So I hope that you enjoyed that story.
And of course I love reading to you, but part of our work is getting you to read too.
So we focus on a few skills that'll help you get there.
So today we're gonna look at beginning sounds So let's work on our lesson on beginning sounds.
Beginning sounds, you'll remember, it's the first sound you hear in a word.
So we're gonna focus on the beginning sound of B.
It makes the ba sound.
And I have some things here that may or may not start with B.
You're gonna help me figure it out.
Are you ready?
Let's look at the first one.
Oh, lobster claws.
L, does that sound like ba at the beginning?
No, that's gonna stay right here.
It's not gonna go in our character.
How about, oo, here's one.
A bone, bone, does that sound like ba at the beginning?
Bone.
Yes, it does.
Bone starts with B. I'm gonna put it in their, munch, munch, crunch.
Ooh, a garbage truck loves to eat bones.
Let's see another one.
How about this one?
Dirty diapers.
Ooh, yuck.
Da, dirty.
No, that doesn't start with ba.
That would be birdie.
That's not right.
We'll put her back.
How about this one?
Box.
Ba, ox.
Does that sound with ba at the beginning?
Yes, box starts with B.
We're gonna put them in the trashcan, ba, ba.
Yum, yum, yum, yum, crunch.
Ooh, let's get another one.
How about this?
This is a bag.
You hear that beginning sound?
Ba, ag.
Does it say ba at the beginning?
It does.
Let's put them in our garbage truck crunch, crunch crunch.
Oh, let's see.
How about this one?
A tire.
Ta, ire.
Does that say ba at the beginning?
No, we're gonna go ahead and leave it right here.
All right, boys and girls, now remember beginning sounds are one way to help you learn how to read because they help you take apart the sounds and words.
Now, in order for you to learn how to read and practice your beginning sounds at home.
Of course I have an activity for you.
So let's look at the materials that you're going to need.
So for this activity we're gonna make a recycled materials, garbage truck.
You're gonna need one large box one small box, tape, glue, paper roll.
Like you might find in a napkin or toilet paper roll and decorations of your choice.
I chose paint, but you can decorate however you want.
Okay, let's go over to our project place so we can get started.
Now I had a lot of fun making this garbage track.
Let me show you what the final product is gonna look like.
It's gonna look like this.
See, I found the small box and it even had a little window.
This was a pasta box I believe.
And this one was just another box I had laying around and a toilet paper roll.
So let's start our construction.
The one we're gonna make today is a little bit smaller because I used the materials I had on hand.
So this is the small box that we're gonna use, it's gonna be the body of our garbage truck.
I'm gonna put it right here.
And then this is an old tea box and I'm gonna put it right here.
Now that is going to be the base of our truck.
You see here?
And we would glue or tape it together like this.
Now, before I do any of that I'm gonna want to decorate it.
So I'm gonna use some paints.
I decided that I want to paint my truck green.
Do you like the color green?
I think that green stands for the environment and recycling.
So it reminds me of a garbage truck.
So I just start painting here.
Now, remember when you're painting, you're going to want to do it in a place where you can get things a little bit messy because the paint sometimes goes everywhere.
So right here, I'm on a table that I can easily wipe off, so I'm just gonna paint all the way around.
I'm using my paintbrush right here.
And just going up and down, painting around.
Now, you might have to wait to paint the bottom, just because you're gonna have to have it sit somewhere where it's not wet.
All right.
I'm gonna paint one more side so you can see and then I'll show you how we can get the wheels together.
So here, I'm gonna paint this side.
So starting to look like a garbage truck like in my example, isn't it?
Now, one thing that you can do is you can kind of make it so that it's hollow in the middle like this.
And that's gonna allow you to play a game that we're gonna play in just a minute.
Let me get my little box here, so I can show you, we're gonna paint this side.
Again, we're not gonna paint the bottom just yet, because what would happen if you paint the bottom?
Then wherever you set it, it's gonna get paint all over it, isn't it?
Oh, we don't want that.
Like cover it up.
Just like that.
Cover up all the words.
So I can start to use my imagination and pretend that it's a truck.
Hey, I think I got most sides.
I'm just gonna do the here.
Then while that is drying I will show you how I made the wheels.
Now for the wheels, I used a napkin roll like this, again, another recycled material that would have gone straight to the trash.
And I decided, nope, I'm gonna make some wheels out of it.
So I cut four wheels.
You can cut more if your tube allows it.
So here I just cut straight across.
Here's one.
Sometimes they fly away and here's two.
And three, maybe I'll do five wheels.
And four and five.
It looks like I have enough for five, and we'll pretend that each one is two wheels.
So the next thing you're gonna want to do is paint those wheels, black or any color.
I'm gonna use a mixture of black and green.
And I'm just gonna paint all the way around them like this.
And I paint the outside and I also paint the inside because that's really what you're going to see.
So I'm gonna reach in and paint the inside too.
I'm getting a little bit messy.
So I'm making sure to wear clothing that I don't mind getting dirty.
All right.
So that's what one wheel is gonna look like right here.
See it?
And once they dry it all up then you can glue them together.
And they'll actually look like my finished product right here.
I'll show you my truck.
Vroom, vroom, vroom.
My garbage truck.
Now, once you have it all done like this when you glued the wheels and I glued a little exhaust here you can actually play a beginning sound game using things around your house.
So I gathered some materials here that we can play a game with.
So let me show you what they are.
I'm just gonna clear off my paint and you can actually put things in a basket like this.
You can use magazine cutouts with special letters or you can just go around your house and put things in the garbage truck that start with a particular letter.
Of course, I'm in TV land, so I put things in a basket 'cause I can't really move around.
Let me show you what I have.
I have a magnifying glass.
You use that to see things closely, a balloon some sprinkles, yum, some garlic, not so yum, a goat, pencil, a spoon, claw, stick, straw reusable of course because we want to be kind to our environment.
and a clip.
So looking at all my things the first part of the game is picking out a letter.
Hmm, I think I'll find things that start with the letter.
S that's what my garbage truck is gonna eat.
Okay.
Let's look at the first one.
How about spoon?
Does spoons start with the letter S?
Remember the letter S makes the ss sound like a snake.
Do you hear that beginning sound, spoon?
Yes, okay into my garbage truck.
Come on down, collect it.
And it goes with the letter S, it's still hungry.
So let's keep looking.
How about Clip?
Clip, hmm does that sound like it starts with the letter S clip?
No, it starts with a K, K, that's a different letter.
That's actually a C sorry garbage truck can't eat that.
How about stick?
Stick, does it make the sound like the ss sounds.
Okay, let's get our garbage truck.
It's gonna eat the stick.
Ooh, yummy breakfast, but it's still hungry.
Let's find some other things.
How about garlic?
Let's see the beginning sound that I hear is ga, ga, ga. Good, does that sound the same as ss, no.
Now Kenny garlic today, let's try another one.
