I'm Mr. Dawson, and I'm here to take you on discoveries every day, so you can learn how to read and write.
I had the sunglasses because though it's cold and it's winter, it was sunny, and wow, was it bright outside!
So I had to wear my sunglasses today.
Have you gone outside to see the trees sprouting?
My trees at the ranch are starting to sprout, it's so exciting!
That means things are beginning to grow and live again!
Oh, I'm so excited about all the crops that are gonna come.
But you know what?
We have a crop growing right here, that's right.
A crop of kids that are learning how to read and write, yes!
Oh, I'm so excited about it.
We better get ready to do that right now, but before we do, remember, if you write to me right here at Valley PBS and tell me something you've learned, I'll send you an activity book.
All right, now, let's get started with our review.
Are you ready to review the letters?
Here we go.
E, egg, eh.
R, rose, urr.
F, fire, fff.
N, nest, nnn.
C, camel, cuh.
H, hippo, huh.
U, umbrella, uh.
P, piano, puh.
V, volcano, v. X, box, x.
All right, let us remember that the letter that we started learning was the letter J.
And the girl is jumping to remind us that juh is for J. Juh is for J.
So I have our paper here, and we're going to look at the pictures and decide which one has juh at the very beginning.
Are you ready?
Here we go.
They've done the first one for us.
That's jam.
Juh, juh, jam.
So they put a juh is for J already there.
Okay, here we go.
This is a jacket.
Can you say jacket?
Right, jacket.
So listen to that very beginning phoneme in jacket.
Juh, juh is for J. Whoa, I almost dropped that.
Okay, here we go.
I'm gonna do a lowercase J, which is?
That's right, a chicken letter.
Watch, see?
It goes below, not a chicken letter.
Yes, thank you for correcting me.
It's a monkey letter.
It goes down below the line, and then I put a little dot there.
Okay.
Let's look at the next picture.
Bus, bus.
Buh, buh, buh.
No, that's for B.
So I wouldn't put a J there.
Let's look at this.
Oh, really nice, that's jewelry.
Jewelry.
Do you hear the very beginning sound?
Juh, juh.
There it is.
Juh is for J.
So I have to put a J.
The monkey letter, there it is.
All right, let's keep going.
What is this?
Right, it's a jet, jet.
Do you hear the beginning sound?
Juh, juh, jet.
Right, it has juh, and juh is for J!
Whoa!
There we go, juh.
So when you hear that juh in a word, you can say, "Oh, I know what letter to put, it's J!"
Let's look at this next one.
This is a canoe, canoe.
Cuh, canoe.
No, no.
That's the wrong sound.
No.
So we won't do anything on that one.
Let's look at the next one.
This is juice.
Can you say juice?
Listen to that very first sound and see if we want that one.
Juice, juh, juh.
What do you think?
Yes, yes, 'cause it has juh.
So if I hear juh, what letter am I gonna write?
J.
That's how we would do it in kindergarten, that's for sure.
Okay, and here's the last one, jump rope.
Jump rope.
Do you hear the very beginning sound?
Yes, juh!
Juh is for J!
Here we go.
There it is.
We found all the pictures that have juh is for J.
So anytime that you hear a word and it has juh, more than likely it's gonna be a J.
Isn't that awesome?
All right, it's time for daily phonemic awareness, here it is!
Here it is, daily phonemic awareness!
Yes, remember that this week we are sounding out words and then putting the letters that go with the phonemes that we hear in the word.
Our word today is sun.
Can you say sun?
Right, and then to get all the phonemes and then the letters, remember what we do, we have to go slow motion slow like we're in a movie.
And then if we do that, we'll get all the phonemes.
Are you ready?
Here we go.
Put the hand up, put it up!
Oh, I see it.
I see it right there.
Here we go.
Here we go.
You ready?
Let's do sun.
Sss, uh, nnn.
We got it?
How many phonemes?
Three phonemes.
What was the beginning phoneme?
Sss, right.
What was the middle phoneme?
Uh, and what was the ending phoneme?
Nnn, okay.
All right, let's put it together, you ready?
The first phoneme was sss is for S. Oh, yes, right up here.
Let's see if I can get it off and put it right here.
There we go.
Sss is for S. What was that middle phoneme?
Uh, uh is for U.
Here's the U.
So I'm gonna put it right there.
And then what was the ending phoneme?
Sss, uh, nnn.
Nnn is for?
Hm, what?
Say it!
Yeah.
Yes, right.
It's N. Sss, uh, nnn is for N. Look at that.
So now let's put it all together and see if we've done it.
Sss, uh, nnn.
Sun, sun, sun!
You did it!
Oh, wow.
And that makes me think that we should do some sight words.
Here we go.
Do you remember the sight words we've been learning?
Remember, if you can remember 'em in your brain, then when you see 'em you can read them.
And if somebody asks you to write them, you can say, "Oh, that's easy!
It's right in my brain."
Just like this one.
How do you spell or?
O-R, right.
O-R spells or!
And then how do you spell they?
T-H-E-Y spells they.
If you know those two sight words, when you see 'em you'll be able to say, "Oh, I know that word, it's or.
Oh, I know that word, it's they."
Look for it in books.
When you read books on SORA or at your house, look for these two words, yes!
Okay, let's talk about verbs.
I talked to Professor Geisenburg, he's doing much better.
Thank you for thinking about him.
Oh, wow.
He has to take it easy.
You know, being, yes, we'll leave it like that.
He's gotta take it easy.
Here we go.
Remember that verbs are action words that tells what is happening.
So I have three sentences, and I want to find the verbs.
Here we go.
Here's the first one.
My dog jumps.
Which word is the action word that tells what is happening?
My?
Can I my?
No.
Dog, I can't dog.
Jump.
Can I jump?
Yes, so that is the verb.
Look at this.
Look at this.
Jumps is the action word.
It's the verb.
Let's look at this next one.
My dog digs.
What is the action word that tells what's happening?
Oh, you got that one so quick.
Yes, digs.
Digs is telling what's happening.
Who's digging?
The dog is digging, right!
So that is the verb.
Last one.
My dog runs.
My dog runs.
Oh, can you tell me which one is the action word that tells what is happening?
Let's see, my?
No, I can't my.
How about dog?
Nope.
I can't dog.
That's the noun.
How about runs?
Can I run?
Not very fast, but yes, it's the action word that's telling what's happening.
So that is the verb.
So the verbs are jumps, digs, and runs.
By the way, who's running?
The dog is running.
These are the ones that are telling what is happening.
All right, let's end our day by looking at our reading passage that we had yesterday.
I had to go through it so quickly.
I felt so bad.
Let's go again, and see if we can have a little bit more time with it.
The title is "Quick Jan." Quin has no jam in the jug.
Quin can get Jan. Jan is quick.
Jan can get jam and get back.
All right, yesterday, we were finding the letter J's, and we found three.
Do you see any more J's?
Yes.
Here's a J.
Do you see any more?
Yes, here's another J, and here is another J.
How nice!
We found a lot of J's.
And the phoneme for J is juh.
Juh is for J.
All right.
Oh, you know what?
Here's some verbs.
Let's find some verbs that tells the action.
Here's one, Jan is quick.
What is the verb?
Yeah, she is.
She is.
She's doing something right there.
How about this one?
Jan can get jam and get back.
Here it is.
It's can get, she's getting something.
Can you get something?
Yes.
You can get something.
Of course.
Those are verbs, right!
That's really cool.
Let me see.
Is there anything else?
Oh, you remember, if I can do this, do you remember about proper nouns?
Remember, if it's a proper noun, it always has to be uppercase letters.
So there you go.
Man, we had a lot of fun doing that one.
It's time for us to go.
We've learned about the letter J, we learned about verbs and sight words, and we're gonna learn a lot more tomorrow, including a brand new letter.
Be here tomorrow.
Bye!
