Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(cheerful music) - Well, hello there friends.
It's me, Ms Southern.
Can you say, "Hi, Ms Southern?"
I'm so glad to be back with you guys again.
Before we get started, you already know what to do.
Put on your thinking caps, lock 'em in, and type in ready to learn.
Wow, you guys sound so good and it sounds like you're up and ready to go.
Oh, my goodness.
Once again, I cannot find my letter bag.
Can you help me find it?
Let's describe it first.
Listen for the clues.
The first clue is it's in a white bag with a handle.
Can you say, "White bag with a handle?"
Hmm, I don't see it anywhere.
The second clue is it has red question marks all over it.
Say, "Red question marks."
Red question marks.
And the last clue is it's about medium size.
Can you say, "Medium size?"
So those were the three clues, it's in a white bag with handles.
It has red question marks on it, and the last clue is it's medium size.
I cannot seem to find it.
Hmm, last time it was on the board.
No.
Um, maybe it's in my shoe.
No, it probably wouldn't fit in a shoe.
What's that?
It's where?
Let's see.
Oh, you're right.
You're so smart.
That's right.
My letter bag was right where you said it was, but oh, no.
There's nothing inside to give us clues about the letter.
I know what we can do.
I can draw something on the board and you can tell me what it is.
I have my pen.
All right, are you guys ready?
This is what we're gonna do.
I'm gonna set this right here.
Don't worry, I won't lose it.
So, hm, I know.
This has... Let's see, you eat this with your cereal, so I'm gonna just draw it.
And as soon as you figure out what you think it is, you yell out the answer.
It comes in a white container, and this comes from an animal called a cow.
What do you think it is?
If you said, "Milk," you are correct.
Mmm milk.
Let's sound that out.
What do you think it is.
Mmm milk.
Can you say milk?
Okay, that's clue number one.
Let's draw something else.
Let's see.
This is an animal, and it swings in the tree, and sometimes you can find it at the zoo.
All right, I'm gonna draw it, and right when you get it, go head and yell it out, and it makes this sound.
Ooh, ooh, ah, ah.
What do you think it is?
Somebody said monkey.
If you said monkey, you are correct.
Oh, my goodness, you're so smart.
All right, there's something else.
We're not gonna draw a scary one, but this is called a monster.
Oh, let's make it a nice monster.
We don't wanna make scary monsters.
No, thank you.
We're gonna make it a nice muh, muh, monster.
Can you say monster?
Muh, muh, monster.
So far we have muh, muh, monster, muh, muh, monkey, muh, muh, milk, and there's something else.
Can we say muh, muh, mom?
Muh, muh, mom.
I like moms.
They're nice.
Muh, muh, mom.
So we have muh, muh, moms, muh, muh, milk, muh, muh, monkey, muh, muh, monster.
What letter do you think all these things start with?
If you said mm, mm, the letter M you are correct.
The letter M, and we're gonna start it right here.
We always start our letters at the bottom?
No, we always start our letters at the side?
No, at the top, top, top, not the bottom, bottom, bottom.
We always start our letters at the top.
So, I'm gonna put 'em right here just because I don't have a lot of room up here, but there's enough room for everything.
So, I need one big line.
Jump back up to the top.
A little line in the middle, a little line going back up, and then one going down.
Let's write this.
Get your magic markers out.
Start at the top.
Go down, jump back up.
Bump in, up, and down.
This is the letter M. Say, "M." Raise your hand if your special letter is the letter M. Mm-hm, your name could be Madison or Michael.
Yeah, right here.
So, this is the letter M. What we're gonna do today is super duper fun.
We're gonna work on drawing ourselves and the different parts of our body.
And I have a special book just for you.
And this book is called "Mat Man".
Say, "Mat Man."
Okay, so let's go ahead and read it.
This is "Mat Man: Opposites" by Jan Z Olsen and illustrated by Molly.
Ready, here we go.
Now, opposite means it's different from what we say, right?
Mat Man stands.
Can you stand up?
Mat Man, let's say the opposite.
Mat Man sits.
So the opposite of stand is sit.
I'm sitting in a chair.
So that means the opposite of sit is what?
Stand, good job.
He says, "Smile."
You say "Frown."
Can you show me a smiley face?
Now show me a frowny face.
Mat Man says, "Up."
Look, the cat is up in the tree.
Can you say that?
"The cat is up in the tree."
And this is the word up.
You say, "Down."
So up, and the opposite of up is down.
Turning the page nice and slow.
Mat Man stands.
Say, "Stands."
Mat Man, what, sits?
Good job.
Oh, he says, "Whisper."
Have you ever heard someone say, "Shh, whisper?"
You say, "Shout."
Can you whisper?
Good, now can you shout?
Wow.
He says, "In."
Look, he's inside of the little play structure.
And you say, what do you think, "Out?"
That's right.
Good job.
He says, "Wet?"
Look, he's washing the car.
And you say what?
"Dry," yes.
Look at all these kids helping dry the car.
Oh, have you ever helped wash a car?
The parents' wet it and you dry it.
Wow, I hear some friends out there doing opposites.
Good job.
He says, "Laugh."
(Ms Southern laughs) And you say, "Cry."
(Ms Southern cries) Mat Man stands.
What's the opposite of stand?
Sit, that that's right.
Say, "The opposite of stand is sit."
Good job.
He says, "Push."
And you say, "Pull."
He says, "Empty."
And you say, "Full."
You know, I think I heard a little rhyme in there.
Did you hear that rhyme?
Push, pull, empty, full.
Pull, full.
They both say oh, wow.
He says, "Old."
And you say, "New."
He says, "Many."
And you say, "Few."
So many means a lot.
Look at all the little chicks down there.
Aw, how cute.
And a few means just a little.
Those are some great words.
Mat Man stands, and there you go again.
You say, "Sit."
He says, "Real."
And you say, "Pretend."
He says, "Start."
Look at him.
He's in the morning.
He's yawning.
And you say, "End."
Opposites are everywhere.
See if you can find a pair.
So opposites are everywhere and we're gonna work with Mat Man.
He's my favorite.
So what we're gonna do is we're gonna head over to the table and work on a little activity using Mat Man and the book we just did, so come on over.
This is a simple, simple tool that I have.
So all you're gonna need is some paper, any type of paper.
It could be white paper or paper with line on it, or my favorite, scratch paper, and construction paper.
I have already made the pieces here and I'm gonna show you.
But most important is you need some type of coloring tool and some type of paper.
So, we're gonna draw ourselves.
Let's think about it.
Say, "Hmm."
Hmm, if you don't know all the parts you need to draw on yourself, we're gonna use Mat Man as an example.
So I'm gonna pour the pieces out here.
Wow, look at all these cool pieces.
And I have a little song.
Can you sing it with me?
I need your help.
All right.
Oh, look, the letter C. We practiced that earlier in the week.
Ready?
Mat Man has one head, one head, one head, Mat Man has one head so that he could think.
Everybody say, "Think."
All right, what else does Mat Man have?
Let's think about it.
Hmm, a person has, what?
What are these called?
That's right.
Good job, ears.
Mat Man has two ears, two ears, two ears.
Mat Man has two ears so that he could hear.
That's right.
Let's do our body.
Mat Man has one body, one body, one body.
Mat Man has one body so that he can dance.
What's on your body.
What are these called?
I'll give you a little hint, arms.
Mat Man has two arms, two arms, two arms.
Mat Man has two arms so that he could, oh yes, somebody so said give a hug, or catch a ball.
Good job.
You guys are awesome at this already.
Mm, I'm impressed.
What about these?
What do you think these could be?
That's right.
Somebody said legs.
Now am I gonna put the legs here?
That's not where legs go.
Am I gonna put them coming out of the ear?
No, I'm gonna put them coming outta the body.
Mat Man has two legs, two legs, two legs.
Mat Man has two legs so that he could run.
Somebody said run, or kick.
Yeah, somebody said kick, or stretch.
Good job.
And you know, sometimes people are in a wheelchair.
They can do a little dance with their body or use their legs to pat, make a little beat with their legs.
Awesome.
Mat Man has two hands, two hands, two hands.
Mat Man has two hands so that he could give a high five.
Good job.
Give me a air five.
Good job.
Or what else can you do with your hands?
That's right, you can play baseball, play basketball.
Good job.
All right, what is missing?
Hmm, we have a few things missing on here.
Someone did say it.
They said feet.
Mat Man has two feet, two feet, two feet.
Mat Man has two feet so that he could, yes, kick a soccer ball.
Put on his shoes.
Good job.
Okay, I'm done.
No, I'm not done.
I have some things that are missing.
What's missing on our Mat Man here?
Think about it.
Remember, Mat Man, I'll show you a picture of him because I wanna make sure that we're not missing anything.
Let's look at the Mat Man on the picture, and let's look at the Mat Man on the table.
What do you think is missing?
Say, "Hmm."
Yes, good job.
Somebody said the eyes.
Now, his eyes are round but this is what I had laying around the house, so I'm just gonna use these little triangles.
Mat Man has two eyes, two eyes, two eyes.
Mat Man has two eyes so he could read, or watch PBS.
Good job.
You guys are amazing.
Okay, what else is missing?
Nose.
Mat Man has one nose, one nose, one nose.
Mat Man has one nose so that he could, that's right, smell cookies being baked.
Raise your hand if you like cookies.
I love cookies.
Mat Man has one mouth, one mouth, one mouth.
Mat Man has one mouth so that he could eat.
What else?
Brush your teeth.
What else, eat candy.
Munch on vegetables.
Good job.
You guys are so creative.
So this is our Mat Man, but we're missing something.
I wanted to add something fun, and this is a great thing about being creative and using your thinking cap, because you could make anything.
I'm gonna add hair to my Mat Man.
His hair is long.
He might just have a few pieces, but that's okay.
Everybody's different.
Everybody's unique.
So sing it with me.
Mat Man has hair, hair, hair.
Mat Man has hair so that he could comb it.
Wow, look at our creation.
This is our Mat Man.
Okay, so what we're gonna do is we're gonna stand up, head back over to the couch, and do a little bit of moving around as a wiggle break, and when we come back, we're gonna draw ourselves.
All right?
Let's go.
Join me over here at the couch.
So I want you to stand up, and I want you to get ready.
We're gonna sing that Mat Man song, but we're gonna use ourselves.
Are you guys ready?
All right.
I have hair, hair, hair.
I have hair so it can look pretty.
All right, you may not have the same hair as me, but that's okay.
Everybody's unique and different.
Okay, what do I have now?
That's right, a head.
Ready?
I have one head, one head, one head.
I have one head so that I could think.
Good job.
I'm thinking about all the letters that I learned and I'm gonna use those in school, 'cause I'm smart, remember?
You're brave and you're smart.
All right, what are of these?
Arms, let's move 'em around.
We gotta keep it moving.
Ready?
We have two arms, two arms, two arms.
We have two arms so that we can give a hug.
Arm out, arm out, air hug.
All right, what about body?
Yes, we have one body, one body, one body.
We have one body so that we can dance.
Okay, do a dance with me.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
Good job, you guys are doing great at this.
Okay, what about our legs?
We have legs, legs, legs.
We have legs so that we could kick a ball.
So you can keep doing this song with anything, your feet, your eyes, your nose, your ears, whatever you wanna do.
Okay, now that we had one wiggle mcsquiggle, let's head back over to our station so we can draw ourselves.
Ready?
Let's go.
So at our table, I'm gonna just move our Mat Man over, or you can keep your Mat Man.
That way you can remember everything that you need to draw about yourself is so important.
Now, when I draw, I'm going to take a look.
So I have some awesome colors here.
And again, you can find these colors at the store where everything costs a dollar, and I wanna draw myself.
The first thing that I need to do is to draw my skin.
So, hmm, am I gonna pick blue to draw my skin?
Let's see.
No.
Let's see.
I got it, green.
It's perfect.
No, what color should I use to draw my skin?
That's right.
If you said brown, you're correct.
Now your skin might be a different shade of brown and that's okay.
It's okay to look different.
So the first thing I'm gonna draw is my head.
So I'm gonna hold this up here.
Do this.
I'm gonna draw a circle, right, to draw my head.
So that is my head.
I'm drawing my circle.
That is my head, and then I need to draw my clothes.
What color is my shirt?
Yes, you're right, black.
So I'm gonna draw my shirt.
Now, some of us are not artists and that's okay.
As long as you try hard, that's what matters.
Because remember we all have a brain and we all are gonna try hard and think.
Didn't we put on our thinking caps earlier?
If you forgot to put on your thinking cap, go ahead and put it on really quick.
Don't worry.
It's okay.
We're not gonna judge you.
So there's my shirt.
How's it look?
Looks good?
Mm-hmm.
All right, next.
You don't see my jeans, but I have on blue jeans, so I'm gonna just use this blue marker to draw blue jeans.
So, (Ms. Southern squeaks) Good job.
Now I color it in.
Say, "Go, go, go, go, go, go, go."
That is okay.
I think I'm doing pretty good.
I think I'm done.
Just kidding.
I am not finished.
I still have things to do.
What is missing when I'm drawing myself?
Yes, you're right, arms.
I'm getting my brown again and I'm gonna draw arms.
Now, my sister, Candace, is a good artist.
She knows how to draw, so she's taught me a lot about drawing.
So I'm gonna draw my hands.
I may not do my best hands, but you just try your best.
If you're drawing yourself right now, don't feel like you have to be super perfect, right?
All right, now what's next?
Long, beautiful hair.
All right, I have braids in my hair.
So I'm gonna just draw some squigglies going down.
I absolutely love my hair, and my sister, my other sister, Keisha does such a good job with hair.
She actually helped me with my hair, and she does my niece and nephew's hair, Ruben and Sophia.
They did so good.
Look at that.
Oh, how does it look?
Fabulous.
Say, "Fabulous."
All right, now we're gonna do two eyes, boop, boop, and a nose, and a mouth.
I'm gonna do a big smiley face 'cause I'm so happy I get to do arts and crafts with you.
You can draw details if you want.
I know a lot of the girls like to do the eyelashes, and then lastly, I need to draw what?
Some feet.
Yes, good job.
You guys are so amazing.
I have black shoes on, so I'm gonna just draw some circles down here.
Look at this, amazing.
Say, "Amazing."
All right, now you can draw you any type of way.
You can do details, add details, and this is such a fun activity when you're adding details.
So by details, I mean like on your shoes you need some shoe laces, right?
So, there's some little shoe laces, and you can add a sun, right?
Sun in the sky at the top.
And this is so easy, you can do a little sun, like boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, and the sun have a little smiley face.
Oh, mister sun, sun.
All right.
And you can add, you can draw your mom.
You can draw your dad.
You can draw your sister, your brother, your auntie, your aunt, your grandma and grandpa, whoever helps you around the house.
This is who you can draw, and then you can hang it on your wall.
I love to draw.
So let's see.
Am I missing anything?
I drew my hair, perfect, check.
Let's check.
Say, "Good job, check."
Eyes, check.
Nose, check.
Mouth, check.
Black shirt, double check.
Arms, oh yeah.
Blue jeans and some shoes, and I drew a little sun for details.
How do you guys think I did?
Thumbs up?
All right, so what I'm gonna do is write my name.
The first thing we do is always the same.
We pick up a pencil or marker, and we write our name.
So my name is Ms Southern, and so I'm gonna write Ms Southern right here.
So, I'm gonna do a M. Say, "M." That's our letter of the day, starting my letter at the top.
Ms, little bit hard, 'cause it's upside down, and I'm gonna just put S, Ms S right there.
I did that.
I drew it, and I drew me, and I'm gonna give this to my mom to hang on the refrigerator.
She's gonna be so proud of me, and I'm so proud of you.
You guys, you can keep drawing.
We're almost out of time, but guess what?
You can keep drawing, and do details, and make a bunch of pictures for your family, your friends.
And you can even use that as a gift.
So, before we go, it's always important to do our affirmation.
You can do this anytime.
You don't just have to wait for me.
You can even look in the mirror and do it.
So repeat it after me.
Say, "I'm brave.
I'm smart.
No one could tell me different.
When you look at me, you see the future."
Well, friends, I'm so proud of you, and until next time, don't forget that you are so important.
You are so smart, and you can do all things.
Now, join me tomorrow, and we're gonna continue to do some fun, fun activities.
We love you here.
Bye.
Thank you so much for everything.
Keep drawing.
Keep writing.
You're amazing.
Bye.
(cheerful music)
