We're gonna do an emotional check-in.
And this week we've been studying the emotion surprised.
Can you make a surprise face?
(Mrs Lara gasps) That's right.
You might make a surprised face if you see an insect on the ground when you're taking a walk like we talked about.
Or if someone's surprised you with a big stack of pancakes for breakfast and you weren't expecting it.
We're gonna sing our song.
Cows in the Kitchen about farm animals that surprised the farmer by going into the human house.
That's so silly.
Then we're gonna go to our project place and work on our weekly investigation.
Our focus text for the week is the cow that went oink.

Take a look around your house.
Can you find something that rhymes with pear?
Here's a clue.
You have something that rhymes with pear on top of your head.
In my house, I found a bear with crazy hair on top of a chair next to a square.
He had quite a mean glare.
It gave me quite a scare.
Just kidding.
The bear in my house.
Doesn't like rock music.
Rhyming is so important as you learn how to read the words in books, isn't it?
And speaking of books you can check them out on Mrs Lara app.
And I hope that you do.
So for our project today we're actually gonna make this red barn out of recycled materials.
And we're gonna use this red barn for rhyming and beginning sound activity that I have planned for tomorrow.
Okay, so here are the materials that you'll need.
You'll need a box.
Cardboard, glue, paint or paper.
So this is the box that I have today.
It's a pasta box.
There was pasta in there.
So the first thing that you're gonna wanna do is you're gonna wanna make an opening for the farm animals to go in.
Have you ever been to a farm before?
I don't get to go to farms too often, but here where I live in the central Valley, there are a lot of farms nearby.
I should go to one.
So I'm cutting out a rectangle and you can see I'm using my helper hand to guide my box.
Okay, just enough for a door.
That's where animals are gonna go in.
Now you'll notice in my finished barn that I kind of have a roof set up like this.
Barns have kind of triangular roofs.
So to make that roof, I'm actually going to just kind of fold over like this.
A little piece of the cardboard box, here goes.
And of course, you know I'm gonna hold it together with some glue.
So let's put some glue on there.
♪ Glue, glue, glue glue.
♪ Here we go.
Not too much glue.
Ooh, you know the worst feeling is getting some glue all over you and it dries up and then you have to peel it off.
I never liked that some people do.
So I'm holding it down so it sticks together.
There we go.
Looks like I have to hold it a little longer.
And if it doesn't stick, that's okay, boys and girls because you'll have the time at home to hold it just a little longer.
A little more time than I have here.
So once you get your basic frame down, you're gonna wanna make something like this.
That'll really make it seem like a farm and a barn.
It's called a silo.
Now for this one, I used a paper napkin role but if you don't have that you can actually use two toilet paper rolls like this that you can tape together.
And I have time to do that and show you.
So here's my tape.
Tape like glue is an adhesive.
Ooh, super fancy word.
That means something that sticks things together.
Can you think of another adhesive?
Okay, so this is kind of the beginning of what our barn is going to look like.
Now I want it to be extra fancy.
I will glue this right on there so it wouldn't move.
Now parents it is so important that you make props to go along with the stories that you read.
Through play children really learn to express what their comprehension of the text is.
So here we go.
This is the beginning of it.
Next is the fun part.
We get to paint.
Now I'll tell you if you really want it to be covered in red you're going to wanna use paper.
Because the paint that I'm using is kind of thin and requires multiple layers.
But I wanted to use paint because I get to use this big paint brush that I had in my house.
Make me feel like I'm painting a real barn.
Ooh, here's the red paint.
Now I wonder why all or most barns are red.
Is that something you can investigate maybe with your family?
Why are most barns red?
I imagine it's so that the farmers can see them easily.
Maybe it has something to do with the animals.
If you find out, will you let me know?
All right, here we go.
Painting it over, painting it down.
And of course we're gonna get our silo.
What we're gonna do tomorrow is we're gonna play a rhyming game where we're gonna guess what's in the big red barn.
There some new different animals in there.
Sheep and a pig.
There's a dog and a cat, a cow if it fits, you know, cows are very large.
All right.
I hope some of you are wearing your cow mask.
That'd be so much fun.
Okay, let's paint a little bit of the roof here the top edge that didn't wanna stick too well.
I'll stick it when the cameras are off and I have a little more time.
It goes up like that.
Looking a little like a barn, missing couple of edges here.
Okay.
Now the next step is going to be to add your decorations.
Now, if we don't get to finish this today we'll finish it again tomorrow, before we play our game.
but I wanna add a window.
So I'm gonna use some black paper and I'm gonna cut out a square.
Now a square has four sides, doesn't it?
And it has four sharp corners.
Notice I'm using my helper hand to kind of hold things together.
Here we go.
Ha, ha rectangle actually.
Let's glue that on.
And boys and girls, it's looking like we're gonna finish decorating this tomorrow.
So I'll put my window on now the paint is a little wet and we'll stop right here.
I hope that you get to make this project.
And if you do, please send me a picture and a note here at the station.
They're gonna put the address up in just a little bit.
Oh, there it is.
All right.
