Hey, welcome back to Discovery Ranch.
I'm Mr. Dawson, and I'm here to take you on discovery so you can learn how to read and write!
I was just enjoying my book about Clifford.
I love Clifford.
He's a cool pet.
Do you have a pet?
I have a pet.
I have a pet dog, and his name is Obie.
Oh, I'm excited about today, because it's writing and reading day!
Yes it is!
Oh, we're gonna do so many things today.
By the way, don't forget, if you will write to me and tell me something you've learned on the program right here at Valley PBS, I will send you an activity book!
Well, let's get started so that we can have, or you can have something to write about.
Here we go.
What is our question today?
Our question today is, how do you take care of different kinds of pets?
Would you take care of a dog the same way you would take care of a cat, or a turtle?
Hm, we're talking about animal pals, and talking about animal pals, I'd like to show you some of my books over here that talk about pets.
I have "Spot Goes to School."
I love Spot.
And then I have "Curious George," who doesn't love "Curious George"?
And then I have a book, one of my favorite, it's called "Perfect the Pig."
It's about a pet pig.
You can find these books, I'm sure, some of them on SORA!
Yes, take a look on SORA and find some of these books.
Let's go back over here and look at the book for today.
I have this book.
The title of this book is "The Birthday Pet."
What pet do you think they're gonna be talking about in this book?
Right, the cover gives you a clue.
It might be a turtle.
Not sure!
We'll have to read it and find out.
Remember, this is the front cover, this is the back cover, and this is the spine that holds the book together.
Now, this book is definitely, this is definitely a narrative book.
It's a book just to have fun.
Ooh, I know it's gonna tell us so many things, I'm sure.
Now, I want to tell you a couple of things.
In this book, they're going to give you clues to what animals are in there, because they're gonna give you a word that might rhyme with the word, the animal that's in there.
So be looking for that.
And also remember, remember that when teachers read a book, they're gonna always ask you questions to see if you're really listening, and today I have two questions.
I'm going to ask you to see whether or not you have really been listening.
Are you ready?
The title of the book is "The Birthday Pet."
I hope you enjoy my book.
Here we go.
"The Birthday Pet," written by Ellen Javernick and illustrated by Kevin O'Malley.
"The Birthday Pet."
"It was Danny's birthday, and his folks said he could get any kind of animal he wanted for a pet.
Danny thought it over before he went to bed.
'All I really want is a turtle,' he said.
But instead, Dad said, 'You don't want a pet that sits still like a log.'
So he went out and got Danny a dog.
The dog knocked Danny over when they went outside to play.
If Danny took her walking, she always ran away.
'How's the dog?'
asked his father.
Danny shook his head.
'All I really want is a turtle,' he said.
But instead, Mom said, 'A turtle's not cuddly or soft like a mitten.'
So she went out and got Danny a kitten.
The kitten was cuddly, but it made Danny sneeze, and he always had to get it down from the trees.
'How's the kitten?'
asked his mother.
Danny shook his head.
'All I really want is a turtle,' he said.
But instead, his big brother said, 'You ought to pick a pet more exciting than that.'
So he went out and got Danny a rat.
The rat's beady eyes were a scary sight, and the rat kept Danny up when it gnawed in the night.
'How's the rat?'
asked his brother.
Danny shook his head.
'All I really want is a turtle,' he said.
But instead, his older sister said, 'You would like a turtle?
A turtle is absurd.'
So she went out and got Danny a bird.
The bird only nipped.
It didn't even talk.
It was sort of pretty, but it had a nasty squawk.
'How's the bird?'
asked his sister.
Danny shook his head.
'Not one of you listened to anything I said!'
So instead, his family got Danny a turtle with a nice hard shell.
Danny couldn't wait for his show-and-tell.
The turtle blinked her eyes and never made a sound.
She played peekaboo as she crawled around.
He fed her bugs and lettuce, and he made a turtle gym.
Danny thought the turtle was the perfect pet for him.
So Dad kept the dog, his brother kept the rat, his sister kept the bird, and Mom kept the cat.
Danny kept the turtle, and that was the end of that."
Did you enjoy that book?
Now, what kind of pet did Danny want?
Right, he wanted a turtle.
He wanted a turtle.
Yes, a beautiful turtle!
I like turtles because you can put them in their pen, and then they're kind of quiet.
They don't make noise.
So what a perfect pet for Mr. Dawson too!
But here's the problem.
Did Danny's family think that that was the pet that he needed to have?
No.
No, they didn't.
So here's my next question.
Actually, there's four questions.
Are you ready?
What kind of pet did Dad want him to have?
Right, a dog!
A dog!
Yes.
He wanted him to have a dog.
But he didn't want a dog.
What did he want?
He wanted a turtle!
Ah, so my next question is, is what did Mom want him to have?
Wasn't a turtle, what was it?
That's right!
It was a kitten, a kitten!
Yes.
She gave him, she wanted to, well, she give him a kitten, but that's not what he wanted!
What did he want?
A turtle.
And then brother, what did brother get him?
Did he get him a turtle?
No.
What did the brother get?
Ah, yes.
A rat.
A rat?
Is that what Danny wanted?
No!
What did Danny want?
A turtle.
Okay, here's my last question.
Are you ready?
What did sister get?
Right, right, and that's where I want to look right now.
I want to look at that page right here.
Let me read it.
It says, "But instead his older sister said, 'You would like a turtle?
A turtle is absurd.'
So she went out and got Danny a..." What did she get him?
Right, she got him a bird!
Right!
She got Danny a bird.
Oh my gosh, is that what he wanted?
No, he didn't want that.
He wanted the turtle.
So when he talked about it, what happened?
That's right, they finally decided to listen and say, "Okay, we'll get you a turtle."
And did he love that turtle?
Oh, yes, he did.
Now, what happened to the other pets?
Right, they kept the pets themselves.
So each person in the family kept the pet that they bought.
That's exciting.
That's exciting.
So what I want to do right before we write, I want to take a look at this passage of the story right here, and I want you to look and see that the very first letter is upper case.
Right, and then there's punctuation at the end.
There you go.
Two parts of what makes a sentence, and then, asked is the verb.
Who asked?
His brother asked.
So there you have it.
You have upper case first letter, the punctuation, you have the verb, and then you have the noun.
That's what makes the sentence.
Remember, there's four parts to making a sentence, and you'll notice that there's spaces between each word.
Well, I want to end up looking up here.
It says this.
What rhyming word does the author use to predict Danny's next pet?
Here it is.
What word did the author use to predict the next pet?
Right, right!
It's the word absurd, absurd!
So what word rhymed with absurd?
What did she get him?
A bird.
Okay, here we go.
I'm going to attempt to draw a bird.
Are you ready?
Here we go right here, so we can remember it.
Here's my bird.
Then he has to have wings, and there's his eyes and his beak, and maybe his legs.
There you go.
There you go.
So right here, what does it say?
Danny's next pet is a... What was it?
Bird!
Okay, here's where we're gonna do our skills.
What was the first phoneme in bird?
Buh, ur, duh.
Have all the phonemes.
Buh, ur, duh.
what was the first phoneme?
Buh.
Buh is for B.
Now, ur, I'll have to give it to you.
Ur is for I and R, and then what's the last phoneme?
Duh, duh is for D. We spelled bird.
Danny's next pet is a bird.
What do we do now?
Right, we have to have that period.
So we finished it.
Danny's next pet is a bird.
We had so much fun today.
I hope you had fun all this week.
I hope you will join me next week.
We can learn more things.
Come back, all right?
Let me get my jacket, so it's time for me to go.
Bye!
