Welcome back to "Camp Read-A-Lot", the place where we read books, sing songs, and keep the learning going all summer long.
My name is Mrs. Lara.
Can you tell me your name?
I'm so excited.
We have so much to do today.
Should we get started with a song with Miss Maria, the mail person?

All right, Miss Maria, let me put you down and I'll go through what we're going to do today.
So today, we're going to read another book by Laura Numeroff and it's going to be a fun one.
I have so many clues that are gonna help us guess what the book is about.
Now, I added something new this week.
I have mystery words.

Let's do our song.
♪ This is the left ♪ ♪ This is the right ♪ ♪ When we read ♪ ♪ We start at the left ♪ ♪ And slide to the right ♪ So let's see what it says.
Dear Mrs. Lara, have you ever made a brownie?
I wonder if that's the chocolatey thing we're going to make.
Mmm, I love brownies.
Well, first I needed a cookie and now nothing but a brownie will do.
Now, do you remember which character in our story needed a cookie?
That's right, the mouse.
Do you think you can share a recipe with our friends?
Love, the Mouse.
I think I have a good recipe to share with you.
We're gonna have to do that in our project place, but for now, I want you to guess what book Miss Maria dropped off.
So I have some clues here.
Let me grab them.
So the first clue I have is a letter clue.
So let's see.
First, we're gonna need a big line, then another big line down, another big line down, and one more to make the letter M. M. What could that have to do with a book?
Letter M. And then, she dropped off a paper bag.
A paper bag, the letter M. What else do we have here that might help us figure out what book we're going to read?
Chocolate powder?
The letter did talk about brownies.
I wonder if this is to make brownies.
A spoon.
A spoon.
Oh, ice cream scoop.
There better be ice cream in this book.
I love ice cream.
But wait a minute.
An umbrella?
Huh?
What does that have to do with an ice cream scoop, chocolate, a spoon, a paper bag, and the letter M?
What could our book be about?
Let's see as we reveal our book.
Ready?
Here it goes.
It's gonna be backwards.
(Mrs. Lara humming) "If You Give a Mouse a Brownie".
I bet that when our mouse gets a brownie, he's gonna want to do other things, right?
That's what we've been learning about.
Okay, so let's read it.
This book was written by Laura Numeroff, just like all of our books this week.
She's the author.
That means she writes the words.
It's illustrated by Felicia Bond.
Felicia Bond is the one that drew the pictures.
Now look at the front cover of the book.
What do you think?
Do you think our mouse is going to be happy or sad to get a brownie?
I think happy.
He has a big smile and he's saying hooray.
Let's read the first page.
"If You Give a Mouse a Brownie".
So it says here, if you give a mouse a brownie, he's going to ask you for some ice cream to go with it.
That's why our clue had an ice cream scoop.
When you give him some ice cream, look, he's getting vanilla ice cream, he'll ask you for a spoon.
He'll start drumming on the table.
Hey, we did that last week, didn't we?
Drumming will get him so excited, he'll wanna start a band.
He's like a rockstar mouse.
You'll have to play guitar.
He'll want to put on a show, so you'll have to build a stage, and then you'll need spotlights and a microphone.
So look at the mouse, if you can see, on top of the lamp.
He's being so bossy.
He's saying, "You play the guitar, we need to have a band, build me a stage."
He's such a diva, that mouse.
When the stage is finished, there he is singing on the stage, he'll want to make lots of tickets.
You'll have to find paper and markers.
When the tickets are done, he'll decide to make posters as well.
So look at all of those tickets.
I wonder who he's gonna invite.
Let's go to the next page.
He'll hang them all over the neighborhood.
Look at all of those posters.
He's going to be a rockstar mouse.
When he's hanging them, it might start to rain.
Here he is in his little boxers.
They're goldfish.
He'll fold some posters and make a little boat.
Because don't you do that in the rain, make boats?
Then he'll sail it in a puddle.
He'll get so wet that he'll start to sneeze.
Achoo!
When he peeks out of your pocket, he'll smell something delicious.
Can you smell something delicious with me?
(Mrs. Lara sniffing) I wonder if it's brownies.
The smell will remind him that he is so hungry.
You'll have to take him to the store and get a few things for him to nibble on.
Of course, he'll want to have a picnic.
When the sun comes out, you'll have to take him to the park.
While you're setting up the picnic, he'll see a playground and he'll jump on the swings.
So I don't know if you can tell, but in the picnic, there's all kinds of healthy, delicious foods, not just sugary brownies.
He has fruit and vegetables and juice all on little kebabs on crackers.
He'll go as high as he can and when he looks up at the sky, he might notice a big, white cloud.
Can you look up at the sky?
Are there any clouds where you are?
The cloud will remind him of ice cream.
He'll probably ask you for some.
And chances are, if you give him ice cream, what is he gonna do?
He's going to ask you for a brownie to go with it.
Of course.
The end.
I hope that you enjoyed this book.
Don't forget to check out other books by Laura Numeroff at your local library or on the Sora app.
Now, I love reading books to you, but we always practice our skills so that you can read to me one day.
So today, we're gonna work on rhyming words, words that sound the same at the end.
Now I had a teacher, Mrs. Johnson, who taught me this little chant that reminded me of rhyming words.
It went like this.
Get your clappers out.
♪ Rhyming words ♪ ♪ Sound the same ♪ ♪ Rhyming words ♪ ♪ Sound the same ♪ ♪ Rhyming words ♪ ♪ Sound the same ♪ And every time I did that, I remembered, rhyming words do sound the same.
Now today, we're going to try to find the things that rhyme with spoon.
Spoon.
So let's look at our first picture here.
We have spoon.
Does brownie rhyme with spoon?
Brownie, spoon.
No, they don't sound the same.
Boo to that.
No, sorry.
You don't get to go up with spoon.
How about this picture?
Do you know what this is?
This is a moon.
Moon.
Now let's say them together.
Spoon, moon.
Do they rhyme?
Yes, they do!
Let's say our chant.
Let's see.
Spoon, moon, they both say oon.
Let's see.
How 'bout ice cream?
I wanna eat the ice cream, but does it rhyme with spoon?
Ice cream, spoon.
No, they don't say the same.
Boo to that.
You stay down.
How about this?
A cocoon.
Cocoon, spoon.
Do they sound the same?
They do, they sound the same at the end, right?
I'm gonna put you up with spoon.
Let's hear our chant.
Cocoon, spoon, they both say oon.
How about fork, spoon?
Fork, spoon.
Fork and spoon, do they sound the same?
No.
They're both utensils, you eat with both of them, but they don't sound the same.
Actually, you could stay right there fork.
You don't get to go up with spoon.
Let's do a couple more.
How about drum?
Drum.
Does drum sound like spoon at the end?
No.
Not a lot of words today.
They do not sound the same.
How about mouse?
Mouse and spoon.
Do they sound the same?
Mouse, spoon.
No, they don't sound the same either.
Let's do one more before we review.
How about this word?
I think you know what this is.
It's a balloon.
It flies high in the air.
Balloon, spoon.
Do they sound the same?
They do, don't they?
Balloon, spoon, they both say oon.
So let's review our rhyming words with spoon.
We have moon, cocoon, and balloon.
They all rhyme with spoon.
Can you find anymore words that rhyme with spoon where you are?
Right now, I'm gonna leave you with a project that you can do at home with your family that goes along with the book and we'll bring it to life.
What do you think we're gonna bake today?
Brownies!
That's right.
So let's go over to the project place where we're gonna make some brownies.
Now, you're going to follow your own brownie recipe.
Maybe your family has a secret brownie recipe that they've passed on from generations to generations.
This is the one I use.
(Mrs. Lara giggling) It makes it kind of simple for us doing it together today.
It is just a mix, but at the back of the mix, it does have the recipe.
Now I've been saying all week, families cooking, especially related to a text kind of brings the book to life and allows children to read and with the pictures that are up here, what ingredients to add, following step-by-step directions, which will allow them to then write stories and possibly books doing first, next, and last, all skills they'll need as they move up in grade levels.
So, we're going to pour our mix in here.
Now if you make them from scratch, you're going to need flour, baking powder, cocoa powder, extra cocoa powder.
You've gotta make them chocolatey.
But this mix has everything that we need.
Once you add the mix, I'm gonna check to see what ingredients I need.
Now remember, the ingredients are the things that I'm going to add to the recipe to make it turn into batter and brownies.
So it says I need three tablespoons of water.
So I have my water right here and I have my tablespoon measure.
Will you help me measure out three?
Here we go.
Say them with me.
One.
Two.
And three.
It's like I'm making it rain on a chocolate mountain.
All right, there's the tablespoon.
What is my next ingredient, recipe?
A half a cup of vegetable oil.
I have my vegetable oil right here and here is my half cup measure.
Now, I heard from a friend that you really should use a different thing to measure liquids when you're baking.
I wonder if you have that tradition in your family.
(Mrs. Lara giggling) A little dish.
All right, here's the oil.
Oh no, it looks like mud.
Delicious, chocolatey mud.
Before we mix, I believe we have a couple more ingredients.
Two eggs.
It even has it in Spanish.
(woman speaking in foreign language) Let's get our eggs right here.
And we need two.
So here is one.
Now I use the side of my bowl to crack my egg, but sometimes I get shells in there.
I have to fish them out.
If you have a better way, you let me know.
Here goes one.
One.
Plop.
In it goes and then one more.
In it goes.
Okay, is it time to mix?
Let's check the recipe.
Yes.
Stir everything together.
And I have my whisk here.
We're gonna stir everything together.
Let's first stir it.
As I'm stirring, I'm thinking of words like incorporate, blend, all important vocabulary words that your children and that we need to know for school.
Can you imagine if your child, as they're coloring a picture, they tell their teacher, "Well, I'm incorporating the colors blue and green and then I might blend them together."
Your teacher's gonna think, this child is so fancy.
They know a lot of words.
Here we go, mixing it up.
Now, for the brownie mix, I will tell you that I always, always, always hand mix.
I don't use a stand mixer or those motorized ones that you might have at home.
It just makes for a very cakey brownie.
It's so thick, my whisk came off.
(Mrs. Lara laughing) Keep it together, whisk!
Keep it together!
So I think our mix is there.
Look at that gooey mix.
Delicious.
Next, we're going to add it to our pan.
Now I'm using a nine by 13 large pan because I like my brownies to be extra fudgey.
Now if you use a smaller pan, they're gonna be a little taller and a little cakier, so it depends on your preference.
Here we go.
Putting it in.
Pouring it in the pan.
This is chocolate.
I'm doing everything I can, boys and girls, to just not lick the bowl.
(Mrs. Lara laughing) Can't do that right now.
Then we're going to put this down here and spread it out.
I actually have a spoon for that since my whisk is taking a vacation here.
Let's put the spoon together and we're going to spread it on in.
We have just enough time for me to show you what the baked brownie will look like and maybe we'll add a little flare to it.
There's the brownies, ready to go into the oven.
Look at that.
Delicious.
Now, I only have a play oven here, so I'm gonna put it down and we're gonna see what the recipe says.
You're to bake it for, this one takes awhile, 40 minutes.
Can you imagine sitting here waiting for brownies to be baked?
No, no, no, much too long.
Luckily through the magic of TV, (Mrs. Lara humming) we have a brownie already made right here.
Delicious.
Now I know what you're thinking.
Mrs. Lara, this brownie looks a little plain, and it does.
Plain brownie.
It needs to be jazzed up and made into a kid brownie, so let's do that.
We're gonna add some frosting.
So let's add some frosting on top.
Have you ever added frosting to your brownies?
Give it a try.
It's delicious.
Putting it way up here.
Give it a try.
There's more frosting than brownie.
I drowned my brownie in frosting!
And then, I'm going to put that aside, and then of course, it wouldn't be a recipe about a book without lots of sprinkles.
Are you ready?
Let's do sprinkle dance.
Sprinkle dance, put them in there, sprinkle dance.
Here is our finished brownie that I hope that you make at home with your family.
Now, if you would like to read another book about baking, why don't you check out a cookbook in the library?
They have lots of cookbooks for kids that'll allow you to bake not just brownies, but other healthier snacks like a fruit salad, or, let's see, sandwiches with lots of delicious lettuce and vegetables.
I hope that you check that out.
Looks like we have just enough time to sing our goodbye song and then I'll tell you what we're going to do tomorrow for our art project.
