She has a worry monster all the time.
I don't think she uses the worry monster very much though.
I'm excited to share this story with you boys and girls, let's watch together.
(bells chiming) It's story time.
(bell ringing) "Henny Penny" by Bonnie Dopkin, retold by Mrs. Lara.
"Henny Penny lived with her friends in a wonderful kingdom of forest, meadows and ponds.
It was as perfect a place as you could imagine, unless you were Henny Penny.
One morning Henny Penny was talking with her friend Ducky Lucky.
"What a perfect day."
said Ducky Lucky.
"Yes."
said Henny Penny.
I just hope it doesn't get too hot or too windy.
Or what if it rains?
Ducky Lucky shook his head, "You worry too much.
"Why don't you go look for something to eat?"
"All right."
said Henny Penny.
I suppose it couldn't hurt to get nice crunchy bugs.
So Henny Penny wandered down the road, picking, flicking, peaking and checking.
Finally, she found some bugs and grubs under an old oak tree.
"Well, these look tasty."
said Henny Penny.
I only hope I don't get sick from eating too many.
Just then the wind huffed through the branches of the oak tree and loosened an acorn, the acorn fell straight down and clunk it had Henny Penny on the head.
"Ouch."
cried Henny Penny.
"What was that?"
She looked around but didn't see anything.
"My goodness, the sky must be falling.
"I must go and tell the king."
Soon Henny Penny ran into her friend, Ducky Lucky.
"What's wrong?"
asked Ducky Lucky.
Henny Penny said, "The sky is falling, the sky is falling.
"I must go tell the king."
Lucky Ducky decided to go with her, and soon they came upon Turkey Lurky.
"The sky is falling."
cried Henny Penny and Ducky Lucky.
"We must go and tell the king."
Turkey Lurky thought, well if Ducky Lucky believes Henny Penny then it must be true.
I better join them.
And off they went, soon they saw Goosey Loosey.
(goose quacking) "What's wrong?"
said Goosey Loosey.
"The sky is falling," cried Henny Penny, Ducky Lucky and Turkey Lurky, "We must go tell the king."
"Well said," Goosey Loosey, "If Ducky Lucky believes you and Turkey Lurky has joined you then it must be true."
So Goosey Loosey joined them and soon they came upon Cocky Lucky.
(cock crowing) "What's wrong?"
He asked.
"The sky is falling."
cried Henny Penny, Ducky Lucky, Turkey Lurky and Goosey Loosey.
We must go tell the king.
Now the five friends hurried into the forest.
They had only gone a little way when they saw Foxy Loxy.
- [Foxy] Hello.
- [Lara] "Oh my," he said, "You look distressed, what's wrong?"
"The sky's falling."
cried Henny Penny, Ducky Lucky, Turkey Lurky, Goosey Loosey and Cocky Locky.
We must go tell the king.
"I know the king well," said Foxy Loxy, "I also know a shortcut to the palace, follow me there isn't a moment to lose."
(gentle music) Foxy Loxy led them straight to his den.
"The shortcut is right inside here."
said Foxy Loxy.
And in the five friends went.
Now, two things didn't happen after that.
The sky didn't fall and no one met the king, but Foxy Loxy still talks about the wonderful feast he had that day."
- [Man] Hmm, yummy.
- [Lara] The end.
(dramatic music) Oh no, what happened to all characters?
I think they were gobbled up all because Henny Penny thought that the sky was falling, because an acorn hit her on the head.
Talk about worrying.
Now boys and girls I hope that you loved that book.
Remember that you can check out more books like "Henny Penny" at your local library and on the Sora app.
Now I love reading books to you, but I can't wait until you start to read books to me.
So that's why we're gonna work on our reading comprehension, which is retelling the story.
So I have some pictures that are gonna help us retell the story of Henny Penny right now.
Now quick tip for my teacher friends that are watching, I usually make these charts and put them by the writing center or by the library.
That way children can orally retell the story as well as they're working during their independent exploration time.
Okay, now let's start.
The title of the book was "Henny Penny", and there were lots of characters and things that happened in the story.
First, there was one character that at all.
Do you remember her name?
That's right, Henny Penny.
Now she was a worrier, even though she lived in the most magical, beautiful forest.
All she could do was worry, worry, worry.
And one day she was under an oak tree, and she was munching on bugs when what should fall on her head, but an acorn.
And she thought, it's the sky and it's falling.
And she had to run and tell the king, that's right.
And on her way to tell the king, she met some friends.
She met Ducky Lucky, right?
Now Ducky Lucky was like a little bit skeptical, he wasn't sure he said, "Hmm, I don't know if I should follow Henny Penny, she's a worrier."
But she decided to go along.
So both of them went over, they were gonna tell the king that what?
The sky was falling.
Even though it really wasn't falling.
Then they met their friend Turkey Lurky, and Turkey Lurky wasn't sure either.
He knew that Henny Penny was a nervous wreck and a worrier, but he still decided to follow along anyway.
So then all three of them, one, two, three, decided to go and tell the king.
Then they met their friend Goosey Loosey.
Now did Goosey Loosey believed their story?
Yes he did.
He said, "All right, if Turkey Lurky and Ducky Lucky believe Henny Penny then I do too.
We're off to see the king."
And off they went until they met one more friend, do you remember?
It was our friend Cocky Locky.
He met our friend there and they decided to all five of them go see the king one, two, three, four, five.
But on their way there, who should they meet but Foxy Loxy?
Now if you know anything about stories, you know that a Fox in a story is bad news.
They always want to eat the characters.
And didn't Foxy Loxy say, "Come I know a shortcuts."
(laughing) And there go the five chasing him down until Foxy Loxy lured them into a den and, cover your ears if you don't want to hear this part, and chump munch them all up for dinner.
And then they went over, did the sky actually fall?
No, sky didn't fall and Foxy Loxy had a very good dinner, huh?
So I hope that you retell that story with some pictures with your family.
Right now we're gonna make a little hat to go with the story to bring it to life.
So let's go over to the project place.
Let's see.
All right.
So here we are in the project place, and we're gonna be making a hat to go with our story.
Can you guess what kind of had it is?
Let's look, it's a hen hat, that's right.
It's a Henny Penny hat.
Now you can wear this hat while you're reading the book with me tomorrow live, or you can wear it around the house and pretend that you're Henny Penny and worry about everything until you give your worries to about worry monsters.
So in order to do this activity with me you'll need some white paper, you'll need some red paper, orange paper, a black marker, and some glue.
So I'll take you through the steps.
So the first thing you're gonna wanna do is take your white paper and cut it down into strips.
Now, I use this very large paper like this because it just makes it easier for me not to have to cut so many pieces when I put them around my head.
But you can use any type of paper that you have at home.
Next I'm gonna glue my pieces together to make a very long strip of a white paper.
This is gonna be the base for my hat.
I have a glue stick, so I'm gonna use that because it dries very quickly and I want to get to finish it here with you guys.
But you can use a stapler, you can use any kind of glue that you have.
And I'm putting it together.
And then I'm gonna rub it together like this and hold it down just like that.
The next step is kind of fun and you might need some help.
You need to take a white band of paper and you need to wrap it around your head like so, and measure how big your head is.
Now my head's pretty big, I'm a grownup.
I like to say that it's because I have a big brain, but I don't know if that's true.
(laughing).
Yours might not be so long and you might not be multiple strips of paper, but then once you get your measurements you're going to want to glue that down until you have a circle, and I'll show you in just a minute what I mean.
All right here's one.
And then we're gonna do another one.
Put the cap on the glue stick please, we don't want it to dry out.
Fancy word, dehydrate.
And then you have your circle, you have your band.
This is the start of your hat.
The next thing we're gonna wanna do is make the legs of our hat here.
These are gonna hang down and I'll try it on for you so you can see it looks really funny and silly.
Okay, so to make your legs you're going to need two long strips of orange paper like this.
Now they do kind of have to be longer because that makes your hat extra funny.
Then I'm gonna show you a technique for folding your paper, it's called accordion style, like the musical instrument an accordion.
So you're gonna stack your two pieces on top of each other, and then you're gonna go back and forth, back and forth.
You're gonna fold and then go the other way, fold go the other way go the other way, fold go the other way.
This kind of coordination is really hard when you're three, four, or five years old.
So take your time, I've been doing it a lot of years so I can go quickly.
But you can pause the video here and get yours going.
Oh, you're gonna scratch it up back and forth, back and forth until you end up with something like this.
Ooh it's kind of bouncy.
Okay now, those are great legs but we actually wanna put our little feet at the bottom now.
If you know anything about a hen they have webbed feet.
That means the toes are parts connect.
I'm gonna cut two rectangles here, two pieces of paper.
And then I'm going to make like a little slope here.
Now you don't have to make your feet just like mine.
You can do it however you like.
Get creative, maybe yours is a ninja chicken, ninja hen.
Here's what mine looked like.
Kind of like an A with three little, like a fork huh.
And then of course, we're gonna do the bottom right here to put them on our feet.
We're nearly there.
See?
(laughing) Would it be funny if you stick these feet on anything, they're just silly feet, go with a silly book.
Okay then we're gonna glue them on to the sides here.
You're going to want to put some more glue on your paper and put them down like this.
There's one side and let's do another one.
Oh, they wanna hold hands.
(laughing) And here's the other one.
Put it right down here.
Now in my classroom I always used to start books with some sort of how do activity that students could take home.
They get so excited to share with their families, the book that they read and they retell the story out loud.
And that really is what's important, when you're just starting off school is loving it.
Okay next I'm gonna make a little top part of my hat here.
I'm gonna take a little piece of red paper and cut around almost like a fork again, and I'm gonna round the corners that go around.
Don't make a point go back around.
Around and around.
Now if anyone can write to me and tell me what this thing is called, I will send you a little note back.
I would love for you to research it and let me know.
Okay, we're getting there.
Next what do we need?
The eyes and a beak.
So let's get our beak going.
So for the beak you're gonna need a piece of orange paper just like this, and you're gonna fold it in half because our beak is going to be three dimensional.
So we're gonna cut out a triangle like this, of course using my helper hand, saving all my scraps because you never know what I can make out of them.
And then we have a beak.
Beak, beak.
And then we're gonna put some glue down the middle on the back side to glue it on.
It looks like a raw messy.
All right, now let's glue that on to the side here.
There's the beak and we're gonna smash it down.
Notice the kind of sandwich it between my two hands and then kind of get it like that.
There we go, it's coming together (laughing).
Next we need some eyes and maybe some wings if we have time.
It looks like we might run out, but I'll try my best.
So if you're following along and I'm going to fast remember, you can always stop the video and check us out on YouTube as well.
That way you can see them on demand these episodes.
Okay, two eyes oval shape.
Next I'm gonna use a black marker and I'm gonna make like a little black dot in the middle, like in a pupil.
Do you have pupils?
Go look in the mirror you'll notice you have something in your eye that's black, huh?
That's where we see out of.
I would if I could, do eyelashes and earrings on my hand because that's how I am super fancy.
Okay let's glue the eyes, we'll glue the wings.
Looks like we'll have time.
And then we'll try her on, okay?
There's one eye.
And here's another eye.
Two eyes a little bit far apart so it looks a little silly.
(laughing) But I like it, I like being silly.
I don't like things to be too perfect.
Looks like we have time to make the wings.
So I put wings on the side here just so it looks a little more realistic.
So to make the wings I kind of curve like this, and then go up and then go down like this.
And then I just do like little parts like this to make it look like feathers.
I just cut out little triangles.
Okay, one wing and two, let's put them on and then we'll try on our hat.
Here goes one, and here those two.
I can't wait to see what you look like in your hen hat.
As you read "Henny Penny" with me tomorrow live.
All right, this is what we're looking like so far.
We got our hen hat, let me try it on so you can see what it looks like.
And then we'll sing our goodbye song.
All right let's see, come on hen hat.
What do we think?
Does it looked good, silly?
(laughing) Look at the little like tap dancing.
I hope you try this activity at home.
