Thank you.
Hey, welcome back to Discovery Ranch.
I'm Mr. Dawson, and I'm here to take you on discoveries, so that you can learn how to read and write.
I'm so excited about my trees.
You've been hearing me talk about them all week.
They look so healthy.
It's just gonna be a wonderful year here at the ranch as well as right here, we're learning a lot!
And don't forget, if you will write to me right here at the station, Valley PBS, and tell me something you have learned, I will send you an activity book.
Well, if you're gonna write to me, we better start learning, right?
Okay, here we go.
I'm gonna go over and what do we do first?
Always, yes!
We're going to review our letters and phonemes.
Are you ready?
Here we go.
P, piano, puh.
Are you saying them with me?
Practice, practice, always practice.
V, volcano, v. Q, queen, qua.
K, koala, kuh.
B, bat, buh.
Y, yo-yo, yuh.
R, rose, urr.
F, fire, fff.
N, nest, nnn.
C, camel, cuh.
Oh, yes, that's it.
We've reviewed them all.
That is awesome.
Well, remember, yesterday we found out about the letter Z, and here it is.
Remember, here's the uppercase Z and the lowercase z.
It's kinda cool, because they look exactly the same, only one is smaller.
And remember, the lowercase z is a chicken letter.
Well, remember that this zzz is for Z, so I want to look at all my pictures and find the pictures that have zzz is for Z.
Are you ready?
Just like the first one, zoo, and I'm glad they used that one.
So it's not a giveaway, but yeah, zzz is for Z, and they've written the Z.
Let's take a look at this one.
What is this?
Zebra, zebra.
What's the very beginning phoneme?
Zzz, zzz is for Z, right.
Okay, let me get, I'm gonna get my trusty dusty pen here, and I'll have to put a Z there, and I have to remember that it is a chicken letter.
So it goes from the middle line down to the bottom and then stops here.
There you go, Z. Zzz is for Z. Oh, I'm not gonna be tricked this time.
Yes, zero, zero.
What is the beginning phoneme in zero?
Zzz, zzz is for Z!
So I have to put a Z there.
Let's take a look at the next picture.
Quarter, quarter.
What's the beginning sound?
Qua, qua.
Is that the phoneme that we're looking for?
No, so I'm not gonna do anything with this one.
Let's take a look at the next one.
Zipper, zipper.
What's the beginning phoneme?
Zzz, zzz, right, we want that one!
Here we go.
I'm gonna put the letter Z right there, because we definitely want that one.
Zzz is for Z.
What is this?
Number six.
Can you say six?
Six.
Okay, listen to that beginning phoneme, sss.
Oh, it's kinda close, but it doesn't have that zzz, I don't hear it.
This one's kind of a quiet phoneme, sss.
Zzz, sss.
So no way, we don't want that one.
Okay.
How about this one?
Pen, pen, pen.
Puh, puh.
Definitely not.
No way.
Puh is for P, not Z.
Let's take a look at this.
What is that, a sideways W?
What is that?
Hmm.
Oh, oh yes, thank you.
I heard somebody out there.
They said it's zigzag!
Yeah, zigzag.
What is the beginning phoneme in zigzag?
Had two of those.
Zzz, zzz, zzz is for Z!
So I can put a Z right there.
All right, we did it.
We found all the pictures that have zzz is for Z in their word at the very beginning.
That is so cool!
Aw, remember, remember what?
Zzz is for Z.
Well, now it's time for daily phonemic awareness!
And what have we been learning?
Right, we've been learning how we can change a phoneme in a word, and it'll make a whole new word!
Whoa, now a couple days ago, we played a game where we were trying to figure that out.
So let's play that game again.
Can you figure out which phoneme we need to change in this video?
Here we go again, kids.
Another episode of phonemic awareness.
Today's picture is bug.
Can you say bug?
Let's find all the phonemes in the word bug.
Sound it out with me.
Ready, go.
Buh, uh, guh.
Wonderful.
Now let's find all the letters that go with those phonemes.
What's the beginning phoneme in bug?
Right, buh.
Buh is for B.
Now let's go to the next phoneme.
What's the middle phoneme in bug?
Great, uh.
Uh is for U.
Okay, only one more phoneme.
What is the last phoneme in bug?
Right, guh.
Guh is for G. Right, now we have all the phonemes in bug.
I want to change one phoneme so that bug changes into bag.
Which phoneme do we need to change?
That's right, it's the middle phoneme!
So, if I get rid of the middle phoneme, uh, what's the new phoneme I need to replace it?
That's right, that's right.
A, a is for A!
Nice job.
That is so amazing.
You're doing such a good job of sounding out these words.
I'm excited.
Okay.
Let's sound out the word to see if we have the word bag.
Ready, go.
Buh, a, guh.
Bag, bag, bag!
You did it.
Did you figure it out?
Did you figure you had to change the middle phoneme?
Yes, and did you figure out that you had to change it to a is for A, so it would say bag?
Great job.
Great job.
Let's take a look at our sight words.
Are you ready?
Our two words are here and me.
Let's spell the word here.
H-E-R-E spells here.
Good job.
Let's spell the word me.
M-E, it spells me.
And remember with sight words, we're trying to put 'em in our brain and remember them because we will see these words a lot when we read.
So if we have them in our brain, we don't have to worry about sounding them out or anything.
We just see it.
We can just see this word and say, "Oh, that's the word here!
That's the word me!"
Or somebody asks us to write it, we can say, "Oh, I know how to spell here, H-E-R-E!"
Right.
Well, let's go on and talk about verbs.
Remember, verbs are action words that tell what someone or something or an animal is doing.
And we've been talking about how do we change the word or add to the word so that it shows that it happened in the past.
And we found out that we can see an E-D a lot of times at the end of the word of the verb, that will show us that it happened long ago.
It didn't happen now, it's not going to happen.
It happened in the past.
So here is our first sentence.
Here is the verb, and it's a giveaway, because you have E-D at the end, let's read it.
Noah played the guitar.
What did Noah do?
What was the action?
He played, right!
Now, did he play it right now?
No, he played it in the past.
How do I know?
Because they added E-D. Well, do you see the verb in the next one?
Right, it's right here.
How do you know?
Because that E-D kind of gives it away.
So this says Olivia walked to school.
What did Olivia do?
She walked.
They added the E-D to show that it happened in the past.
Well, let's look at our story again to end the day.
The title is "Not Yet, Zeb."
Let's read the story again.
Can Zeb go with me?
Yes, he can.
But not yet.
Get a hat, Zeb.
Oh, I have a question for you.
What is it that Zeb had to get before he could go wherever he was going?
Right, right.
The last sentence tells you.
Get a hat.
He had to get a hat.
Whoa, this one's not working too good.
So I have to get another one.
Hat.
He had to get a hat, right!
All right, now I want you to notice right before we go, that every sentence begins with an uppercase letter, because a sentence has to have an uppercase letter at the very beginning, that's right.
Well, it's time for us to go.
We've learned so much today.
Don't forget that tomorrow is reading day!
That's right, we have some books that we're gonna look at.
I'm so excited about it.
I hope you are too, and I hope to see you tomorrow!
Oh, I'm so excited.
Bye!
