It's time to get busy and do some learning.
First, we're going to review our letters.
Do you remember doing this yesterday?
Yes!
So let's do it again.
Let's see how good you remember.
W, window, wuh.
G, guitar, guh.
Are you saying them with me?
T, turtle, t. I, insect, ih.
O, octopus, ah.
N, nest, nnn.
C, camel, cuh.
H, hippo, huh.
U, umbrella, uh.
P, piano, puh.
Okay, and remember that today, we are still talking about the letter V. V, volcano, v. Did you get that?
Well, today, over here, we're gonna have to find the pictures that have v at the very beginning.
Are you ready?
Let's take a look at this one, just like they did here.
Violin.
Do you hear it?
V, v, that is for V. So they put the letter V there.
Well, let's take a look at this one right here.
Are you ready?
That's a ladder.
A ladder.
Listen to the very beginning sound, ladder.
Ulll.
No, no, we don't want that one.
No way.
That has ull, and we know that ull is for L. Let's go to the next picture.
What is this?
A volcano!
Volcano.
Volcano, v, v, yes!
We want that one for sure.
So I'm gonna put a lowercase v right there.
V is for V. Nice, nice.
Let's keep going to the next picture.
What is this?
It's a vest.
Vest.
V, v, yes!
We want that one too.
V is for V. Okay, I pulled out a purple one this time, but that's okay.
Or is it magenta?
I don't know.
Okay, let's keep going.
Ah, this here is a vase, vase.
Do you hear the beginning sound?
V, vase.
Yes, that is v is for V. And I'm doing a lowercase v. Do you notice how it's a chicken letter because it started at the dotted line and went down to the bottom?
Didn't go below the line.
Didn't go to the top line.
That's what a chicken letter is.
Let's look at the next, the next one.
That's a watch.
Watch.
Listen to that beginning sound.
Watch, wuh, wuh.
No, no, we don't want that one.
That has wuh, and wuh is for W. Okay, let's look at this one.
This is a vine, a vine.
Listen to the very beginning sound that comes out of my mouth.
Vine, did...
Yes, yes, that is v is for V, so I put a, I better put one there.
V is for V!
And let's look at the last one.
Do you know what that one is?
Yes, that's a vet, a vet.
A vet is a doctor for animals.
Vet.
Listen to the very beginning sound.
Vet, v, v, v, oh yes, it has that, that sound for v, so guess what I'm gonna write?
I'm gonna write v is for V. Nice job.
Look at all those V's that we found.
That is awesome.
Oh, that is so cool.
Hey, guess what time it is?
That's right, it's time for daily phonemic awareness!
So let me get this one down.
Do you remember we talked about alliteration?
Alliteration is when a bunch of words have the same sound and the same letter.
If you can identify those, those can help us to learn how to read better.
Well, today is gonna be a little bit different than yesterday.
Why is that?
Oh, yes, here we go.
I have a passage that I'm going to read to you right now, and I want you to listen for all the words that have the same sound and same letter at the very beginning.
And when you do, I want you to tell me the phoneme and the letter, are you ready?
Here we go.
Helpful Hal heard Sue cry, "How I had hoped that it would dry!"
Helpful Hal knew what had to be done, so he hung her sock high in the sun.
Did you hear all those words that had the same phoneme?
You did?
Okay, okay.
What were, what was the phoneme and letter that you heard a lot?
Okay, let's watch it.
Let's see, I'm gonna put it 'cause I heard it, and somebody was saying is huh is for H. Well, let's take a look.
I have the passage right here, and sure enough, look at that.
Look at that.
Look at all the H's.
Three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12.
Amazing, you are!
Whoa!
You heard, look.
Helpful Hal heard, how, had hoped, help, Hal, he hung her, high!
All of those have the same phoneme and letter at the very beginning.
That's what alliteration is, the same phoneme and letter at the very beginning.
Ooh, that's pretty cool.
Let me put this right down here, and then guess what time it is.
It's time to go look at our sight words.
Let's look at our sight words.
Remember that knowing the sight words, it's really important, because you'll see these words a lot, and when you see them, you'll say, "Oh, I know that word!
That's the word of!"
Or "That's the word have!"
Yeah, that's what you want.
And then if somebody says, "Hey, how do you spell have?"
You can go, "Oh, that's easy, I have it right up here in my brain, it's H-A-V-E!"
Right?
So let's practice.
This is the word of.
How do you spell of?
O-F spells of.
Awesome.
And then here's our other word, have.
How do you spell it?
H-A-V-E spells have.
Awesome.
Of and have!
That is so, so cool.
So remember 'em in your brain, that's what you want to do for sure.
Let's talk about plural nouns.
Remember that our rule says if a word ends with Z, S, X, CH, or SH, add ES.
Okay.
So I have four words here.
Let's read them.
This one says, dish.
This one says night.
This one says bus, and this one says lunch.
We have to figure out which one gets the S, and which one gets the ES.
Let's look at the word dish.
Look at the last letter.
It's all about the last letter or letters, right?
Look, it has SH, so I'm gonna go up here and look.
Z, S, X, CH, oh, it's an SH, so I'm gonna have to add an ES to it.
So now it becomes dishes.
Dishes.
Let's look at this one, night.
Night.
What is the last letter?
T. Is T up there?
No, no, so I don't need to add an ES, I just need to add an S, so night becomes nights.
How about bus?
What do you say about bus?
Whoa!
Yes, it has an S!
That's awesome!
So you're right!
It needs to have an ES, so bus becomes buses, buses.
All right, here's the last one.
Let's look at lunch.
Do you see the last letters?
What do you, that's right!
It's a CH, and CH tells us what?
If it ends with Z, S, X, CH, CH, add ES.
So I'm gonna take the ES and put it right there, and now lunches becomes, or excuse me, lunch becomes lunches.
Boys and girls, that was amazing!
In just one day, you picked it up and we reviewed it, and you got it.
Oh my goodness, that is so amazing.
Well, we did the sight words, and now we finished up with our plural nouns.
Oh, that's right.
We need to read.
Here's our passage.
We did it yesterday, and when we did it yesterday, we looked for all the V's, because we found out that v, volcano, or V, volcano, v. So we know that v is for V. Let's read it.
It says, "Fix it, Vick!"
Mom has to pick up Rex.
But the van can not go.
There's something wrong with the van.
I wonder what it is.
It says, Get Vick!
Vick can fix the van.
Here we go.
That is so awesome.
Do you remember, I think it was a couple weeks ago, we talked about proper nouns, right.
So, you know what I want to do first is I want to look through here and find the proper nouns.
Remember, proper nouns are nouns that have uppercase, because there's a name of something.
Yes, so right here, Vick is the name of somebody, so it has to have an uppercase.
And then Rex, do you see Rex?
That's the clue, the clue is the uppercase letter, wherever it is, it's an uppercase letter.
So I know that that's a proper noun.
Do you see it somewhere else?
Right, in three, there's Vick again, uppercase first letter gives me the indicator that that is a proper noun.
How about in number four?
Do you see any of 'em?
Do you see a proper noun?
Yes, Vick!
Right!
Even though it's at the front, it's gotta have an uppercase letter because it's the front, but it's also an uppercase because it's a name.
It's a name of somebody.
So in this case, Vick.
So there we found all the proper nouns, yes.
Hey, we had so much fun today.
We worked on a lot of things today, that's for sure.
We did the letter V, we did more plural nouns, we did some sight words and alliteration!
But we're not done yet.
