Hey, welcome back to Discovery Ranch, I'm Mr. Dawson, and I'm here to take you on discovery so you can learn how to read and write.
Join me here each day, so we can go on discoveries together.
Remember, if you will write to me at the studio, @valleypbs or email me, I will send you an activity book.
Yes, write to me and tell me something you've learned this week and I will send you an activity book.
Well, let's get started.
Right now it's time for daily phonemic awareness.
And look what we're going to do, we're doing phoneme segmenting.
Oh my goodness, it's gonna be so exciting.
Look at these picture cards.
We're going to think about these.
We're going to sound them out, and then we're going to spell them, are you ready?
Our first one is fan.
Get your hand up, are you ready?
Here we go, let's do it, slow motion, slow so we can get all the phonemes, here we go, F A N, how many phonemes?
Three, okay, let's segment them so that we can write them.
What was the first phoneme?
F is four F right, here we go.
Oh my goodness.
Okay, what was the middle phoneme?
F A, A is for A right.
And what was that last phoneme?
F A N, N is for N, good job.
So I'll put that in there now we've segmented it, and now we put the letters that go with each of those phonemes and we spelled the word fan.
What's this one?
This is game, game are you ready to sound it out?
Get that hand up, are you ready?
Here we go, slow motion slow.
G A M E, How many phonemes?
Three, right, but that middle phoneme, that vowel is saying it's name, so there's probably gonna be four letters.
Remember those clues?
What was the first phoneme?
G, G is four G, right.
What was the middle phoneme?
A, so I'm gonna put an A.
And what was that ending phoneme?
M, right so I'm gonna put an M. Now, right now, if I just left it like that, yeah, that's right, it would say am G A M, gam.
We want it to say game, so what's the clue?
Right, I'm gonna put that E at the end because the E is telling the A to say its name.
Oh, you guys are amazing.
Okay, let's do our last one.
Jet, jet, have that hand up, are you ready?
Here we go, slow emotion slow, J E T, how many phoneme?
Three, great job.
Okay, let's segment them and get the letter that goes with each phoneme.
What was the first phoneme?
J, J is for J right, right.
And what was the middle phoneme?
E, E is for, E, nice job, my goodness look how smart you guys are.
All right, and what was the last phoneme?
J E T, T is for T yes, T. Look at that, that is amazing.
We spelled the word fan, game, and jet.
Amazing, that was great segmenting.
What should we do now?
Oh, I know, follow me over to the site white board so we can do our sight words.
I'm so excited about this because we've been learning these sight words and we're gonna learn them all week, are you ready?
Here we go, go, G O spells go.
She, S H E spells she, little, L I T T L E spells little.
Is, I S spells is, with, W I T H spells with, he, H E spells he, are, A R E, spells are.
My, M Y spells my, do, D O spells do, and you, Y O U, spells you.
Remember when you know those words and have them in your brain, guess what?
You'll know it when you see it in a book, or if somebody asks you to write, you'll be able to do it.
We're talking about books and writing and all that, let's talk about sentences.
Remember yesterday, I went to go visit professor Giza Bert and he told me all about sentences again, I'm excited about that.
And remember, I found out that there's four parts, a sentence has to have four parts.
It has to have an uppercase, first letter, the beginning letter has to be uppercase.
And then it also has to have punctuation, so it has to have a period or a question mark, or an exclamation point.
And then it has to have a naming word, a noun, and then it has to have a telling word, a verb.
Oh my goodness, let's look right here at some sentences.
It says, write C if the sentence is correct, if it's not correct, circle the mistake.
Ooh, so, I better get a pen out of here, and then we're gonna read this sentence.
Let's find if it has all four parts, are you guys ready?
This one says, Tony rode the bus.
Let's see, does it have an uppercase first letter?
Yes, does it have a punctuation?
Yes, it has a period.
Does it have a naming word?
Right, Tony, and what did Tony do?
He rode, so it has the noun and the verb.
So this one is correct, so I'm gonna put a C here.
Let's take a look at the next one.
Jo ate her lunch.
Okay, so does it have an upper case first letter?
Yes, does it have punctuation?
Yes, does it have a noun?
Right, it's Jo, that's a person.
And what did Jo do?
She ate, so, it has all four parts, so this is correct.
Okay, let's take a look at the last one, are you ready?
The cat slept all day.
Are you ready?
Let's see, does it have an uppercase first letter?
Oh, no, it did not, you're right.
Look, there's no upper case first letter, so that's a mistake, we're gonna have to fix that.
Okay, does it have a punctuation?
Yes, and then does it have the noun?
Right, it does the cat.
And what did the cat do?
It slept, so that's the verb.
So the only thing that this sentence is messed up on is the upper case letter.
So let's fix that.
Let me put this here, and I have to make sure that it's uppercase, the cat slept all, and I don't think I have enough room here so I'm gonna do a return sweet, day.
Make sure I do my period, there you go.
So now we fix that and it has the upper case first letter, the cat slept all day.
How amazing was that?
We found one that wasn't correct and we fixed it.
That's amazing, you guys are amazing, we did it.
All right, I'm gonna take this down and put it over here because it's time for us to review our letters and phonemes, are you ready?
Here we go, help me out.
J, jump, judge.
U, umbrella, u. O, octopus, o. R, rose, r. F, fire, f. A, apple, a.
Practicing these are so important.
L, lemon, l. N, nest, n. C, camel, c. E, egg, e. And remember, this is the one we're talking about today, E. Remember that the vowels have two sounds, that's right.
They can say their name or their phoneme, or they can say their name.
So, when I think of that, I know that it says E, and these are our clue words, you remember our clue letters.
When we see these right here in books, we can say that they are say E, so E blank E, E A, E E, blank Y or E, or blank I E blank, or blank E Y, all these when you see them in a book, they'll say E how exciting is that?
In fact, I wanna look at some pictures.
You guys wanna look at some pictures?
And let's see if we can find the ones that have that E phoneme.
Here we go, are you ready?
Let's look at this one.
This is a bee, let's sound it out and see if we can see the E sound.
B E E, yes that one has it.
How about this one, kite?
K I , no, not that one.
How about this one?
That one that he's pointing at himself, and says me, me, M E, do you hear it?
Yes, yes, there it is right there.
We want that one, how about this one, feet, feet, F E E T, F E E, yes, this one, we want this one for sure it had that E the long E sound.
Oh, and here's our little boy and his name is Pete.
P E T E, yes that one has it.
How about bed?
B E, no, how about this one, pen, pen, P E N, no, no, not that one.
How about this one face, face?
F A, no, no, no.
Okay, and how about this one?
Oh, this says week.
W E E K, yes, that one has it.
Oh, wonderful.
So we found one, two, three, four, five pictures that had that E sound.
So remember, let's go back here.
Remember all those that had E in them, are gonna have clues.
So if you see E blank E, E A, E E, E blank Y, blank I E blank, or blank E Y, it's gonna say E. Oh, we didn't get to our story today but that's okay, sometimes that happens we learned so many things today.
Come back tomorrow and we're gonna learn some more and I'll try to get to our story.
Oh, I'm so excited to see you guys back here tomorrow, bye.
