Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(cheerful music) Hello, little learners, welcome back to Camp Read-A-Lot, the place where we read books, sing songs, and keep our brains strong all summer long.
My name is Miss Lara, can you tell me your name?
I'm so excited that you made it back today.
We have a lot of work to do.
Let's get started with a good morning song, does that sound okay?
Does that sound okay to you, Darlita?
You know, Darlita, in the book we're reading, you're the villain of the story.
I know!
Do you know what a villain is?
Yes, the bad guy.
But you're not.
You help me sing songs.
Ready?
♪ Good morning, good morning, it's a sunshine kind of day ♪ ♪ Come join Miss Lara for some learning and some play ♪ ♪ Will we sing a song ♪ Of course we will!
♪ Make our brains strong ♪ Like, super strong.
♪ So come along ♪ Yes, come on, friends!
♪ For some learning and some play ♪ All right, let me put Darlita away.
Darlita the dragon loves to be down here, and I'll run through our plan for the day today.
We're focusing on the text "The Paper Bag Princess".
See?
Look at my setup.
I hope you're wearing your paper crown today.
We're gonna start off by exploring the feelings of our main character Elizabeth.
Ooh, she started off happy then sad then upset, and in the end, how did she feel?
Do you remember?
We'll sing a song to help us remember how she felt throughout the story, and then we'll review our text and go through our sequence of events and finish off making paper bag puppets so that you can act out the story at home.
Does that sound like a good plan?
Okay, let's get started by reviewing how our character felt in the book.
So you'll remember our main character was Elizabeth.
Now, look at this picture from our story.
Do you remember who Elizabeth is looking at?
Yes, she's looking at Prince Ronald, isn't she?
Prince Ronald is not so nice to her in the end, but Elizabeth loves him.
They're going to be married, and in this picture, she's feeling in love and happy.
And then, of course, what happens?
The dragon comes along and burns all of her things, her castle, her clothes, and takes away Prince Ronald.
How is she feeling now?
Quite angry.
Wouldn't you be if something came and took all of your things?
And in this picture, Elizabeth is wearing a paper bag dress and she goes in and saves Prince Ronald, but what does Prince Ronald do?
He scolds her and says, you need to be a proper princess in order to rescue me.
Oh, how would that make you feel if you just did something nice for someone and they rejected you and were mean?
She was quite upset.
So let's sing our song to help us remember how she's feeling throughout the story.
Remember the tune?
It's to "Bingo".

♪ There was a princess that I know ♪ ♪ Who was upset all the time, oh ♪ ♪ U P S E T ♪ ♪ U P S E T ♪ ♪ U P S E T ♪ ♪ She was upset all the time, oh ♪ Now it's important that just like we review the feelings of our main character, Elizabeth, that you take some time to review how you're feeling and just like in the book, your feelings may change throughout the day, so make sure you check in on yourself and those around you.
Okay, right now we're gonna review the sequence of our story, are you ready?
I have my chart right here all in pictures, and we may refer to the book to check to see how we're doing.
So, it's "The Paper Bag Princess" by Robert Munsch.
At the beginning of the story, Elizabeth was very much so in love with Prince Ronald, right?
And she had fancy, expensive clothing, didn't she?
And she lived in a fancy castle.
Let's check.
When I check, I look in my book and I use it as a reference, so let's go through and find that page.
Look at that.
There she is in her beautiful princess outfit.
Then what happens next?
Ooh, there's a huge dragon that comes along, and he takes a deep breath and he breathes out fire!
And everything burns down, and Elizabeth is left with just a paper bag for a dress.
She feels very angry, but does she let that stop her?
Even though she's angry, she decides to chase that dragon, and if you remember from the story, she chased the dragon by following all the burnt forests and the horses' bones, ew.
And then what did she do?
She went to the dragon's cave and she knocked on the door three times, knock knock knock, and she said, hey dragon, I heard you were the smartest and the fiercest.
Can you burn 10 forests with one fiery breath?
And what does the dragon do?
The dragon decides to, yes, burn all those forests with his fiery breath, and does Elizabeth stop there?
No, I think she has a plan.
She wants to tire out the dragon, doesn't she?
And she says, hey dragon, if you're the smartest and the fiercest around, can you fly around the world in 20 seconds?
And what does the dragon do but fly around the world in 20 seconds, and just when he's tired, Elizabeth says, okay, now do it again, and the dragon, wanting to be known as the fiercest and smartest dragon, decides, okay, I'll do it again.
By this time, the dragon is very tired.
He's snoring.
(snores) Sounds like my dog when he's sleeping.
And what does Elizabeth do?
She tiptoes over the dragon, and she opens the door, and she sees Prince Ronald!
And of course she's feeling like, Prince Ronald, my love, he's gonna be so excited to see me!
But instead, what happens?
Prince Ronald takes a good look at her, just like in our chart, and he makes a mean face and he says, look at you, Elizabeth!
You have dust all over you, you're wearing a paper bag, you have dirt on your face.
I can't marry you, you come back when you're nice and clean and a proper princess.
Oh no!
How do you think that made our princess feel?
Not so nice.
So what does our princess do?
Look at the picture.
Do you think that's a happy ending?
I think so.
She walks off into the sunset, and she calls Prince Ronald a name.
You're not supposed to call names, but this is what she said.
She said, Prince Ronald, you're a bum!
And she decided she didn't love him anymore, because when you truly love someone, you don't just love them for what they look like, you love them for what's underneath, don't you?
Maybe that's why, in her letter, she said it was the best thing that ever happened to her.
So I'm glad we got to review the book together.
Now one way that we remember what the sequence of the story is is of course by making an activity.
For me, I love making things to play with, and that's what we're gonna do today together.
So, we're going to be making some paper bag puppets.
The materials are paper bags, glue, scissors, and paper.
So let's go to our project place and get started.
All right.
So let's see here.
So I have made some puppets here that I'm going to show you.
So I made the prince.
Look at how handsome he looks.
You would never know that he's rotten to the core and a bum.
And then I made our princess, Elizabeth.
Now, I decided to make her in her fancy clothing, but you can decide to make her in her paper bag, any way you'd like.
I also made a dragon.
Those are the three main characters in our story.
Let me grab the dragon down here and I'll show you what he looks like.
Look, he even has fiery breath.
All right.
So to get started, you have to pick which character you'd like to make.
Today I thought I'd model for you how I made the princess, and maybe if we have time, how I made the dragon.
So I'm going to get one of these paper lunch bags like this and you'll notice that when you put your hand inside, it almost makes like a little mouth going up and down like this, doesn't it?
That's gonna be the front part of your puppet, just like that.
This is where you're gonna put the head, the eyes, and the mouth.
We're going to first make the hair.
Now, when I started with my princess, I like to reference the book and make the hair.
In our story, she had blonde hair.
What color is your hair?
My hair is brown, but sometimes when I go to my hair stylist I have her put blonde in it, too.
I think it looks pretty.
But I also like the way black hair looks.
So if you have black hair, I think you're pretty too.
Beautiful.
So here is the hair.
We're going to attach it with some glue.
Now, I'm using a glue stick.
Put it down here.
And I'm gonna keep adding some more hair.
Now, when I'm cutting the hair, I'm kind of cutting in a squiggly shape, an organic shape.
That means it's not very linear.
Cutting it like that 'cause if you notice our hair, especially Princess Elizabeth's hair, it is very, very unkempt, isn't it?
That means it's all over the place.
All right, and we're gonna put our last bit of hair down, and then I'll show you what the hair looks like.
Going around and around, just like that.
I wonder what Elizabeth's parents thought of Prince Ronald.
That is not very nice of him, is it?
To kind of reject Princess Elizabeth because she doesn't look a certain way.
Okay, so here is what our puppet is looking like so far.
Now in order to make her fancy, we're gonna add a dress.
Now if you're making the prince, you're going to add a shirt and you're going to add some pants, but I decided to make a dress.
Now I'm using some purple paper and I'm kind of taking it and thinking about, hm, where can I cut it?
By putting it underneath the mouth and just making some lines.
And then I'm gonna cut a shape that looks like this, and were gonna go around just like that.
It kind of looks like a triangle.
I'll show you in just a minute, but it's a little more round.
It looks like this.
What do you think?
Let's put it on now.
You're not gonna want to glue it right up to the mouth, a little bit lower than that.
Let's put it down right here.
Ooh.
There we go.
And that is what she is looking like so far with her fancy dress.
Next thing we're gonna need is what?
Some eyes, that's right.
She has to be able to see where she's going so she can find that pesky dragon.
Now, the dragon lived in a cave.
That was very brave of Princess Elizabeth to go into a cave not knowing what was in there.
And that dragon even looked like it wanted to eat her all up.
So scary.
Are you brave?
Maybe you're brave in a different way.
Maybe you're brave when you try new foods that your parents tell you you need to try, but they look yucky.
All right, let's add some eyes.
This is what's gonna give our puppets some life.
Ooh, let's see, here we go.
Okay, looking better.
Now, we need to add the little pupils, that's the little black part in between there.
Let's get that in there.
All right, and then we're going to kind of cut some ovals for the eyes, and you want to make them smaller than the white circles you just cut out.
There you go.
All right.
Now, sometimes when I'm doing these activities, I might even stop and look in the mirror and think, what do my eyes look like?
Oof, I have eyelashes, I have eyebrows.
We can add those too, those are always fun to add.
All right, and next we're gonna give her some nice lips.
Remember, this is the mouth part, so we're gonna cut the lips.
Now if you are doing this and you don't want to freehand it, meaning you don't want to do it without lines, then take a pencil and draw some lines on there.
That way they can come out just the way you want them.
I just kind of go for it, and if it's not perfect, that's okay, because it's mine.
All right, here are the lips, see?
They look like my lips, kind of.
Now you're going to want to cut these in half.
That means you're gonna cut them from pointy end to pointy end, just like that, because you're gonna want a top part of the lip on top here and a bottom part of the lip down here.
That way when you put your hands in, it looks like they are talking.
See?
Here we go.
We're getting close!
The next thing we need is our hands.
It gives your puppet some expression.
So let's look, she has a purple dress, so maybe we can make a purple sleeve using my scraps here.
We can make some sleeves.
Now I have big poofy sleeves today.
I won't give you such poofy sleeves, my puppet princess.
So I cut a long rectangle like this.
Now your hands can look however you want.
Your arms can look however they want.
We're gonna add hands in just a little bit.
Okay, there's one sleeve.
Let's get another one going.
Almost there.
Now parents, if you're watching, it is one thing to read a book to a child, but it's another to immerse them in a reading experience, and that's what play does.
So right now I'm giving you some tools that you can use to play with your child and really bring that book to life.
I remember when I was little, reading books and then acting out the story with all of my toys, it was so much fun.
Okay, we have our sleeves here, she's pointing out, and next we're going to make our hands.
Now I'm going to use a spare piece of paper bag here and I'm gonna cut out a square like this and then I always do kind of like mitten hands.
Have you seen a mitten where it's just like the thumb and all the fingers are put together?
(laughs) That's just what I do, but you do your hands any way you want.
You can even trace your hands and put them on there.
Here we go, there's this one and this one.
Thumbs facing in.
Thumbs facing in, Miss Lara, thumbs facing in.
There we go, and from here the last thing we're gonna do is maybe add a crown.
Let's add a big, beautiful crown on our fancy Princess Elizabeth.
So to make the crown, I actually used a special material called foil, you might have this in your house.
It's kind of shiny and it looks expensive, so what I did is I took a sheet of foil and I folded it in fourths, one two three four, just like that.
And actually it kind of just sticks on its own, and then do you remember how we made that big paper crown?
We're gonna do the same thing and cut out little spikes, I call them the dragon's teeth, and we're gonna cut them out like that.
I'm gonna make three, and that's how many times Elizabeth knocked on the door, isn't it?
All right.
And then from there I'm gonna stick it on so she looks like a big, beautiful princess.
Oof, what do you think?
Let's try her on.
Ooh, look at that, she talks, even!
I can't wait to see what puppets you make with your paper bag or using any other recycled materials.
Remember, if you make any of the projects that we do here at the station, make sure you send me a picture or a note that really makes my whole day, and I think they're gonna put the address here down below.
Now before I leave you, I did want to show you how to make the dragon really quickly.
I'll just walk you through it so that you're able to make it at home.
So for the dragon, I did basically the same thing.
I cut out a big green head and then I made him some wings and I made him a tail and then to make the fire coming out of his mouth, I used this stuff, which is crepe paper that you might see for parties.
I just used this and kind of cut it up and glued it down.
So I hope that you try that one, too.
All right, boys and girls, let me tell you what we're gonna do tomorrow so that you're ready.
Tomorrow we're gonna play a beginning sound game.
We're gonna pretend to be dragons and we're gonna put fire on all the beginning sounds that I call out, it's gonna be a lot of fun.
So remember to bring your thinking cap and get ready for some more learning.
