Welcome back to the ranch.
I'm Mr. Dawson and I am here shoveling a lot of snow because it has been cold here at the ranch.
But I'm glad I'm inside right now so I can take you on some discovery so we can learn how to read and write.
And talk about learning, I wanna tell you about what the activity book how do you get an activity book?
You write to me here at Valley PBS and tell me something you've learned.
And when you do, I will send you an activity book.
Isn't that exciting?
Well, let's get started learning then.
What should we do first?
Always, always we review our letters.
Are you ready?
Here we go.
D, dolphin, d. L, lemon, l. B, bat, b. T, turtle, t. I, insect, i. O, octopus, o. N, nest, n. C, camel, ck.
H, hippo, h-_.
F, fire, ph.
R, rose, wr-_ P, piano, p. E, egg, ea.
K, koala, -_ck.
And this is the letter we're gonna learn today.
U, here's an uppercase U, and here's the lowercase u.
And this is an umbrella and it tells us what the sound is, u, u.
So U, umbrella, u and I tell you what, here's a video that's gonna tell you more about the letter U (bright music) - [Narrator] Short Uu.
The letter U stands for the sound u sound you hear at the beginning of umbrella.
Two other words that have the u sound, are up and duck.
This is an uppercase U.
This is a lowercase u.
This is how to write the uppercase letter U.
Straight down, curve around, straight up.
This is how to write the lowercase letter u.
Straight down, curve around and up, straight down.
It's your turn.
- Did you learn all there was to know about the letter U?
Well, the one thing you didn't learn is what kind of animal letter is the letter U?
That's right, it's a chicken letter because it starts in the middle and goes down to the bottom.
u is for U.
Now let's take a look at our pictures here.
I have three pictures and I wanna listen to the very beginning sound and listen for that u is for U sound, here we go.
Here's this first one, this rabbit is going up, up.
Did you hear it?
u, u, u is for U.
Let's take a look at the next picture, umbrella.
Oh, oh, that was the picture on our letter card.
u, u , umbrella.
u, did you hear the u that came out first?
U is for U and here's another one.
That's an umpire.
Can you say umpire?
Umpire.
Umpire, what's the first sound in umpire?
u, u, u is for U.
So when you hear u, you know that usually you're gonna put the letter U, why?
Because U is for U.
What time is it now?
Oh, I know daily phonemic awareness.
We're gonna do some phonemic awareness all this week.
Boys and girls we've been talking about rhyming words.
Oh my goodness.
Remember, rhyming words are words that sound the same in the back.
All right.
I have some pictures right here.
I have some pictures right here.
Oh, and here we go.
I can't believe it.
I am going to try to draw.
That's gonna be an exciting thing because I don't draw too good, but guess what?
It doesn't matter.
I'm gonna try anyway because that is the, I can do attitude.
All right.
Here's our first word.
This is the picture egg.
Can you say egg?
Egg.
Now, what word rhymes with egg?
Oh, Oh, I know, leg.
So I'm gonna try to draw a leg right here.
Here we go.
(pen scribbles) And there's the leg.
Leg, egg.
They both say, 'eg.
Now, let's go to the next one.
This is a sled.
A sled.
Okay, I wonder what that back sound is.
I can, you know what?
I can use my skill of onset and rhyme to figure it out.
Here we go.
I'm gonna go sled, sl 'ed.
So I need something with 'ed.
'Ed, can you think of one?
Right, a bed.
I'm gonna do a bed right here.
Bed, here we go, here we go.
This is my bed, then I'ma do a pillow right here.
Does that look like a bed?
Now it does, that made all the difference, bed.
All right, okay, let's take a look at the next one, key.
A key, oh let me see, what is the rhyme?
-_ck, 'ey.
So I need something with 'ey.
Oh, I heard you, I heard somebody out there say, bee.
So I'm gonna draw a bee.
Oh man.
Now we're really gonna make my skills go up there.
Okay, there's that.
And then I'm gonna put a little head on him and I know that they have antennas and I know that they have wings.
And if it's a bumblebee, it has stripes.
So maybe I'm gonna make mine a bumblebee.
And I know they have legs too.
There we go.
Oh, let's do some eyes and maybe a smiley face.
There we go.
Key, bee.
There we go.
Okay, here's our last picture, goat.
Goat, what do I wanna do with that one?
Goat, boat.
Oh that's what I wanna do, I wanna do a boat.
And boat, I think I can do for sure.
Boat, maybe I'll do an O.
There we go, an O in the boat.
All right, great job.
You guys are amazing.
You've learned so much about rhyming words.
It's time for now to talk about our sight words.
Do you remember our sight words for this weak?
Here they are, right here.
What's this word?
- Right, she, S-H-E spells she.
And what is this word?
Is, I-S spells is.
Why is that important?
'Cause when you see him in a book and remember earlier this week we saw the word she, and we just see it, and we know it and we go, "Oh, I know that word, it's the word, she."
That's why you want to remember all of these sight words.
That's right.
Hey, I wanna talk about nouns again.
I have some nouns.
I have carrot, bush, toy and dish.
And we've been talking about making them plural which means more than one.
Well, some of these we'll just take an S like the word carrot, I'm going to put just an S on there and that makes it plural carrots.
Or toy, if I put an S on there, then it makes it plural.
And then now it says toys.
But what about these two?
Oh my goodness, what am I going to do?
Oh, my goodness.
But look right up here it says, "If a word ends in S, X, Z, ch, sh," then I'm going to add 'es.
And before I do that I have to say that when I make a mistake, I have to fix it.
And right here, I think I need the letter S right here.
So I need to fix mistakes.
If a word ends in S, X, Z, CH, SH then I'm going to put ES at the end.
So look, bush has SH in the end.
So I'm gonna have to add an ES and then I'm gonna say not bushs but I'm gonna say bushes, bushes.
The same thing with this one, dish, dish.
You see the SH?
And remember it says if a word ends in S, X, Z, CH, or SH I have to add ES and that makes it plural.
So here I go.
So now it goes from dish to dishes, from dish to dishes.
So I have carrot to carrots, bush to bushes, toy to toys and dish to dishes.
All right, now let's end up talking about our passage today.
Our passage, the title is Pup Is Fun.
I want to look at the very first one and try to find some U's.
It says this, Kip and Pup run and run.
Ah, I wanna find some u is for U, here we go.
Let me see Kip, nope.
And, nope.
Here's one, there's a U, u is for U.
And run, r u u is for U.
And here's another run, u is for U. Ah, I wish I had more time to read all of these, but I look and I see our time is almost done.
We've done so many things today.
I've been excited about it.
What have we learned?
Well, we started off learning about u is for U, u is for U.
And then we talked about rhyming words, how they sound the same in the back.
And next we talked about the sight words, she and is.
And then we talked about how to make plural nouns and how some of them, you have to add SH and we'll look a little bit more at that tomorrow.
And then we looked for some U's in our passage.
I had so much fun today, and I'm kind of in awe that our time goes so fast.
I hope I'll see you here tomorrow so we can learn some more at the ranch.
Bye.
