Good morning to all my friends on television.
How are you guys today?
I'm Mr. Dawson and we're here at Discovery Ranch showing you things that you can learn, so you can learn how to read and write.
Join me here each day so we can learn something new together.
Oh, we're gonna have some fun with some bugs.
And why am I talking about bugs?
Because, oh my goodness, at the ranch.
Oh my goodness.
We're having a little bit of a bug problem.
So we have to figure that one out for sure.
But let's get started.
But before we get started, I just remembered.
Don't forget if you will write to me and we're talking paragraphs, right?
If you will write to me and tell me something you learned, I will send you an activity book.
I know you want one.
So all you have to do is write.
I'm getting lonely over here 'cause nobody's writing to me.
I want you to write to me and I'll send you an activity book.
Well, let's get started.
What are we gonna do first?
That's right!
Daily phonemic awareness!
Hey, did you say it with me?
Oh yes!
Okay.
What are we gonna do today?
Oh, I know!
We're gonna do segmenting.
Segmenting.
I'm going to give you a word, and then we're going to go really slow.
Remember?
♪ Slow motion slow ♪ And sound out until we get all the phonemes.

Here's my first word.
My first word is fan.
Can you say fan?
Can you get your hand up.

You ready?
Here we go.
Here we go.
F-ah-n. How many phonemes?
Right.
Three.
Three.
That's great!
Let's do another one.

Let's do this one, bat.

Buh-ah-t. How many phonemes were there?
1, 2, 3, right.

What's the beginning phoneme?
Buh, right!
What's the middle phoneme?
Ah!
And what's the ending phoneme?
Th!
That's right!
And now if you knew those phonemes, do you think you could put the letters for those phonemes?
I bet you can.
Oh, let's do one more.

Let's do, ah... Oh!
Let's do fish.

Right!
It's a digraph.
And remember, a digraph is one sound made up by 2 letters.
Oh, I wonder what two letters says, sh?
Hmm, think about it.
Now, it's time for doing sight words.
Are you guys ready to do sight words?
Remember when we do our sight words, we are doing this so we can put it in our brain so that when we see 'em we'll know them.
And when we need to write them, we can just recall them right out of our brain and then spell it.
So we've been reviewing these, these are all the sight words that we've been learning all year.
Oh, I think there's 60 of them.
Do you know you know 60 words?
How amazing is that?
But we keep reviewing them.
Are you ready?

Let's stop there for today.
We'll do these throughout the week but I want you just to review these 12 right there.
Can you do that?
I bet you can.
All right.
Let's do some phonics.
And as we do it, let's review some of the vowel teams that we've learned.
Are you ready?
This is a boy.
And it has the phoneme, oi.
And these are the clues that tell you when to say oi, O-I and -_O-Y.
Here's another one.
Cow.
Ow.
Ou.
These are the clues of when to say ow, it's O-W and O-U.
And here's another one, book.
And it says, oo.
And there's only one way.
If you see O-O, sometimes it'll say, oo.
And then we did this one last week, spoon.

So sometimes, O-O is gonna say uh.
And sometimes it's gonna say, oh, just like, let me see this one back here.
I think this is it.
Yes!
Cow has O-U, and oo has O-U.
So sometimes, 2 letter combinations can have two different sounds.
You just have to learn them.

Here we go.
Now, what should we learn this week?

Let's look at this.
What is this?
This is a straw.
I'm looking right there where the arrow is.
Straw.
Listen to the sound, str-aw.
What's the ending sound that you hear?

So, I thought it would be appropriate to talk about bugs this week.
In fact, I have a video for you that will talk about bugs.
Let's watch this video.
- [Narrator] World of bugs.
What kinds of bugs do you know about?
(piano music) There are many kinds of bugs in nature.
A ladybug is a tiny bug with six legs.
It can crawl and fly.
A bee flies from flower to flower, it drinks nectar, the sweet liquid that's found inside flowers.
This caterpillar has colorful stripes.
It grips the leaf with its many legs.
What other kinds of bugs have you seen?
(piano music) - Did you like that video?
Oh my goodness.
Bugs are so cool, most of the time.
Hey, I have some bugs.
Look, I went on to talk about some bugs.
Here we go.
This one right here is called a Leaf Beetle.
This is a Leaf Beetle.
Let's take a close-up look at that.
It's an insect, I believe, 'cause it has some six legs.
Oh, that's pretty cool.
How about another bug?
How about this one?
A Gouda bug.
Look at that!
That's pretty cool.
A Gouda bug.
And then I have, oh, a Golden Scorpion.
Look at that one.
A Golden Scorpion.
That's pretty cool.
And then I have a Ghost Spider.
A Ghost Spider.
And then my last one is a Spiny Orb-Weaver.
Look how big that spider is.
Oh my goodness.
These are all bugs though.
All of these are bugs.
And that's what we're talking about this week.
Just like our book I have right here, the title is, I See a Bug!
by Susan Fallon and illustrated by Julia Seal.
And it's about a bugs.
But look at all the sight words.
I see a, do you see all those sight words?
That's amazing.
I hope you enjoy this story.
Let's watch it.
I See a Bug by Susanna Fallon, illustrated by Julia Seal.
Oh, no!
I see a bug!
It is okay.
That is not a bad bug.
It will be a butterfly.
Oh, no!
I see a bug!
It is okay.
It is a good bug.
It makes honey for us.
Oh, no!
I see a bug!
It is okay.
That bug is fun.
It can make light at night.
I see a bug.
I like bugs!
Did you enjoy that story?
I hope you did!
By the way, that story was a fiction story.
What does fiction mean?
Right.
It means it's not true.
Now, I have a couple of questions, pretty easy questions.
But at the beginning of the story, how did the boy feel about bugs?
You can see it in the picture here that the illustrator made, how did he feel?
Oh, the face tells us, I don't think he liked bugs very well.
But what about over here?
What over here?
How's he end up feeling about bugs?
Yes.
He feels happy.
Happy.
Well, we should write about bugs for sure.
Because we've been talking about bugs and let me get my writing chart up here.
This is my brainstorm storming chart.
And remember, let's go over the stages of writing.
Are you ready?
When I'm going to write, the first thing I have to do is plan.
I have to plan.
And after I do my plan, I just do my rough draft writing.
I just write as fast as I can because I want to get my thoughts down.
And then I'm gonna come back though.
I'm gonna edit.
I'm gonna edit.
And then finally, we're going to write about it.
Our final one.
So, let me get a pen over here because I want to talk about the ones that I want to talk about this week.
So our main idea is of course bugs, right?
Bugs.
But the three insects or bugs that I'm gonna talk about.
Let me see.
What should I talk about.
Oh, I know, I know.
First I want to talk about a spider.
So, maybe I'm gonna do a spider.
1, 2, 3, 4.
This is just gonna help me remember what it is, a spider.
And then, let me see what else.
A ladybug!
A ladybug.
Ooh.
They have dots on them.
That's gonna give me an idea.
And then the last one.
Oh, is a beetle.
Ooh, like that one we just showed, maybe.
I don't have a lot of colors, but it has six legs too.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
So there we go, that's just to remind me what I want to talk about.
So I'm gonna talk about a spider, a lady bug, and a beetle.
Oh, I can't wait.
We've learned so many things today.
And our time has already run out.
Can you believe it?
We've been talking about sight words and aw.
Oh, come back tomorrow.
And we're gonna do even more including writing.
We'll see tomorrow.
Have a great day.
Bye.
