Welcome back to our pre-K and TK classroom.
My name is Miss Lara.
I'm gonna be your teacher, and I'm really excited about it today.
Hello!
Now, do you remember, what we're learning about this week?
That's right, feelings.
Now, remember feelings are something that you feel in your body.
If you feel sad, you might feel like your shoulders are hunched over and your face is droopy.
If you're happy, you're smiling and your eyes are bright.
Being able to talk about and identify feelings is important when you're in preschool.
So that's what we're learning about.
Let me add another magnet to my board, and then I'll tell you about our day.
So day three.
One on top, two on the bottom, one and two together make three.
Okay.
So here's what we're going to do today.
I have a book to read about a little girl who tries to build something, and it does not go how she's plans it.
And she gets very angry.
So we're gonna talk about what to do when you get angry, and in our project place, I'm gonna show you how to breathe like a dragon when you're angry.
Ooh, that sounds fun.
So getting your toilet paper roll ready, green paper, and some tissue paper if you wanna follow along.
Let's start our day off though, with our song of the week.
Now I have one in English and one in Spanish all about feelings.
Now, remember, emotions is another word for feelings and that's what our English song says.
So let's get started.
Here we go.
♪ Happy, proud, surprised, and sad ♪ ♪ Anxious, calm, excited, mad ♪ ♪ Upset ♪ ♪ Let's see, confused and glad ♪ ♪ These are some emotions ♪ ♪ Lonely, thankful, safe, and shy ♪ ♪ Nervous, silly, terrified ♪ ♪ Cheerful, fearful, sometimes tearful ♪ ♪ These are some emotions ♪ Can you think of any more?
There's lots of feelings that you feel in your body, right?
And that others feel around you.
Make sure you ask, how are you feeling today?
Ask yourself that, and anybody you see.
You might learn a thing or two.
Now we're going to learn our song in Spanish.
It's called Las Emociones.
Remember we learn that corazon means heart, and casita means house.
And in the song, it's saying that my heart is like a little house and I point to my chest because that's where a real heart is.
Now I'm gonna teach you another word, Alegria, can you say that with me?
A le gri a That's right.
It means happy.
Alegria means happy.
And the next one I'm gonna teach you, enojo means anger, alegria, happy, and enojo, anger.
Okay.
Let's sing song two times.

So let's turn to our door and reveal our words.
So here we go.
We have three.
The first one is magnificent.
Let's clap that out.
Mag (clap) nif (clap) i (clap) cent (clap) Four syllables.
It's special letter M, magnificent.
in is a word that means very beautiful or great.
And in our story, our little girl is going to try to build something magnificent.
The next word is admire.
Let's clap it out.
Ad (clap) mi (clap) re (clap) three syllables, special letter A and it means to look up to someone or to respect someone.
So think about your parents.
Do you ever respect them by following directions?
You're admiring and respecting them, right?
Because they keep you safe and love you.
In our story, that word comes up when a little character is looking up to our main character, the girl.
I'll show you when we get there.
Last word is Pummel.
Let's clap it out.
Pum (clap) mel (clap) two syllables, special letter P. Pummel means to hit over and over.
You're hitting something over and over.
Oh, I hope there's not a lot of hitting in this book.
Well we're gonna find out, cause here it is.
The story is called , The Most Magnificent Thing.
And just by looking at the cover, I see a little girl, and she's holding some plans.
I wonder if she's gonna build something?
And she has a machine or something behind her on a wagon.
Huh?
And there's a dog running around.
What do you think is going to happen in the story by looking at the pictures on the cover?
Maybe.
The story is by Ashley Spires.
So let's open it up.
The Most Magnificent Thing.
This is a regular girl and her best friend in the whole wide world.
They do all kinds of things together.
They race, they eat, they explore, they relax.
So, there's the little girl and her best friend, the dog.
There, they are relaxing.
You can't see, but the dog's paws are up in the air, and it's belly is showing.
She makes things.
He unmakes things.
So then she made a sculpture with straw, and the dog just ran through, and grabbed a straw, and there went the sculpture.
One day the girl has a wonderful idea.
She is gonna make the most magnificent thing.
I wonder what she's going to make?
She knows just how it'll look.
She knows just how it will work.
All she has to do is make it.
And she makes things all the time, easy peasy, lemon squeeze.
First, she hires an assistant.
There's the dog, and he has a bow tie.
The little girl I imagine is saying, "What are your qualifications to be an assistant?"
And the dog (imitates barking) very official.
Next.
They gather their supplies.
They set up somewhere out of the way and get to work.
So there they are setting up.
As people walk by.
I have a feeling these people are going to be important later in the story.
The girl, tinkers, and hammers, and measures, while her assistant pounces, and growls, and chews.
So there she is taking a hammer, and she's making something, a magnificent something.
Remember, magnificent means very beautiful or great.
When she is finished, she steps back to admire her work.
That means looking up to someone or respecting something.
I think she's impressed.
She likes what she's building.
She walks around to the side.
Her assistant examines the other side.
But wait, it doesn't look right.
Her assistant picks it up and gives it a shake.
It doesn't feel right either.
So there's a problem.
She spent all this time planning out, and building, only for it not to come out how she was expecting.
They are shocked to discover that the thing isn't magnificent or good.
It isn't even kind of, sort of, okay.
It's all, all wrong.
The girl tosses it aside, and gives it another go.
So she's gonna try again, now showing perseverance.
That means she's going and going, even when things get tough.
She smooths, and wrenches, and fiddles, her assistant circles, and tugs, and wags.
And when she's finished, she stands up and takes a long look at it.
Hmm.
Her assistant gives it a nudge with his paw.
The thing is still wrong.
She decides to try again, but look at her face.
As she keeps trying and keeps getting it wrong, I think the way she's feeling inside is changing.
See her eyebrows are kind of scrunched, and she's hunched like the grumpy monkey we read about yesterday?
The girl saws, and glues, and adjusts.
She stands, and examines, and stares.
She twists, and tweaks, and fastens.
She fixes, and staples, and studies.
She tries all different ways to make it better.
She makes it square.
She makes it round.
She gives it legs.
She adds antenna.
She makes it fuzzy.
She makes it long, short, rough, smooth, big, small, and even kind of smelly, like stinky cheese.
But none of these things are magnificent.
Oh no.
Her hard work attracts a few admirers.
Remember that word means looking up to someone or respecting someone.
They're looking at the thing and going, "ooh nice", but they don't understand.
They can't see the magnificent thing that she has in her mind.
She gets mad.
Look at her.
She's so angry.
She has a black cloud over her head, and all of the things that she was working on smashed to smithereens.
The angrier she gets, the faster she works.
She smashes pieces into shape.
She jams parts together.
She pummels little bits in.
Her hands feel like they need to get this work done.
But her brain is too full of not right things.
If only the thing would just work!
There she is.
And now her cloud is getting bigger and bigger.
Just like Ruby, when she had her worry.
Do you remember?
Got bigger and bigger.
CRUNCH!
Oh, what happened?
Look, she was putting two things together, and she wasn't taking her time or paying attention, and she smashed her finger.
Look, it's all red!
Have you ever gotten hurt like that?
Where you smash your finger?
Ouch!
The pain starts in her finger, it rushes up to her brain, and she explodes!
AHHHH!
It's not her finest moment.
There she is exploding.
And sometimes your body feels like exploding like that.
Right?
When you get really, really angry, and things aren't going your way?
"I'm no good at this," She said.
"I quit."
Oh no, she's going to quit.
Her assistant though, suggested a walk.
She looks very deflated, like a balloon with all of its air let out.
It's not much help at first, but before long she starts to feel different.
Bit by bit.
The more she gets pushed, the more she gets out of her head, when she's taking a walk.
And as they stroll along, she comes across the first wrong thing she made.
The bad feelings are about to start all over again.
But then she notices something surprising.
Can you look at the picture?
What do you think she's noticing?
It's all the things she was working on that she didn't like before.
Let's read on to find out.
There are some parts of the wrong things, that are really quite right.
The bolts on one, the shape of another, the wheel to seat ratio of the next.
There are all sorts of parts that she likes.
By the time she reaches the end of the trail, she finally knows how to make the thing magnificent.
As she gets to work, she works carefully, and slowly tinkering, hammering, twisting, fiddling, gluing, painting.
Her assistant makes sure that there are no distractions.
That afternoon fades into evening.
Finally, she finishes.
She alerts her assistant.
There she is, all done.
The pair take a good long look.
It leans a little to the left, and it's a bit heavier than expected.
The color could use a bit of work too, but it's just what she wanted.
They climb aboard and take it for a spin.
They are not disappointed.
It really is the most magnificent thing.
The end.
So what did you think of our story?
Our little girl went through quite a lot of feelings, didn't she?
First, she was excited and thoughtful, because she had to plan out her magnificent thing.
And then when she was making it frustrated, anger.
And at the end, she felt better again.
We can feel all those things all in one day.
Now I wanted to talk to you a little bit about a strong feeling, and what to do when you feel it, and that's anger.
Just like our little girl, when she hit her finger, and things weren't going right, she was mad!
And there are some rules to being mad.
That's right.
It's okay to feel any kind of feeling, but there are rules.
So when I'm angry, these are the things that you shouldn't do.
Boo, not good.
The first one is, don't hurt yourself or others.
So sometimes we get really mad, especially like if you want a toy and someone else is playing with it, you're gonna wanna snatch it.
You're gonna wanna grab it.
Nope, Nope, Nope!
Hands to yourself.
The next thing that we don't wanna do when we're angry, is we don't wanna hurt property.
So like I said, even if you're doing an art project, and you just are so frustrated because it's not coming out to be like the most magnificent thing you imagined in your head, and you wanna take all the paints and paper, and shred 'em up.
Stop yourself.
Like we talked about.
Stop, name your feeling, take your breaths, cannot hurt property.
Now there are some things that we should do.
Yay!
All right.
Let's see.
Do talk to others.
It's so important that when you're feeling those strong feelings, that you reach out and you talk to other people about how you're feeling.
And the last one is to breathe and count to 10.
Just like we discussed, take your belly breaths, use your fingers as candles, and blow them out one at a time.
I'm also gonna show you here in the project place, how you can breathe like a dragon.
So let's walk over there, and we'll get started with that project.
So, here's what we're going to make, a little dragon breather.
Look at that.
And then you breathe through it five times.
(hollow raspy breathing) It's like your breathing fire.
(hollow raspy breathing) Hey, so to make this activity you're gonna need a paper towel roll, some green paper, glue, scissors, yellow paper, or red, or anything that you wanna use for the fire.
Now, the only thing is it does have to be tissue paper, not very heavy paper, because then when you blow through it, if it's heavy paper, it won't move.
Okay, Let's get started.
First.
We need to measure out how much paper we're going to need.
So, I do this by placing the paper towel roll on top, and then just making a little snip, kind of where it ends.
So like right here, you can see this is right where I snipped with my scissors.
Okay.
So I'm just gonna cut kind of down and I'm not gonna need this whole roll here.
So after I snip about halfway through, I'm gonna take the roll again, hold it down like this, and roll it over.
And right about where it rolls over, I'm gonna snip right here.
Like there's another snip.
Now I'm gonna cut my rectangle out.
Cause that is the amount of paper that I'm going to need.
So here you go.
Hey, last thing we need to do, to get this dragon covered, is we need to add some glue.
Now, you can add liquid glue or you can add glue stick.
For me, I'm gonna add a glue stick, because I want it to dry really quickly, since I'm limited on time here.
Always let the glue out and I'm gonna add the glue right along here.
There we go.
And then tightly roll it over.
You can even hold it down for a little bit.
Ooh.
My measurements were pretty okay.
I'm impressed.
I admire my work.
All right.
Next what we're going to do, is we're gonna need to add some eyes.
So I thought, Hmm.
Maybe the eyes can stick out?
Look, see in my sample that I actually made some orange eyes, right here.
But since we have green paper today, I think I'm gonna make green eyes so it looks like they're coming out of the body of the dragon.
So I'm just gonna snip some paper off, and then make like a U shape.
And if I fold it in half, I can get two U's at the same time.
I'll show you in just a minute what it looks like.
Look at that, see those little U shapes.
Then you're gonna fold it over on one end, like this.
You can see it has a little flap.
Take your glue, and you can glue down the eyes, like this.
There's one, again, make a little flap, add the glue, there's two.
And then you can just draw a little black pupil, or the inside of the eye, with the marker.
I have these googly eyes here that I'm gonna use.
I don't know what their official name is, I think it actually is googly eyes.
You can get these at the place where everything is dollar.
Now I have found, that the best way to attach these is with some liquid glue.
So that's exactly what I'm going to use.
Ooh, I'm running outta glue.
These just take a little longer to dry, and they might actually slip on down, and that's okay.
Still gonna be a magnificent thing.
I'm not worried.
Next, we'll add the fire.
Oh, look at my dragon, it's super cool!
Now you can use this kind of tissue paper.
Remember I try to use recycled materials.
So if you ever get any presents, where you get this kind of paper, just reuse that.
You could also use the streamer.
Like if you're decorating for a party, sometimes they have leftover streamer, and actually I think that's what I'm going to use today.
Some yellow and red streamer.
So I'm gonna take it.
I'm gonna cut a length about this big.
That may actually be too long.
Let me cut it in half.
There we go.
Or as long as you want it.
So a little too thick, so I'm just gonna cut it in half.
That means into two pieces that are the same, like this.
And then I'm gonna put my dragon so it's snout or nose is facing up and I'm gonna glue my fire on there.
Now there's lots of different ways that you can take deep breaths.
I saw online.
They even have a chocolate chip breathing, you can look up.
You can also do like I said, bubble breathing, dragon breathing.
So it doesn't just have to be using your belly breaths every time you're angry, you can make it fun.
I'm gonna do the same thing with the red.
Cut it down the middle.
Here we go.
And then I'm gonna glue it.
You can even make a whole box of these.
You can call it your little breathing corner make it in a calm space in your room.
So that way, when you get really mad at your brother, sister, parents, teacher, classmates, when you get home, you can go to your breathing corners.
Okay.
It's starting to look like a dragon.
(raspy breaths) But, I think I'm gonna add just a little bit more detail since I have time.
I'm gonna add these little green, or maybe these little purple pompom things that I have.
Just like I did in my sample here, you see kind of looks like a snout or a nose.
I'm just gonna add those with some liquid glue and then I'll show you how to use our dragon.
These may not wanna stay.
Be good to me glue, stick.
I have found that fuzzy things do not like to stick to paper easily, you just kind of have to hold them down.
But look!
It's being good to me.
It knows to listen.
(chuckles) So this is what my Dragon's looking like.
I'll show you how to use it.
So let's say you're really, really angry and just having a bad day.
Go and get your dragon breather.
You're gonna stop.
You're going to name your feeling, and you're going to blow in through, and take five big dragon breaths.
Are you ready?
Count with me.
One.
(raspy breath) It makes a sound.
TWo.
(raspy breath) Three.
(raspy breath) Four.
(raspy breath) Five.
(raspy breath) There you go.
I feel much better.
You can even take this to an adult when they're having a bad day.
Say, "try some dragon breaths.
It helps me."
