Hey, welcome back to Discovery Ranch.
I'm Mr. Dawson and I'm here to take you on discoveries so that you can learn how to read and write.
I was just finishing up my email telling all my employees how good they're doing in removing all the snow.
But now that we're inside, let's do some learning.
But before we get started with our learning, I want to talk about our activity book.
Remember that if you will send me a letter telling me all the things that you've learned, then I will send you an activity book.
I've already sent off a lot of these out to people who've written me letters.
It could be your turn.
Let's get started.
Let's review our letters.
Are you ready?
Here we go.
D, dolphin, /d/.
L, lemon, /l/.
B, bat, /b/.
T, turtle, /t/.
I, insect, /i/.
O, octopus, /o/.
N, nest, /n/.
C, camel, /c/.
H, hippo, /h/.
F, fire, /f/.
R, rose, /r/.
P, piano, /p/.
E, egg, /e/.
K, koala, /k/.
So, let me put these away and remember that we are talking about the letter U.
Here's the uppercase U, and here's the lowercase u.
Do you remember what U says?
Yeah, the phoneme for U is /u/ and here's the umbrella to help us remember that /u/ is for U.
Well, let's take a look at some pictures and see if we can figure out which one has /u/ is for U.
Are you ready?
Let's take a look at this one.
This is an undershirt.
Do you hear the first phoneme /u/, /u/, /u/, /u/ is for U so they put a lowercase u there.
So let's take a look at this one.
That cat is under /u/, /u/ under the chair.
Do you hear the /u/, /u/, /u/ is for U.
So I'm gonna put the lowercase u.
There we go.
Here's the next one.
We did one of these, I think.
Up, the guy is going up the stairs.
Do you hear up, /u/, /u/?
So that guess what?
That gets the /u/ is for U.
Nice, let's keep going.
What is this?
Umpire, umpire.
Do you hear the very first sound, /u/, /u/ umpire?
/U/, /u/ is for U so I put the u there, the lowercase u in this case.
All right.
Ooh, let's keep going.
Maybe they're all gonna be /u/ is for U today.
Okay, what is this?
Umbrella, /u/, umbrella.
I hear the /u/.
Did you hear the /u/?
/U/ is for U.
There's my lowercase u.
Let's do the next one.
What is this?
Elephant, /e/, /e/, elephant.
No, /e/, that does not say /u/.
That's /e/ and /e/ is for E. We don't wanna do that one for sure.
Okay, let's take a look at the next two pictures.
Lion, lion.
/L/, no, not that one either, no way.
That's /l/, /l/ is for L. Let's look at our last picture.
What is that?
Oh, I know, it's upside down, upside down, /u/, /u/, /u/.
That has the U, so I'm gonna put the U there 'cause that's upside down, /u/ is for U.
There we have it.
We found all the pictures that have /u/ is for U.
And that's what we're gonna do, we put a U, /u/ is for U.
Nice.
What should we do now?
Oh, I know.
Daily phonemic awareness, here we go, here we go.
What have we been talking about?
We've been talking about rhyming words, yes.
What are rhyming words?
That's two words that sound the same in the back.
We've been doing that all week and now here it is.
We have some more.
I think I'm supposed to be drawing again.
Oh my goodness.
Oh my goodness.
I have to look right over here at some words that I want to do.
Oh yes, there we go.
I forgot the words that I was going to use today, but I got them now.
Here we go, wig.
I need to find a word that's gonna rhyme with wig.
What is the word?
Oh, I know, dig, dig.
So if I have a hole, and then maybe I'll make some dirt here, then I have to have a shovel, a shovel.
You think about a shovel.
Ooh, there it is.
And there we are.
Oh, it's like, we're digging deeper into learning.
Right.
Okay.
Here's the next one.
That's rug, rug.
Now I need to have a word for rug.
Do you have one?
All right, you're challenging me here.
Bug?
Okay, I'm gonna, oh, I got it, I got it.
Here we go.
I wonder if you can guess what kind of bug this is.
What is that?
A spider.
A spider has lots of eyes.
Lots of eyes.
And yes, I told you I'm not a very good drawer, so but that's my bug right there.
Maybe it's a different bug.
Okay, here's the next one, hat.
What word rhymes with hat?
Right, a cat.
Ooh, okay, here we go.
I think I can do this one.
Here are the ears, and here is the mouth, and the nose, and the eyes and whiskers.
There's my cat.
All right.
I'm gonna stop right there, boys and girls, because it looks like my drawing is not doing so well today, but that's okay because at least I am trying.
So what are we going to do now?
That's right, we're gonna talk about sight words.
Let's go over here to the sight words.
Here we go.
What is this one, do you remember?
Right, this is the word she.
S-H-E spells she.
And what's this word?
Wow, good remembering.
Is, I-S spells is.
And that's exactly what you need to do, you remember them so that when you see them, you know them.
Well, let's talk about nouns.
We've been talking about nouns all week, and then later on we've been talking about adding S and ES.
Remember, if a word ends in S, X, Z, CH or SH, I need to add an ES when I make it plural.
Well, look at this word, fox.
Does it have that X?
It does.
So I can't just add an S, I have to add an ES to make it plural.
Now it says foxes.
Inch, oh, it has the CH, so guess what?
I have to add the ES 'cause that's what it says.
If a word ends in S, X, Z, CH or SH, add ES.
So now it's inches.
How about box?
Right.
I have to add ES because it has the X.
So here I go.
So now it goes from box to boxes.
And this last one, what do you notice?
Right.
It has a CH, so if it has a CH, what does it tell me?
I have to add that SH.
So it goes from peach to peaches.
Very nice.
Do you see how that works?
If you have S, X, Z, CH or SH at the end of the word, of the noun, then you're gonna add an ES so it can be plural.
Awesome.
Well, let's finish up with doing a book.
How about that?
Let's see what story we might be doing today.
Here it is.
Our story today is "A Pub and a Cub."
I want you to notice all the U's.
The /u/ is for U in this story.
Here we go.
"I am a pup.
I have a mom and a dad."
Do you see the U?
/U/ is for U.
And look at all those sight words.
I, am, and A and have.
Lots of sight, and oh my goodness, lots of sight words.
Okay, let's keep going.
"I am in a pack.
We sit in a den.
I am not a pet."
No, no, no, no.
"I have not met a pet pup."
Let's keep going.
Do you see those U's?
Are you noticing the U's?
"I am a cub.
Mom and dad see me."
Do you see the /u/ is for U?
/K/ /u/ /u/ /u/ is for U.
"I am a cub.
Mom and dad see me.
I sit on a rock in the sun."
Oh, there's another U.
/U/ is for U, /sun/.
"I nap in the sun a lot.
Sis and I have fun.
We can go up, up.
A pup can run for fun.
A cub can run for fun."
Do you see the /u/ is for U?
Look, /u/ is for U, /u/ is for U, /u/ is for U.
Look at all those /u/ is for U.
And I have to say, look at the sight words.
All those sight words that we have been learning all this time.
Remember, sight words are important because when you see them, if you remember them, when you see them, you go, oh, I know that word and I can read that word.
And that's what you want to be able to do.
You want to be able to see those words and read them.
All right.
Now we have been learning a lot all week and tomorrow we're gonna use what we've learned to read a book.
That's right, remember Friday is reading day.
Tomorrow we are gonna have a great time reading a book.
Oh, come back and have fun with me.
We're gonna have so much fun.
And at the Ranch, it's always fun, of course.
We're learning how to read and write.
Well, I hope to see you tomorrow because we're gonna have some fun.
Have a great day and have a good day at school.
We will talk to you and see you tomorrow.
Bye.
