I'm Mr. Dawson, and I'm here to take you on discoveries so you can learn how to read and write.
Join me here each day so we can go on discoveries together.
And remember, if you'll write to me, guess what I'm going to do?
That's right, I'm going to send you an activity book.
So write me at the station at Valley PBS or at the email address, and I'll send you an activity book.
All right, before we get started, I have to tell you something exciting.
Guess what?
Today.
Yes, today is St. Patrick's Day.
Oh, I had to think, what could I do, what could I do?
Oh, I have it.
Ta-da!
I have my hat.
Another hat.
Oh yes, I'm excited about my green derby.
So let's get started right now with some daily phonemic awareness.
Are you ready?
This is a new game.
This is called phoneme categorization.
And this is what you have to do.
You have to find which picture does not belong by listening to the beginning phoneme.
Are you ready?
Here we go.
I'm going to give you the three picture names, and then you listen to the phoneme and find the one that doesn't belong.
Here we go.
Zipper, goat, girl.
Which one does not belong?
Zipper, goat, girl.
Right!
Zipper.
'Cause zipper has z in the beginning, and the rest of these have g. G, g, goat.
G, g, girl.
Nice job.
All right, let's look at the next one.
Here's the pictures.
Nail, moth, night.
Nail, moth, night.
Which one doesn't belong?
Awe, you guys are not fooled at all.
Yes, moth does not belong because its beginning phoneme is m. And these two have n, nail, night.
Nice job.
Okay.
Let's look at our last three pictures.
This is vine.
This is vest.
And this is water.
Which one doesn't belong?
Right!
It's water.
W, w. It has w in the beginning.
These two have v. So these two belong and water does not.
So tremendous that you found all of those that didn't belong.
So exciting.
Well, that was way too easy for you.
So, guess what we need to do?
Well, we need to do our sight words.
Remember with sight words, they're very important to put them in our brain so that when we see them, we know them.
And then, when we want to write them, we'll know, we'll know how to write them.
Are you guys ready?
Here we go.
Let's do it together.
Like.
L-I-K-E spells like.
To.
T-O spells to.
Can.
C-A-N spells can.
A.
Easy huh?
A spells a.
And.
A-N-D spells and.
I. I spells I.
See.
S-E-E spells see.
The.
T-H-E spells the.
If.
I-F spells if.
We.
W-E spells we.
Nice job.
Nice job.
Now, let's talk about adjectives.
You remember, we've been talking about adjectives all week, and remember that an adjective is a describing word that tells more about something.
Adjectives can come before or after a naming word.
But when you use adjectives, they still have to make sense.
Now here's my sentence.
The mole is mm.
And I have a lot of adjectives down here.
Let's see if some of them work, or if they don't work.
Let me see.
If I did this one.
The mole is big.
I've seen big moles.
Sure, that would work.
So I'll put it right there.
How about this one?
The mole is yellow.
Well, I've never seen a real mole be yellow.
So that adjective, even though it's an adjective, it doesn't work.
So I'm going to put it down here, even though it's an adjective.
Let's try another one.
Oh, here's one.
Let's do silly.
Silly.
The mole is silly.
Ah, I'm going to take that one, I'll tell you why.
Because the story this week has a silly mole.
Yes, the mole is silly in our story this week.
So I'm going to keep that one.
Oh, let's do maybe one more.
How about long?
Long.
Let me get long and put it on there.
The mole is long.
That is an adjective, but that one really doesn't work.
I've never seen a really long mole.
They're really small.
And I don't think that one works, so I might take that one and put it down here.
That was awesome.
I better stop there because we have to do some other things.
But adjectives, remember an adjective is a describing word that tells more about something.
And we use adjectives to make the sentence a little more interesting.
And so, just like on this one, the mole is silly.
If I put silly in there, what do I know about the mole?
The mole is silly.
Right!
I like using adjectives.
All right.
It's time for us to review our letters.
Have you been doing these letters with me?
Remember, it's all about putting them in our brains and leaving them there so that when we see them in books, we'll be able to sound them out and get the words that they're in.
That's why we practice these.
Practice every day.
Are you guys ready here?
Here we go.
O, octopus, o. R, rose, wr.
F, fire, ph.
A, apple, a. L, lemon, l. N, nest, n. C, camel, c. X, box, x. J, jump, ge.
E, egg, e. U, umbrella, u.
All right, and the U is the letter that we're learning.
Remember that U is a vowel, a vowel.
And vowels are important because they usually in kindergarten have two phonemes.
They can say their sound, and that's what they say most of the time.
And they can also say their name.
U!
Yes.
And that's what we've been studying about with our letter U.
And where there was clues, there was clues.
And one of the clues was the U, the blank for a letter, and then the E. And the E is the clue telling the U, hey U say your name.
So right now, if I was to put my hand over this E right here, and I pronounced it out, it was cut.
Cut.
Did you see that?
But that E is there, and it's a clue to tell the U, don't say your sound, say your name.
So, if I put that here look.
Look what color I'm using.
Green, because green goes with Saint Patrick's Day.
There you go.
So now, when I sound it out, the E is telling the U to say his name, so now it becomes what?
Cute.
Cute.
Cute.
Did you see that?
It's the same thing on the next one.
If I just put the U there, and then I forget about that E, I might say cub.
Is that a cub?
No, no.
And that's why the E is there, is to give you that clue to say, oh wait, I can't say uh.
I can't say uh.
I have to say U. Cube.
Cube.
Cube.
Isn't that awesome?
Oh, okay.
Now, I want to show you something that's going to be kind of special.
Are you guys ready?
I have a story here.
I have a story.
And I want you to look at it, because look, it seems like this has a U blank, and a E. Now sometimes when we talk English, and we look at English, it can be confusing.
It can be confusing.
Because this says Luke.
I can't say Lyouke.
That doesn't make sense.
So guess what?
Sometimes the U blank E and some other clue combinations will say Luke.
Luke.
Luke.
You just have to be careful and make sure you're paying attention to those.
So this one says, "A Good Time for Luke."
"Luke is five.
"He can run quick.
"We like to play with Luke."
And there it is, U.
"Set up a date for Luke!
"Jot Luke a quick note.
"We can have a good time.
"We are here for Luke.
"Deb can set it up, up, up!
"Tim has a bit of tape to fix a rip.
"Mike can make a big cake.
"He can make it in a tin pan.
"June can use a red tube."
There it is, do you see that?
There you go, June.
It has that U sound again.
And tube, tube, it does too.
So sometimes, like I was saying, it can say it's phoneme and it can say its letter.
And here it's saying U, and that is the long U sound.
"Look!
June can tape it up on top.
"Luke can take it home.
"Luke is a fun kid in luck!"
Ah, we're going to stop right there boys and girls.
We had so much fun learning about the long letter U sound.
And we did adjectives, and then we've done sight words.
Oh, and then we found out the phoneme that didn't belong.
Well, you know what's going to happen tomorrow, it's going to be our reading day.
So be here with me so we can do it together.
We'll talk to you later.
Bye.
