Can you say, hi, Ms. Southern?
I'm so glad to be here with you.
Let's go sit down and join us at the seat.
Before we get started, it's always important to put on our thinking caps.
Lock them in and type in, ready to learn.
All right, now that we're ready, I need your help.
I lost something, can you help me find it?
Okay, I'm gonna tell you what it looks like.
It's white and it has red question marks all over it.
Can you help me look around for it?
When you see it just say it's there, or there, or no.
Hmm, let's see, is it here?
Nah, hmm, is it here?
Mm, really been looking for this everywhere, maybe it's behind the chart, let's check it out.
Hmm, is it there?
No, what was that?
Behind?
Where?
Oh, let me see.
(gasps) There it is you're so smart, kiss your brain.
Let's see, this bag inside has our letter of the day.
Now, I don't know if you know your letter sounds, but I think because you're really smart you know it.
So inside the bag I have something that tells us all about the letter sound, are you ready?
Hmm, I have this.
Do you know what this is?
It's an animal that walks in the desert.
Someone said a camel, if you said a camel you're right.
It looks kind of like a little horse, but it has a little hump, that way we'll know it's a camel.
So this starts with a C, C, camel.
All right, let's see what else we have in here.
Oh my goodness, look at this.
What is that?
Yes, you're right if you said a cat, it says "meow, meow".
Can you be like cat?
Meow, meow.
Raise your hand if you have a cat at home.
Yeah, I don't have a cat but I know a few friends that have a cat.
Hi, Kitty.
Look at the cat, it says C, C, C. All right, next we have a C, C, car.
(Ms. Southern imitating car roaring sound) How many you guys have a car?
Yeah, I'm sure you're not old enough to drive, but I'm sure your parents drive.
Yep, a car.
(Ms. Southern gasps) Oh, this is one of my favorites, it's a C, C, cookie.
Mm, what's your favorite cookie?
Yeah, a cookie, cookie is so good especially if you dip it in milk, I love cookies.
Oh, another one of my favorites.
Everyone, oh, it's being tricky in there.
What is that?
It's so little, it's a little piece of corn, I love corn.
You know what?
You can make, you can eat with corn.
You could put like some tahin on it or something, so good corn, C, C, corn, can you say, C, C, Corn?
Oh, this right here is amazing, it's a C, C, Camera.
Say cheese, camera, say C, C, camera.
One more and then it will tell us about our letter of the day.
It's shiny and you can buy stuff with it's a C, C, coin.
Say coin, that's right.
So now thinking about all of the things we went through what letter do you think is the letter of the day?
Yep, I heard someone say it.
If you said the letter C, you are correct.
Kiss your brain.
The letter C. Let's look at the letter C. I'm gonna put it right here on my whiteboard.
I want you to draw the letter C in the air with me, are you ready?
Start our letters at the top, that's right, you are so smart.
♪ We always start our letters at the top, top, top ♪ ♪ We always start our letters at the top ♪ ♪ At the top, top top, not the bottom, bottom, bottom ♪ ♪ We always start our letters at the top ♪ All right, so start at the top and then we're gonna make a round curve like this.
Can you do that with me?
Ready?
Get your magic markers out, here we go, round and stop right there at the bottom.
You know what I like about the letter C, my mom calls me by my first name and it starts with the letter C and that's what makes it super fun C, but my teacher name is Ms. Southern, so you can call me Ms. Southern and we'll talk about my special letter S another time.
But this is the letter C, C sometimes can be a little trickster cause it says C, but the sound is K, K, K. So we're gonna draw it one more time, you get ready.
Let me see you draw it in the air.
Wow, you're really good at that.
So this is our letter of the day.
You know, the letter C kind of reminds me of a word and I love this word because it describes some of the best things in the world and that's the word, color.
Can you say color?
That's right.
You know, I have a book that has a lot of colors in it.
Would you like to read it with me?
All right, get ready.
I have it right here.
This book is called, "Mouse Paint".
Can you say, "Mouse Paint" This is by Ellen Walsh.
And you know what?
When I'm reading this book, if you hear the word, color or you see the letter C give me a thumbs up.
All right, so here we go.
Once there were three mice on a white piece of paper.
The cat couldn't find them.
Why do you think the cat could not find the mice?
If you said, because they were white like the paper you are correct.
One day while the cat was asleep the mice saw three jars of paint, one red, one yellow and one blue.
Oh, oh, what do you think those mice are gonna do?
They wanna be little tricksters, huh?
They thought it will was mouse paint, they climbed right in.
Then one was red, one was yellow and one was blue.
Oh my goodness, have you ever got paint on your hands before?
Yeah, they dripped puddles of paint onto the paper.
The puddles looked so fun.
The red mice stepped into the yellow puddle and did a little dance.
Look, here he is doing his little dance, he's shaking his feet and shaking his hands.
But look, there's something changing.
His feet stirred the yellow puddle until, what color do you think the paint turned?
Look, he cried red feet and yellow puddles make orange.
So he made an orange puddle.
The yellow mouse hopped into a blue puddle, his feet mixed and stirred and stirred and mixed until, what color do you think he's gonna make?
He looked down, look down, he said.
The red mice and the blue mice, yellow feet into a blue puddle makes what color?
Huh, if you said green, you are correct.
Then the blue mouse jumped into a red puddle.
Oh my goodness, these mice are jumping into every puddle they see.
He splashed and mixed and dance until, purple, they all shouted.
Blue feet into a red puddle makes what color?
Purple, wow.
But the paint on their fur got sticky and stiff.
Have you ever gotten paint on your hands and it dried?
Yeah, it doesn't feel too good.
So they washed themselves down to a nice soft white look.
What they washed themselves.
What do you think this is?
Yeah, those silly mice got into the cat bowl where the water was and washed themselves up.
They probably washed for 20 seconds.
♪ Wash, wash, wash yourself, wash yourself till clean ♪ Wow, and painted the paper instead.
They painted one part red, one part yellow and one part blue.
Then they mixed red and yellow to paint an orange part.
So they did some mixing and we're gonna do a little bit of that later, I can't wait.
Yellow and blue to paint green part.
So then they did the yellow and the blue to paint and make green.
And blue and red to make what color do you think?
Purple, you are so brilliant.
And they left some white for the cat.
You know, that was such a good book.
I'm so excited that you guys got to read that with me.
And today we're gonna head over to our art table and do a little mixing and little bit of paint.
Would you like to do that with me?
So you may not have paint at home, but that's okay.
After we do a little bit of math then we'll do a little bit of paint.
So come on, stand up with me, we're gonna do some stretching, a little wiggle mixed wiggle before we head over to our math.
Okay, so everybody stand up on your feet.
We're gonna do a little bit of stretching and counting.
So the first thing we're gonna do is we're gonna be mixing some paint in the air, so we're going to mix.
Let's pretend we have blue in this hand and let's pretend we have green in this hand.
Okay, ready?
Put it together and mix, let's count to 10.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.
Whoa, good job.
Now we're gonna work on a little bit of legs, those mice were a little bit silly.
Remember they jumped into every puddle.
We're gonna do five jumps, are you ready?

We're gonna jump five times into a puddle of paint.

Now that we are all up and moving let's go have a seat and do a little bit of math, come on, join me.
So here we have at our table some color map opps, there goes our special word, color, so give a thumbs up.
So I have some linker cubes here and some maths and some colors here in blocks.
So we're gonna do a little bit of counting.
So whenever I pull out, we're gonna count.
So what's the first color we're going to look for?
It's right here.
Oh, I heard, someone say blue, you are right.
We're gonna look for all of our blue squares.
So let's count it and we're gonna connect them.
I love these little things cause you can just connect there right at the top, you see that?
Ready?
Count one, two, three.
Oh, oh, that one was upside down.
Oh these ones are already connected.
Four, five, six.
Okay, I'm gonna stop right there and we're gonna count, count with me and one, two, three, four, five, six.
I'm wanna lay these right here and I want you to say stop, you have six cubes.
Ready, let's count when you hear the number six, you're gonna say stop, you have six cubes, ready?
One, two, three, four, five, six, stop.
You have six cubes.
I'm gonna draw the number six.
So this is how I do six, we start at the top as well.
I'm gonna go down and scoop around.
This is how we draw the number six.
So I'm gonna put six right here on the blue, I have six cubes.
All right, what's the next color?
Yep, green, you are right, ready?
Count with me, one, two, three, four.
Okay, let's count, we always gotta check our work.

Here we go one, two, three.
Stop, you have three yellow cubes.
Where have you seen the color yellow before?
I see the color yellow when I'm driving, at the stop sign or the sun is yellow or lemons are yellow.
So let's draw three, three goes like this, around the tree, around the tree.
That is how you make a three, around the tree, around a tree, this is how you make a three.
All right, so I'm gonna write a three right here.
You know what?
We have time to do one more.
There's two other colors, but you know what?
When you're at home, you can make a little chart like this as well, just like this.
So what's the next color we're gonna do?
That's right, this is orange.
All right, ready?
Count with me orange.

So I'm gonna just pick this up, make sure that I'm holding my marker the right way.
And I'm gonna go down, down, four.

All right, I wanna jump right into our painting cause I've been waiting and waiting and waiting to do some painting and some color and so here I have a little tray that I use with some of my students and let's see, what color should I use?
What do you think?
You know what, when I was your age I loved purple too.
So I'm just gonna put a little bit of purple paint in there.
Let's see if you guys can see that.
Look at that purple paint, oh my goodness.
I wanna make a rainbow, so I'm gonna just dip it in there, here and I'm gonna create a rainbow.
So I'm gonna go like this and you know what?
A rainbow looks like the letter C. All right, what color should I use next?
Oh, someone said I should use blue.
If you said blue, that's a good choice.
So I'm just gonna pour a little bit out and I'm not even gonna use water for this because I'm just experimenting, I'm mixing colors.
So here we go right next to it, I'm gonna draw.
Let's turn it this way so you can see it.
I'm practicing my letter C. Here we go, how did I do?
Yep, all right, what's next?
Orange, you're right, I'm gonna use orange.
You know what?
I love oranges.
Oranges are so good, I'm just putting a little dab and I'm practicing my letter C. Okay, draw with me if you have your paint that's great, but if you don't, it's okay.
And you see how it mix a little bit, that's okay.
When we're doing art, we're getting creative, if it mixes a little bit, no big deal.
Ooh, you know what I'm gonna use?
I think this would go great.
What color is the sun?
Yellow, all right, let's do a little bit of yellow.
I'm just gonna put a little dub of paint right there and I'm gonna make another C, another C. And it looks like I have room for one more.
What color should I use?
Hmm, oh, thank you, I have this light blue.
If you said light blue that was a perfect, perfect mix.
So I'm gonna just put a little bit of light blue there and I'm gonna just go right underneath, real soft.
Now, you know what?
Here's the thing, we're missing something on our letter C cause look, we're taking our C and we're turning it turning it, turning it, turning it stop.
What do you think we need behind it or in front?
I'm sorry, right here in the front.
Someone said clouds, what color are the clouds we're using today?
White, yes.
So I'm gonna just mix a little bit there and I have another paintbrush and I'm gonna just do a little bit of clouds right here at the bottom.
Look at that, what do you guys think?
You like it?
Let's see here, pom, pom, pom.
All right, so we did some colors.
Let's count, how many colors did we use?
All right, let's count one, two, three, four, five.
So we used five colors.
Show me five fingers, one, two, three, four, five.
And how many white clouds do we have?
One, two, show me two.
We have two white clouds.
Well friends, you guys are really good at counting.
You guys are so smart, I am so happy I got to work with you on this.
So when we're all done with our little activity it's always good to clean up just as you go because we don't wanna have a big mess to clean up especially if we wanna move on to another activity.
We still have a little bit of time so I wanna show you something super cool.
If you are missing colors you can do just like those mice did in the book and you can mix some colors, right?
So here I have my color palette and you can mix.
So let's try mixing the blue and the yellow.
Remember how the mice mixed blue and yellow, I'm gonna just move it right here it's okay.
We don't even need to get a new piece of paper or new plate.
So we're gonna just mix.
What color do you think it's gonna be?
Look at that, what color did we make?
Green and if we wanna make it a light green because I know that spring time's coming up and we might need that we can just add a little dab of white and it will change it to a lighter green.
Is it that cool, our colors today?
All right, let's mix.
Let's see if we wanted to mix a little bit of orange and a little bit of yellow.
Let's see what you think it's gonna turn out to be.
Oh, you know what?
There was some green in there and it made it like a little wonky color, but that's okay.
You might wanna make some dirt right under your rainbow there so you could just do that there.
And remember I can add white to make it a lighter tan.
You could even draw a person if you were gonna try to draw you and your family, you could make it a light, a light tan, like a skin tone.
You know what?
Working with colors is so much fun.
All right, we have time for one more.
I'm gonna switch paint brushes cause that one's getting a little dirty.
Here is purple and you know what?
I really wanna make a light purple.
What colors do I need to mix to make that light purple?
Yep, purple and white, you're so right.
And look, it's turning into a violet.
Well friends, that's all the time we have today.
Thank you so much for helping me find my special letter bag and helping me count and doing some amazing colors.
