Welcome to Discovery Ranch.
I was just outside because everybody was telling me that the windows were all frosted up, so I had (panting) to scrape the windshields.
But I'm here now, right inside, so that you and I can go on some discoveries here at the ranch to learn how to read and write.
Yeah, read and write.
Oh, I'm so tired.

What do we think we're gonna do first?
It's the same thing all the time.
It's review the letters.
We gotta keep them fresh in our brain.
Are you ready?
Here we go.
T, turtle, t. I, insect, ih.
O, octopus, ah.
N, nest, nnn.
C, camel, cuh.
H, hippo, huh.
F, fire, fff.
R, rose, urr.
G, guitar, guh.
This is the one we did yesterday, right?
And this is the one we're going to do today and tomorrow.
Do you know what letter that is?
This is the letter W. Do you remember?
This is the uppercase W, and this is the lowercase w, and the phoneme for W is wuh.
Wuh is for W, so I go, W, window, wuh.
I know, let's watch a video that's gonna tell us more about the letter W. (upbeat music) - [Teacher] Consonant W. The letter W stands for the wuh sound you hear at the beginning of window.
(window closing) Two other words that begin with the letter W are web and wig.
(air whooshing) This is an uppercase W. This is a lowercase w. This is how to write the uppercase letter W. Slant down, slant up, slant down, slant up.
This is how to write the lowercase letter w. Slant down, slant up, slant down, slant up.
It's your turn.
- Did you learn a lot about the letter W?
The one thing you didn't learn is what kind of animal letter is the letter W?
Do you remember?
That's right, it's a chicken letter, because it's in the middle and goes down to the bottom line.
Doesn't go to the top, and it doesn't go below, so it's right there, right there in the middle.
So remember that W, window, wuh.
Wuh is for W. Well, let's take a look at our pictures on our book today, and see if we can hear that wuh is for W at the very beginning of each of these pictures.

Yes, wuh is for W, that's right.
Wuh is for W. Remember that.
So what is this?

So all of these had wuh, and wuh is for W. So anytime you hear a word that has wuh, guess what letter you're gonna write?
Right, W!
Okay.
Hmm.

Oh, I remember, I remember.
Daily phonemic awareness!
Here we go.
We've been talking about identifying and segmenting and identifying and then putting the letters that go with those phonemes.
So, first of all, we have to look at our picture.
This is sun.
Can you say sun?
Okay.
Get ready.
Get those hands up.
Are you ready?
We're gonna segment it, slow motion slow, just like in the movies sometimes.
That's where we can get all of our phonemes.
Here we go.
You ready?
We're doing sun.
I have to remember that.
Sss, uh, nnn.
Did you hear all those phonemes?
How many phonemes?
That's right, three phonemes.
What was the beginning one?
Sss.
What was the middle?
Uh.
What was the ending?
Nnn.
Okay, let's do the letters.
Are you ready?
So the first phoneme was sss.
Sss is for S, right.
So I get the S and I put it in the first place, because that's the first phoneme that we heard, and that's the letter that goes with the phoneme.
What was the middle phoneme?
Uh, right, uh!
And uh is for?
That's right, U!
I'm glad you're here to help me, 'cause sometimes I forget.
Okay.
So there I go.
I'm gonna put it in the middle, because it was the phoneme that was in the middle.
Okay.
What was the last one?
We had sss and uh, what was the last phoneme?
Nnn, nnn is for N, right!
It's for N. So I'm gonna take the N and I'll put it right there.
'Cause it was the ending phoneme.
Now let's blend it and make sure that we have that word.
You ready?

Hey, hey, hey, guess what?
I think it's time to come right over here and look at our sight words.
Let me put these down for right now, because I'm going to do proper nouns in a minute, but let's take a look at our sight words first.
Here we go.
Remember, we're studying two sight words this week.
It's was and for.
How do you spell was, do you remember?
Right, W-A-S spells was.
And how do you spell for?
F-O-R spells for.
Remember, when you remember 'em in your brain and you see 'em, you can read them, and if somebody asked you to spell them, you'll know it, because it'll be right there in your brain.
Hey, let's talk about proper nouns.
Remember, proper nouns are nouns that have specific, or names.
Just like my name is Mr. Dawson, that's a proper noun for me.
So here we go, right here.
I have two words here.
This is the word street, street, but you'll notice that it is not uppercase.
So that could be any street.
That could be any street at all.
But over here it says Main Street.
Now you know it's a proper noun.
Why is it a proper noun?
How do you know that?
Because it has an uppercase letter on Street and on Main.
So we know that is Main Street.
Let me think about.
Oh, I know what to do.
Follow me over here.

I have a great idea.
Let me show you what I mean.
Let me get a piece of paper here.
I have a piece of paper right back here in the back.
I'm gonna put it right here, and then I want you to see this.
Now, that is a dog.
It could be any dog.
It could be any dog, but if you're talking about my dog, my dog's name is Obi.
So if it's a specific dog with a name, then I have to make that uppercase.
It's just not any dog, it's Obi.
Obi is my dog.
Oh, you know what?
My son has a dog, and his dog's name is Shadow.
So when I'm gonna spell his name, Shadow, that is a special noun called proper noun, and we always give it an uppercase.
That's why sometimes you see uppercase words in the middle of a sentence, because usually it is a proper noun.
What is a proper noun?
A proper noun is a name of a person, place, thing, or as my friend says, also animals.
I love Obi.
By the way, this is not a picture of Obi, but if I had a picture of Obi, I'd show you.
He's my cutie pie.
All right, let's end up talking about our passage today.
Our passage today is Wet Dog, Wet Dog.
Let's read it.
Tug is a wet dog.
Tug ran to Meg.
Do not wag, Tug!
Do not get Meg wet!
Do you know what I want to do?
That's right, I want to find some W's.
Do you see the W's?
Right, here we go.
There's one.
There's an uppercase one right there.
Oh, here's one right here.
How about in the second?
No, I didn't see one there.
How about on the third one?
The third word?
Let me see, I'm looking.
Oh, yes, a lowercase w. How about in number four?
Number four, right, the last word has a W. There we go.
We found a lot of W's.
By the way, by the way, what is the phoneme that w has?
Wuh?
Yes, amazing!
Wuh is for W. Now, we're gonna do this passage tomorrow, but tomorrow, we're gonna look for proper nouns.
