My name is Mr. Dawson, and I'm here to take you on discoveries so that you can learn how to read and write.
Join me here each day this week so you can go on some discoveries with me.
And remember, if you will write to me right here at Valley PBS, and tell me something you learned this week, I will send you an activity book.
I am waiting for some letters.
I can't wait to read 'em, and I can't wait to send out some activity books.
All right, here we go.
Are you guys ready to learn?
Oh, there's so many things to learn, and guess what?
Things are gonna change a little bit around here, because all my gosh, I'm not even gonna say anything.
We'll wait until later.
All right, let's do some daily phonemic awareness!
Yes, I'm excited about phonemic awareness, because today we're gonna play a game.
It's gonna be called the substitution game.
Do you remember playing that?
That's where I give you a word, and I say, "Change the phoneme to this phoneme, what's my new word?"
Are you ready to play?
Here we go.
My word is pit.
Can you say pit?
Puh, ih, t, pit.
I want to change the middle phoneme to aw.
If I change the middle phoneme in pit to aw, what's my new word?
Let me see.
Puh, aw, t. Pot.
Right, pot!
You did it!
Okay.
Let's do one more.
Oh, I'm so excited about this game.
All right, my next word is jam.
Can you say jam?
Jam.
Now, if I change the juh in jam to yuh, what's my new word?
So I have jam, juh, am, and I'm changing the juh in jam to yuh.
What's the new word?
Yam, yam.
Yam!
Wow, you did it!
Oh, I'm so excited.
You're getting really good at doing things where phonemic awareness is concerned.
All right, you know, it's time to do some sight words.
Guess what, I found some new sight words and I put 'em up here.
They're they're pretty yellow ones.
Oh, it's so exciting.
But what we're gonna have to do is we're gonna go across instead of down, so we get a few colors each day.
Are you ready to look at our sight words?
Remember, when you know these sight words in your brain, when you see them in a book, you'll say, "Oh, I know that word."
Or if you need to write the word, you can just get it right out of your brain and say, "Oh, I know how to write that word."
Are you ready?
Here we go.
But, B-U-T spells but.
Here, H-E-R-E spells here.
We, W-E spells we.
How, H-O-W spells how.
Does, D-O-E-S spells does.
You, Y-O-U spells you.
His, H-I-S spells his.
Of, O-F spells of.
The, T-H-E spells the.
Said, S-A-I-D spells said.
Come, C-O-M-E spells come.
And do, D-O spells do.
Those are our words.
Those are words for today.
Maybe if you see them somewhere, you'll be able to say, "Oh, I know that word.
We did it today on our sight word review!"
Yes.
Okay, here we go.
Let's do some phonics, but before we learn this, let's do some review.
Are you ready?
Here we go.
Say them with me.
A, apple, ah.
This is train, and it has the phoneme A.
A is for A. E, eh, egg.
Did that one wrong, but that's all right.
Oh, and this is tree, tree.
And it has the phoneme E. E is for E. I, insect, ih.
And this is five.
It has the phoneme I. I is for I. Aw, octopus, O.
There, now I'm getting it right.
It's been a long time since I've done this.
This is boat, and it has the phoneme O.
Did you hear it?
Boat.
O is for O.
Uh, umbrella, U.
(chuckles) Yes.
This is cube, cube.
It has the U sound, or sometimes it says oo.
And that's for U. Oh, digraphs.
Wuh is for W-H, whale.
Cheese, ch is for C-H or T-C-H.
Shell, sh is for S-H.
Thumb, th is for T-H. Oh, vowel teams.
Oy, O-I and O-Y is for OY.
Ow, like cow.
O-W and O-U.
Is that the last one?
No, uh, book.
Uh, O-O.
And then we have spoon.
We have O-O and O-blank-E and U and blank-E-W and U-E and O-U and blank-O-I-blank.
All those say OO.
And that's where we're done.
Oh, I'm so excited.
I'm so excited.
All right, so let's learn something new today.
I have a new vowel team.
Are you ready?
Oh, here it is.
What two letters are these?
It's A and R, yes!
Oh my goodness, and the picture, what is this picture?
Yes.
This is a picture of a star.
Do you hear that last sound in star, sss, tuh, ar, ar.
Yes.
A-R says R, isn't that kind of weird?
A-R, but it makes the sound of the letter!
How interesting is that?
AR!
So look at all these pictures that I have, and you're gonna hear AR in there.
Juh, ar, jar.
Cuh, ar.
Fff, arm.
Yuh, arn.
And then of course, star.
So this week we're gonna be learning about how A-R says R. Ooh, that's gonna be fun.
Now, this is where things are gonna be different.
We have, I'm gonna tell you about our essential question right now.
The essential question is what shapes do you see around you?
Because this week at the ranch, we're doing, oh my goodness, what's our- Hey, what are we doing?
- [Woman] A pizza farm!
- A pizza farm!
We're doing a pizza farm here at the ranch!
I'm so excited, 'cause it's gonna go right into our essential question.
In fact, I have a video that's gonna tell you a little bit more about our essential question.
Here you go.
- [Woman] Shapes all around us.
What shapes do you see around you?
(upbeat music) We can find shapes everywhere.
This ball is shaped like a circle.
Games have shapes.
This girl jumps across the squares.
Foods have shapes too.
This watermelon is shaped like a triangle.
Look at the buildings, see the squares and rectangles.
This boy builds with blocks of different shapes.
Which shapes do you see?
- Did you see all those shapes?
Those were amazing!
A lot of shapes!
In fact, that's what we're gonna talk about.
Look around the room and all the shapes that are around our room!
That's what we're gonna do this week.
We're gonna talk about shapes, and we're gonna write about shapes.
And remember, writing is nothing more than talking on paper.
In fact, right now, we're gonna look at another book called "Use a Shape" that's gonna talk more about shapes.
Let's watch this video.
"Use a Shape," by Lucy Long.
(upbeat banjo music) I like to draw houses.
I use shapes in my art.
I like to draw trucks.
I use shapes in my art.
I like to make a robot.
I use shapes in my art.
I like to make a quilt.
I use shapes in my art.
I like to paint pictures.
I use shapes in my art.
I like to paint pots.
I use shapes in my art.
Can you see the shapes?
Hey, did you see all the shapes there?
Look right here on the last page.
Do you see all the shapes they taught?
Look, just in the picture!
There's a square, and then there's a circle right there.
And look, there's even in here, the house.
There's a rectangle, and then a triangle.
Look at all those shapes.
That is so, so cool.
All right, we are going to write.
Every week, we're gonna write now.
And when we write, we have to remember the stages of writing, which is right over here.
Let's look over here and remind ourselves of the stages of writing.
Remember, we have to plan first, and once we plan, oh, that almost fell over.
It scared me.
Once we plan, we have to do a rough draft, which means write and revise, and then we're gonna edit to make sure it has all the parts, and then finally, we're gonna finish it up with writing.
Oh, I don't have much time.
Let's take a look at what we're gonna do.
Let's do some brainstorming right now.
What was our idea?
What do we think we're gonna write about?
Right, we're gonna write about shapes.
Maybe I'm gonna write about a circle, maybe.
There's one of the details.
You remember, we gotta get details.
Remember, that hamburger, you remember that?
The juicy part.
That's the middle of it.
And then maybe I'll talk about, ooh, I don't know, a triangle.
And then, you know what, maybe we'll talk about a star, 'cause that is the A-R in star, right?
AR, AR.
So there we have it.
There's our idea for writing this week.
We're gonna talk about shapes, and then maybe we'll do circles and triangles and stars.
That'd be awesome.
We've had so much fun, and our day has already run short and we have to go!
We've done so many things today.
We've learned about sight words and AR.
It's gonna be so much fun to do it again tomorrow.
Join me here so we can do some great learning together.
Bye!
