Hey, how are you?
I'm Mr. Dawson.
I'm here to take you on discoveries at the ranch so you can learn how to read and write.
You caught me, I'm kind of embarrassed, 'cause I was putting everything away so that I can get ready, because after tomorrow's show, guess what I'm going to do?
That's right, I'm going gold panning.
I'm so excited to get away from the ranch for a little bit.
Actually, it's one of my rivers that's right off where I plant all my apples.
So, but I'm gonna get ready.
Just like right here, every day when you come, you're getting yourself ready to read and write!
It's so exciting.
Some of you probably are already doing it, and that's exciting as well.
Remember, when you write to me, right here, and send it right here to Valley PBS, or you can email me, I will send you an activity book.
Send me something that you've learned this week, and I will send you that book.
All right, well, remember, last week I talked to you that you guys have learned so much, that now I have to do two days of reading and writing.
Oh my gosh, I'm so excited.
Let's get started.
Let's come over here and see what our essential question is for today.
Here it is.
Here's a nice picture of this person riding a bike.
And it says, Moving Along, and here is the question.
What can help you go from here to there?
What kind of things can help you get from one place to another?
There are so many things, like what is she using?
Right, she's using a bike!
She's using a bike.
There's a lot of things.
Well, in our story today, they're using a truck.
Today's story is "When Daddy's Truck Picks Me Up."
Remember, this is the front cover, and this is the back cover, and this is the spine, right.
Now, remember we were talking about how books can be informational, or they can be narrative.
Remember, narrative means it's a story, and informational means it has a lot of information.
Both kinds of books are important, and they're good for us to read.
This one happens to be a narrative story.
But last week, I also talked about two words.
I talked about fiction and nonfiction.
So remember that fiction means it's not true.
No, it's not true.
And non-fiction means yes, it is true.
What I want you to do, part of your job today is when we watch this book and listen to it, I want you to decide is this book a fictional book or a non-fictional book?
So after we watch it, that's the first question we're going to decide, fiction or nonfiction?
Now remember, every time that we read a book, you know teachers love to ask questions to see if you were really listening.
And this time I have three questions, three questions.
You know what, I'll even tell you the questions right now so you can look for 'em.
The first question is, why is the boy excited?
Why is the boy excited?
And the next question is, why is the boy upset when school ends?
Listen for that part of the book.
And the last one is, what does the dad do when he sees his son?
All right, those are the three questions I'm gonna ask.
So pay attention so that you can can know those answers when I ask you.
Maybe, maybe that's one of the things that you're gonna write to me about when you're getting your, when you want your book, is tell me the answer to one of these questions.
I hope you enjoy this book, "When Daddy's Truck Picks Me Up."
Here we go.
"When Daddy's Truck Picks Me Up," by Jana Novotny Hunter.
Illustrated by Carol Thompson.
"When Daddy's Truck Picks Me Up."
"It's Daddy's turn to pick me up.
I get up fast today!
Daddy drives a tanker truck, and he comes a long, long way.
I love to ride in Daddy's truck.
He picks me up from school.
Then I have Dad to myself.
We think that's so cool!
(gentle music) My daddy's picking me up today.
I'll wave Mom a big goodbye.
I just can't wait.
Just can't wait!
Daddy's coming, that's why!
'Love you!'
Heading down the highway with his engine thumping, roar, rumble, roar!
My Daddy's coming.
When it's Daddy's turn to pick me up, I make the day go zoom.
I drive my big red tanker truck.
It's my time with Daddy soon.
Thundering through the tunnel, headlights help to see.
Bursting out the other end, Daddy's coming for me.
Crawling through my tunnel, burrowing like a mole.
Going darker and deeper into the big, big hole!
Zooming zigzag down the hill, singing our favorite tune.
Rocking, rolling, roaring, Daddy'll be here soon!
I'm waiting and waiting so hard.
I hum our favorite song.
Humming through my sandwich, 'Daddy, don't be long!'
Filling up his fuel tank, checking the tanker's load.
Getting something just for me, then Daddy's back on the road.
When Daddy picks me up, I paint his smile big as can be.
It's bursting off the paper, the way Daddy smiles at me.
Shifting down to first gear, taking that bridge real slow.
Crawling like a giant snail, still a way to go.
School's getting out now.
The grownups are on time.
They wave and kiss and pick up their kids.
All the daddies.
Where's mine?
Stuck in heavy traffic, engine running hot.
Grinding down, braking hard, slowing to a stop.
I'm making Daddy hurry up.
C'mon, Dad, don't be slow.
I'm waiting hard.
I want you now.
I really need us to go!
When is Daddy coming?
Soon.
When?
Screeeech!
'Here I am!'
'Daddy!'
Then Daddy picks me up, he swings me round and round.
And it's me and Dad, Dad and me, whee!
Now we are together.
We won't wait one more minute.
Daddy's truck takes off so fast with me and Daddy in it."
Bye!
Did you like the story?
I did too.
You know why I like that story?
Because I'm a dad, and when I see my kids, every time I see my kids, I get excited, especially now that they're grown up and gone away.
Well, let's take a look.
Remember, we talked about how we're going to ask whether this book is fiction or nonfiction.
Remember, fiction is it's not a true story, and non-fiction means it is a true story.
So what do you think about this book?
Well, there might be somebody who drives a truck like that, and has a boy that they picked up from school, but it doesn't say who it is and all that good stuff that gives me enough information to say that it's nonfiction.
So this book is a fictional book.
That's right.
It's a fictional book.
It's not true.
It could, maybe it could be, but it's not.
All right, let's see if you can remember and answer the questions.
You ready?
The first question is, why is the boy so excited?
Right!
His dad has been gone, he drives a truck.
He's been gone a long time, and it's time for him to go to be with his dad.
Isn't that cool?
Yes!
Being with your, if you haven't seen your mom or dad in a long time and you get to see 'em, whoo, I'm excited!
That's for sure.
Okay, here's my next question.
Why is the boy so upset at the end of school?
He was so upset.
Right, he was upset because all the other kids were getting picked up by their moms or their dads, but his dad was nowhere to be seen.
He got kind of stuck in traffic, I think.
But he said, he said, "I want to see my dad, I'm excited!"
All right, and my last question, you ready for my last question?
My last question is what does the dad do when he sees the son?
Oh, I marked it right in the book, 'cause it's so cool.
What does he do?
Yes, he gets his son and swings him around!
Does it look like they're so excited to see each other?
Yes.
They're so excited.
It looks like they haven't seen each other in such a long time, that now they're just so excited, swinging around.
Oh, that reminds me of a time with my dad.
I hadn't seen him in a long time, and when I saw him, oh my goodness, I wanted just to be with him all the time.
So good.
All right.
So I want to end up, I'm looking right here, and it says, "When Daddy's Truck Picks Me Up."
How do the author and illustrator help to tell how the boy feels?
Write and draw the clues.
Okay, let me come over here to the other side so I can draw a picture.
Remember, I'm gonna do my best when I draw.
Here I go.
I know that he's feeling happy and excited.
I can tell, look at their faces!
So guess what I'm going to draw?
That's right.
(marker scribbling) I'm gonna put a big old smile on there, because he's happy and excited.
And here's my sentence.
The boy feels, that's the start, and I want to say the boy feels happy and excited.
So I need to put happy and excited.
Now, if I'm gonna put happy, what would be the very first phoneme?
Huh, happy.
Huh is for H. H-A-P-P-Y.
Happy and.
And is a sight word!
How do you spell and?
Yes, A-N-D. And then excited.
He was excited.
E-X-C-I, oh, I'm gonna run right over here.
T-E-D.
The boy feels happy and excited.
Now, to make it a sentence, what do I need?
I'm forgetting one thing.
Do you remember what it is?
Right, it's the period.
It has to have a punctuation.
Now we're done.
The boy feels happy and excited.
Here it is.
The boy feels happy and excited.
So nice.
Did you enjoy that book today?
I really enjoyed that book.
It was so cool.
I love to see my dad.
I want you to know that I had a great time today reading this book, and guess what, tomorrow we'll have another one for you.
That's right!
So be back tomorrow.
Are you ready?
I'll be ready.
We'll see you.
Bye.
