Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) - [All] Good morning, Super Readers!
- Thank you for joining us in our Valley PBS classroom.
I'm Mrs. Nix - I'm Mrs. Hammack - And I'm Mrs. Vang - This is a place for us to learn, practice, and... - [All] Grow our brains!
- To become even stronger readers, writers, and thinkers.
So let's get started by warming up our brains with some - Ear training - Called - [All] "Daily phonemic awareness" - Okay, so this week or today, super readers, here's what we're gonna do.
It's Friday, right?
Woo hoo!
We're going to go through and we're gonna practice something called "phoneme deletion" Well, deletion kind of sounds like the word delete.
So we're gonna take away a sound.
So for example, if we have the word, "boil" What sounds do we hear?
- [All] B, Oi, L. - Boil.
What if I take away the B, what's my word?
- [All] Oil.
- Oh, okay.
- See how that works?
Okay, all right.
So let's practice another one.
- Okay.
- How about if I am... - Now and I can take away sounds wherever I choose.
So I'm gonna take this one away from the end.
How about this one?
- C, Oi, L. Coil.
- Okay.
- Take away the L. What do we have left?
- [All] C, Oi.
Coi.
- Did you see it?
- Got it!
- Nice, okay.
Let's start with this word, coins.
Coins.
- [All] C, Oi, N, S. Coins.
- Now, I could take away the S, and what's my word?
- [All] C, Oi, N. - Coin - Okay.
- Did you see it?
- Great.
So those are all different things that you can practice when you are playing with words and sounds maybe in the car or standing in line.
But you could also maybe get the wiggles.
- Oh yes, totally.
- All right.
- And I think I know this one!
- Let's get our wiggles out today.
- Stand up and join us.
- Absolutely, let's do it.
- Time to be a volcano.
♪ I am standing very still ♪ ♪ Is it a volcano or is it a hill ♪ ♪ It starts to shake and it cannot stop ♪ ♪ It's a volcano ♪ ♪ It's a volcano ♪ ♪ It's a volcano ♪ ♪ It's a volcano ♪ ♪ It's a volcano ♪ ♪ And it's going to blow ♪ ♪ It ♪ ♪ Down ♪ ♪ Boom ♪ ♪ I am standing very still ♪ ♪ Is it a volcano, or is it a hill ♪ ♪ It starts to shake and it cannot stop ♪ ♪ It's a volcano ♪ ♪ It's a volcano ♪ ♪ It's a volcano ♪ ♪ It's a volcano ♪ ♪ It's a volcano ♪ ♪ And it's going to blow ♪ ♪ It ♪ ♪ Down ♪ ♪ Boom ♪ - It's a volcano!
- So much fun.
- I love it, I love it on Fridays.
- So much fun.
- Me too.
- Okay, I think they're ready.
We're gonna go and practice our phonics.
- Okay, see you later guys.
- Okay super readers.
Now, remember, this week is a review week.
That just means we are practicing all the sounds that we've already learned to make our brains, that's right!
Super smart and strong, right?
We want that brain to be super smart and strong.
So let's see what sound we are going to be reviewing today.
Today I have the boy card.
The boy card says OY Good job, I heard you, OY.
Now if you notice on my boy card, there's two different ways that I can spell that OY sound.
The first way is O I, good job.
O I says, Oi!
and O Y says, Oy!
Good job.
And that line in front, remember it just means that that's where a consonant will go.
So OY will have that consonant before it whereas the O I and Oi can go in the beginning, middle, or at the end.
Because remember, OY has two different ways that we can spell that sound.
Now, let's practice reading and blending and writing and building words with that OY sound.
Should we call our friends to come help us?
Okay, let's call them!
Tina!
Rita!
- Hello!
- Here they are.
- Happy Friday!
- Yes, good morning, good morning!
- Happy Friday, are you guys ready?
I know it's been a long week.
I know you guys have been reading and practicing and making your brain super strong.
Okay, let's practice reading words with that OY sound.
You guys ready?
- [Tina And Rita] Yeah.
- Okay, ready?
- First word says - [Tina And Rita] B, OY, boy.
- There's a boy right there.
- Yeah.
- Good job.
- Let's keep going.
- [Tina And Rita] C, O, I, N. Coin.
- It's a coin!
- Yeah, like a penny!
- That's right!
Okay, keep going, you guys are doing a great job.
- [Tina And Rita] P, Oi, N, T, point.
- Oh, you're doing that right now!
- I'm pointing, aren't I?
Good job, good thinking!
Okay, last one.
Let's see if you guys can read this.
- [All] J, Oy, Ful, joyful!
- Good job, joyful.
I was just gonna say you guys read that beautifully!
Because "ful" is actually a suffix.
Did you guys know that?
It's added on the end of a word to change its meaning.
You guys did that beautifully.
I'm so joyful that you guys are learning.
- Yay!
- Awesome.
- Okay, but can you guys help me build a word?
- Oh yeah.
- Are you guys ready?
- How about if I wanna spell the word "spoil"?
Like my fridge broke so all the food in the fridge was spoiled.
But help me spell the word spoil.
- So it has that beginning blend, so S P. - Good job.
- Yup, I heard that too!
- Good.
- And Oi, S, P, oi.
- Which one?
- It's not at the end.
The Oi is not at the end, so it's in the middle.
It's not the end of a syllable either.
Spoil.
Spoil, so it's going to be O I.
- Yup, I agree!
- Good thinking.
- I love how you explained your thinking, Tina.
- S, P, oi, L. - Good job.
- So spoil is spelled S P O I L. - And there's oil in the middle of spoil!
- There you go, good eye!
Did you guys see that?
Oh, you guys are so good, And that's how I can tell you guys have been practicing.
Okay, I'm going to have my super readers at home help me read this sentence.
I'm going to have you guys go and continue reading and I'll see you guys back here.
How about next week?
- Okay bye!
- Sounds good!
- Bye bye!
- Okay super readers.
Now it's your turn.
Help read this sentence.
And as you're reading, I want you guys to think about how many words you can read with that OY sound.
Are you guys ready?
Okay, let me get my reading finger ready, helping me read, and "The boy lost his voice from shouting."
Good, did you guys read it?
Boy, voice, and shout, shouting.
Good job, now let's continue learning and let's learn some of our high frequency words with Mrs. Hammack.
- Okay super readers.
Let's review our review words.
Here we go.
Thought, right, through, knew, above and sure.
Alright, today we are focusing on the word above.
Above.
Another word that we just need to lock into our memory.
A B O V E, above.
Let's take a look at a sentence.
You ready?
The stars hmm are so beautiful.
The stars above are so beautiful.
I hope you're taking time to practice these tricky high frequency words so that you can get them locked into your memory as fast as you know your name.
And now we're gonna listen to a story called "Once Upon a Baby Brother".
I hope you enjoy it!
- [Narrator] Once Upon a Baby Brother by Sarah Sullivan.
Pictures by Tricia Tusa.
Essential question, how do people get along?
Read about a sister who finds a way to get along with her baby brother.
From the day she could talk, Lizzie loved to tell stories.
Tall ones, true ones, funny ones, sad ones.
Lizzie loved them all.
She entertained the people in her mother's office.
"And the little girl grew up to be president and brought her parents to live with her in the White House."
She made up fairy tales to share with her father during their hikes up Mount Tilapia.
After slaying dragons in the forest the princess gave a surprise birthday party for the king.
She spun yarns for big George.
The beautiful girl and her handsome dog, took a rocket to the moon and discovered a new planet in the solar system!
Everything was fine until her little brother Marvin came along.
When Lizzie tried to tell a story before breakfast her mother said, "Not now, dear.
Marvin has a dirty diaper."
When she tried to tell her father a story after dinner he said, "Maybe later Lizzie, it's time for Marvin's bath."
Luckily for Lizzie, big George still loved her stories.
He would listen for hours.
Stories about dogs were his favorite.
The faithful Labrador rescued his master from the storm tossed seas.
"Arf!
Arf!"
When Lizzie started second grade, she discovered that her teacher, Miss Pennyroyal loved stories too.
All the kids in Miss Pennyroyal's class got to write stories and take turns reading them out loud.
The brave young girl rescued her teacher from the alligator pit.
Lizzie loved Miss Pennyroyal's second grade.
At home, Marvin loved his big sister, Lizzie.
He helped her make her bed.
He helped her brush her teeth.
He even shared his oatmeal.
Lizzie couldn't wait to get to school every morning.
At school, Miss Pennyroyal taught her students how to create interesting characters.
"Think about what makes your character different from everybody else."
she said.
"And describe that in your stories."
Easy peasy, thought Lizzie.
She got out her Princess Merriweather pencil.
While the other kids brainstormed, Lizzie started writing.
She wrote all through recess.
She was still writing while the other kids ate lunch.
"Can I go first, please?"
Lizzie asked, when it was time to share stories out loud.
"There's only one creature with footprints like this Captain."
"You don't mean..." "I'm afraid so sir, the Yeti is on the rampage again."
"Nice to see you using those new vocabulary words" said Miss Pennyroyal.
"Thank you" said Lizzie The next day, while Lizzie was at school, Marvin found a tube of golden glitter glue in Lizzie's desk drawer.
He made golden glitter swirls all over her favorite stuffed bear, Sebastian.
Lizzie was not amused.
"Big sisters need to be patient" said Lizzie's mother.
"Babies can't help making messes" said Lizzie's father.
Lizzie curled up in her bedroom with her imagination notebook and wrote a new story.
Once there was a beautiful princess who lived in a castle by the sea.
She made her parents very happy.
Then the ugly prince was born.
He cried all the time and made lots of messes.
So the beautiful princess banished the ugly prince to a desert island.
"This castle is getting way too crowded," she told her trusty steed.
Lizzie was very happy to go to school the next day The kids in Miss Pennyroyal's class were still writing stories about interesting characters.
Lizzie had tons of ideas.
It was hard to find time to write them all down.
Run for your lives!
It's Marvinosaurus!
Marvin's the nastiest pirate that ever sailed the sea.
Watch your fingers.
There's a Marvin fish circling below.
"I don't believe I've ever heard of a Marvin fish."
said Miss Pennyroyal.
"It must be very rare."
"Oh, it is" said Lizzie.
"You hardly ever see one."
On Friday, Lizzie's mother announced she was taking Marvin to visit grandma.
"I hope you don't miss your little brother too much."
she said.
"No, Marvin?"
Lizzie was thrilled!
After spaghetti for dinner, she and her father played a long game of checkers.
The next afternoon, Lizzie sharpened a whole box of pencils.
She dusted the furniture in her Princess Merriweather magic castle.
She rearranged the stuffed animals on her bed 12 times.
But something was missing.
At school, Miss Pennyroyal announced a new project.
"Now that we know about creating characters, we're going to write our own comic books," she said.
"Everyone needs to think of a character who will have lots of adventures."
Lizzie took out her Princess Merriweather pencil.
She doodled.
She stared out the window.
For the first time, she couldn't think of a single idea.
That night while Lizzie's father worked on a sales report for his meeting, Lizzie tried to work on her comic book.
She drew stars on the cover of her imagination notebook.
She stared at a liver shaped spot on the ceiling.
She even cleaned out her sock drawer.
"Once in a far off galaxy," she wrote.
And then nothing.
The next day at school, the kids in Miss Pennyroyal's class turned in their comic book projects.
Everyone except Lizzie.
"Remember, the deadline is the day after tomorrow!"
said Miss Pennyroyal.
"I know."
Lizzie moaned.
"Maybe you need fresh inspiration," said Miss Pennyroyal "Maybe," said Lizzie.
She chewed on the end of her Princess Merriweather pencil.
"It was a dark and stormy night," she wrote and then nothing.
At home, Lizzie looked for inspiration.
She listened to music, and drew pictures on blank sheets of paper.
She reread her favorite fairy tales.
She studied the comics in the Sunday paper, nothing helped.
"I'll never think of a character for my comic book," Lizzie moaned.
Summarize, what did Lizzie do for inspiration?
Summarize what she did.
She went downstairs for a glass of juice.
"Mug worts," said the chrysanthemums.
"Marvin?"
said Lizzie.
"When did you get home?"
"Ziff wizzle!"
Said Marvin.
Then he knocked over Lizzie's juice.
"Oh, Marvin!"
said Lizzie.
"Loops!"
said Marvin.
Lizzie thought about Miss Pennyroyal's instructions.
Interesting characters, lots of adventures, hmm?
Lizzie carried her Princess Merriweather pencil upstairs.
She wrote until bedtime.
And while she was brushing her teeth.
She was still writing during recess the next day.
"Is your comic book ready to turn in?"
asked Miss Pennyroyal.
"Not quite," said Lizzie "I need to show it to someone at home first!"
"As long as you turn it tomorrow," said Miss Pennyroyal.
While her mother cooked dinner, Lizzie pulled Marvin into her lap.
"Listen to this," she said "The amazing adventures of Marvin with big George, the wonder dog!
"Run for your lives!"
yelled the mayor.
"Goo, goo!"
"Aliens have landed.
They're taking over the city!"
Out of the city swooped the Amazing Marvin with big George, the wonder dog.
Marvin sprayed the tiny villains with paralyzing purple slime.
Soon all was peaceful in the city again.
"Yay, Marvin!"
the people shouted.
The mayor gave Marvin the key to the city.
"Long live the amazing Marvin!"
everyone shouted.
Lizzie gave Marvin a hug.
Big George lifted his chin and howled.
"That's only the beginning!"
said Lizzie.
Wait until you see what happens in episode two!
Summarize.
Summarize what Lizzie did to write her comic book.
- Wasn't that a great story?
Pretty cool how it ended, right?
That she ended up really caring about her little brother.
Okay, so this week we have talked a lot about how an author gives us clues about how the story happens or what else is going on in the story?
Today I want us to also do that same thing.
So our question today is; how does the author show that Lizzie's relationship with Marvin has changed?
And there's lots of different ways.
Remember we can talk, we can look at the pictures.
We can listen to the words.
Sometimes there's other clues, even within the words, right?
Okay, so I think what we're gonna do is talk about and do a little bit of a retelling of our story.
And so maybe we can call Ricky to come over and kind of help us out just a little bit.
So, hey, Ricky!
- I heard you!
I heard the word retell, so I tried to get here as fast as I could Mrs. Nix!
- That's great!
Okay, so Ricky, so we're gonna just kind of retell and maybe you can help me look at, because you're really good at finding some clues about, and something to think about is, how does Lizzie feel on these two pages?
Because we took a page from the beginning of the story and we're really gonna compare it to the end of the story because some things changed!
And I have a little chart down here.
That's gonna talk about Lizzie's actions and Lizzie's stories.
Because, remember what did she have retell?
She had a comic book.
- She loved writing.
- She did!
- She loved it!
- It's like she wants to be an author.
- Yeah, so she was doing all kinds of, of stories.
So we're gonna talk about what her actions were on this first page and what her stories were kind of about versus, compare it to, how her actions and stories looked and sounded the end.
Do you wanna help me do that?
- Mm hmm.
Because guess what, Mrs. Nix?
- What?
- I made a text to self connection!
- Did you?
- I did because I have a little brother.
My little brother.
- Do you have a little brother?
- My brother is little.
He bothers me sometimes!
- Well, you know sometimes siblings can do that.
- So I know exactly how Lizzie was feeling.
So in the beginning, guess what?
- What?
- She did not like her brother a lot, and I've been on that page, when her parents were gonna take the brother to the grandparents' house, she said "Woo hoo!"
Well, she didn't say that, but she was thrilled!
- Right?
Because she said, "No Marvin!"
Right?
And the author told us that she was thrilled.
- She was happy he was leaving.
Because she was like, "I can have some peace and quiet."
But guess what, in her stories?
Because I see that you have the word stories there.
- I do, yeah.
What happened in her stories?
- In the stories she made her brother like the bad guy or like the villain of the story.
- That's right.
- Because that's how I would make my brother.
- Yeah, because she probably didn't care a whole lot for her brother at the beginning of the story.
Did things change, though, Ricky?
As the story went on?
How did they change, how did her actions change?
- Well, at the end of the story, guess what?
- What?
- She hugs her brother!
- And she tells him it's just the beginning because she realized her stories were about her brother, and if she didn't have a brother, she wouldn't even have any stories!
- That's right, right?
And so how did her brother's character change in her stories?
- So at the end, her brother became the hero.
- Aww, that's right.
And so their relationship really changed from the beginning to the end.
So the author shows their relationship has changed really, by showing Lizzie's different actions and her stories.
So the author was able to give us a lot of clues, right?
- Mm hmm, I love this story and I'm gonna try to go and love my little brother, but I do love my cousin.
- Aww.
- But I'm gonna really try, because I think what Lizzie was thinking, I don't think I would have a great time if my brother wasn't here because I love playing with him.
- Absolutely, well thank you so much, Ricky!
I really appreciate it.
I think I'm gonna do a little writing with everybody now.
So, super readers, I want us to talk about what our writing prompt is for today.
So it's just; write about a sibling, a cousin or a friend.
And so think about who you might want to write about.
Maybe, you have a little brother or an older brother or a little sister, an older sister or a friend.
Someone that you're able to write about.
Alright, here comes a story for you to check out and we'll see you back here in just a minute.
- Good morning.
I'm Felicia.
I just read this book, "Geraldine" by Elizabeth Lilly.
It's about a giraffe with a long neck like me.
She's new at school and has trouble making friends.
But Geraldine meets Cassie, a girl that's just like her, a little different.
Read to find out what happens with these two friends.
You'll like it!
Bye, Felicia!
- It's gonna be so good.
So, thank you so much for sharing that.
It was, yeah, I love it.
Can't wait to check out that book.
- I have a knock-knock joke because it's Friday!
Well, I just love to tell jokes every day.
- Because it's Friday.
- Okay, ready?
Knock-knock!
- Who's there?
- Beezer!
- Beezer who?
- Bees are buzzing!
It must be Spring.
- He's so silly.
- Oh My, I have a sound for that.
(slide whistle playing) - That's awesome.
Thanks for hanging out with us today at Valley PBS!
We look forward to seeing you back here on Monday.
So take care you guys.
