Welcome back to our learning space.
My name is Ms. Lara.
Can you tell me your name?
I'm so excited that you made it back today.
Today is Tuesday, another fun day of learning.
So let's start off with our good morning song with our friend, the Chef, who's gonna help us sing.
Ready?
♪ Good morning ♪ ♪ Good morning ♪ ♪ It's a sunshine kind of day ♪ ♪ Come join Ms. Lara ♪ ♪ For some learning and some play ♪ ♪ Will we sing a song ♪ ♪ Of course we will ♪ ♪ Make our brain strong ♪ ♪ Like super strong ♪ ♪ So come along ♪ ♪ Yes come on friends ♪ ♪ For some learning and some play ♪ So today we have another fun day of activities planned around our book, "The Little Red Hen."
So let's check our visual schedule and see what we have going on.
So we're gonna do our emotional check-in today through a song.
So we're gonna sing a song to the tune of "Old MacDonald had a Farm" and he's gonna have a hen and he's gonna feel happy, sad, mad, lots of feelings like we all do throughout the day.
That's why it's important to check in, isn't it?
Then we're gonna do our weekly investigation with our book.
Today we're gonna focus on rhyming words.
They sound the same.
I'm gonna show you an activity you can do at home to practice.
And then we'll end our day with a goodbye song or a goodbye smooch, depending on how much time we have.

So for this, we're gonna make a big line down, a little curve up, which is a letter too, but not the one we need.
And a little line down, like this.
And it's the letter R, That's right.
R for red.
Red hen.
Now hen is a farm animal.
And Ms. Southern has a fun song for us to sing about the farm.
Let's watch together.
- Hi friends, it's me, Ms. Southern.
Can you say, "Hi Ms.

Before we get started, let's put on our thinking caps.

- So I'm so glad that you got to sing the real Old MacDonald song with Mrs. Southern and not just Ms. Lara's feelings made-up version.
So now it's time for us to review rhyming words.
Do you remember what rhyming words are?
That's right, they're words that sound the same.
So let's see if you remember.
I'm gonna look for some words that rhyme with hen, N, hm.
Let's look, what might rhyme with hen.
Does a pen rhyme with hen?
Pen, hen.
They both say N, they do rhyme.
So I'm gonna put a thumbs up right there.
And you can give me a thumbs up at home.
Let's look at another one.
How about hen, 10.
Hen, 10.
They both say N. They do rhyme, don't they?
Another thumbs up.
How about hen and nest?
Hen, nest.
Do they sound the same?
No, that's a thumbs down.
Rhyming words sound the same and hen and nest do not.
So let's give it a thumbs down.
Now I wanted to show you a way that you can practice this at home by making a rhyming basket.
So all the materials you'll need are a basket, and I used one that was left over from a celebration I had last week.
And items from around your house.
Now you can do this a couple of ways to practice rhyming.
You can make a rhyming basket, where you put things that rhyme inside, and then you have to go through and find the ones that rhyme.
But for this time of year, usually students are ready to produce a rhyme.
That means you show them an object and they have to tell you a word that rhymes with that.
We had a lot of fun adding things to our basket.
So I'm gonna show you what I added to my basket.
And then we'll try to rhyme with a couple of things.
So I added some dice, yarn, a star, some flour, just like the little red hen used, some bread, ooh yummy bread, a flower, a rock, and a beautiful shell that I kept and collected.
Look at the inside, isn't it shiny?
So let's see if we can make some rhymes with these things.
Let's see, what might rhyme with bread?
The rhyming words sound the same, bread.
I'll give you a clue.
It's something that you lay in and it has a pillow.
That's right, bed.
Bread, bed.
They both say ed, they rhyme.
Let's think of something else.
How about a rhyming word with star?
Star, what rhymes with star?
Ooh, how about something you drive and you have to wear a seatbelt?
Car, yes.
Star, car.
They both say ar.
Let's do a few more.
How about a rock?
I put this in my basket because I think all of you are wearing something that rhymes with rock.
Check your feet.
Yes, a sock.
Rock, sock.
They both say ock.
All right, let's see, let's do yarn.
Now this one you might not have around you unless you live out in the country.
I'm thinking of something that rhymes with yarn that farm animals might live in.
Hm, it's red, kind of pointy at the top.
It's a barn, that's right.
Yarn, barn.
They both say arn.
So you can see how you can make a rhyming basket this way and play multiple rounds.
Parents, it's so important for students to learn how to rhyme.
It helps them hear the patterns in the stories that they read.
So I'm gonna put my rhyming basket things away.
And I think we'll have just enough time for me to tell you what we're going to do tomorrow.
So tomorrow we're gonna work on some beginning sound.
Another key skill we need to learn how to read.
I'm actually gonna make some Play-Doh using a recipe on PBS Kids.
So if you have some Play-Doh handy, make sure you'll bring it tomorrow.
All right, boys and girls, we have time to sing our goodbye song.
You ready to sing with me?
Here it goes.
♪ A, B, C you later ♪ ♪ D E F G I'm gonna miss ya ♪ ♪ H I have to go now ♪ ♪ J K bye bye now ♪ ♪ L M N O I had a good time ♪ ♪ P Q R you gonna miss me ♪ ♪ S T U are my best friend ♪ ♪ V W X Y Z ♪ And you are, you're my very best friend.
Boys and girls, don't forget to check out the Sora app for more books about the farm.
That way you can come in tomorrow knowing all about the farm and beginning sounds.
All right, until I see you then, Ms. Lara's gonna give you a big smooch and a big squeeze.
She's gonna remind you to read and to play and to enjoy the rest of your day by thinking like a scientist, using your five senses.
You're gonna see and hear and smell and touch the world all around you.
And I'm gonna tell you what we're gonna do on Friday, which is gonna be so exciting.
We're actually gonna be bakers, like the little red hen, and make some bread.
So to finish off our session today, I'm gonna put my hat on and you put your hat on too to say goodbye.
Ready?
Oop!
Here it goes.
All right, my friends, we'll see you tomorrow.
