Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(orchestral music) - Hello little learners.
How are you doing today?
Welcome back to our Pre-K and TK Classroom.
We have another exciting day of learning.
My name is Ms. Laura.
Hello, I'm so excited to be here with you today.
Now, speaking of being here with you, I'd love to hear your name.
So when I put my hand to my ear, tell me your name as loud as you can.
Are you ready?
Oh, hello.
I hope you're having an amazing day because we have so much learning to do.
We are going to learn some new words.
We're going to do some rhyming.
And at the very end in our project place, we're gonna make musical instruments using recycled materials.
I didn't even mention my favorite part which is, we're gonna read one of my favorite stories.
It has a dragon in it.
It involves a paper bag and a prince who is rather rude.
So I hope that you stick around for all of those fun activities.
Now, this week, we're learning all about Earth Day and how we can protect the planet.
Now, earth day already happened on April 22nd, but really, the message I wanna send is that earth day is every day.
We should love our environment every day of the week.
So I have a song to kind of share with you about the environment.
Do you remember this song has hand movements?
Okay.
It goes like this.
I love the earth and everything that lives.
I love the plants and the beauty each one gives.
I love the animals and the fishes in the sea, for I am a part of the earth and the earth is part of me.
And that's so true.
Now, I love to share with you some Spanish songs as well.
Yesterday, we learned that the word for earth in Spanish is tierra.
Today we're gonna learn that the word for recycling is reciclano.
That's right, reciclano.
Remember recycling means you take trash and you turn it into something new.
So here's our song.
You ready?
(Laura sings in Spanish language) Hoo!
We're gonna learn some more of what those words mean tomorrow.
But right now, I have some other words to introduce you to behind the store.
So let's check them out.
Da, da, da, da.
Here are the words that we're going to need to know and understand in order to read our story and know what the story means.
So the first word is expensive.
Have you heard that word before?
Expensive.
Maybe your family said, "That's too expensive.
I cannot buy it for you."
Did you know that expensive means that it costs a lot of money?
That's right.
Something expensive means it costs way too much money.
It's fancy.
The second word, special letter F, is fiery.
Fiery.
Do you hear the word fire in there?
Can you guess what it means?
That's right.
It means very hot and burning.
So if someone has or something has fiery breath, it's very hot.
Now, can you think of a character that might have fiery breath?
Hmm.
All right.
Number three, fiercest.
Special letter F, fiercest.
The most wild and dangerous, fiercest.
And last word is a word that you should not call somebody, but it is in this story.
It's a bum.
Special letter B for bum.
And it's a name you call someone when you want to hurt their feelings.
So at the end of the story, someone calls someone else a bum.
We'll have to cover our ears for that part.
Are you ready to read our story?
Okay, here it is.
Inside my box.
I can get it out.
It is The Paper Bag Princess.
And it's a story by Robert Munsch.
Now, he does a lot of stories.
This one's one of his classics.
Now you can see on the front cover, there is a dragon, and I can tell by the dragon's eyes that he or she looks exhausted.
And there's a little girl here.
She's dressed kind of unusually.
That means she looks very, very different.
I wonder what's gonna happen.
And if you've read this story before, don't give it away.
It's one of my favorites.
The Paper Bag Princess.
And this is dedicated, that means it's meant for someone.
To Elizabeth.
It says here, Elizabeth was a beautiful princess.
She lived in a castle and had expensive princess clothes.
Now, remember we learned that word expensive.
That means it costs a lot of money.
And look, I can tell from the picture, she's wearing a beautiful dress, long, and it looks very fancy.
She was going to marry a prince named Ronald.
There he is with this back turned to a Elizabeth.
He does not seem very friendly.
She's in love though.
Look at all the hearts around her.
Unfortunately, a dragon smashed her castle.
Burnt all her clothes with his fiery breath and carried off Princess Ronald.
There she is with no clothes.
And the dragon has Ronald by the pants.
Ronald, come back.
There he is.
Look.
He's still holding his tennis racket.
Ronald, use that racket, fight off the dragon.
Elizabeth decided to chase the dragon and get Ronald back.
She looked everywhere for something to wear, but the only thing she could find that was not burnt was a paper bag.
So she put on the paper bag and followed the dragon.
Now, I want you to think, at the beginning of the story, Princess Elizabeth wore very expensive princess clothes.
And now all she has is a paper bag.
I wonder how she's feeling.
The dragon was easy to follow because he left a trail of burnt forests and horses bones in his trail.
Look, there's the trail.
And there's a horse bone.
Poor horses.
Finally, Elizabeth came to a cave with a large door that had a huge knocker in it.
She took hold of the knocker and banged on the door.
Bang, bang, bang!
The dragon stuck his nose out of the door and said, "Well, a princess.
I love to eat princesses."
Oh no, Elizabeth run.
But said the dragon, "I have already eaten a whole castle today.
I am all very busy dragon, come back tomorrow."
And he slammed the door so fast that Elizabeth almost got her nose cut.
Now, if you saw a big dragon open up a door, do you think you would stay or would you run?
Elizabeth is very brave.
Elizabeth grabbed the knocker and she banged on the door again.
Bang, bang, bang!
The dragon stuck his nose out of the door and said, "Go away.
I love to eat princesses, but I've already eaten a whole castle.
I can't eat you today.
Come back tomorrow."
"Wait," shouted Elizabeth.
"Is it true that you're the smartest and fiercest dragon in the whole world?"
Remember, fiercest means the most wild and dangerous.
"Well, yes," said the dragon looking very proud.
"Is it true," said Elizabeth.
"That you can burn up 10 forests with your fiery breath?"
"Oh, yes," said the dragon.
And he took a huge deep breath and breathed out so much fire that he burned up 50 forests.
Look at there he is breathing that huge fire.
Well, that's not very good for the environment.
"Fantastic," said Elizabeth.
And the dragon took another huge breath and breathed out so much fire that he burnt up 100 forests.
"Magnificent," said Elizabeth.
And the dragon took another huge breath.
But this time, nothing came out.
The dragon didn't even have enough fire left to cook a meatball.
Boo-hooee!
Hmm.
I wonder if that was part of Elizabeth's plan.
Elizabeth said, "Dragon, is it true that you can fly around the world in just 10 seconds?"
"Well, yes," said the dragon.
And he jumped up and flew all the way around the world in just 10 seconds.
He was very tired when he got back.
But Elizabeth shouted, "Fantastic, do it again."
There is Elizabeth.
And there she is waving.
So the dragon jumped up and flew around the whole world in just 20 seconds.
When he got back, he was too tired to talk, and he laid down and went straight to sleep.
So now Elizabeth with her smart thinking, has made the dragon breathe out all of his fire, and now he's super tired and falling asleep.
Elizabeth whispered very softly, "Hey dragon."
But the drag didn't move at all.
She lifted up the dragon's ears and put her head right inside.
She shouted as loud as she could, "Hey, dragon!"
The dragon was so tired.
He didn't even move.
So what do you think Elizabeth is going to do next?
Now the dragon is asleep.
There's the door and there's Prince Ronald.
If you think that she should walk away, I see, give me a thumbs up.
If you think that she should go inside, give me a clap.
Ooh, I heard a lot of clapping.
Let's see.
Elizabeth walked right over the dragon and opened the door to the cave.
There was prince Ronald.
He looked at her and said, "Elizabeth, you are a mess.
You smell like ashes.
Your hair's all tangled.
And you are wearing a dirty old paper bag.
Come back when you're dressed like a real princess."
So wait a minute.
Elizabeth went through all that trouble to save Prince Ronald, and that's what she gets in return?
Oh, that's not right.
Let's see what she says.
"Ronald," said Elizabeth.
"Your clothes are really pretty and your hair is very neat.
You look like a real prince, but you are..." Cover your ears, here comes that part.
"... A bum."
They didn't get married after all.
But something tells me that Elizabeth is doing just fine without Ronald.
The end.
So I hope that you enjoyed the story of The Paper Bag Princess as much as I do.
Like I said, it's one of my favorites.
I like a good girl hero.
Now, another thing that I love is to teach you some of the skills you need so that you can read books on your own.
And one of those skills is learning to identify rhyming words just by the sounds that you hear.
So I have some rhyming words here and they all rhyme with bag.
Bag, like paper bag.
But a few sneaky words got on my paper and they do not rhyme with bag.
So we gotta take them off and throw them away.
Recycle them.
Okay, I'll recycle.
All right, here's our first one.
We're rhyming with bag.
Remember, rhyming words sound the same at the end.
So let's hear our first word.
Flag.
Bag, flag.
They do rhyme.
Bag, flag.
They both say, "ag."
Okay, can stay.
How about bag, crown?
Do they sound the same?
Bag, crown.
No.
It's one of the words that snuck on there.
Crown, you're nice, to the recycling bin.
Right, next one.
Bag, rag.
Do they sound the same?
Bag, rag?
They both say, "ag."
They do.
They're rhyming words.
How about wag.
Look at that dog's tail.
Wag, bag.
Wag, bag.
They both say, "ag."
Yes.
All right, how about heart?
Now, Elizabeth showed lots of hearts at the beginning for Ronald, but is heart a word that rhymes with bag?
Let's see.
Heart, bag.
Heart, bag?
No, they don't sound the same.
To the recycling bin.
All right, let's do one last one.
How about, or two, tag?
Tag.
Tag, bag.
Do they sound the same?
Tag, bag.
They both say, "ag."
That's right.
You're getting so good at rhyming.
Whoa!
You should be proud of yourself.
Last one is a towel.
Towel.
Towel and bag.
Do they rhyme?
Towel, bag?
No.
Another one of those sneaky words that got on my paper.
To the recycling bin.
So let's review the words that are ones that rhyme with bag.
So bag, flag, rag, wag, and tag.
Do you hear how they sound the same at the end?
Now, for your homework, I want you to continue to practice your rhyming words.
Can you find another word that rhymes with bag that I didn't put on my board here?
All right.
Now it's time to go over to our project place.
Remember I said we're using recycled materials all this week to create new things.
And today we're gonna make some musical instruments.
So let's walk over there and create them together.
Now, here is where you have to get creative and think, how might I make musical instruments using the things that I might ordinarily throw away?
I'm gonna give you some ideas, but I want you to use your imagination.
Look around your house and see how you can make music with the things around you.
Now, some of the first things we're gonna make are these things.
Maracas.
See?
And here are the materials you're gonna need.
All right, so you're gonna need some plastic, silverware spoons work the best, but I only had a spoon and a fork.
And remember, we're not going out to the store to buy new things, we're using what we have.
So I'm gonna use this and then I'm gonna use of these plastic eggs.
You might have some leftover if you celebrate a holiday called Easter.
They sell them sometimes at stores for a lot of... Like 25 cents.
So you have to go through and see if you can have extra of these.
And then we're going to need some tape.
Now, I use masking tape because you can go through and you can paint your maracas if you use this kind of tape.
If you use any other kind of tape, you will not be able to paint your maracas.
Okay, so let's make them.
First thing you're gonna need is something to put inside.
Now, I had these old beads laying around.
So I'm gonna put those inside.
They're going to be what makes the sound to make our music.
So see, I put the beads inside, and then closed it up.
Next thing, we're going to need to tape it.
So I'm gonna take a piece of tape and wrap it around.
Now, why am I taping it?
Because it can open up and spill everywhere.
That would not be fun.
The next thing I'm gonna do is take one of my silverware pieces, this spoon, and I'm going to put it right against my egg and wrap that around.
I found that wrapping it one at a time actually works best.
So I'm gonna do that, wrap it around, just like that.
So it holds it up.
Here you go.
It might take you a few tries, but it'll get there.
All right.
- And with another piece of tape.
And wrap that around, just like that.
Now, you can stop here as long as it's secure because it'll make some noise.
But if you want to paint it like I did, you're gonna wanna continue wrapping it up and paint.
Look at all that music from things that I might throw away.
What other things might you put inside here that makes different noise?
So that's one instrument, but like I said, we're making many.
Let's make a whole band full.
The next material you're gonna need is this, an aluminum can.
So if your family eats corn and green beans or anything that comes with one of these cans, you're gonna wanna save one.
Then use one of these tools called a can opener, and you're gonna have an adult help you open up the lid like this.
Make sure that there's no sharp edges.
Okay?
And then we're gonna take one balloon.
So maybe you have an extra balloon saved from when it was somebody's birthday if you celebrate, or if you just have one laying around.
You're gonna take your balloon and you're gonna cut it like this.
Can you guess what we're making?
What does it look like?
Can in a balloon?
Hmm.
You're gonna open it up.
Now, one little thing with balloons, of course, have a grown up help you because balloons are choking hazards.
So you don't wanna put the balloon anywhere near your mouth.
No, no, no.
Take the balloon, open it up, and put it around the can like this.
And it should stay.
(can rattles) Oh, it's already making noise.
(can bangs) Do you hear that?
(can bangs) Now, this balloon's really cool because it can make a couple of ways.
If you have a pencil, you can bang it.
(can bangs) You hear that?
And you can also use the sides to make some percussions.
(can zips and bangs) You can have a whole band going.
(can bangs and zips) And if you use different things like a pen... Like if you use a pencil, but you can use maybe one spoon from the kitchen, that'll make a completely different noise.
So we have our maracas, we have our drum.
Let's see if we have time to make one more instrument, like a little guitar.
Look at that.
For this one, it's really hard to hear.
You're gonna need a tuna can or something similar.
You can even use a lid from jam and you're gonna wanna do the same thing.
Ooh, still smells like tuna, not a good smelling instrument.
Use the can opener, have an adult use it.
And I'm gonna wanna cut all the way around and making sure there's no sharp edges.
Now, to make it a little more like a guitar shape, you can actually use one of these popsicle sticks.
And I happen to have a really big one.
And you can just tape the popsicle stick to the back like this, or you can glue it down.
You might use some hot glue.
That's again, something you might do with a grownup.
And then you're gonna take your rubber bands, and you can use different size ones, and put them around your can like this.
Okay?
And once you put them all around, you can decorate your stick, and you'll have a musical instrument that looks like a guitar.
And each little string makes a different noise.
(rubber bands vibrate) That neat.
Right, now we have our band.
Look it, we have strings, we have drums, we have maracas, time to make some noise.
(maracas giggles) (drum bangs) (can zips) Let's see.
(rubber bands vibrate) Ooh, that be so much fun.
What other musical instrument might you make?
I hope that you've give this a try and let me know how it goes.
Now, last week or yesterday, we didn't get to finish reading our rubbish and recycling book.
So I wanted to show you some of the pictures in the back.
All right.
Because that's exactly what we're doing.
We're recycling.
Now look, this is the arrow that I was talking to you about.
And I wanted to show you just kind of what it looks like up close.
The arrow represents the three Rs.
And those are three Rs that we're and learn about.
Reduce, and that means make less rubbish and throw less away.
And we make less rubbish here because all of these things would've gone to the trashcan.
Oh no!
Instead they're music to my ears.
Next is reuse.
We're gonna use things more than once.
For example, you could take your own bags to the shops, rather than buy new ones.
That's a great suggestion.
We've reused materials here.
Like who would've thought a spoon and an egg would make maracas?
And the last one is recycle.
Make sure nothing is thrown away that could be recycled.
So let's say that you're all done with your musical drum.
It's a metal.
So don't stick it in the trash.
No, boo to that.
You're gonna put it in the recycling bin.
You're gonna look for something that has this symbol as well to put that in the recycling bin as well.
So I hope you enjoyed making music with me today.
And I hope that you make your own band with things that you have at home.
Let me tell you what we're gonna do tomorrow.
We're gonna read a book about a dr... Oh no, dinosaurs.
Dinosaurs that live in woods.
Dinosaurs and foxes and bears.
And the dinosaur somehow dies.
Oh, I can't wait to read the story with you.
So I hope that you come back tomorrow so that we can read and have fun together.
Until then, a big smooch from me to you.
(Laura smooches) Nice and slobbery.
Goodbye.
(orchestral music)
