look at my new high top second.
Tied them all by myself, I'm wearing them to school.
Sorry Dad, you can't go to school.
Only kids and teachers, only kids, teachers.
Just then the doorbell rang.
It was Grandma and Grandpa and Bow Wow.
And they were all wearing backpacks.
Sorry, grownups, you can't go to school.
Only kids and teachers, I said, only kids, teachers.
"Ruff, Ruff, Ruff, Ruff, Ruff", barked Bow Wow, "Ruff, Ruff, Ruff, Ruff, Ruff".
Sorry Bow Wow, you can't go to school.
How could you say no to a dog in a backpack?
That's inhumane.
Only kids and teachers, only kids and teachers.
"It's not fair," yelled the grownups, we want to go to morning meeting.
We want to play ABC games."
They are with the alphabet.
and read stories on the cozy carpet.
We want to do science experiments.
They are experimenting with a portion.
We want to play with our friends at recess.
Look at that they wanna play ball, look at grandma doing a high kick, kicking the ball over.
"We're sorry," said Lady, "It's just the way it is."
"Yeah," said Buddy, "somethings are for you.
And some things are for us, it's just the way it is."
How do you think that grownups are feeling?
Let's look at their face, ooh, Dad's face, has his mouth all down turning like this.
Do you think he's feeling happy or sad?
Yeah, Sad.
I mean, Mom's sad too.
She really wants to go to school, but you can pick us up at the end of the day and you can even take us to the playground on the way home.
And we'll tell you all about school at the family dinner tonight.
Don't forget tomorrow we can even go to work with you.
Oh look at the kids they're dressed up.
Yeah, grownups have to go to a boring, old work.
Huh, Booo.
We don't get recess, we definitely don't do science experiments.
We get to do other fun things, but they're they are having fun.
Would be so nice to be able to go to school again.
I loved it so much, I hope that you liked this book.
What was your favorite part?
I liked the part where the dog was begging to go to school and he had a little backpack on.
Now, remember if you read and love books like this, you can check more out on the Soar app and at your local library.
Now, right now I'd like us to review our classroom rules because for the first two weeks of school, really, that's all you have to learn.
What to do in a classroom.
Things that you probably shouldn't do to stay safe.
So we're gonna do some writing about that right now.
So let's go over to our writing place, alright?
Thank you Ms. Hammock for setting this up for us.
Okay, Let's see.
Right here it says classroom rules.
Now what's one rule that we learned about.
Remember, in our book from a dinosaur, the T-Rex Penelope Rex.
She was doing something with her classmates while she was eating them and David was doing something too.
I think one rule should be no biting.
So I'm gonna draw a big no David smile.
Now remember he had sharp teeth, no laughing at my writing, and drawing is writing too.
So no, David he-- Remember bit, and was playing with this food and Penelope Rex was eating all kinds of things like a little boy, I think his name was Michael until what happened, the little fish that used to be in the classroom, bit back and Penelope Rex did not like that.
So I'm just gonna color this since you can really see the teeth, here we go.
You can feel free to write along with me.
And if you're thinking miss Laura, I don't know how to write letters.
And I don't know how to write words.
Well guess what drawing is writing too, because writing is just a form of communication.
You trying to tell other people what you mean.
And you can do that with drawing.
Writing with letters is a little quicker.
So no biting, or we can say in a positive way, keep hands, feet and objects to yourself.
So let's write that rule right in the-- Keep keep hands, keep hands, feet feet, and objects to self, and objects to yourself to yourself, here we go.
That's a big one.
Especially when you're in line, behind somebody and you see someone with beautiful hair and you want to reach out and touch it, don't, keep your hands to yourself.
All right, what's the next thing that we need to do?
Ah, that's something positive.
What's one thing you get to do when you go to school, have fun, that's right.
You have to love and have fun at school.
Some I'm gonna draw a little heart.
Then I'm gonna write the words, have fun.
I'm gonna write these in proper case, which means I'm gonna write like grownups, right?
Hey, but if you're following along, you can feel free to write in all uppercase letters, HAVE FUN.
That's right, have lots of fun.
What's another thing that you might want to follow when you're in the classroom rules.
What about your voice?
Are you allowed to yell in the classroom?
Probably not.
Especially when the teacher's reading a book, right?
When you are inside the classroom on a rug, which might look like this and might have different color squares, let's see, like that.
And you're sitting down, you're gonna want to use a level one voice.
Remember we practiced our level voices?
Level zero is this, level one was a whisper, level two is your presentation voice and level three is really loud.
And level four is when you're outside, you're gonna be at a level-- Zero to let the teacher have a turn or a one, or maybe even a two if you're talking to someone next to you, while three if you're presenting actually.
But when you're outside on the playground, let's draw a little swing set here, swing set.
You get to have a level four voice.
You get to be really loud.
That's your time to sing your favorite song and play your favorite game, whatever it is that you wanna do.
What's another classroom rule that we might need to follow.
Let's think.
You would have to, okay let's see.
How about, when it's dismissal time, remember we talked about when it was time to go.
I didn't think about this one.
This one's really important, when it was time to say, good bye, you would have to wait for your teacher to dismiss you, right?
You can't just run out the door.
And actually if it's school time, you're gonna wanna to stay in your classroom.
That's for your own safety, so wait for dismissal.
Let's write that, wait for dismissal.
Don't escape, all of these things are for your safety.
And I'm sure that you can think of many more with your teacher.
Like how to line up, when you're in the lunch room, don't cut in front of people.
The list goes on and on and on.
So I hope that you get a chance to talk about these with your classroom teacher or even your family at home.
What are their rules?
Now, right now we're going to go over to the project place.
So we're gonna finish up our portfolio or a memory book and of a drawing.
And then we might have a little time to do another little activity that I brought over.
So let's walk over there.
Can you count how many steps it'll take?
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
Did you say eight?
You were close, Okay, so here's what we did yesterday and it's all kind of dried up.
We did our name in tissue paper and then we did kind of a background and finger painting.
And if you remember I did a finger painting with our primary colors, red, yellow, and blue and I also used the scraper.
So you can see what that looks like here.
The last thing we need to do is do a drawing of ourself.
So here's a drawing I did of myself, I have much shorter hair.
Like this, and then we're gonna put it right on a background like this.
So we can save and have a memory of what we looked like.
So we're gonna do that together.
So if you wanna do it with me, bring out your paper and you're gonna need a black marker.
That's what I have here, very simple today.
So the first thing you're gonna draw is your head, that's right.
Now, when I'm in the classroom, I get a lot of students who draw their hands coming out of their head.
No, that's not what it's like.
And that spatial awareness, it's something that you have to develop as time goes on.
So we like to practice.
So here's our head, and what kinds of things does our head have?
Let's think, what are these things that help us hear?
That's right there, your ears.
How many of you have?
Let's see, one and two, so we can draw our ears.
Now you remember my rule.
Whenever I draw myself some ears, I've got to draw earrings and today they're gonna be star earrings, hanging off of my ear.
What do you think?
What other things might I include?
How about my eyes?
I have two eyes that help me see, so let me draw those eyes, they're are gonna be kind of ovally, like that.
I have like a little round part inside my eyes, don't I?
Just like that, how about this on top of my eyes?
What is this?
That's an eyebrow, that's right.
I'm gonna draw my eyebrows here.
And this thing?
A nose, helps you, smell delicious things like cupcakes in the oven.
One last thing, what could I be missing?
My mouth, but my husband, I think he would say, just leave it off for a while, you wanna include it.
All right, let's do a big smile.
'Cause I love to smile, it's my favorite.
There, there's me.
what else am I missing?
Hair that's right, although I am a beautiful bald person here.
Let's do some hair.
Now do you flowing hair like this all the way down.
I can be like super long hair like this.
And then I need something to attach my head to my body.
You know what this part of your body is called?
Your neck, so let's do a neck.
There we go, and I might turn it around a little for this part, some shoulders and maybe I'll do her dress some arms, color.
And if I wanted to do a dress, I could kind of make buttons going down.
I can draw me in my crazy outfits, huh.
And then let's see, this is where I'm at so far.
Now, remember if I go too fast, just hit pause, and then you can slow down and do it at your own pace, if you're watching at a place where you can slow things down, like on YouTube.
Now I need hands and my hands have fingers.
Let's count how many, one, two, three, four, five.
And I even have fingernails, so let me do my five fingers.
One, two, three, four, five, One, two, three, four, five.
And then I'm gonna do some nails.
That would be nice to have those really long nails.
And they look kind of like claws.
But that's okay, you know what they are.
Then of course, some feet and maybe some shoes, I'll do high heel shoes cause I always wanna make myself a little taller.
There we go, I close of my hair.
There I am, what else should I add?
Should I make my dress polka dot dress?
You can always do that to add more details.
Now, at this point, when you're finished with your drawing, you might wanna add some color to it.
But I'm not gonna do that today, but then what you're gonna do is you're going to cut it out.
And it's really fun to see in a couple of years, when you go to third grade, fourth grade, fifth grade, even sixth grade or college, what you used to draw yourself as.
I always used to get the best pictures.
Now cut all around your drawing like this, all around, all around.
And then you'll use this drawing to put in front of your prepared paper that we made yesterday like this.
Now like I said, I already had one here, so I'm gonna tape it on today, but you can use glue to glue it on, and then parents, what I would do is I would laminate it and I would actually use this as a front cover of a memory book.
So you can make a memory book with paperbacks as pages.
You can use regular photo album, but having something that the children have made and put their hands on, that's kind of, you can't buy that.
You'll have it forever, so there it is.
My little--.
It would look something like this.
Like I said, just kind of put it in some lamination for the hard with the tissue, but it will work and you'll have this as a beginning to you know, a good school year.
Make sure you put the date down here and you'll have a nice little memory book cover.
So I hope that you try this activity at home.
Now it is the end of our week.
And it's your first week of school, at least for many of you.
And you may be starting school for the first time.
So I'd love to hear how it went.
Send me a picture of your first day of school and I'll show it here to all of our friends so we can share.
