Good morning Super Readers!
- Good morning!
Good morning Super Readers.
Thank you for joining us in our Valley PBS classroom.
I'm Mrs. Nix.
- I'm Mrs. Hammack - and I'm Mrs. Vang.
- This is a place for us to learn, practice and grow - Our brains - To become even stronger readers, writers and thinkers.
So let's get started by warming up our brains with some - Ear training - called daily phonemic awareness.
- Okay, so today awesome readers, We're gonna go through and we're gonna practice listening to some sounds and we're gonna listen specifically for those vowel sounds and we're gonna switch out or substitute the vowel sound.
And I want you to put in place the -ow sound.
So whatever vowel we hear, we wanna substitute it with -ow.
So let's practice, all right?
- Okay.
- We have the word hay.
Hay.
How many sounds do we hear in hay?
Let's do it.
H- - Ay We have two sounds.
H- -ay.
That's our, -ay is our vowel sound.
We're gonna substitute it and we're gonna put in -ow - What's our new word?
- H- -ow.
How.
- See how we did that?
- Ooh, that's a tricky game.
- It is kind of a tricky game.
I think Mrs. Vang always calls it what's my new word?
- Oh, that's a good one.
- So here we go.
We're gonna do it with the word coach - Coach.
- How many sounds do we hear?
Help me out.
- C- -oa - ch Coach.
- C- -oa -ch.
Where's our vowel?
- That's the -oa - In the middle.
- Right in the middle.
- Okay.
Now I want us to change -oa to -ow.
What's our new word?
- C- -ou -ch Couch couch.
Nice - Great job.
All right.
Last one.
How about this word?
If we had the word den.
Den.
How many sounds do we hear?
Do it with me.
- D- -e -n - Den.
- Where's the vowel?
- In the middle again.
- Eh, Eh.
- Right?
So let's put in the -ow.
- Okay.
- So D- -ow -n Down, down, down, like sit down on the couch.
- Nice.
- All right.
Excellent job.
So again, that's something you can always practice at home and you can manipulate with all kinds of little things.
If you had little counters or beans or little toy cars practicing hearing your sounds will help you to become a better reader and writer.
- That's right.
- All right.
You know what else is super fun to do?
We love to get a little boogie going on.
Yes.
And you know what?
I think we're gonna need a little bit of help today.
Oh, pushing our button.
What do we think?
- Oh, probably.
- Probably.
Okay.
So I'm gonna run over and I'm gonna start our music and then we'll get started.
Does that sound great?
- Yeah.
Sounds good.
- Let's do it.
- Get ready.

- How fun.
- And that is the perfect song and dance for today because all this week we're gonna be talking about things we can hear.
- Ooh, it's all about sounds.
- Yep, it's gonna be good.

This week, we are focused on our ow sound.
Just like we practiced earlier with Mrs. Nix.
Did you guys hear that?
That's the sound we're gonna be learning this week.
So this week we are focused on the -ow sound.
Can you say that with me?
Ow.
That's right.
Just like when you get hurt and you go Ow!

Now remember to become great readers, you need to know how to read and write all these different sounds.
And you also need to know your high frequency words.
So let's see what high frequency words we're gonna be learning this week with Mrs. Hammack.
- Okay, Super Readers.
We have six words this week.
Let's take a look at what they are and then we'll focus in on a couple of them.

I hope you'll practice early and color by writing 'em and practicing spelling them.
I have another way that I'd like to share with you that you can practice your high frequency words and I'm gonna need a helper friend.
So Mrs. Nix, will you help us?
- Of course, Mrs. Hammack.

So today we're going to swat a word.

And then we have to turn around and find it on our board.
Are you ready?
Okay.
- All right.
So there's our word.
Are you ready Mrs. Hammock?
- Oh, I'm ready.
- The word is - Color.
- Okay.

It's just a really fun way to practice and get your eyes trained for those high frequency words so that, you know 'em (snaps fingers) automatic as fast as you know your name.
This week we're gonna hear a story called The Squeaky Bed.
Remember I told you it was all about sounds.
While you're listening to this story, I want you to see if you can ask yourself any questions and then we'll see if we can answer them.
See if as you listen, there are questions that pop up that might help you engage in the story and be thinking about what's happening in the story.
And then we'll come back and talk some more about it.
Here we go.
- The Squeaky Bed, a tale from Puerto Rico.
What sounds can you hear at night before you go to sleep?
Once there was a little girl who lived on a farm with her Mama, her Papa, a cat, a dog, a pig and a horse.
The girl loved the farm.
She loved her mama and she loved her Papa.
And she loved all of her animals.
The only thing the girl didn't love was the loud noises.
She would jump when she heard the rooster crow in the morning.
She would cry when her mother cleaned the house with the vacuum cleaner and she would run and hide in the closet when thunder came.
And of course the greater the volume, the more each noise upset her.
For the little girl's birthday, her Papa made her a splendid brass bed.
The brass was smooth to the touch and Mama had polished it until it was as shiny as gold.
The little girl was delighted.
That night, Mama and Papa tucked her in to her beautiful brass bed and wished her sweet dreams.
The little girl closed her eyes.
Then she heard something squeaky.
Squeak!
Went her brand new bed.
She sat up and the noise was even louder.
Squeak, squeak, squeak.
Waaah she cried.
And when no one came to her rescue, she cried even harder.
Waah Waah Mama and Papa came running.
This bed is squeaky, cried the little girl.
Do not be so nervous our little love said Mama and Papa.
A squeaky bed will not harm you but perhaps our kind cat will make you feel better.
So they brought in the cat and put her on the bed.
Thank you Mama and Papa said the little girl.
She kissed them each on the cheek and petted the cat.
Then she closed her eyes.
Again, the bed went squeak, squeak, squeak.
Waaah cried the little girl.
Meow, meow screeched the cat.
Papa and Mama came running.
Do not cry little girl.
Do not meow kind cat, they said.
A squeaky bed will not harm you but perhaps our brave dog will make you feel safer.
So they brought in the dog.
Oh, thank you, Mama.
Thank you Papa, said the girl and she turned over to go to sleep.. And again, the bed went squeak, squeak, squeak.
- Waaah waah waaah cried the little girl.
Meow, meow screeched the cat.
Woof, woof barked the dog and again, Mama and Papa came running.
Do not cry little girl.
Do not screech kind cat.
Do not bark brave dog, they said.
It is only a squeaky bed.
And a little squeak will not harm you.
Waah, waah, meow, meow, ruff, ruff answered the girl, the cat and the dog.
So Mama said, I know just what you need.
Our beautiful big pig will distract you from the disturbing squeak.
So Mama went and got the pig.
She put him right on the bed next to the little girl and the cat and the dog.
Then Mama and Papa said good night.
But as soon as Mama and Papa left the big bed began to squeak.
Squeak, squeak, squeak.
Waah waah cried the little girl.
Meow, meow screeched the cat.
Woof Ruff barked the dog.
Oink, oink squealed the pig.
And again, Mama and Papa came running.
Hush, hush said Mama to the little girl.
It's just a little noise.
Try not to let your delicate senses get the better of you.
But just in case they do, added Papa.
We will bring in our trustworthy horse.
She will make you feel secure.
So they went to the barn to get the horse.
They led the horse into the room and told her to get onto the bed, which the horse did.
Now you will have nothing to fear said Mama and Papa as they turned off the lights.
Squeak, squeak, squeak went the bed even louder than before.
Waah, waah cried the girl, then each of the animals joined in.
Meow, ruff, oink, neigh.
As they ran to the room, Mama and Papa held their ears because the noise was so loud.
Suddenly a crash stopped all the noises.
The bed had collapsed!
That night, the girl, the cat, the dog, the pig and even the horse slept with Mama and Papa.
The next day, Papa made the little girl a brand new big brass bed and Mama polished it.
Yippee!
Shouted the little girl as she jumped on the bed and bounced up and down.
Squeak, squeak, squeak went the bed.
Oh, no said Mama and Papa.
- So did you enjoy that?
Did you figure out what the squeaky squeaky?
Are you afraid of a squeaky bed?
Hmm.
Let's go through and let's practice retelling our story that we heard today.
You wanna retell with me?
All right.
Let's do it.
- No, I wanna retell with you.
- Ricky.
Hi, Retell Ricky.
How are you today?
- I'm good.
I love to retell, can I retell?
- I would love for you to help us retell.
I was just talking with our Super Readers about retelling and I bet you would be a great help today.
- Mm hmm - All right.
- Are you ready?
- Let's do it.
So where do we wanna start?
- I start with the first picture.
- With the first.
All right, let's go.
- Okay.
Well, so, so there, once with this girl she lived in the farm and she loved the farm and she loved the animals, but you know what she didn't like?
- What?
- She didn't like any of the noises.
So her Mama and her Papa bought her a brass bed for her birthday.
- Oh, that's right.
A brass bed.
- And look at the next picture.
Look at her.
Oh my goodness.
And the new bed made, made a screech screech.
And she didn't like it.
So the mom put a cat on to make her feel better and they could still hear the noise.
And so, so the mom put the dog on and then they were all scared still and guess what?
And then, and then all of a sudden the cat started meowing and then the dog started ruff ruff ruff.
That was a good dog, wasn't it?
And then, and then they put the pig on and and all of a sudden it was like super loud in there.
And then guess what?
They brought a horse in!
And that didn't help.
And, and then, and then everybody started making all kinds of noise and then the bed, guess what?
The bed crashed.
And then all the noises stopped and the girl's happy.
And then guess what?
They slept in the bed.
They slept on the ground And the mom, the dad bought her a new bed.
A new brass bed!
- I know.
So what do you think is gonna happen next?
I don't even know.
- I don't know why they were scared.
That sound.
That was my question.
Why are you so scared of that squeaky sound?
- I don't either, but you know what?
I really appreciate that you went through and were able to retell our whole story cause that's a great strategy when we're learning how to read and to practice being able to retell so great job Retell.
All right, you know another thing that's a really good and helpful thing to do when we're talking about reading is to talk a little bit about writing.
And today we have the writing prompt What sounds can you hear at night before you go to sleep?
So you could start your paragraph off with something as simple as I can hear many sounds at night before I go to sleep.
But what kinds of sounds do you hear?
Do you have a squeaky bed or maybe you could hear the crickets outside or maybe when a siren goes by.
You could add to this and I'd love to hear it.
Now I'm gonna kick it over to one of our awesome readers who's gonna share a story and we'll see back here in just a second.
- Hi, my name is Bogie and I'm a senior.
Today I wanna talk to you guys about a book I've been reading.
